A2: Ts feeling as if there are too many mandates on them to be able to beat meet Ss needs for future. Like required standards, assessments etc. my dream school: focused on #portraitofagraduate and #PBLs or Ss choice topics of study. #NoVAedChat
A2 I think it's a shift in the work that's always been done in schools... and that's hard for students, parents, educators, community to understand sometimes. Our challenge is telling the story in a way that allows all to see the reasons we want this for all students #Novaedchat

A2 The content needs to be taught, but now we need to add tech skills, digital collaboration, problem solving skills - things that can be applied across the board. We are moving away from specialization, and this can be tough for Ts who are content focused. #NoVAedchat
Heidi this is awesome. I think we look at content/skills and forget the interpersonal more often. How do we react when others disagree? how do we disagree? What do we do in the face of negative reaction? These are all really so important! #NoVAedchat

A2: I think a challenge we will face is the idea of instant gratification. Kids are used to earning a reward, compliment, or some type of positive reinforcement after doing a task. This doesn’t always happen when you’re an adult. #NoVAedchat
A3 my school is doing the @PosProject this year for the first time. It has truly enabled our students to not be so self centered, to adapt to others around them and learn to work with different peoples strengths #novaedchat
A3: my librarian and i have conducted PBLs where Ss explore areas of interest: reinforcing research skills, reading, writing, and synthesizing information - they have choice and share with others in a variety of innovative ways. Behavior is great and Ss are engaged #NoVAedchat
A3 I try to encourage my Ss to come up with a solution before I give them an answer. It seems like a lot of them expect adults to just give them the answer. And I make sure to reinforce their success - “I knew you could do it!” #NoVAedchat

Yes! It's all about thinking about and noticing that #OtherPeopleMatter. I love how students and teachers begin to notice characteristics, strengths and similarities in others. It's such a shift! #NoVAedchat

A3: our schools really focusing on math workshop this year and in that we’re really pushing Ss to explain the thinking behind their answer. I’ve had huge success getting Ss to think beyond “the answer’s 10” but the reasoning why or how they got to that answer. #novaedchat
A3: I believe that intentionally teaching POG skills and having time for self-reflection will have a positive impact on students. The more they identify their strengths and see themselves as part of a larger community- the better off they will be! #fcpsPOG#NoVAedchat

Teaching first grade I feel like I’ve done more and more of this as time has gone on. Kids aren’t being taught does social and conflicts skills. They can be tough to teach.
A4: @fcpsnews has been super helpful with the #PortraitofaGraduate skills. As a classroom teacher (and aspiring SBTS) the lessons they have created are great to help focus us on how important those #21stcenturyskills really are! #NoVAedchat

A5 While tough, teacher prep programs MUST move faster to modify what they are teaching. Ts need to be better prepared to teach these more abstract skills. #NoVAedchat
A5: I’d LOVE to see some PD’s on meaningful tech use. Some many times teachers think tech is a replacement for them. Tech is a great TOOL when used with intention and purpose. Often times there are still great ways to use low tech lessons too. #NoVAedchat
A5: a shift in the curriculum to be more applicable to today's skillset. Specifically in mathematics at the high school level. Prepping kids for the next level is a tempting excuse not to try more innovative teaching practices. #NoVAedChat
A5: I appreciate that Virginia has written excellent verbs in our SOLs for Ts to teach higher on the blooms scale. However, we need more TIME to plan for Ss to DO something with it! Greatly crafted lessons take time to plan and create! #NoVAedchat
A5: Districts and states need to fund 1:1 initiatives K-12. Our students live in a digital world and they need to be taught how to do that successfully and respectfully #novaedchat

The staff gets to pick what they want to learn for their pd group for the year. @HerndonHS we focused on the engagement indicators to have a focus. @TechyMargaret has several years of experience in this and has a lot of great resources for this.

This year the CHS staff chose their topics from a list of broad topics (from survey data they completed in June) or identified their own individual or group learning goal connected to POG, the LM or school goals. There are more personal/group goals than broad topic! #Novaedchat
A6: To help my students be prepared to succeed in their future, I will continue to learn and grow as a teacher. I will meet them where they are. #NoVAedchat
