#ONedchat Archive
The idea for @onedchat stemmed from a conversation between Allison Fuisz and Amy Bowker in the Spring of 2014. They noticed a gap on Twitter where an Ontario-based education chat was concerned. After several conversations and a vision in mind, @onedchat was created.

Which grade(s) do you teach?
A1: I used to play teacher when I was little, and I started tutoring at 16. I guess I was always drawn to teaching like a calling
- honour to have you Connie! - Allison
- Salut Rola! :) Always a pleasure to see you here.
A1 Teaching just seemed to follow from tutoring, giving riding lessons, etc

Q1: Share a memory that inspired you to enter the world of educating both the young and experienced at heart?
I know exactly what you mean. As if it was just part of your natural flow, almost organic
A1: I had a HS math teacher who had such patience. She understood the art of teaching. Inspired me to follow in her footsteps.
A1: MANY years ago-Judith Snow Prof "World of the Handicapped" started me on my journey into &
there was a chance to tavel to New Zealand, learn to teach and learn to surf...how could I say no
A1: the teacher sat me by a student with learning challenges & helped him through 3 grades before he went off to special supports
I so appreciate your reference to teaching as an art. I think that it is an often overlooked point
A1- Always loved organizing activities with friends &playing school. During teens tutored & organized birthday parties 4 children.
A1 I remember going camping with my gr 6 class... learned soooo much. Realized learning (& teaching) can be FUN/RELEVANT/REAL!
Because she was a great teacher or because she sparked the meaning of inclusion in education for you
A1: I've always loved working with kids. Taught Canskate and liked the smiles when they learned somethingno new.
- thanks for being here tonight Cal!
That must have been a very powerful experience to have stayed with you from such a young age
Nice to see a good number of educators out tonight! it's going to be a great season!
Those smiles can be such a magnet. It makes it worth all the challenges
Joining late. Mike from Thunder Bay.
it does. I now know it's the ah ha moment
Empowering for both the Ss w learning challenges AND yourself! Oh the power a T has to make a difference! https://t.co/vTWy7TauvP

Nice to see a good number of educators out tonight! it's going to be a great season!
A1: being part of was the most rewarding experience that helped me be where I am today.
A2: Change is a challenge because it isn’t always gradual. Sometimes it falls like a ton of bricks and can weigh you down-
CanSkate was my 1st experience with being a "teacher", too. What set me on the path to pursuing education, I'm sure.
A2: is it change that is the challenge or growing with and from the change?
A1: I think that change is uncomfortable. New. Risky. Although we expect it, we never know for sure what change will bring.
A1 : J'ai eu un prof de math HS qui avait une telle patience . Elle comprenait l'art d'enseigner . m'a inspiré à suivre ses traces
is gradual change easier?
A2: "Change" can be positive or negative; it takes energy (lots, & commitment) to make positive change (Darn you thermodynamics!)
Hey everyone, Sorry for jumping in late. My feed is filled with tweets :)
Welcome Jason! Great to have you joining in https://t.co/cY9QeLERf5
Hey everyone, Sorry for jumping in late. My feed is filled with tweets :)
right, but it's not new. The everything is in constant flux, event the education field.
- truly no late jumping in here. Buzz like a bee or flutter like a butterfly; share when/how you can :)
It depends on the change and one's pov. I think it can be okay to "rip the bandaid" but sometimes, it just stings
A2 fear of investing ones time and energy in the pendulum swing / flavour of the month. Some changes are good some are horizontal
A2: Embracing change is a mindset, and everyone is at a different point on that continuum.
A2 Tt is difficult to embrace change and not fail sometimes. It's part of the process but Ts are supposed to fail are they?
A2: Change can be risky. Trying something new means it doesn't always work. That's exciting to me & worth it, though.
agreed. so is one change easier then the other, or are they both easy?
A2- Change is a challenge, it is taking the risk of learning with the Ss and reflecting with them on the process.
A2 Change is a challenge because it is difficult and the path is unknown. BUT without change we won't grow/flourish/achieve/excel.
A2 Tt is difficult to embrace change and not fail sometimes. It's part of the process but Ts aren't supposed to fail are they?
worth the risk and reflecting about it with Ss & colleagues. What worked & did not.
A1: My parents always took the time to teach my siblings + I and we're our 1st teachers
trying to wrap my head around what makes it difficult? I think being stagnant would be much more difficult
Learning WITH students.YES! Now that takes change and a total shift in many Ts mindset about teaching! https://t.co/TFbiUvjiTI
A2- Change is a challenge, it is taking the risk of learning with the Ss and reflecting with them on the process.
- so happy you popped in Erica!
i think even when we know change is coming it can result In something new. Maybe that's the discomfort.
Yes. Great analogy with science - so true! Objects at rest tend to stay at rest until acted upon by a force....
- glad to have you here with us tonight. :)

For sure! I think it's great to model risk. Try it, reflect, refine, repeat. So important for lifelong learning!
So, is there not a resistance to change, but rather a fear of failure?
A2. I think as long you are open to change and positive influences, the change is inevitable.
A3: Open resources, shared liberally amongst teacher from around world. Student choice. Teacher choice in professional learning
A2: Si je suis comfortable, ce n'est pas bien. I need challenges to be interested. Mais, si les autres sont pas - then it's hard.
A3: Student driven learning is pretty interesting. It is full of twists and turns, difficult snags and celebratory successes
Sorry to jump in late! Cindy from Mississauga! My feed brought me in!! Thank you!
Sorry. Joining late. Trevor from Ottawa
A3: The move towards empowering student voice through inquiry and 'making', oh and global connections :) https://t.co/AUDikUzPU8
Q3: “The times they are a changin”- What are some the changes in education that interest you most?
A3: the ability to reach outsdie of your walls, connect and share globaly (on provicialy)
A3: inquiry learning, collaboration, and math. Lots of math. Love it!
A3 Changing classroom design and redefining parent communication/engagement are currently two of my passions.
A3: "Student-centred-ness" - understanding that fair is not equal and there is no such thing as average!
A3.2: Also, the growing recognition of the importance of computer science.
classroom design is so interesting, and somehting that hasn't changed significantly in a long time
Which grade do you teach? How are you teaching math? Why do you love it? Do your Ss?
