#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
Welcome to #personalizedPD! So glad you could make it this evening. Take a moment to intro yourself, your role in edu, where you're from and fave holiday treat!
Evening #personalizedPD ! Kimberly, K-5 Reading specialist from north TX, and I love Chex mix, otherwise known as Texas trash in my Mom's house! She only makes it during the holidays!
Hiya #personalizedPD I'm Jason your host for the chat. Helping moderator @Owl_b_TorresEdu My favorite holiday treat is my Mom's potato salad & ham roll ups! Yum!
A1 Our district requires 4 hours of Tech PD in house and they have been soliciting Ts to share what they know in self-selected PD classes. #personalizedPD
Oh golly. An old-timer used to bring 'good eggnog' to the staff Christmas party. Had to drink it in a shot glass it was so strong. Yikes! :) #personalizedPD
Had enough of your actual family?! Join the #personalizedPD family right now for a quick chat on how to get and give the gift of PD that educators actually want!
A1 We had some required trainings, we have had some choices in other PD days, choose a session, lead a session, but we are working thru some new gradebook systems and other initiatives too #personalizedpd
A1 Our district is doing a 👍 job giving Ts choice. T’s can sign up for PD throughout the year and our full-day PDs are run like a conference where Ts pick their sessions. We had some Action Research as well but interest is waning-trying to keep it going! #personalizedPD
A1: Last year we had a district teacher led learning academy to use prof days, and feedback was great it continued and expanded. This year, they started choice for non-mandatory and it has been a huge success. #personalizedPD
I’m a little late to the party but I’m gonna jump right in! A1: for GT update hours, we tried to build in more choice by offering book studies and online options. #personalizedPD
Sounds good. A lot of talent and experience is under-utilized in-house. Should pay for their experience too. Not just the folks from far away. #personalizedPD
A2: "reluctant admins" usually don't want "chaos." Every educator has the same goal in the Professionally Driven model: Positive Effects on Learner Outcomes. Doesn't every educator want this? #personalizedPD
A2 share experiences, I have invited some Ts to edcamps, get a conversation going, find something that the T is looking to try, interested in and suggest a way to learn more about it #personalizedpd
For the Twitter chat session, we continued our conversation as a slow chat for the rest of the week. Each PD is followed up with a survey. #personalizedPD
A2: It’s hard, but I think if you offer choice and benefits, something will appeal to educators. Also- allowing those educators to present their craft can bring them aboard. #personalizedPD
A2: Our monthly faculty meetings are actually PD sessions with multiple options. All Ts choose on the spot. This culture promotes the likelihood of them seeking further options even more personalized to them. #PersonalizedPD
A1: I believe wholeheartedly and offer personalized PD for Ts on my campus and have begun collaborating with another Principal in my district. We do a gamified PD type of approach! #personalizedPD
They aren’t unsupportive, we are just such a large district that they dont know the extent of this work. Hoping to share soon with some data! #personalizedpd
A2: I think fiscally could be a good approach. PD led by faculty who are experts can save money plus it builds relationships and utilizes our OWN talented peeps. More buy-in, too. #personalizedPD
"reluctant" ones need time to see that TIME is actually be promised and supported. They also need to here from others who have completed their learning journeys. This innately gives permission for others to do the same. #personalizedPD

A2: The PD has to be seen as a relevant opportunity for growth or as realistic information/tools that can be brought back to the classroom and used effectively with the student population. #personalizedPD
A2 I agree w/lots I’ve heard. I think helping Ts learn to take risks and really gain an actionable growth mindset. Many are so used to “sit & get” they don’t know how to take the steering wheel to drive their own learning-they just need some “driver’s ed”!#personalizedPD
My response to consistent encouragement from my co-worker was "I don't need another username and password to remember!" . Her gentle, consistent nudge and sharing what she learned helped. Once I participated in a twitterchat, I was hooked! #personalizedPD
For me, I think it was inevitable that I would join. I'm a member of so many ed groups in FB. But the selling point was a random workshop at the ISTE conference back in 2012. I love it then, but it had been on the backburner until recently. #personalizedPD
A3: I'm biased, but Professionally Driven offers the Why and How to setting up an effective #personalizedPD model in your district. -> https://t.co/M2umJEr8UG
We use walkthrough data and observations to drive the monthly sessions. Our district subject area specialists will come out and offer PD on whatever we need. Ts are more likely to step up and share in this setup. #personalizedpd

Keep the questions simple and fun until everyone gets comfortable with the format. Some of the ?s I used asked for participants to choose btwn 2 items and compare their choice to education. Ex: coffee or soda? How does it relate to education? #personalizedPD

A bit of a twist, but reading Smart Talk by Lou Tice really helped expand my thoughts of what I could achieve as a teacher. It's not a book for teachers, but it helps you realize what mental blocks you have that keep you from trying new/different things. #personalizedpd
A4 Learning more about coding, working with Spheros and Ozobots, creating digital breakouts, VR, sketchnoting and more about Google Classroom #personalizedpd
A1 Depends on the building. HS is doing edcamp style learning every other week, but it is a little bit of a free for all and needs more structure/support. I'm not aware of a lot of choice at the other schools. Two opposite sides of the continuum. #personalizedPD
A1 Our district no longer mandates so many hours for this or that in exchange for time off. Now, people go to training because they want to be there. #personalizedPD
A2 Connect with what they want to learn or do rather professionally or personally and go from there. Make connections with what they want with what students need. #personalizedPD
It's time for the #Lurker shoutout!
We love our lurkers at #personalizedPD
You can be front and center in the chat. We would love for you share your ideas. If you are more comfortable watching from the back, that's fine.
Join in, or not, it's cool.
Q5: #GameofStories was developed to encourage educators to learn from each other. Tell me other ways that educators are learning from each other. #personalizedPD
Please share a link. I want to Yoda-fy my voice for @kennybosch who is watching Star Wars right now w/ 20 family members. What about the #personalizedPD family Bosch? Important too are we.

