Run by Iowa educators, #IAedchat is on Twitter the first, second, and third Sundays each month at 8:00pm CST. We have added #IAedchat LIVE to the fourth Sunday of the month at 8:00pm CST. This will take place in Google Hangout on Air. We will share the invitation and link to #IAedchat LIVE each month.
Fellow educators, if you have a little time tonight, please feel free to join us in #iaedchat for some professional conversation. (Any #dceduc332 students around?)
Good evening, everyone. Dan Butler, principal of #eesbobcats in the Western Dubuque School District. Excited to connect with and moderate the conversation tonight. #iaedchat
Good evening! Meghan Blakey, elementary school counselor in Klein, TX- I’m joining tonight while also watching my hometown Stros play Boston in the ALCS! #iaedchat
A1: Personal and authentic is all about "real" learning. Can I take what I have learned and put it in action? Is it going to help me move my practice forward? Is it going to help me better serve the students, staff, & community? #iaedchat
A1: Personal and authentic learning to me means that it is learning that is relevant, realistic and applicable to the job/role that you fill at any given time. #iaedchat
A1- personal learning means that the learner is gaining something from the teaching or material. When the learner is invested, then personal & authentic learning are occurring #iaedchat
A1 building a PLN and exploring new options, techniques and strategies. Research what others are talking about. Go observe other teachers and visit other schools. Follow your passions #iaedchat
A1: Authentic learning is deep, real learning that has value beyond school. Often, this kind of learning is going to have a personal connection for learners as they make sense of their world. #iaedchat
A1: To me, it means that the learning is relevant and aligns to goals and passions. It means that I can apply it in a real context and create something new or contribute to improving our world. #iaedchat
A1: I’m not sure that all authentic learning has to be deeply personal. Not disagreeing with the way this is framed…just thinking here. Can you help me think of examples where learning might be authentic but not personal? #iaedchat
A1: Authentic means any time as well to me. Learning from situations and teachable moments. They are everywhere and we must keep our eyes open. #iaedchat
A1. Personalized or authenthenic learning is when Ss are in control of their own learning, at the rate they need to learn, as many times as needed, PBL, flipped classroom learning, digital learning, research, etc. #iaedchat
I like that phrase, “Real problems, real solutions.” One of my colleagues often talks about “real work, for real people, that really matters.” Same sort of idea, I think. #iaedchat
A1: Authentic learning is leading by example for not only my students, but my family/friends to follow passions. Education doesn’t just happen in school. Our curiosities drive continuous improvement when intrinsically motivates. #iaedchat
Yes! If we fail to involve student passion, we have missed a monumental opportunity. If we forget our passion, we are just going through the motions. #iaedchat
A1: To me, it means that the learning is relevant and aligns to goals and passions. It means that I can apply it in a real context and create something new or contribute to improving our world. #iaedchat
A1: authentic learning for adults in schools means we do less “faking,” simulating, or pretending - for instance, more times where PLCs look at their *own* student samples, more times where modeling used worh adults is really meaningful #iaedchat
Q2: We have many people in our school settings and networks who motivate and inspire greatness within us. Who are these people and what do they do for you? #IAedChat
A2: I am inspired by my @CRSCHOOLS colleagues who work tirelessly for kids. I am thankful for our staff who ensure that kids have a safe, supportive school to come to each day. I am thankful for you, my #iaedchat pln, who always have such rich ideas to share each week.
