Hey there everyone, thanks so much for spending your Tuesday PM with us, welcome to tonight's #ESPEchat on Self-Care! My name is Stephanie Sandino and I'll be your moderator for tonight! A couple of housekeeping points before we get started here! #physed
If this is your first time with us, be sure to check out @MrCsajko 's video that talks about the what, why, and how of Tweet Deck which will definitely help make everything run a lot smoother! https://t.co/brRqWy3gd3#ESPEchat#physed
Hey legends, Christina here from Melbourne - self care for me is critical and want to learn more. If I’m not ‘right’ then my kids will not benefit. #espechat
A0 Yo, what's going on everyone! My name is Stephanie Sandino as I mentioned, I teach ms #physed (grades 7/8) in Southern Cali. Today, I am grateful for being able to get up, do what I love, teach my ss about long jump (something I never got to do) and getting in a run! #ESPEchat
I’m grateful for a sleep in today :) Today we are celebrating Anzac Day - national holiday remembering those soldiers who fought us in the wars. I’m grateful for them #espechat
Taking time for yourself! Whether that means complete and total rest and relaxation or doing something out our your daily routine to get yourself rejuvenated again. Get the adequate amount of sleep, nutrition and exercise. Being emotionally stable! #espechat
A1) self care for me is just remembering my needs mentally and physically. I’m the only one who can care for myself now. There should be time in my day for that. #espechat
#espechat A1 self care means remembering to have a work/life balance. Practicing what I preach to students about working out, eating healthy, and spending time with people that are positive!
A1 Stephanie, that picture makes me think of people on a plane. Put your oxygen mask on 1st then help those around you. Can't help or be present if you can't breathe. #espechat#Physed
A1 Taking time for yourself! Whether that means complete and total rest and relaxation or doing something out our your daily routine to get yourself rejuvenated again. Get the adequate amount of sleep, nutrition and exercise. Being emotionally stable! #ESPECHAT
A1 Self-Care is remembering to take care of yourself first, which is hard for many of us in this community here because we always want to help our Ss, Families and Communities find your #WorkLifeAlignment#espechat
A1 putting yourself first - something I’m getting better at. If you’re too worried about others and then who’s worrying after you? Like the aeroplane rule, look after yourself then others #espechat
#espechat A1 self care means remembering to have a work/life balance. Practicing what I preach to students about working out, eating healthy, and spending time with people that are positive!
A1: loving yourself , doing your best while leaving yourself some wiggle room , being aware , trusting your gut and feriousiously believing in yourself #espechat#mentalhealthbaby
A1) Remembering not to take my work life Home, and only the positive parts of the home world to work. All of that on top of getting enough sleep during the week and sticking to a workout schedule as best as i can #ESPEchat
A1 when we get home from work we tend to focus on ‘negative’ things and whinge about it, but it’s so important for your self care to recognise what a great day it was #espechat
A2 My self-care routine consists of sleep (I haven't been doing a very good job at this one lately), exercising via @orangetheory & running, eating right to refuel, drinking H2O and writing in my reflection book after school #ESPEchat#physed
A1) Remembering not to take my work life Home, and only the positive parts of the home world to work. All of that on top of getting enough sleep during the week and sticking to a workout schedule as best as i can #ESPEchat
A2) I need to get enough sleep, go home after a long day (and be okay with leaving work behind) and take a nice walk with the family when needed! #ESPEchat
2) Routine is big - wake up 5:45 & do same things in routine. Eat health, go for runs 2-3 times a week, play with my Ss when I get a chance. But also sit down to read, do yoga w/ my wife, & relax. #ESPEchat
A2: cup of great coffee , quiet time , exercise , 8 hours of sleep , laughing , organizing, (working on this).. reaching out/asking for help/ delegating ! #espechat
A2: It’s having my reflection time before I start my day in the morning & remembering to be thankful for the opportunity to change lives each & every day, family time, as well as making time to stay active #espechat
A2: I try to spend about 15 minutes during my prep walking and listening to music or catching up on the latest reality tv episode. I color and do yoga as often as possible! Check in with friends regularly and drink tons of water!#Physed#ESPEchat
