#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
Nic Hahn here! Hey #k12artchat... it's been a long time. I'm happy to say there is no football or volleyball tonight so I can join in the fun! I'm a K-5 Art Teacher from Minnesota.
Amanda here! From the birthplace of Elvis Presley: Tupelo, MS #k12artchat I've been challenging myself to see what I can do in about 30 minutes https://t.co/2oEpWu1ARf

A1: I'm a little behind on getting this started, but I'm not giving up. I was inspired by @NBCMakingIt and I will be providing some Art Challenges for the students of @HassanElem this year outside of class! #K12ArtChat

A1 I haven’t done this yet... What about having your Ss think of the challenge? Fun and interesting topics always come up in conversations while working. I’ll have to try it and report back! #k12ArtChat
#k12artchat A1b I wonder if Ss could leverage stories and the media we capture by the tonne. It helps in at least 2 ways, reflecting on what we thought was worthy of capture in the first place & how its worth might increase seen by other eyes.

#K12ArtChat A2 today I happened to have some pink flying pigs. Students assembled them and it evolved into a stop animation collaboration. It was the creative break we needed.
A1: I have also given students a small jewelry box and asked them to turn it into something else... "not a box"
They created beds, sandboxes, vehicles... #k12artchat
A2: Surprise is always a great hook to quickly get kids flowing creatively - not know what they get to create with - mission impossible or mcgyver style #K12ArtChat
A2: I would reiterate what @GrundlerArt mentioned with A1...Mystery supplies are exciting and a good way to 'get rid' of the over abundance in the Art Room Storage closet :) #K12ArtChat
A1 We are doing an October drawing challenge in art club. Between that and my 8th graders doing Inktober- they are asking some pretty interesting questions and really have to think outside the box for solutions. #K12ArtChat
A2 I’m giving credit for this one to a current student of mine. Shake up the theme or idea using a random sentence generator. It’s challenging to think inside the box too! #K12ArtChat
@burgessdave@dbc_inc gave us to the opportunity to host a #tlap about #inktober to help kick it off! Really great to see some many different teachers engage in creative challenges #K12ArtChat
A4: I'm trying a new way to assess this year... it's called the 'Show Off'. I'm 'challenging' S to show off what they learned in class to earn the top grade= a more authentic way to earn a top grade. #K12ArtChat
A4: Last year my 1st grs had to work together, they cut out shapes and places them on the paper, but before they glued them they had to remove 1, Cut another & trade 2 others! Small groups #K12ArtChat
A2: I think you have to know your students well in order to do this and be successful. It has to be appealing to their needs and interests first. #k12artchat
A5. So far haven't had one fail in class but I've flopped many times trying to complete a full challenge like #inktober - I started it but just have so much on my plate right now that it flopped. #K12ArtChat
A5: one time students did a chalk drawing from a gridded image. Each kid got one box and they couldn’t see the rest. I did something wrong and the picture was still scrambled in the end. I used it as a “fail is the first attempt of learning” moment. 😂😬 #K12ArtChat
A3: Ss are currently working on a project about their animal spirit. The research questions relate to Life Science. The research drives the search for images related to their animal. #K12ArtChat
A5: It wasn't a creative challenge, per se, but I had a newspaper sculpture lesson tank BIG TIME. It didn't work out and we threw the zillion little pieces out! Nothing was salvageable.
#k12artchat
@k12artchat A3: The first week of school we combined life sciences with art to talk about lightening bugs and the Ss were challenged to create them using materials given. A smaller, very successful challenge #k12artchat
A6: Creative challenges give students the power to think like an Artist, it allows them to take chances and explore. Challenges create a interaction and engagement with the Art Studio. Inside class or outside, Art Challenges are beneficial. #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat A6 it’s important to set artistic targets that level up, evolve, and challenge you. Never stop learning how to push your talent and gain new skills.
A5: The Ss watch me paint some of my passes in class. I explained how challenging it was tho cut the skull pass. Pictures from start to finish. #K12ArtChat
Frightening Bonus:
Sometimes we need a jumpstart for your own creativity. What creative challenge has helped you get your creativity rolling? Share the Hashtag & any pictures of your work you have created? #K12ArtChat
A6: creative challenges can be make or break it for some students in the art room. I always tell my students that they are an opportunity for innovation. #K12ArtChat
A6: Most the time I think they are great jumpstARTs to get brains going in creative ways, but I do think time constraints are helpful for moving it forward #K12ArtChat

@k12artchat A4: I’ll be starting digital art soon creating for the 3D printer. My goal is to give them a challenge to complete such as designing new chairs for the art room. #k12artchat
Bonus: I started Camilla D’Errico’s drawlloween but I couldn’t find time to do 2 challenges this month. So... here are my ZomBEEs. I’ve drawn 5 or 6 things with bees since this drawing. #K12ArtChat
A6: I gave creative 3 min post it challenges and would hang the answers, but only having 3o min total, couldn’t keep up w it. The students loved it #K12artchat

A4: In my choice-based studio, we have a whole “box of challenges” sitting in our inspiration center. Instead of throwing a "failed" artwork away, artists contribute and also pull from it to give something new life. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! lol #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat here’s a couple of my inktober sketches. I’m not super comfortable with ink drawing , but this has helped me see what I like. #aesmarinersart
Bonus: the teachers asking for passes help to get my creativity going. I add the excitement when Ss see me working on the painting process. They ask who it is for. #K12ArtChat
A5: Yes and sometimes I let it keep going because it’s interestingness it’s morphing and sometimes I stop the whole thing dead in its tracks because the students are frustrated. Both ways are teaching moments. :) #K12ArtChat
A6: Yes and no. I think it depends on the students and what motivates them. You might have some who get excited and some who panic. Then there’s the few not motivated by anything. #knowyourstudents#K12ArtChat
