Christine from the Sunshine Coast. I will be one of your co-moderators tonight on #bcedchat. I'm interested in all that is #bced. Let's talk core competencies and student self-assessment. I hope you can join me and @Teachinginthe21 tonight.
Hi #bcedchat! Carrie from Poco, grade 4/5 teacher. I'll be in and out tonight. Just got back for camping and trying to get my planning for the week sorted!
A1 I believe I understand them pretty well. I have presented to parents and staff about them. As well, I have a teaching load so I need to keep up on them. #bcedchat
A1: As we go deeper with the #corecompetencies I have a greater understanding on how these competencies have always been part of our teaching and how they continue to create social and global competencies in our students. #bcedchat
A1. I am getting there. I love playing with #corecompetencies with my SFU Undergraduate Students / Pre-Service Teachers. Learning by doing. It just gets better over time. #bcedchat
A1: I understand the #corecompetencies pretty well, and have tried to incorporate them through the year. Doing our year end self-evaluations and I feel the students seem to know them well too. But, I know there are lots of things I need to improve on! #bcedchat
A1 In large part due to the sharing that has happened on prior #bcedchat s and also the Richmond conference, I am pretty comfortable with #corecompetencies and have been using them frequently in my classroom. #bcedchat
A1: Good understanding. And we have been doing it just now we need to make it more explicit to Ss? So that they can better reflect their learning. #bcedchat
I enjoyed reading over the year-end self-evaluations, a lot of considerate, thought out responses. They have been shared with parents already and I received a lot of positive feedback from Ps enjoying reading about how their children are self-assessing their learning. #bcedchat
A1: Good understanding. And we have been doing it just now we need to make it more explicit to Ss? So that they can better reflect their learning. #bcedchat
A1: I feel pretty comfortable with it in practice but feel I need to support towards actively recognizing this within their practice and sharing this with students #bcedchat
Yes. And at my schl we actually just recently conducted schl-wide #corecompetencies w/ Grade 8 & 9 Ss. Ss brought artifacts to share w/ us abt their learning of CC. #bcedchat
Hi Kenneth... Welcome back to #bcedchat. I am so glad that many of us are feeling more comfortable with the #corecompetencies. What's next for you on this?
A1: I feel pretty comfortable with it in practice but feel I need to support towards actively recognizing this within their practice and sharing this with students #bcedchat
A2 I think a continuous student self reflection is a next level focus. We had to start with us understanding them first. So the level of student reflections varies, but we have a long way to go. #bcedchat
I typically tried having students self-assess at the end of each term, with one final self-assessment for reporting. Seemed to work well with pacing but also helped students focus on different competencies at different times in the year! #bcedchat

I really like it too! The #corecompetencies interviews went really well. It was nice for us to meet Ss we don't teach and hear their stories too. #bcedchat
A2: When they want to. Ss often come up to me to ask for a photo to be taken and then self-assess using cc language. They have had a whole year of hearing, seeing and using the language associated with cc. #bcedchat
Trying to support my staff in becoming more comfortable and making this recognizable in their practice and purposeful for their students to be able to notice, name and nurture their growth in different curricular and personal areas #bcedchat