A2: Every other weekend or so- I leave town. Being away from the familiar helps me to unplug a little better. Also, I have a loving spouse that threatens me routinely if I don’t put down the phone. LOL! #ESPEChat
A2 I workout after school, most of the time I don't check school emails at home, I get plenty of sleep and I let things go that I can't control #espechat
A2 - gym in the morning, then head into work charged up. But still learning when to switch off from work after hours. Whether it be just being a potato couch or take the dogs for a walk - gotta remember my furry babies need self care too :) #espechat
A2 weekly yoga (hoping to increase frequency), listening to podcasts on my commute, we try to cook dinner every night, I def get enough sleep, trying not to stress abot the small stuff in class also helps my sanity #espechat
A2) I’m usually passing out at a decent hour to get enough sleep as coaching jobs usually get the fumes from the workday. Try to get at least 4 mornings during the week in the gym and eat healthy(-ish!) While drinking plenty of water and disconnecting as much as i can #espechat
A2 on a daily basis, I get up at 5 and workout, go to school, set up, chill, play/teach, come home take a walk then visit with my family. #espechat#Physed
Hey Guys,
Braden Verge from MA! I teach at 2 elementary schools in Salem,NH. Sorry I'm jumping in late but I just put the kids to bed! Q2) Workout at 4:30am, Jocko Podcast to and from work, Coach lax, be in the moment with my family, play #espechat
MUSIC! I have to have it during my commutes. Lately, it's been music as opposed to podcasts. It's just where I'm at right now. I do switch up with podcasts though! #ESPEchat#physed
Omg I don’t even know what google keep is ?!?!? I just like using one central planner and color coating with tabs , markers , stickers to make me feel in control and ready for the day/week/month ! It also helps me fit in self-care time , I fee less rushed etc ! #espechat
A3 When I know deep down in my heart that my plate is full & I get that inkling to say "no." I also lose my patience a bit quicker when I've reached maximum capacity, which in turn effects work life and home life. It feels as though my levels aren't syncing up! #ESPEchat#physed
My schedule is pretty booked right now with #physed, Family Life (two sports teams to take the kids to, and a few church related activities. I have to give something up to fit something in. If not, I end up getting pretty sick (like last year). #ESPEchat
#espechat a2 basketball, reading helping others eating mostly healthy talking to people who are real with me. Tickling my kids (my own not SS) music stand-up comedy
A3: geniunely interested in other people’s responses - I’m not great at saying No , therefore, responsibilities add up and brain capacity becomes full to the max . Thoughts?!? Constantly a work in progress in this area ... #espechat
Q3 #espechat No work email in the evening, limit work to one day a weekend or one late evening, learning to say no (I've been teaching for 16 years) as this is a process for me, letting things go that I can't control - someone already mentioned that!
A3cont) When I feel drained of my energy. Just today I found my energy back & it’s great cause I connect waaaay better w/ Ss. But it can come & go if I don’t get enough sleep or do something outside of routine #ESPEChat
Julie Miller, SF East Bay here. I draw the line when the demand depletes me. I have put out so much I was getting chest and stomach pains. Not good. #espechat
A3: I TRY to draw the line at being at school/ busy 7 days a week. I love my students and want to support everything they do but sometimes I have to miss a play or a game for my own sake. I also try really hard to avoid school emails after work. #ESPEchat#Physed
A3) I also lose my patience faster andget anxiety when a lot gets put on my plate. I am a "yes" man and I try to do my best to get everything done. I try to not let it interfere with my family time #ESPEchat
A3) Dialing it back when I’m feeling drained in terms of workouts and making sure i have days where i come home and do virtually nothing work related. When you’re feeling zapped, pushing it when you don’t have to usually doesn’t work out well #ESPEChat
There is also an exercise I’ve done with colorizing myself and team members and when you are out of esteem it gives you signs to look for in yourself #Espechat
A3. Find Balance in the force. One must understand important parts of life. Learn to say No to projects that don’t meet your needs or interests. #espechat
Boundaries so important to set. Highly recommended this book. Was very hard to read, but must for any teacher. "Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life" #espechathttps://t.co/MPpe8v1sMx
