The first Twitter edchat in the Philippines, helping teachers grow their PLN, use tech in the classroom and promoting a culture of teachers helping teachers.
#edchatPH#edchatPH#edchatPH Hello. Gino here. Thanks for moderating @teacherforest. My favorite cartoon? Before it was Bart Simpson... now it's Final Space on Netflix.
I’m Alfonso from the Philippines and I will be moderating today’s #edchatph. My favorite character: Raymond Holt of Brooklyn 99 and here’s a meme for it
*crinkled up eyes from laughing* Even stevens of course just means equally. But Ray Holt is my favourite too @teacherforest Droll is brilliant fun. #edchatPH Love the show, oh and New Girl to get my fix of funny.
Thanks @Skymazef3 for reminding me about this chat. I've already missed one because I'm time-zone challenged. Justine from Auckland, New Zealand. Former teacher, now a PhD student researching gifted ed. #edchatPH
#edchatPH I've been super lucky in that I have scored a ticket to @FizzicsEd to learn more #Science for our young students in primary but overall, I am ready to go to work, just got to find a job now! Thanks for asking @ginoloko#studentlife
A1. Planning with the Ss on Google docs, etc. Learning and teaching at the same time and goes both ways. You get a deeper understanding of what they already know and can do. #edchatPH
A1 before we start a new inquiry unit. We would have round robin planning sessions. Subject specialist each give their own input on how to plan and direct the unit #edchatph
A1: Using OneNote or Dropbox as a brainstorming dumping ground can be pretty helpful. A nice place to just throw all of your ideas until you're ready to organize.
I like to gather piles of different ideas before starting to write a lesson plan. #edchatPH
#edchatph a1 With older students you can put up a big outcome and get them to work out all the ways they could get to that. Ss are often good at rubric design if you work on it together as well.
Agree! Often the Ss ideas are better too. They can let their imagination run wild and we can support them with the tools and skills they need - and content where needed. #edchatPH
It’s amazing to hear how you get students to help you plan out your lesson. It reminds me of @trev_mackenzie Dive into Inquiry and how he gets students to join in and make their learning meaningful #edchatph
Hey! First time! Jon from Irvine. A1: I actually love lesson planning so I don’t mind if it takes time, but protocol teaching has been big for me. Develop a thinking/doing routine around an essential skill and then reuse it with different content. Tweek as needed. #edchatph
a1 I use a spreadsheet with links to homework, handouts, videos, & notes. I share my spreadsheet with my students & their families so they can see what we are doing. #edchatph
Autonomy in the learning process doesn't just make your job easier either. The more the students own it, the more invested they'll be, and the better the outcome will be #edchatPH
A1: Think big picture. Focus on the big questions and conceptual understandings over the course of a unit and how you will assess these understandings. Also: less you and more learning through doing (i.e. minilesson). Have a demo notebook for conferring. #edchatph
#edchatPH this mindset at the heart of planning with (rather than just for) students is really helpful. If we are going to design and create a science experiment, then we as a group need to discuss aspects of it and pull it together
Thanks for sketch @trev_mackenzie#studentlife
A1. Keep some consistency in the way lessons are constructed so the students can make connections easily without full explanations every time #edchatPH
I have made my students design rubrics for our performance assessments. If they design it based on standards then they see the connection. Also give them choices as to the assessments they can take. Choose your own adventure! #edchatPH#studentchoice
Having everyone on the same page helps so much. You can get so much more out of face-to-face time if they know at least part of the plan ahead of time. #edchatPH
It really is a special place! There is nowhere like it. We are about to start our fourth year here, and we adore it. I hope you make it here to teach one day! #edchatph
That will be a change! I'll be in Qingdao consulting at a school in the fall. It will be my first time to the mainland (only been to Hong Kong before); I'm looking forward to it! #edchatph
Definitely! Planning less for the given time builds a structure that promotes more exploration which is where some of the best learning comes from! #edchatPH
A1 for our student lead conference I had students design a one-point rubric of how a student portfolio and student led conference should look like. #edchatph
Good ideas. The big picture may be lost in daily planning. The focus should be on the unit. And more time looking at the process of learning and connecting more than the details in the written plan. #edchatPH
Q2 As teachers, we know that not everything in our plan is followed. What are some hacks you’ve used to still make your lesson meet its objective? #edchatph
It can definitely help in keeping the right focus. Consistency kind of has a negative connotation to it bc it sounds boring, but you can absolutely be consistently fun! #edchatPH

A2 I love it when my plan gets redirected by S input. It means it is a result of collaboration and sharing of ideas with other learners in the room. Then I learn from them as well. #edchatPH I reflect and modify the plan.
A2 student directed learning ensures that our lessons become meaningful and significant for them. It’s good to let students lead you off the beaten path so long as you know when to stop and direct them back. Analogy galore! #edchatph
A2: Focus on the key questions you are exploring. This keeps things flexible. If the obj. is to determine theme, your ? might be: How do writers show us themes in their stories? Ss might take a different path than you thought in exploring the ?, but the obj. is reached. #edchatph

Always happy to talk about international teaching (and any teaching)! It made a world of difference for me. I talk about my journey a bit in this podcast: https://t.co/wKEnKoHWzl 💗 #edchatPH
A2: I like to write lesson plans to only use about 2/3 of the allotted time. Often times, things aren't followed in lesson plans or they're skimmed through quickly bc we plan too much.
It kinda goes relates to what @Mrs_Gilchrist said for Q1. #edchatph

A2. If it's not working then we discuss as learners what needs to change or be improved. Keeping it constantly adaptable keeps the learning real and relevant. #edchatPH
Flexibility is key. Get them warmed up with a few intriguing ?s and let them run with it.
Intervene if they get too far off the path, but otherwise encourage them to explore the topic. #edchatPH
A2: Simplify your objectives so that you can extemporize without compromising key learning. Written reflections can easily become group discussions. Student class presentations can morph into gallery walk “poster presentations.” Don’t lose sight of the target! #edchatph
A3: Give students choices, allow the kids to take on real world problems, and be vulnerable in the classroom. When we come in as experts it creates an uneven relationship from the start. Remind your students constantly that we are people too and we're still learning. #edchatPH
A3: We are teaching learners, not units/lessons. Don't allow it to become a mindless march through planned lessons. Be responsive to your learners and take cues for next steps from them. For more: https://t.co/hV9Y5NScsk#edchatph
A3: I use Google Slides to make my agendas, that way I can always reference them the next year when I am lesson planning. By looking at the individual lessons and the unit’s lessons in succession, I can see how I can plan better this year. #edchatph
A3. Always connect to experiences that are real and relevant. If you haven't got a clear 'why' for learning or teaching something - and the Ss can't articulate it either, then look at why you're learning/doing it. #edchatPH
#edchatPH a2 If I was solo planning, I would still never put up one objective as that leaves only one road to follow. I like to put up 3 with the thought that one is a revisit, and objectives tend to be skill not content based.
A3: Always design your lessons around the students. Illicit their input and USE IT! No one knows their needs better than them.
The ultimate goal should be to get to the point where you give the objectives and they teach the class for you with their inquisitive minds #edchatph

A3 Always remember the assessments and plan for Ss success. Think how Ss will learn more than how you will teach. Lastly, plan for the Unit, the big ideas. #edchatPH
#edchatPH a3 @chris_kittredge pointed out he only 2/3 fills his lesson plans. That leaves room for play. My ss would do all sorts of drudgery but then the play is what locked learning into their brains. Bandura got play was for adults too. Play is subjective, but never frivolous.
