We will be using the standard Q1, A1 format and our discussion will be archived after the chat.
-
Question 1 is on its way in one minute!!!
-
-
A1: We use to blog & we love it, as it is so simple to use. I've also used , which was great as well.
-
-
Good evening No hockey and no school functions tonight. Glad to be able to join in.
-
Hi Cary, great to have you join! Do you like Blogger? I haven't used that one.
-
we are just getting blogs up and running.
-
A1 Our grades 4-8 students have wordpress blogs.
-
Wonderful to have you here Michelle!
-
I used WordPress in my Masters courses, but find Weebly more intuitive. Do you like WP?
-
Just got here! Kristin from Lansing, MIchigan. ELA and SS. Yes, my students blog on KidBlog! I love the platform, easy to use.
-
It's an exciting endeavour! I'm sure your Ss will enjoy them!
-
Welcome Kristin! It's great to see you! I really like KidBlog, especially how much you can control what is posted.
-
Our next question is coming up in in just 60 seconds!
-
-
I've used Blogger for years. It's more "open" than other platforms which has pros and cons.
-
We started with that because I led the parade when I was taking my Masters. Now they have years built up.
-
A2: Time to blog & comment is a challenge & ensuring that it stays engaging, while still remaining objective-driven & meaningful.
-
It is so great when Ss can have a portfolio of work built up over years! VERY cool!
-
A2 There are ALWAYS some students that can't handle the log on process not matter how simple it is.
-
Couldn't agree more! Love for ease & teacher control 2 approve posts & watch 4 inappropriate stuff
-
Very true! I was concerned to move from b/c it had so much security built in.
-
Hi, . Marilyn from CA. Really want to start my Ss blogging, but not sure how to begin.
-
we have Weebly but were concerned abt long term use. We pay for accts; when S move on and the next teacher doesn't blog then what?
-
I didn't even think of that! It can be very frustrating :)
-
Welcome Marilyn! There are many wonderful, free places to begin. IMO is a great first blog spot
-
Ha, ha, especially when I mentioned we have been at it for years.
-
My former Ss still have access to their Weebly. I've paid for a Pro account, but it has been SO worth it!
-
Question 3 is up in just one minute!
-
;) Ah, the joys of teaching...repetition is our best friend!
-
-
yes we have pro too but what happens when they move on? We can't keep track of who is continuing to blog.
-
A3:Ss have an audience, writing has relevance & it can demonstrate growth over time & is reflective. Different media can be added.
-
my biggest challenge is knowing the blogs need to be open to the world but keeping them safe.
-
When I think back over all the years we have been blogging I really can't think of a single bad experience.
-
True. This is our 2nd year using Weebly & I add blog pages for each S. Not sure if this can be done indefinitely or not.
-
A3 A place to write, share, collaborate and reflect. Shows a picture of development over years.
-
not sure this went through so will share again. This is the project I'm working on. https://t.co/gbq3gMDxhn sorry if repeat.

not sure this went through so will share again. This is the project I'm working on. https://t.co/k0NeEtfiRJ sorry if repeat.
-
I used to worry about this SO much! I love how relevant digital citizenship becomes b/c of blogging.
-
-
Thanks for sharing this Cary! I LOVE what you had to say!
-
Hard to believe how fast the time is flying! Question 4 in just 60 seconds!
-
-
-
I think you have captured it all SO well!
-
A4 Most of our sharing on the blog is related to curricular outcomes so I assess it like I would anything else.
-
Having an authentic voice is so important! I love that quiet students can really shine through blogging.
-
I feel strongly that blogs shld not be assessed. I wld assess writing pieces that are perhaps posted on the blog.a blog is sacred.
-
Your comment really speaks to the purpose of the blog. I think that it is really important to determine!
-
Are you ready? Question 5 is coming up in the next minute!
-
-
A5: We use them as electronic portfolios & our place to reflect on our learning. We connect with other classes through them too.
-
A5 Today we reflected on our projects and posted a link to share our learning.
-
Love it! It is a GREAT way to share projects of all kinds with Ps, other schools & the world!
-
love the reflection part!
-
That's becoming my favorite part, even though we are still learning how to do it well :)
-
Question 6 in 60 seconds!
-
As a place to express, share, reflect and improve craft. We learn to write by writing. This is a place to hone voice.
-
-
What a GREAT reason! My Ss definitely aren't there, although it IS improving!
-
got to go but I loved our chat! Let's stay connected!
-
-
A6: Have student create vlogs (video blogs) more often & DEEPLY reflect! I want our class blog to become more dynamic as well.
-
A6 I also would like to use video more and continue to work on the reflection part to build their portfolios.
-
Question 7 is right on deck, I can't wait to hear your ideas!
-
Sorry...my son called from college! Had to chat! A5) I use blogs for reading responses, genius hour projects & to share writing
-
-
That is the BEST reason to be missing this chat Kristin :) I love your uses of blogs!
-
A7:We connect through QuadBlogging,Twitter & with our Ps & Ss in our division, with our blogs. GHOs have made this even better!
-
A7) I invite adults (principals, other teachers) to interact with Ss. Also is a great way to connect.
-
-
A7: is also a wonderful resource! Putting a request out on Twitter almost always gets a response :)
-
It is a global connection of 4 classes. Each class is featured for a week & the other classes comment on those blogs.
-
Final question coming up already!
-
I don't assess blogs formally. I use it to guide writing instruction and to encourage authentic interactions.
-
I was part of it officially for a few rounds & then created a more organic quad through Twitter connections :)
-
-
-
A8) Ss reading blogs are great: they share about their reading. They write opinions about books, & then Ss can comment
-