A3 I need to do better on drawing the line when I want to say no to doing something but I some how I say yes...But most of the time I some how get out of it because I just keep thinking that I don't want to do it #espechat
My sincere appreciation & thanks to @PHECanada for recognizing me.I am truly humbled & honoured to receive this accolade. In a larger sense, however, this honour is a byproduct of my amazing #PhysEd PLN, colleagues&supervisor @Schaef9 Thank you all! #pechat#espechat#saskedchat
Learn more about the Researcher of the Month @MrWasyliw! He has worked in a plethora of teaching environments where his research interests grew organically & have situated him within multiple research streams including community-based Indigenous research https://t.co/EdWka6zSvR
Yea, I'm working on this too. I also think is this a 100% yes, or a kind of yes, or a no. It needs to be a "heck yes" and in the right direction as far as goals are concerned #ESPEchat#physed
A4 managing self-care at home and at work is something I strive to do, it’s about trying to get into a routine, & starting small so we can begin to create those healthy habits that we preach but must also practice #espechat
A4: Not as often as I should. I often find myself going so much during the day, physically and mentally, that when I get home I completely shut down. My SO is not a huge fan when this happens! #ESPEchat
A4) Self Care at work is turning on some music while working during preps, lunch with coworkers, and also tbh, loosening the screws from a teaching perspective and either participating in an activity or being my goofy self with the kids. #ESPEChat
A4: at school self care looks a lot like trying my best, being the good , and not allowing others anxiety’s/mood/stress become own anxieties , at home it looks a lot like relaxing with my husband, eating a great healthy dinner , and enjoying the time . #espechat
A4. I guess I answered the wrong ? earlier. I take care at school my eating lunch with positive coworkers, and taking a walk at lunch. At home, I try to turn things off at 7 and focus on family, and fun. #espechat#Physed
Q4: I'm not sure I'm good at self-care in either place. My problem is that I often confuse my work with my pleasure, so I'm not sure when I'm working and when I'm just doing what I love and want to do. #espechat
A4 managing self-care at home and at work is something I strive to do, it’s about trying to get into a routine, & starting small so we can begin to create those healthy habits that we preach but must also practice #espechat
A5 Although I've helped provide some self-care in my last school site through the 100 Mile Challenge and putting @darebees posters in my teachers' boxes it would be cool to have a Self-Care Tool Kit developed by our state organization! #ESPEchat#physed
A4) Self Care at home is usually something productive (renos, yard work, gardening) that can also be relaxing (reading, having a fire, naps, naps, naps). At work, it’s taking the time to sit down. #espechat
a4 At Work I put on relaxing music between classes, eat lunch outside when I can, shoot hoops, hit the wall with my lax stick, run after school. At Home I enjoy my time with my family and be in the moment. #ESPEchat
Legends! I’ll need to stop here, as I’ll be getting ready to chat with @MrRoosPE and @PerkettPE on #letstalkphysed - then I’ll switch off for the Anzac Day footy match. Love chatting with u guys even, now I’ve met you in person :) great work team #espechat
A5: I think it's important to make sure to choose self-care sessions for state conferences. Also offering other workshops, etc. that deal with self care would be great. #espechat
A5: I think it's important to make sure to choose self-care sessions for state conferences. Also offering other workshops, etc. that deal with self care would be great. #espechat
A5) It would benefit schools to make sure we get out of work early and take care of ourselves from time to time. Staff meetings are important but it would really be cool to say hello and head home right away to do something for ourselves. #ESPEchat
A4 self care at home is making dinner, I did chores today and felt SO much better, just spending time with my spouse. Self care at work is letting go of small S behaviors that are insignificant, going for a walk and getting lunch #ESPEChat
A4 Work related self-care is stoking the fire through my sm #pln, #podcasts, connecting with my ss, writing positive parent emails, reflecting in my reflection book 1/2 #ESPEchat#physed
A5 we have designated health ambass. at each worksite in our district, & we meet w/them 4x out of the year to drive staff wellness at their campus- Softball & volleyball tournament, open gyms, boot camp, yoga, Zumba & a Fitness Challenge #HealthyStaffHealthyLearners#espechat
