A1: Making the effort to know their names & the guardians official connection to the S (parent, gparent, aunt, foster, etc). We also have TV announcements running in our lobby which allows Ss & Ps to see what's going on in our school. #oklaed
A1) Talk to them! Get to know them sincerely! Invest in their lives - the great, the good, the bad, and the ugly. All of it and stick with them. #oklaed

I admit I am horrible with systems to reach out to Ps. However, I am a guru with my Ss. Biggest thing is spending time with them in class. We laugh and cry together. #oklaed

A1: We encourage and have many Ts that do Home to School Connection letters, introducing themselves to the family, sharing expectations, how to contact, etc. In the classroom Ts do "all about me" boards/stories to get to know one another. Just to name a few. #oklaed

A1. Communication Both Ways. To many times T’s talk and talk. But it is when we start listening to S’s and P’s is when we start the partnership in their education. #oklaed
A1: show up for their events outside of the school day. Notice their interests, then invest in them. I recently nominated a S for a stem award bc he deserved it. His mom cried. Go the extra mile outside of 7 to 3 pm. #oklaed
A1) Take time to know your Ss, listen and build relationships...recognize each S as an individual who has value beyond a grade or a test score. #OklaEd
A1: Being intentional about being visible and available for students & staff. Also, it doesn’t hurt to make positive phone calls home every chance you get. #oklaed
A1) As a Spanish educator I use PQA (personalized questions and answers) to help involve the Ss in the lesson, but at the same time I am able to learn A LOT about them and their personal likes and interests. All while using the target language (Spanish) #oklaed

Icebreakers instead of syllabus and paperwork the first few days—first assignment in leadership is facilitating an icebreaker for the rest of the class so that when we get to i-novels, it is not surprising when they share more about themselves. #oklaed

A1: So many great getting to know you activities. I really enjoy "that's me!" It incorporates movement and builds community in the process. T observe how Ss interact and connect. So valuable in building the foundation w Ss. #oklaed

A1) One of the most important things we do is build relationships with students. You must find time to have nonacademic conversations and listen to your students. When they know you truly care, they will work to meet your expectations. #OklaEd

A1 it’s when we experience our S’s in their most difficult times that we make some significant progress in building relationships. When we are able to show them we still care the next day by truly making it a new day, they begin to trust the relationship. #oklaed
A1b: This year my students each made a slide of a slideshow telling me who they were. They could change font, color, etc, and used their Chromebook cameras to take a picture. I learned SO much about them and their abilities that I still reference it. #oklaed

A2) Independent practice is an important part of learning. “Homework” or work outside of class can be an effective part of the learning process. It should never be used as a punishment or just to create a grade. #OklaEd
A1 Homework has limited usefulness. High school students electing for AP classes need it to replicate the college experience. Otherwise, what we receive as teachers rarely tells us what students have learned. #oklaed
A2 Most of my Ss have jobs, siblings to care for, or other activities outside of school, so I limit homework to just asking them to read for 15 minutes. Read anything! Everything else is done in class. #OklaEd

A2 - If my Ss have HW it is reading. I understand teaching time management, but at the end of the day we must ask what purpose HW serves. If I’m assigning it to “teach responsibility” I should probably rethink it. We work Ss to DEATH & more is not always better. #oklaed

A2 it’s never an absolute answer. It depends. Homework for homework’s sake or using it to teach responsibility I believe is wrong. If they know how to do it and have the situation at home to do it then it can be good in moderation. #oklaed

A2: I do not assign homework. The only homework in my class is the work my students do not complete. I refuse to interfere with my students time after school. If my students give me my time, I will give them their time. I do give extra credit to anyone who wants it. #oklaed
A1) I strive to make connections beyond the classroom. With some students, it is taking time to learn about their hobbies or favorite sports teams. With others, it could be helping parent connect with other social services in the area. #oklaed
A2. HW has to have a distinct purpose in order to be effective. If it's just for a "grade", or to "check a box", it's a disservice to students and families. I say this as both a T and a dad. Best practice is to make things "real world" relevant. #oklaed

A2. I honestly go back and forth with this question, especially being a former math teacher and knowing that practice is key. But on the HS level, cheating is at an all time high. Apps, friends, google, etc. So the homework is no longer meaningful. #oklaed

A2: I have Ss complete time management work. They have due dates, set goals, and work on it until they finish. Each day they have a goal to complete. #oklaed

A2) Every year I think this is the year to end homework but surveys and parent feedback consistently show our parents like homework because it gives them an opportunity to be active in their child’s education...homework is like dieting...everything in moderation! #oklaed
A2: I think homework can build good habits, but I want the homework to have purpose because it sometimes takes away from family time than also serves an important purpose. #oklaed
A2) Assign only work that is meaningful. HW only to practice and refine skills. Learning is ongoing and shouldn't have a timeframe built on it for practice. Don't allow 0s if you assigned it. Require a showing of mastery. Allow corrections to encourage increased mastery. #oklaed
A2-Homework has its place as an extension of the classroom assignment if a concept needs more time or a little review. However, teachers must get away from the concept of “By Gosh, I had homework, so these kids must also have homework” mentality. #OklaEd

A2. I dont often assign hw. Any work that goes home is work the student didn't finish in class. I don't because so many of my kids have after school jobs and I also don't have enough books to send home with the students. #oklaed
A2: Most of the time, I don't assign homework because it doesn't get done. But sometimes Ss need it, like if they waste class time or need extra time. My AP class often has at least reading, though. Any student going to college NEEDS it to be prepared. #oklaed

A2: Homework is overrated in my opinion. Repetition can be a good teacher at times, but homework may not be a priority for some when they leave our campuses....survival is. #oklaed

Homework needs to be specific and not used as just another grade. It is also a good way to teach students ownership and responsibility outside the classroom. #oklaed

A2b) teach in those fundamental years and summer camp that put us in a position to be successful without required time out of the school day. Being in a small school, my Ss are all involved in other things so we do what we can do they don’t have to choose. #oklaed
Homework should connect parents to their child's education. What this looks like depends on the grade level, but it should be accessible and practical for ALL parents and students. #oklaed

A2. It’s important to remember that the practice we want them to do probably isn’t what it looks like. Often “homework” is completed sloppily in the 10 minutes before class or over the shoulder of a classmate. Obviously MY Ss would never do that, but I’ve heard stories. #oklaed
Besides, if you REALLY want to punish Ss, make them give a speech in front of their peers. J/K. IMO, we need more oral communication practice not less #OklaEd
A3 Are we really here to gatekeep/rank-and-sort Ss? We should be helping Ss grow by providing actionable feedback and plenty of time to revise so students can master skills #OklaEd
A3: I'm a bigger believer in mastery based grading practices - the objective should always be does the student understand the concept, therefore, we have to make sure that the assessment is truly assessing the Ss knowledge/understanding #oklaed
A2. I do not believe homework is a best practice. Students should be working to build character and spend time with family.
Practice comes in many shapes and sizes. A school day should be enough practice for most students. #OklaED
A2: Being a teacher that does not give HW, I feel that with students that do many extracurricular activities after school have a real struggle when they get home late and then have to do HW. If an assignment has not been finished in class, that should be what they do. #oklaed

A4: Factors outside of the classroom may hinder student motivation. When I feel this in a student, I tend to speak to him or her outside of the classroom and mention one of his or her achievements. Sometimes, a little encouragement can go a long way. #oklaed

Book “End of Average” talks about how we assume Ss are low if they don’t learn on the same timeline as the average. “Grading should be based on competency of the skill not all Ss getting it at same time.” Very enlightening book and something we must work harder on. #oklaed
