Hey Megan, & 5th grade math teacher from checking in
Hi Megan. Great to see you again.
A1: This is first year participating in
My 5th grade Ss enjoyed last year. We didn’t have as much motivation, but those who participated enjoyed it.
our Ss go through phases -- now the math is hard so it is harder to keep them going
I really see a need for supporting the teachers! The teachers’ attitude towards plays a big part
It has been an incredible experience for students. As a staff it has created more community than I imagined!
I agree -- that was the surprising part -- also I'm now personally addicted to
They all understand what a math marathon is now! Our moticvation goes in waves
last year I didn't see how important it was that it was a LONG challenge;grit can't happen unless its hard
So true! Ts buy in when they can really understand the benefits https://t.co/Jpu2Z9epfI

A3: Definitely helps Ss practice the lifeskills needed for long-term projects & outcomes.
True Life: How became my students' and my best friend
A3: Long-term projects help Ss break down tasks, chunk tasks, & builds perseverance.
True enough! I've learned more about learning than I have about MATH and I've learned a TON of math
The leaderboards have been something that our community has looked forward to ever week! It's its own prize!
A4 I think it is good to admit out loud that things are tough but then encourage
A4: Highlight growth. Reflection is key. Build in time for Ss to reflect on how they’ve grown no matter how much.
A2 Teaching students is a life skill. How do we deal with setbacks? How do they make us stronger?
And modeling it too -- confessing when things are tough for us! https://t.co/COMIRP7brU

Just got asked if "grit" was culturally sensitive. Never heard anything about that? You?
A3 Long-term projects mirror work that students will do in the workforce, sometimes it is a messy process to get results!
A5 it can be challenging to make time for as the challenge goes on but so rewarding
Communicating with students' families would be our best resource to answer that question
A5: Really need to lean on my colleagues when things get rough for me. As driven as I am, surrounding myself w others helps.
I've just never heard of any controversy over the term
A4 dance parties help keep us motivated in the classroom.
A6 Grit has to be experienced - can't really be taught other than to let Ss fight their way through it
A4 cont: When I feel the dip in motivation with Ss, I post inspirational quotes and images on Classroom
A5 I make goals and show Ss that I am working on long term projects. They always ask me questions and keep me honest!
I've got a pile of those!
Being transparent with our students w our own projects is always a good thing.
Engaging parents in this practice with Ss at home helps make this connection real for Ss
It’s be great to see more on future
Thanks for taking the time to join us -- tell a friend and join us next time!
A6 Running my first marathon taught me that grit needed to be experienced! I need to make more opportunites for Ss after
That’s awesome! When was your first marathon? I’ve done 13 halves, haven’t done a full yet.