A5: I think it would be huge for @SHAPE_America & @IndianaSHAPE to send out weekly self care challenges. Nothing huge, something to strive for. Also a props tag on Twitter! Not about anything in particular that someone has done but simply for doing their best! #ESPEchat#Physed
I totally get you! I had to say no to something this year that made a lot of people upset. I knew if I kept it I would have had pneumonia again this year. #ESPEchat
A4 At home, it's doing physical activity with a family member, eating at the dinner table, watching a movie as a family, traveling, etc. 2/2 #ESPEchat#physed
A5) My colleagues and I have a Wellness committee and we have been providing activities and treats during and after school. Walk/running club, Adult PE, smoothie fridays, bowling, escape rooms, beverage tastings at local establishments, etc... #ESPEchat
I love the idea of a self care kit. #espechat#Physed Perhaps even something simple like allowing the staff room to look inviting and having relaxing colors not institutional. #espechat#Physed
A) I means it's not ALL about me...or is it? 🤔 Haha! Having a later start 🕐. Not feeling as if it is us against the clock. More "check instead" vs meetings #Espechat
A5 our last Superintendent asked all admin to have a special water day on Wed. He gave all employees h2o bottle to remind us to drink plenty of water. That was a step in the right direction.#espechat#Physed
A6 Kind of perfect timing for this as we are in testing season and ss are getting pulled out left and right. We talk to them how important it is to just get up and move after a long arduous period of sitting and focusing. We happen to be in our track & field 1/2 #ESPEchat#physed
A5) I means it's not ALL about me...or is it? 🤔 Haha! Having a later start 🕐. Not feeling as if it is us against the clock. More "check instead" vs meetings #Espechat
A6 we have a student school health advisory council (SSHAC) that brought mindfulness through yoga early mornings to their campus for kids given the high stress levels of EOC & AP finals #espechat
A6 season which is full of choice. So we encourage our ss to find different choices of physical activity to relieve their stress, whether that be going for a walk with their dog, a bike ride, shooting around the bball after school, etc. 2/2 #ESPEchat#physed
A6) Providing teachers with tools and resources to offer more brain boosters in the classroom, providing recess equipment (through grant writing), giving Ss the opportunity to taste test different types of food, #espechat
A6. Develop relationships with PA in the neighborhood make sure students know the resources that are around and develop places for students to express they challenges. Allow student time to grow and develop at own pace. #espechat
Great idea, use to provide brain boosts every month for my K-6 teachers. Having a hard time thinking of middle school aged appropriate brain boosts in the classroom #ESPEchat#physed
A6: I try and show up for them by providing them recess talk time and creating / showing them helpful mindfulness strategies like calming box’s and rocks !!!!!!! #espechat#advocateformentalhealth
A6 I check in with the students about what they need and am happy to break up into different groups for different activities based on their requests. #espechat
Definitely a good one, when we take some of our kids out running through the neighborhoods in Fitness Club they get to check out the playground spots as they run. Some even stop and do like a pull up or something on the structures! #ESPEchat#physed
A6 I try to bring in activities that will support student success, encourage them to drink water, and get to the small spaces of shade when the weather is hot. #physed#espechat
We are not a super big district, we have a School Health Advisory Councils & many around us also have them! We try to support one another & im a huge advocate of the #WholeSchoolWholeCommunityWholeChild framework which encompasses employee wellness #Espechat
A7: Dear future self - Remember this: You worked your butt off through many, many years of teaching and raising a family. If you want to do something completely frivolous and without much value, go right ahead. You earned it. #espechat
I definitely haven't seen it here, so it's very intriguing to me! Would love more support with a #physed curriculum coach and teacher wellness #ESPEchat#physed
A HUGE thank you to each and every one of you tonight as we delved into the topic of self-care. You all help me grow, but, most importantly, we help each other grow! Don't forget to take care of yourselves as we head into the end of the year. OVER AND OUT! #ESPEchat#physed