A1 as some have said, personal/authentic learning means that is something that is applicable to me the BEST learning takes place when the input on teachers needs and issues as been addressed and included in the learning
A2: My colleagues at @DordtEDUC! We have an incredibly high-functioning team—definitely the healthiest work environment I’ve ever been blessed to be a part of. They inspire me on a daily basis. #iaedchat
Q2: We have many people in our school settings and networks who motivate and inspire greatness within us. Who are these people and what do they do for you? #IAedChat
A2 Hold me accountable for our processes and welcome my ideas. We know that greatness is achieved by layering on top of idea by idea. No egos involved or allowed. #iaedchat
A2: For me it's my teammates on the School Improvement team at #GWAEA, my friends who are educators, and those who I work with in the buildings doing the work day in and day out. Mostly, I am inspired kids, they are the reason I am in education today. #iaedchat
A2: I’m motivated by anyone who is pursuing improvement - those improving their system through researching strategies and skills, continuing their education, try something new/ be vulnerable, or just striving to build relationships and collaborate. #IAedChat
Q2: 2 ppl who inspire me are @EScott01809035 and @JanetJWats - they keep me heart-centered and focused on what’s going right. They’re always the breath of fresh air I need when I come upon bumps in the road #iaedchat

Q2: We have many people in our school settings and networks who motivate and inspire greatness within us. Who are these people and what do they do for you? #IAedChat
A2: I have been lucky to work with fellow educators who help push me to get outside of my comfort zone. Being able to then take those opportunities to @twitter PLN groups has had an invaluable impact on my growth. #IAedChat
I am motivated daily by the great staff at South Tama. I have enjoyed getting into all of the classrooms to see the student learning and all the professional conversations I have had. #iaedchat
Q2 #iaedchat There are too many people to count when I think of those who motivate me. My 1st thought is about my son who is courageous each and every day #2 Kids who come to school for safety, security and love, #3 Passionate leaders, educators & staff...too many to list!
A2: I’m motivated by anyone who is pursuing improvement - those improving their system through researching strategies and skills, continuing their education, try something new/ be vulnerable, or just striving to build relationships and collaborate. #IAedChat
A2: so many to name. The common denominator between all of them is they listen and ask questions. About passions, work, family, etc. they mentor all facets of life #iaedchat
A2 I started to name a lot of our staff but I don’t have a lot of room to do so they truly blow my mind each day with their ability to take risks and stretch themselves #iaedchat
Gotta recognize that trust is a key part of high performance. Has to be developed. I miss that from my job last year, motivates me to build same here. #IAedChat
A2: Honestly, the future teachers I am privileged to serve as instructor are also incredibly inspiring. At @DordtEDUC we have amazing educators in training! #iaedchat
Twitter & the #PLN it has introduce me to has been a career changer My daughter thinks its weird, but her Dad can thank his Twitter PLN enough #IAedChat

Based on Q2- I love that so many of you are surrounded by excellent people every day. I am glad you have these folks to enrich you! Tell a few of them tomorrow. #iaedchat
A3 Weebly, youtube, and @Newsela . Key components to my differentiation pieces. Blended learning to address one concept to all levels of learning. #IAedChat
A3: personally I love google classroom, for use w/ S’s and T’s. There’s so much flexibility in how ppl can respond to each other and complete assignments. I like that things can be done at a personalized pace & supports are accessible #iaedchat
A3: For my own learning…the combination of blogging and Twitter as a means of building a PLN over the past decade has been powerful. Having a cadre of other educators all looking to engage, share, imagine, question… #ironsharpensiron#iaedchat
A3 Digital: Google classroom @kahoot@goformative Analog: my students I try to use them as my primary resource Kids can say the darnest things to make a classroom better #iaedchat
A3: My favorite tools are those which allow me to collaborate with others--I have learned in adulthood that talking things out helps me learn a great deal more than when I think about things alone. #iaedchat
A4: There are so many platform to organize the digital content, and those platforms are what they are because of the amazing PEOPLE that share! We are one google search away from trying something new with tons of support! #iaedchat
A3: @padlet has been a key part of switching up my lectures to make them driven by students questions, comments, and wonderings. Instead of me just holding forth, we make it a conversation around the big ideas we are learning about. #iaedchat
A3: twitter twitter and twitter for me. Aware but not familiar with others and time is finite so focus on one for me. Then research articles. Twitter seems to help me navigate others and connects me. #IAedChat
A3: My favorite tools are those which allow me to collaborate with others--I have learned in adulthood that talking things out helps me learn a great deal more than when I think about things alone. #iaedchat
