HI, Rafranz, Executive Director of Professional & Digital Learning, TX
Hi ya'll- High school teacher from NC- snowbound!
Q1. How would you define teacher leadership? Why is it important?
Robert from IL checking in.
A1: When teachers step up and do things that help their profession OUTSIDE the classroom. Enabled by other leaders
Hey all - Mike West here from and in NC
A1: Teacher leaders take risks, share their knowledge, and are receptive to constructive feedback. Positively influence others.
A1) I would define teacher leadership as those that are willing to take chances, try something new, and share in their journey.
A1: teachers are in the trenches & have unique perspective about what works best in schools. Their voice needs to be heard!
Q1: Teacher leadership: teacher willing to collaborate with colleagues, students &community. Showcase talents along the way
A1 TL is hopefully admin empowering Tr to make key decisions within classroom and school to benefit all St.
A1 It's doing work for kids and your school that go outside of the job description; taking chances; challenging the status quo
Hi Todd from Texas! I consider myself a 21st century principal! https://t.co/f396DrCs7M
Dave from MI. HS Forensic Science and Chemistry teacher. Jill's cohost and retweeter tonight.
A1 Teachers that take on responsibilities that are outside of their regular classroom duties Lead PD, work at district level etc
A1: Teacher leadership makes me think of effective collaboration, creativity, communication & critical thinking.
A1: Teacher leaders take risks and put themselves on the line if the best interest of students is being jeopardized.
Ts creating opps, taking risks, try new things and help Ss do same, to enhance learning potential, decrease fear
A1 Teacher who is modeling, guiding, proving input on school/district growth & empowering that in others-Makes schools stronger
A1 It's important because attributes of teacher leaders are the attributes that have made this country great in many fields
the quote. Enhancing learning potential. That's incredibly accurate.
A1: To me, T leadership looks like managing up. T's holding admins accountable just as they hold them https://t.co/8N93Ux4sYc
Teachers who work to collaborate and enrich colleagues
empowering that in others is huge
Jill, in 2016, I'm mystified by missed learning days, esp. w tech, planning, & creative hands-on work. https://t.co/EmBkxaGm77
We have no school tomorrow for kids and teachers go in delayed. A lot of ice, but getting better.
So true! https://t.co/kw2CeBvlQH
A1 It's important because attributes of teacher leaders are the attributes that have made this country great in many fields
A1: T leadership involves all skills that promote the mission of the district. Their leadership can make or break the mission
taking chances can better students' experiences, which can make all the difference in building rapport
Definitely. It's not about seeing that leadership in one representative but seeing it in all teachers
Agreed, I think we are getting closer
Thanks! Trying to fit thoughts into 140 :)
I'm xian, a 7/8 grade writing teacher supporting student organizing and justice in on SW side of Chi
and as we know, that rapport and relationship building is paramount.
A1: Teacher leadership is important because it helps build positive school culture.
Each teacher needs opportunities to lead
A1) Ts Leaders take on extra & invest time for Ss learning knowing the "pilot" might never take off.
Joe, EdTech dir from CLT, joining/lurking while running kids thru PM routine
teacher leadership: to go above and beyond. helping young people excel in and outside of the classroom.
it's a colossal mistake when that is underestimated. Both of you are on the money
decreasing fear is an interesting take, helps students feel comfortable in learning and growing
A1: Ts taking risks, highly collaborative, high data analysis skills and a great repertoire of inst skills
Ts/profs need to be more active in community, volunteering, on boards--& not just lib/school, but also civic grps.
agreed. Imperative to empower all stalk holders and ensure their voices is valued and heard.
Teacher leadership=courage to support students and community in their fight to self-determine education. https://t.co/LweGlNdTqh
Q1. How would you define teacher leadership? Why is it important?
Toshila, from Houston, TX just joining in.
I agree - partnerships are so crucial to systemwide success
couldn’t agree more, Jerod. It’s crazy it’s not talked about more.
A1: Teachers advocating, adopting, innovating, and being role models in current capacity, even without a "leadership position"
Counting down to tonight with on comprehension strategies!
Only 45 minutes to go!
Q2. How can you/we build teacher leadership within schools/districts?
And also someone who is willing to advocate that kids have the power to fight to self-determine education.
Support each other and promote innovation!
exactly. Don't need a fancy title to be a teacher leader. It can come without it.