A1: I feel pretty comfortable with it in practice but feel I need to support towards actively recognizing this within their practice and sharing this with students #bcedchat
It is a great way to connect their learning in a more personal way and a reflection to their learning of the curriculum competencies with the #corecompetencies#bcedchat
A2 my kiddos did a self-reflection “fill in the ranking” but didn’t like all the reading - got some better ideas (including some “competency cards” to put with samples of student work in their efolios!) #bcedchat
A2: Students are self-assessing daily, both formally and informally, but not always about their core competencies. In order for self-assessment to be meaningful, they need to have a firm grasp on what exactly they are assessing. #bcedchat#goals
Agreed. Continuous student self-assessment. This would be awesome. Honing the skill becomes second nature. Then we can report out our most notable #corecompetencies at the end of the school year. Ideal. #bcedchat
A2 I think a continuous student self reflection is a next level focus. We had to start with us understanding them first. So the level of student reflections varies, but we have a long way to go. #bcedchat
Yes! That would be wonderful! Right now we are immersed in it as we are ending the year. Some students are having difficulty as they have not practiced this skill all year. #bcedchat
A3: In my school, the assessments of the #corecompetencies is ongoing and consistent. Happens all the time, throughout the lessons and support. Again, all about the reflection of learning and improving their process of learning. #bcedchat
A1. I think that I have a pretty good understanding, of them, but
A2. I still need to work on bringing them into my classroom on a regular basis! #bcedchat
Q3: I feel in my experiences that many some HS teachers are doing it as a one off, unit end reflection- I want to push it to be more active in everyday activities, thinking and learning. I need to help my teachers notice, name and nurture the CC in their assignments #bcedchat
Interesting. In my #EDUC454E100 class, we've been playing with the single point rubric and I CAN statements... hope to get to evidence as to why we self-assess one way or the other. #bcedchat
Interesting. In my #EDUC454E100 class, we've been playing with the single point rubric and I CAN statements... hope to get to evidence as to why we self-assess one way or the other. #bcedchat
Yes! It should be daily reflection of their learning. It happens in every class and we need to name it and create those opportunities to make sure that our students are involved in their own learning. #bcedchat
A3: Ss do term end reflection on #corecompetencies in my class and a schl-wide CC interview with tchrs at end of yr. But of course in class we talk abt CC as well, just not documented #bcedchat
One of my brilliant primary colleagues has “squares” with descriptors of each competency - when it’s a good time to archive some learning, kids can choose which competency(ies) they feel they used!
#bcedchat
A3: I've been experimenting with a variety of self-assessment tools... the biggest goal is for students to learn something from the process and to be proud of that process even if they are not proud of the end result. #bcedchat
I get frustrated with this sometimes, but have to step back because we have to start somewhere and isn’t it awesome that we are actually asking for student reflection for reporting?! #bcedchat

@KennethHeadley I feel like you are getting my thoughts down before I do! I've been trying to support and encourage the staff at my school to do the same thing. Slowly, things are taking shape! #bcedchat
Would love to do this. Mostly, it's observations and walk throughs to support our teachers and students. I haven't documented these, but maybe that is something I should do. #bcedchat
A lot of this sounds like the same discussion we have in my district. Working on self-assessing so that the students begin to just do this naturally. We start at the Kindergarten level. By the time they get to 5th grade, they just reflect/assess nat. #bcedchat#edu5213SBU
Great question- I do document daily reflection in a personal journal that allows me to go back and question my interactions, experiences, and lessons for the day- nonetheless- I do not report on those---We also do growth plans and I embedded mine this year in the CC's #bcedchat
I've also seen teachers grading self-assessments or giving "completion points" for them... which means students might be doing them for points and not really reflecting. #bcedchat
We just piloted this yr so it was more like a one-day event for grade 8/9 Ss to reflect on their learning of #corecompetencies w/ artifacts. Ideally this should be done more often in classrooms. But the whole school staff was involved, and it went really well #bcedchat
A4: We don't have the freedom to modify the report card template or even to put custom comments, so I make sure reflections are shared with families - without my feedback - so that students are sharing their thoughts directly with their families. #bcedchat
In addition to hearing stories of the Ss learning and growth in #corecompetencies, we also hear about all the good work our colleagues are doing, which was great! #bcedchat
I think that many students do not find value in the core competencies as of yet because it is not connected to a mark (At the hs level)- so many teachers get stuck with this process and revert back to assessment this way #bcedchat
I've also seen teachers grading self-assessments or giving "completion points" for them... which means students might be doing them for points and not really reflecting. #bcedchat
A2- Ss are self-assessing their core competencies daily verbally and by using tech. They also do it weekly in writing using a week in review sheet that they complete and which acts as home-school communication and sharing of learning. #bcedchat
Yikes. The power of evaluation... aka. grades/marks. Completion marks are not appropriate for CCs and I agree with you, it may not be authentic (or safe). #bcedchat
I've also seen teachers grading self-assessments or giving "completion points" for them... which means students might be doing them for points and not really reflecting. #bcedchat
A4 I have a checklist of some of the ccs at the end of my report card. I have done this on every report card. I then have evidence in a portfolio. #bcedchat
Q5: How are you helping students identify the core competencies they are self-assessing? How are students identifying their core competencies? #bcedchat
Q5: How are you helping students identify the core competencies they are self-assessing? How are students identifying their core competencies? #bcedchat
A4: All of our elementary teachers post at least the three examples in student eportfolios, but some teachers have many more. Love the variety. #bcedchat
A3: Using @FreshGrade to create a portfolio, Talking about what and how they are learning. Ss like have ccs put up around the room and signing their name when they can show the cc. #bcedchat
I teach 12th grade ELLs and I tell them that self-assessments are a way for them to decide what they want to learn next and to take control of how they'd like to learn it. I need their feedback to personalize instruction. #bcedchat