A3: Google for ease of sharing and basic functions, and good old paper and pencil. I blogged about this a couple of weeks ago... https://t.co/jhqYlcYxWA#iaedchat
#3 My most important digital tools are my Google Calendar, Google Sites for organization, and I just began using this "paper" organization tool that is amazing! https://t.co/KZNpRU8EZ1#iaedchat
A3: Big fan of Twitter and blogs for online resources. Love to read leadership books and learn from 1 on 1 conversations with our staff members. #iaedchat
A3: Analog tool for my own productivity: my bullet journal. Transformed the way I keep track of my busy schedule, my to-do list, my lesson planning practices, and more. #iaedchat
A3: @cultofpedagogy@TEDTalks@QualityLearning — my #PLNs here on Twitter - but it really comes down to where I can learn about the leverage I have within my system and how I can better impact those around me. #iaedchat
Q.4 - Dan, I don't know how to answer this, because I love them all. I like to read and write blogs a great deal, listen to videos, podcasts, TedTalks etc...but at the end of the day I love a book, a yellow highlighter & a group of educators learning together! #iaedchat
A4: Book. I should get into the others, but so hard to commit time to all the great resources! Can refer back to marks in books with stickies, but can also save digital links. I like to use my Google Keep to save these references. #iaedchat
A4 I love books and I feel that three books have really pushed me into a different direction. The Growth Mindset, Teach Like a Pirate and What Great Educators do Differently #iaedchat
A4 Book-Chop Wood Carry Water by @JoshuaMedcalf Video- I listen to @inkyjohnson clips most mornings to fire me up to live with purpose each day #IAedchat
A4: I try to read as much as possible, but time is difficult; videos help conceptualize bigger concepts, I want to begin to use podcasts during my drives to maximize opportunities for learning and growth. #iaedchat
A4 This book "Negotiating Science" changed how I look at teaching science Brian Hand & Jay Staker nailed it! This is when I became a science teacher #IAedChat
A4: I revisit my “Notching Up the Nurtured Heart Approach” book often- it helps me reset to what I know is best practices and being intentional about where my energy goes @CSFisGreatness#iaedchat
I use it in one of the courses I teach in the M.Ed. program at @DordtEDUC. So few students have seen it—it’s great! Kind of a classic by now, but it gets across the idea that we ALL can lead...and sometimes we lead best by following well. #iaedchat

A5: It's easy to know a lot of things at a surface level without digging deeper or connecting deeply to. The challenge becomes how we learn deeply and meaningfully rather than just reading an article, thinking "oh, that's nice," and moving along w/o impact. #iaedchat
A5 Yes I do; It is too easy to fall into digital teacher mode & overuse technology I use some, but I try to go new school & use relationship to drive collaboration & learning #IAedChat
A5: the difference between blocking access and teaching responsible usage. Digital tools are part of our world; we have to use the to positively tell our story and hold each other accountable to workplace standards. #iaedchat
A5: only concern is depending too much on digital and not engaging in conversations in real life in person. I have experienced expinentially more growth by those I work with daily and weekly than others (no offense twitter) #IAedChat
A5 not really I think the variety allows me to find what works best for me and other learners. We do need to be more diligent with so many options in the validity of the sources however #iaedchat
A5: We live in amazing time. There are so many possibilities for what can be done! We have to learn discernment, I think, about what we should use—and how it will actually impact students. (Not just their learning, but their digital footprints, relationships, etc.) #iaedchat
A5 my only concern is the ability to discern between what’s good & useful with what isn’t. With so much access we’re flooded with information- it’s not all good, helpful or best for S’s and T’s. #iaedchat
A5: It's easy to know a lot of things at a surface level without digging deeper or connecting deeply to. The challenge becomes how we learn deeply and meaningfully rather than just reading an article, thinking "oh, that's nice," and moving along w/o impact. #iaedchat
A5: The most concerning part of access to digital materials is that as adults we don't always go the extra step to ensure it's a valid/reliable source, or dig deep enough to understand. We have to be critical consumers of of info we read, share and talk about. #iaedchat
A5: I do worry about the access to technology but it’s here and it’s not going anywhere so how do we modeling balancing technology use and good ol’ conversation, collaboration, and learning without technology #iaedchat#balance
A5. Seleting what works for you! Each individual has different preferences, and styles. Where one person may be comfortable with many different types of programs, while others feel comfortable with a few! #iaedchat
A5: There are a lot of great things shared online and there is a lot of junk as well. With such easy access to a wide variety of information, we need to be mindful of what we’re viewing, sharing, and endorsing while considering the source. #iaedchat

A6: Right...As far student personalized learning- voice and choice. Embedding project and problem based learning with a focus on learner interest and passion.