A2) Continue the conversation. Encourage others to take leadership roles. Even if it's just for sharing a practice.
A2: Taking an interest in what Ts are passionate & excited about!
A2: As a classroom teacher, you have to lead yourself and encourage your co-workers colleagues to use their strengths
A2: Use their strengths to be champions of change, encourage growth, provide support, etc.
yes,too much time spent: content, textbooks, test scores, real learning happens in relationships
A2 mentoring, developing leaders through mentor relationships and opportunities, listen to and involve teachers
A2 - Allowing Ts to lead PDs and meetings. We learn best from one another. Gain confidence by sharing with others.
A2: provide differentiated professional levels beyond just Teacher --> Administrator. https://t.co/ykuc4Tb1ng
Q2. How can you/we build teacher leadership within schools/districts?
We all have a specialty that adds value to the world!
A2: T autonomy & flexibility to lead by example; show success & let others follow
A2 support each other. Take a friend to an edcamp. Introduce them to Jill. hide them from Nathan.
Hey ! Good to see you on here!
Important to look to develop those leaders https://t.co/EKG6ErUHlO
A2 mentoring, developing leaders through mentor relationships and opportunities, listen to and involve teachers
A2 Honestly, get rid of the constructs of titles determining who has a voice. Let teachers define pathways of growth.
A2 Recognize teachers who are positive leaders and encourage them when they take risks for their students.
A1: A teacher with leadership skills always admits when they're wrong and is always learning and innovations new methods.
A2: empower staff who are engaging Ss in creative and innovative ways. Ts need to time to meet w/ others f2f
A2 Give Trs opp. to lead staff PD, encourage + fund them to present at conferences.
A2: it's important for admin to identify future leaders for district. Our superintendent leads our admin in how to do this
A2 Leadership must realize that they don't have all the great ideas; allow open forums for teachers to express ideas is a must
A1: Leading by example. Showing students my active interest in lifelong learning. Future ready. https://t.co/z3z1RfBkh7
Q1. How would you define teacher leadership? Why is it important?
Hiding them from you would be a disservice!
A2: partnering with your union reps, partnering with T's that share similar philosophies, striving to be a team
A2 encourage others to talk about their awesome ideas
A2: Move away from uniform PD w/high stakes punitive eval to self-directed PD, eval w/mentors/cohorts. https://t.co/iZ32cs74Ad
Q2. How can you/we build teacher leadership within schools/districts?
A2: Create a district hashtag. Encourage others to connect and share the work they're doing that engages Ss
A1: This is a great definition!
I could only dream of a union rep in NC....
I like playing hide and seek
Provide opportunities for the PD needs of all your learners, especially leaders.
https://t.co/nubtDck3vz
A2: Move away from uniform PD w/high stakes punitive eval to self-directed PD, eval w/mentors/cohorts. https://t.co/iZ32cs74Ad
Q2. How can you/we build teacher leadership within schools/districts?
no doubt. Never is talked about, even when teachers are in school. Blows my mind.
AGREED with it would be a disservice!
And be aware of race, class and other demographics in considering mentorship.
Reading regularly, makes me realize that I'm philosophically as far removed from certain people in the profession, as possible
A2 Opps for Ts to collab, provide PD sessions for each other, encourage time for collaborating
A2 invariably means collaboration: assisting each other for indiv.growth, effectiveness &school/student/org success.
LOL
I didn't follow the feed.
https://t.co/6OTuJoQYD0
A2 support each other. Take a friend to an edcamp. Introduce them to Jill. hide them from Nathan.
A1: Teacher leadership, as w any leadership, begins & ends w relational generosity and servitude. We must serve Ts, Ss, and Ps.
are the way to go with PD! 1 of the most engaging and personalized experiences I've had in education
What's funny/scary is when you are moving to self-directed PD and teachers still want full standardized controlled PD
It's hard to please everyone :(
Had mixed experiences w/. Great structure, people, but often defensive about institutional exclusion
A2: Create PD model based on the model. This leads to teachers taking risks and sharing ways they engage kids.
Teachers are the WORST about changing. Notice how everyone always sits in the same seats at staff meetings
educators need to feel as though they can speak without fear ... Admin needs to reassure Ts that they are safe.
Nope, so you create multiple pathways and pray that the others cross the line sooner than later
A2: Make the mentor/ mentee relationship something to be glued as opposed to one more box to check on the eval system.
