A1: When we designed our literature, we wanted to showcase an equal gender balance, a diversity of different talents, backgrounds, and interests so that our books were relatable to all children #PeekaChat
Hey everyone! Sorry I'm jumping in a few minutes late. We have 11 days of school left and I am SWAMPED as i'm sure most people are! (This is Amber, K-5 Global Studies Teacher from central Florida and I'm happy to get a chance to chat diversity with you all!)
#Peekachat
This is so incredibly important. We are finally seeing a shift in diversity with toys and movies. So thankful that literature is right behind and ready to take a forefront. Our Ss need to know that they are important and represented. <3 #PeekaChat
Whoops I forgot the hashtag! I'm in Toronto! I used to be an ASL interpreter in a highschool setting. I am now on the Comms team at @csiTO! #peekachat (I swear I am a social media professional haha.)
A2: Some great books on diversity: I Love Saturdays y domingos by Alma Flor Ada, We're All Wonders by R.J. Palacio, The Sandwich Swap by Kelly DiPucchio #PeekaChat
Thank you!! This is a wonderful book about a Deaf dinosaur child who runs away from home because her parents won't let her learn ASL. It's a very common experience for Deaf kids, the author is Deaf and drew on her own life to write it. https://t.co/JEeCAFYiqQ#peekachat
A1: Nick from California, sped teacher, diversity looks like all other great literature speaking stories with many perspectives that are common to our real world. #Peekachat
A2: A good book from our collection is our book on Empathy where our character Ines moves from Mexico to Peekaville and the pals have to understand her persepctive #PeekaChat
Also worth a shoutout: @FlamingoRampant, a Toronto-based press people publishing feminist + racially diverse + GLBTQ celebratory (super cute) books for kids! #PeekaChat
OMG, we read this and it is phenomenal. The story layout with two person narrative was something my Ss really loved. They were so up in arms about the girls not being treated fairly. #peekachat
A1 Good evening #PeekaChat, Akilah, from VA, Professional Learning Specialist. Diversity in literature to me include the characters, how they look, the themes, and the language.
A2 Rosie Revere Engineer (Andrea Beaty & her others in that genre). Each Kindness (Jaqueline Woodson & The Other Side & others) So many. Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig #peekachat
A2. My two favorite books to teach empathy and that our words and actions can impact others are Wonder and Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. Message is worth repeating year after year with my Ss,as I start each school year with this read aloud and the crumpled heart story #peekachat

We did an old 60 minutes segment where they followed the Sudanese Lost Boys as they came to the United States. My Ss were so shocked at how hard it was for them to assimilate to the culture here. #peekachat
A3: Know the makeup of your class, know what kind of stories they want to read about, and use books to teach them about other cultures not necessarily present in your classroom. #PeekaChat
Yes and we’d also look at similarities. Especially for young students understanding how we are also alike then look at differences as something to honor and respect #peekachat

YES!! This is one of the major things I teach in my global studies class is that we are much more alike than we are different. Let's celebrate our differences, but also embrace the things that we have in common. #PeekaChat
A4: Ss being taught that diversity is the norm will lead them to grow up without thinking of diversity as a sensitive topic, but rather as something to be celebrated. #Peekachat
This list says it's only about kids on the autism spectrum but really there are all different kinds of diversity on here! Amazing! #PeekaChathttps://t.co/5K3Lz8Kft2
A4: The impact of intentionally exposing students to diversity in literature is immediate-and has long term impacts. You are cultivating seeds of #empathy, kinndness & compassion in the whole child. It's big. #PeekaChat
A4: Exposing Ss to diversity will allow them to understand new perspectives different from their own. The animal characters we have in Peekapak allows Ss to understand the perspective of someone totally different from themselves. #PeekaChat
I love❤️this statement and it's true. It's our moral imperative as educators to be intentional about cultivating themes of diversity in our students. @Peekapak is an invaluable resource to support this important work #PeekaChat

A4. The Ss begin sharing ideas of each other and learnin to accept other people for their differences and that they are just like us in many ways! #peekachat
Absolutely! And making sure that teaching diversity in literature is not an isolated event but done consistently and seamlessly to build empathy from day one. #peekachat