A4: I have students choosing proof of learning from their @FreshGrade portfolios to show what "I can" statements best describe their learning. It's been amazing to see their reflections and how much they remember from the beginning of the year to show their growth.
#bcedchat
I am hopeful. There is HUGE value in the #corecompetencies at K-7, high school, and higher ED. I would even push the envelope to ourselves, the adults in education. It's a HUGE mindshift that will help all of us value us as learners and the process of learning. #bcedchat

Love this process- its is responsive teaching- I think we need to address this more as educators-- informing our practice daily through these self assessments #bcedchat

A5: There's a difference between learning facts and learning skills. Usually, if you ask, "What's something you want to get better at?" they reply with a skill, and I take it from there. #bcedchat

A4. I don't LOVE it, but I (with input from a team) made a template for students to reflect on the CC's in their classes for 1-2 days, then they'll create a reflection in homeroom. Whole thing will be sent home w/ report cards. #bcedchat
A5: Lots of conversation. Ss also decided to make their own posters. Have a working bulletin board that changes over time. Over the summer I am going to make some social stories which I think would be helpful. #bcedchat
A4: We now attach Ss reflections to report cards (not just for #corecompetencies, for curricular competencies and learning in the course in general) #bcedchat
A5: I think it helps that we talked about them throughout the year. Last week, we brainstormed all the activities and projects we did since sept. Then, we wrote C beside the ones that demonstrated Communication, CT beside the ones for Critical thinking, etc. #bcedchat
Whether we call it core competencies or other there is tremendous value in understanding oneself...strengths an challenges an where they fall in our expressed goals #bcedchat
A5- I try to model my own use of core competencies on a daily basis, we also have core competencies magnets that go up on the day plan that students place on the board. Students also, now, frequently refer to core competencies in our class meetings and discussions. #bcedchat
I am a conversationalist with the #corecompetencies... It helps me make sense of them WITH STUDENTS. Co-constructing a shared understanding with students will help us help others. #bcedchat

The follow-through is the most important. If you ask 34 kids to self-assess, you'll get 34 different responses citing 34 different goals, and if you don't find a way to make it real, they won't see a value in continuing to participate in ungraded self-assessments. #bcedchat

Yes! The #corecompetencies are K-death.
Love the connection to WHO (identity): "Who I am. Who I am becoming"-@sjeroski
How am I growing as a critical & creative thinker and effective communicator who is personally and socially responsible?
#bcedchat
In my classroom- I was stuck with the Core Competencies until I changed my assignments to embed the language of the core competencies. I also had to change my assignments to make them more purposeful and meaningful to my students- #bcedchat

Meaning that the core competencies are worked on/stretched/strengthened throughout our lives ... it is not just for something "done" in school

Thanks! Took a while but it was an amazing discussion and helped students push their reflections further. Their self evaluations that will be going home with report cards gave me goose bumps they were so well thought out!! #bcedchat
Oh I bet... i'm getting goosebumps imagining what students are saying about their learning and the #corecompetencies they developed and valued. #bcedchat