Curious about this - say more about this https://t.co/sW98D5J05v
Had mixed experiences w/. Great structure, people, but often defensive about institutional exclusion
Ehab that happens my palm had an involuntary reflex to smack my forehead
A district hashtag is fun- my district is currently doing a twitter challenge. Has been a great avenue to connect
That's not just teachers. It's human nature. It was the same in the corporate world.
A2 There is much we edus can learn re: from leaders outside the K12/univ arena.
Check out
What do you mean by defensive about institutional exclusion?
A2: Building teacher leadership is more than peer obs and workshops. Leaders must make time for teacher voices to be heard.
the leader is the one being asked the questions ...
I depends where you go. There are some edcamps that have presenters
A2: Also, seek out teachers to lead PD in their individual school. However, ask more Ts to lead instead of just the usual few.
Yes my teams PD's are all active PD & some still complain they want sit & give. Its a checklist for them
there seems to be a lack of interest for F2F, but that kind of collaboration is so valuable in a tech world.
Similar 2 self-designed assessment, unrealistic to expect folks to leave oppressive structures instantly
Yep! De-programming is hard but effort in doing it is a must! https://t.co/yokWfcfzTt
Similar 2 self-designed assessment, unrealistic to expect folks to leave oppressive structures instantly
isn't that kind of the antithesis of an edcamp? Unless presenters are impromptu and participant led? https://t.co/fX0BhsZEUF
I depends where you go. There are some edcamps that have presenters
Q3. What contributions have you made as a teacher leader in your school, district, and community?
we need to ... It is ok to learn on our own ... Find our own answers ... Build our
Some regions respond to racial homogeneity critiques w/"If you don't like it, make your own", excuses
. A3: Helped roll out and
each day new challenge to tweet: from sharing articles, retweets, follows, pictures in class etc. Then use #

Q2. How can you/we build teacher leadership within schools/districts?
A3: Focus on tech integration, highly collaborative model, vast knowledge of C&I + inst strategies for kids in poverty
A3 At this point, the best thing that I can do is to help create pathways for growth and support teachers in doing it.
A3: serve as union rep in building, work w/ senior students and standards to do 20% projects/genius hour in class
. A3: Helped introduce tools like and to to others at my school
love genius hour https://t.co/M6xTIffXWu

And you're doing an awesome in this!
https://t.co/NDJqmNUPPC

. A3: Helped introduce tools like and to to others at my school
What makes you say at this point? I see you always doing awesome things.
. Nothing makes me happier than finding a new tool that can help meet a need in the classroom!
A3: I have contributed by leading PD, writing about and presenting on our successes, and sharing best practices with others.
Intriguing!Many
Ts would likely jump on it.Those not interested in leadership shouldn’t feel obligated. https://t.co/pMuGcAuANn
A3 As head football coach, my team went undefeated; introducing some colleagues to Twitter & innovative PD
A3: Supported students in publishing their own work and building a student movement for educational equity.
Give it a try- I've connected w/ all sorts of new teachers in district, & built a stronger rapport with super.
That wasn't meant to be taken in a negative light. I'm not in the classroom anymore. My job is to support learning
Q3: Shared PD, helped train teachers, available to teachers for tech help and idea bouncing, positive. https://t.co/NBo6Zitgg1

This yr is my 1st in leadership as a member of our team and PLC lead for SS. It's been a blast.
Oh yeah, thanks for that opportunity Jill! :)
A3 Trying to model restorative practices as the disciplinarian; hosting our first next month
A2) Best way to help other Ts is to meet them right where they are, help them see where they can go.
PD Bites..... 15 minute PD once a week before school.... Great to introduce new technologies, etc.
Layfolk that read should know that there are a ton of effective teachers that don't share all/any of the philosophies expressed
A3: I think my biggest contribution has been sharing positivity&passion for teaching. I’m still growing.Ts see me taking risks.
A3) I've been given opportunities to help lead PD within our school and our district.
A3 go where I am asked to go
I lead by asking my S's to lead. Prove that S can handle responsibility for their learning.
I'm confused. What philosophies are these?
A3 Honestly, The best part of my job is being able to say "Yes" and "Yes And". Necessary for teachers/student leaders
Piloting new programs, mentoring teachers, Implementing quarterly, school-wide awards, SIP writing, conference delegate
digging it. I created a hashtag for our district. Should def give this a try. Thx!
your positivity shines through your tweets Michala!