Wrong...when we keep doing things the same way and go the "one-size fits all" spray and pray method. #iaedchat
A5: The most concerning part of access to digital materials is that as adults we don't always go the extra step to ensure it's a valid/reliable source, or dig deep enough to understand. We have to be critical consumers of of info we read, share and talk about. #iaedchat
A6: I can’t remember who said it, but I recently read a good one about the difference between “personal” and “personalized” learning. Not the same thing. The tech-heavy “personalization” narrative in education is dangerous, I think. #iaedchat
A6 what we are getting wrong is that the institution of education isn’t moving fast enough to make change but what we are getting right is that we are taking a more personalized approach in learning than ever before. Individualized paths in learning are in the rise #iaedchat
A6:we’re getting right that not all kids learn in the same way or at the same pace- pers. learning allows flexibility to meet each S’s need. What’s wrong is that personalization is still not the norm-it’s up to schools & T’s to figure it out if they want to implement it #iaedchat
A6 Right: The focus on collaboration, both on the T/S side & T/T side We are always #BetterTogether
Wrong: Tunnel vision, when we find a strategy we like thinking that way is the only way. Ss need Ts to use multiple approaches #IAedChat
A6: We are getting it right when we teach others to take ownership of their learning. Making learning authentic & teaching into mistakes/coaching is where the most learning happens. When we believe we are the holders of all knowledge we’re getting it wrong. #iaedchat

Gentle pushback…I’m not sure that individualization is something we should be striving for, honestly. Meeting kids where they are at? Definitely. Making a personal connection? Always! But we should still keep an eye on what is good for the group as well. #iaedchat
Q6. I am in favor of Personal/Real-Time Learning for individual learners in our schools. Gone are the days of stagnant PD sessions that teachers/staff have to attend to fill a "quota" of hours! #iaedchat
Can’t wait to co-mod #bcedchat with guest mod @LisaRead to discuss SO YOU WANT TO USE YOUR ERAC RESOURCES. Tonight, Sunday, October 14th at 7pm PST. @bcerac
A6: We are getting it right when we truly listen to the needs of our kids and adults and provide the appropriate resources. We are getting it wrong when we initiate quick fixes and one size fits all frameworks. #iaedchat
Hmmm…I’m still not convinced that personalization is a goal we should be striving towards. Personal connections? Yes! But personalization has a connotation of individualization…and I’m not sure that is in society’s best interest. (We’re all self-centered enough…) #iaedchat
A7: I am going to find a podcast that I can listen to to extend my thinking about education this week and begin to listen during my drive time. #iaedchat
A6. When we talk about the one size fits all for personalized learning, we need to consider those Ss who aren't a good fit for this type of learning, too! #iaedchat
A7: A little introspection...what do I need to "power up" in my life? Figure it out and take small steps to get it done. Get some books, find some podcasts, keep growing. #iaedchat
A7: this week I’ll be attending PD presented by one of our behavioral program T’s - this will strengthen my knowledge of how best to personalize behaviors interventions #iaedchat
A7: just finished two books, time to start more! Need to visit HS book club on Friday - blogged about that this week too! https://t.co/yyAj1YankX#iaedchat
A7: As I’m having conversations w teachers to ask how they like to learn&differentiate professional learning opportunities so they can see what it might open for students. Sometimes I think we forget to just ask, it’s a great strategy&shows you care about the learner #iaedchat
Glad you all could join us tonight for #iaedchat. Every week, I look forward to learning with some of the best educators around. Y'all are rockstars! Make your week awesome.
A7: My plan is to continue my morning routine: reading professionally for 30 minutes before my children wake up. Peaceful professional growth before 6:30 AM! #iaedchat
A7: I’m digging deeper into @DrJanrichardson Next Steps to Guided Reading & her Intervention book as I dig deeper into addressing the true needs 4 each student - not generalizations. I’m also working to create a body of evidence for each S versus relying on test scores. #iaedchat
We will be back next week with #IAedChat. Look for a podcast to be dropped within the hour recapping tonight's chat. Until the next time…Be the Change! Good night, everyone.