A6: Core competencies help students develop curricular competencies. The problem is that sometimes students are ONLY working on core competencies outside of school. We need to make sure they can develop AND celebrate their successes with core Cs inside school as well. #bcedchat

Exactly- I also used these magnets I got from Langley's @lynietener and utilized them in my learning goals for my lesson on my white board. We were always in discussion of it. #bcedchat
A6: I think the curricular competencies have a lot to do with communicating, thinking critically and creatively, problem solving - knowing who they are as learners and growing - all of that is directly linked to the CCs! #bcedchat

The core competencies definitely compliment the curricular competencies but also competencies found outside of class. Conversely, CC's are developed outside of school and can nicely transfer into curricular comps. #winning#bcedchat

Yes, do it! We had lots of projects, so we did 3 days of working through, one for communication, on for critical and creative thinking, and one for the 3 PS CCs #bcedchat

A6. I think that we are ALL developing our Core competencies outside of school. The challenge is for us to become more aware of them and be able to notice, name and nurture in all aspects of life. #bcedchat
A6- Students are using core competencies the minute they are actively "doing something". Whether is is soccer, dance, video games, etc- it is up to us as educators to help them notice and name and nurture this #bcedchat
A6: You need the core competencies to be successful in the curricular competencies. To be a life-long learner you need to self-assess. The core competencies are a great framework for this.#bcedchat

Agreed :)
I like to see the classrooms like different gyms where students "work out" their core through various discipline-specific exercises (i.e. curricular comp): read more here: https://t.co/jdaOdfPDtx#bcedchat

A7: Definitely conversations during a variety of #edcamps, especially at @EdCampBCCC. Also, online sharing of resources through #bcedchat. North Van has some great ressources en français that I have used as well #bcedchat
A7. As mentioned in a previous answer... how I best make sense of something is to talk about it... experiment... play... get immediate formative feedback... revise... and try again. #experientiallearning#bcedchat

Can someone give me an example of how someone might get better at a core competency that isn’t actually getting better a curricular competency? #bcedchat
Can’t like this enough. When we “embed” the CCs by simply looking at the units we’ve taught for the last 10 years and pointing out where the CCs live in them, I think we are missing the boat. CC growth happens in a more meaningful way when CCs truly drive planning. #bcedchat
Interesting question. Isn’t the core competencies embedded in the curriculum competencies. Without that reflective piece, are the curriculum competencies getting that deeper learning? #bcedchat
I’ve been wrestling with Core C lately because a bunch of my recent reading/research suggests that we can’t develop core outside of disciplines(curricular). Can you give me an example of how a kid might developing core outside of a topic/subject/domain? Trying to figure it out!
I love the idea of experimenting and playing. Sometimes in education playing is not seen as worthwhile. My thought is that playing is what learning is all about. Creativity, problem solving, critical thinking. WOW! #bcedchat#edu5213SBU
I have a student who is a ref for soccer: in that context he worked on and became really good at communication, personal awareness and critical thinking - it took him most of this school year to apply any of those to his curricular competencies. #bcedchat

A8. I would love self-assessment of the #corecompetencies to be a K-12 cultural norm. That is my want and desire. I would love to include #bigthinkingclassrooms. For it to be ongoing and continuous. That would be my goal. Make learning visible and explicit for all. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A8: I would like to embed core comps in all lessons that I do in classrooms. This may help others to see how the core comps could be a part of day to day life in the classroom.
Not competencies AND subjuects, but interconnected & talk about the connections (as I do when I get groans as I connect math to language arts...) acknlowedging all the competencies we do (better) each day - and naming them #bcedchat
Where I get stuck is that everything I've read from cognitive science/pychology/study of expertise, is that critical thinking and reasoning are deeply tied to how we organize and apply background knowledge in a domain. #bcedchat
To the point where there are countless studies where high level chess players aren't even good at checkers. Their reasoning in one game is all about patterns. Doesn't transfer to a really similar context. #bcedchat
