We use a basic Question and Answer process Q1, Q2, A1, A2 to discuss issues on #Resiliencechat So, are you ready? Are you here? Can you hear me now, I mean #Tweet me now? HA!
#Resiliencechat Tidbit: #StudentVoice The concept of student voice is not something that is often spoken about, yet, our educational systems are supposed to be designed to help students. Maybe there is a needed #transformation to truly learn about what our students really need!
While there is a thought out process to the questions, please feel free to respond to any of them in any order, and with that, the tidbit has been delivered, and it is time for Q1 #Resiliencechat Please let us know who you are, and where you hail from?
Absolutely! #Resiliencechat What a powerful example to bring up! Their experiences ignited them to truly make a lasting impact, and I surely wish that we continue to listen to them!
A1 #resiliencechat When I now think of #studentvoice I truly am wondering, if we have been listening to them, and/or have we been hearing what they are saying, and truly seeking to understand. I think we are in need of some #transformative practices on our end to ensure we hear!
Q2. #Resiliencechat
Are educators more willing now to seek out #studentvoice student perceptions, thoughts, interests, attitudes, and desires than in the past? How ever long past means to you! Or, are we listening for what we want to hear?
A2 I think that educators are much more inclined to listen than they were back in the day. Furthermore, seems to me that educators are much more encouraging of #studentvoice than they were in the past. #resiliencechat
A2: fair to say we all are quilty of listening long for mirror thoughts, those that are similar and support ours. But I do believe there is an enhanced democracy in most classroom decisions today #Resiliencechat
#Resiliencechat I went on a quick google search for research papers on the subject, and to my dismay, there doesn't appear to be much depth to the issue. I concur, I think there is a looming change, yet, I wonder if a broad stream of #educators are really listening to understand?
A1 - Ss voice is something to create your curricula, culture and very classhome. It’s a still, small voice that may have trauma, may need to be challenged academically, may need to be noticed, may need to be out of one’s seat, shoot, may just need a snack! #Resiliencechat
A2 Kid Q is having a wonderful experience in high school because her teachers all seem to encourage creativity and independent thinking. I am really impressed by staff there. #resiliencechat

#Resiliencechat A2 - Let’s let student voice be a learning process. Let’s not start over, but let’s give our youth a great star ⭐️ ting point. So that we move forward...adelante!
Absolutely, snacks are important! #Resiliencechat I love the many opportunities you list that are strategies for students to use their voice to be involved in their personal learning journey.

I see a shift in this direction. It’s hard to ignore when #sel makes a case for itself. Knowing students at their core, meeting their hierarchy, seeing their passion is key. I like to say , “Get a PhD in your kids!” This will help you meet their need. #Resiliencechat
I'm inspired by this. #Resiliencechat Do you think that it is purposeful on behalf of more teachers, spotty in practice, or isolated to are few people? Just wondering.

#resiliencechat@ResiliencyGuy When I participated in the rally and march for #MARCHFOROURLIVES I was so impressed by the young adults who organized this. Perhaps some helped, but this was all them.
I think people listen to hear but this is often the case for people they feel have enhanced understanding on a topic. We are most likely to listen deep to experts. Unfortunately the most creative ideas are nit exclusive to that dynamic #Resiliencechat
Q3 #Resiliencechat
What strategies have you engaged in, and would you recommend to seek out #StudentVoices? Has this occurred in a 1:1, small group, classroom, or larger audience?
#resiliencechat
Furthermore @ResiliencyGuy our Kid Q who is really very introverted, wants to speak out about injustice. She wants to be heard. And we need to be open to what all of these students feel inclined to say. Guide them, yes, but also be open to freedom of expression. #resiliencechat
This is a #brilliant statement, and I more than likely will steal it, and quote you for it! "Get a PhD in your kids!" YES, YES, YES! If this is the first order of business, then so many other things fall into place! #Resiliencechat

A3: I keep asking questions all day long. Get their thoughts on the subject. Their opinions. Their perception. Openly discuss not debate topic. Make sure each voice is heard. All sides. #Resiliencechat
A3 Invitation. Not insisting. But finally pleasantly surprised when Kid Q wanted to join me for #FamiliesBelongTogether back in the summer. #resiliencechat
When it it time for a summative assessment, why not work with the group to pick a day that will reduce stress. Providing safety for introverts by allowing them to work in different dynamics rather than compelling group work, #Resiliencechat
I concur! We have a student board member as part of our District's governance team, and she has #inspired a perspective switch in which many adults I know are truly seeking to understand the broader needs of students, with specificity. #Resiliencechat

Hey there Bill! We are chatting about the importance of #studentvoice We want to hear from you, and about your students, and how they share their voices with the world. #Resiliencechat
A3 (part 1) Strategies:
First month of school is little content and LOT learning how kids are smart (think mult intelligences), build routines, help them feel confident and my big push is #justgotothegame go get into their lives and love em’ like crazy. #Resiliencechat
A1 I think of democratic classrooms, or students making actual schoolwide decisions (through student-faculty-parent committees, for example). I also think not everyone genuinely wants to listen to student voice, including some who claim to. Adultism is a thing.

#Resiliencechat Epiphany time! A climate committee made of a variety of students from your school to meet with admin or making students a mandatory part of your management team is essential. Student voice has to be fostered and grown over time.
A3 (part 2)@SanfordHarmony, creating a safe space where kids feel willing to risk, trust and empathize.
Programs like #CGI and @thedailycafe structures that allow for 1 on 1 time and encourage them to explain their learning.
Teaching them they HAVE a voice
#Resiliencechat
#empowerment is key! We also need to ensure that if we set up systems to listen, that we actually do, or we could diminish the benefits of the growth we are seeking to develop. #Resiliencechat

#Resiliencechat Yes, individual teachers can build opportunities for #studentvoice to be heard, and admin can also create opportunities for #studentvoice to build and change school culture. Also, build communication opportunities for students to speak to teachers! #Communicate!

Q5 #Resiliencechat#StudentVoice if captured with authenticity, thoughtfully understood, could allow us to consider the next transformative approach that would be more relevant, engaging, than simply tracking survey data. How could real data change our practices and processes?
#Resiliencechat I agree. It's about building safe places, with varied avenues to listen, and then let them know that we are really interested in what they think, say, want, and where they want to be.
A5: for growth every student gets the opportunity to give feedback to their teachers each term. They consistently show maturity and insight with the feedback they provide. They also are happy when there is evidence of practice shift by staff. #Resiliencechat
Me too! Love when our teachers are so thoughtful about their impacts, and seek opportunities to be reflective, purposeful, and #transformative#Resiliencechat
Being down here in the dungeon is not my idea of a good time. Freezing. So checking out #resiliencechat folks. Hopefully my computer will be fixed in time for next week. Thanks @ResiliencyGuy for yet another thoughtful chat.
Q6 #Resiliencechat One idea:
If you think you heard a student correctly, please stop, check for understanding, ask for clarification, offer feedback, then ask if that feedback might help the student to actually improve their circumstance.
Q6 Can you commit to try this?