A3: demonstrating that we ALL are learners, starting with me.

Q2. How can you/we build teacher leadership within schools/districts?
I can do the visit when we hold
Q4. What inspires and/or encourages you to lead? How do you balance your time?
A3: Leading pd sessions, volunteering w/ the Sunshine Committee (staff culture), any way 2 contribute 2 our culture & success
I’m with you! Others see us making mistakes but not giving up!
Totally agree,I find it funny when my Ss come tell me they get to play things like & a lot more!
We are looking forward to that!
As a recovering perfectionist, it can be a challenge. But it's reality.
A4 I'm inspired by our kids. I'm also inspired by teachers who feel free to do what they need. That matters
We have some of your posters (appropriately attributed) hanging in our school :)
A4. Transforming the learning landscape and doing what's best for students is what encourages me.
A4: Getting better for my kids inspires me. Pushing the limits of what's possible to make learning meaningful and memorable.
A4: MY STUDENTS!!!! There is always time to lead...
A4 - Ss inspire me. I want to do right by them and so I lead in my school to ensure others are always learning and improving
A4 My family, my faith, and my desire to see kids make a better life than they are currently living
A4: When I see others do it. Try to surround my life with people that lift me higher. I always make sure I have me time built in
"Indiana Jones was one of my greatest influencers."
A4 other people. Not keynote speakers. The little people doing the grunt work
No matter how great classroom goes, if it doesn't change structures of oppression, it won't be enough. https://t.co/dZThgGK3JV
Q4. What inspires and/or encourages you to lead? How do you balance your time?
A4 Ss inspire me to keep learning, learn to juggle a lot of tasks! for myself
A4 Passing the torch. Investing in other Tr because it was done for me when I was young. Servant Leadership
Sometimes you do what you need even when you don't feel free to do so! :)
My Leadership page https://t.co/vY6Q9LsPtB "Leadership is not about creating followers only. It's about creating other leaders."
A4: building a team. Let them run with their ideas. Empower for enhancement!
A4: I am inspired by my amazing district leadership team & our district hashtags ( & )
A4) Those AHA moments where you realize that your contributions do make a difference. Just like when that happens with students
A4: I have yet to find a balance bc my career/life are very intertwined. The lightbulb moment from a T or S encourages me
I’m encouraged when Ts ask me to in their rooms, discuss their ideas, collaborate, and when i see the talent in our building!
Those are my favorite! Believe me, we have a ton of that going on around here!
Makes my day to know that a positive message is being spread in a visual. Thanks so much!
A4: I am inspired to lead by my students who push themselves everyday & my teachers who do whatever it takes to get them there.
agreed! I've benefited from great mentors throughout my career.
I totally sympathize and understand your statement here
A4 As a , I am passionately committed to the success of every student K12/univ for their lives of service in the world.
A4: inspired by students "my kids"- they challenge me and give me joy at the same time. Inspired by other T's/colleagues as well
A4: I'm inspired when my Ss remember the cheesy jokes we come up with to remember stuff. And when they're up and participating.
Especially when she joins :-)
So true!
https://t.co/UOHl2wNr2Q
A4: I am inspired to lead by my students who push themselves everyday & my teachers who do whatever it takes to get them there.
A4 Balance is definitely learned. Easier now that my own kids are older. Family first helps my balance.
A4: Inspired to share knowledge, encouraged to make a change, balance time by spreading out over days. https://t.co/1mbQEvJR3n
Q4. What inspires and/or encourages you to lead? How do you balance your time?
Isn't there a quote about students not remembering what you taught but how you made them feel?
A4: balance through living mindfully. Mindfulness daily practices are powerful to achieve balance
Need to leave early. Beginning of new univ term. Still busy w all of that. Best to all.
Do check out: https://t.co/u2L7kU6TVs
A4: And I keep balance in my life because in the end it makes me a better teacher. You have to make yourself leave school.
be good to yourself so you can be good for your students :) https://t.co/xMIYlXr6xV
A4: And I keep balance in my life because in the end it makes me a better teacher. You have to make yourself leave school.
A4: Balance is essential for leaders to sustain themselves long-term. Find your passion(s) and commit to it everyday.
A4 work is life. Life is work. Is that balanced?
Inspired as well when kids come back and say thank you because I taught them something that mattered.
cheesy jokes and participation are the best combination in a classroom- it's teaching gold
Balance is a challenge. It's hard to keep it at times but my family is worth it, my school family is worth it, and I’m worth it.
Q5. How do external factors affect building teacher leadership? What are strategies to over come these factors?
A4: Inspiration is always the kids! knowing my contributions can greatly effect their school experience for the better :)
A5: Sometimes I feel like it's the same people doing all the work and I get very frustrated....wish I knew how to better manage
A5: workload is often killer. Especially for SPED teachers https://t.co/2JlkeBjTW6
Q5. How do external factors affect building teacher leadership? What are strategies to over come these factors?
A5: They push me to think outside of the box and more critically about what needs to happen
I find that I don't think what I do is work.
A5: District leadership gives permission for Ts to take risks and be reflective. Student-centered approach.
A5: Some think you have to leave the classroom to lead. We have a responsibility to shatter this misconception.
A4: By working on myself as hard as I work for kids. Hobbies, Reading, working out, my faith, family, and friends.
I don't either but most see the job and the time I put in
In Chi, our district, city, state leadership are so corrupt, can be difficult for eds to avoid cynicism https://t.co/0DGFnraFOT
Q5. How do external factors affect building teacher leadership? What are strategies to over come these factors?
Plus more is getting pushed on reg ed T's. Test prep, 504 accoms, RTI, etc.
A5 External factors can be discouraging. Encourage teachers to keep putting teaching/learning first above the noise
Tough one....being able to disconnect school and home life when possible. It's the curse of teaching...but is it?
A5 I sometimes wonder if internal factors like mindset keep good teachers from being the leaders they could be.
A5) Structures that are currently in place may not allow for teacher leadership and change. Many demands on a teacher.
That is a tough one to balance.
https://t.co/JFji9i9dYc
Tough one....being able to disconnect school and home life when possible. It's the curse of teaching...but is it?
Absolutely. Teaching is HARD. The paperwork associated with SPED teachers is often underappreciated tho https://t.co/dyMZkKp79h
Plus more is getting pushed on reg ed T's. Test prep, 504 accoms, RTI, etc.
A5: Lack of support, time in the day to build TL. Overcome by making StaffDev teacher led. https://t.co/fAB36EYbWv
Q5. How do external factors affect building teacher leadership? What are strategies to over come these factors?
A5 some people are naturally scared to take a leap
A5:There are many external factors that we can’t control so we need to be extra sensitive to factors we can.Positive leadership.
Wow - never thought about that, but that may be the case. Good stuff!
and the paperwork in SPED is possibly way too much. Too much time spent on paper instead of the Ss.
Teachers have a life outside of school. The most dedicated have other responsibilities. Balance, work ethic, love of career
I know some really good teachers, and the only people that really know are their St. Need encouragement
Q6. What is a take-away that you had from tonight’s ?
Next Week's topic is: RTI, 504, IEP & Regular Ed Accommodations - How Do We Ween SS & Can Tech Help? See you Sunday 8 PM ET US.
Thanks for the convo y'all
A6) Takeaway: It takes much at varied levels to help to develop teacher leaders. Not an easy thing to do.
A6: helped me realize that others may limit themselves with teacher leadership b/c they feel they can't do it
A5: Big factor is that some Ts need to be asked to lead and some Ts fear the animosity that could develop from coworkers
A6: others find relationships important! And, collaboration & encouragement are key to building good educational leaders
A5: Publicly acknowledging teachers (shoutouts), delegating duties 2 more than the"faithful few",strong, purposeful committees
Good point. Need to encourage those to take on leadership roles. https://t.co/ZYbFsbnSWH
A6: helped me realize that others may limit themselves with teacher leadership b/c they feel they can't do it
A5 time management, so much involved in teaching, have to set goals, stay positive, support each other
A6 Putting empowering student leadership and self-advocacy is #1 for teachers. Thnx for that reminder
A6: My takeaway is that I do my best work when I am both inspired & challenged.
A6: Teacher leadership needs to be cultivated and PD needs to be personalized and teacher led.
Teacher Leadeership is important for school culture and it must be modeled and shared for increased growth.
= best chat! Have a great week everyone!
Thanks everyone for the chat tonight!
A6: we need to inspire leadership through practicing it
A6: Leaders needed in all capacities to build a strong school to provide the best ed.Empower a T today & T will empower another.
A5: Ground all decisions in the best interest of kids, build a staff culture where teachers feel led, supported & want to lead #