A2) I'd like to do a book study with @jbormann3 Professionally Driven book, but we have a common mindset of we-can't-take-on-one-more-thing. We need to get over that hurdle and understand that everyone is under the same pressures and are still moving forward. #personalizedpd
A5 Kicking off a district podcast this spring to help teachers learn from each other. Excited! I also ask teachers to present as often as possible. It's great to collab with teachers from across the district. #personalizedPD
Q5: #GameofStories was developed to encourage educators to learn from each other. Tell me other ways that educators are learning from each other. #personalizedPD
A5: Talking at recess, texting and tweeting book recs and ideas, learning walks, Twitter. I learn so much from other coaches about how to do my job better. #personalizedPD
A5: Twitter, for sure. I wish there were more opportunities for EdCamps in our area. I am also wanting to learn more about using Voxer to grow myself. #personalizedPD
And the big misconception is that the Professionally Driven model is "another-thing." It's a model that focus on current things and how to make them better. #personalizedPD
Where I live (Atl), there is a huge hub of meet-ups for people who code. Beginners to advanced. I've always wanted to go, but never had the time. #personalizedPD

A4 Hi #personalizedPD. I am very much looking into improving my Gamified classroom. Constantly learning and tweaking. Looking into improving my use of DOK and inquiry based projects.
We win! We win! Learning wins! Teachers win! Students definitely win! Everybody moving forward because of autonomy, mastery, and purpose. Professionally Driven wins! Great work Knikole. #personalizedPD
A4 Trying to build engagement not only with Ss but ALSO with Ts. Knowledge is SO important but it can all be lost without community. Feel like I’m channeling Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.” #personalizedPD
They are the best! School culture was our priority this year and we have truly shifted beyond my wildest dreams. Such committed educators! #ownyourimpact#personalizedpd
It will be our first. I'm a blended learning specialist working with 7 campuses. I want them to hear about the awesomeness I see daily and make connections with each other. Hoping to spark this with short podcast segments. #personalizedPD
A6 Started a blog this year, but have been horrible at keeping it up! Totally not consistent. Have a journal that I need to write in daily, but life gets in the way. Need to make it a priority! #personalizedPD
A6 over the last year I
Have been blogging about my game inspired classroom. It has turned oit to be one of the most important pieces of my reflective practice. Here's a link #personalizedPDhttps://t.co/N7olNPiakZ

A6: I am starting my blog and it is set to publish January 1st. Was encouraged by @Owl_b_TorresEdu to reflect more on my practice and growth. #personalizedPD
Q5 We have many edus who have taken on Twitter, some of them by storm. Also, our teachers are active in PLCs and when the edcamp style learning is used correctly, there is amazing stuff that is shared there as well. #personalizedpd
I like what @mrmatera and @HeckAwesome do with their YouTube channels and might be an interesting model. Short 5-10 segments made for a planning period. #personalizedPD
I can't find my "groove" with blogging. I need to do it more, but I don't want it to feel like work. I want it to be fun and reflective. #personalizedPD
This is my 2nd year as principal. I hired with #growthmindset as a goal, hand delivered back to school boxes to Ts homes over summer, brought a group together to revamp our mission/vision, give Ts Voice as often as possible while celebrating them just as much. #personalizedpd
Way behind in the #personalizedPD chat, but love the reference to "Game of Stories" Such a super fun & engaging learning/sharing experience. 15% off right now in December! https://t.co/KAd587v1s3

A6 I’m very lucky to work with many amazing #MelrosePS Ts who help me reflect & learn every day! (& every day I realize just how much I need to still learn!) #personalizedPD
I write most of my blog posts on my cell using the wordpress app while my boys get to sleep. Something about thumb typing makes me think before I write but not go back to make huge edits. Much more intentional stream of thought #personalizedPD
A7 Be more consistent, when I start learning something new, don't give up, definitely need to focus, right now, trying to connect a Chromebook to my printer, #thestruggleisreal#personalizedpd
A6) Quiet moments in my office after everyone else has left, but mostly my blog. It helps me get my thoughts straight and make headspace for other things that are going on. #personalizedpd

A7: A new coding chat for newbies and veterans! Love love love this idea. I’m also going to begin podcasting this year. Super excited for that. #personalizedPD

A7 I need to set aside time to read each and every single day. It's my happy time to reflect, grow, and relax. Even if I can only squeeze in 20 minutes a day, I need it daily. #personalizedPD
A7 This year my #oneword2017 was #REACH . I have reached beyond my comfort zone to share my learning w/ others. I resolve to continue sharing in 2018. #personalizedPD
A7: Oops. Guess I pre-empted my own answer. Blog. Blog dammit. Hey Bretzmann: Blog! Just do it. Stop what you're doing and share what you did. It might help somebody. You wanna' help doncha? Then blog. #blognow#personalizedPD
A7: READ!!! Then reflect and QUESTION. I want to work on my OWN questioning and inquiry skills concerning what campus leadership is, how to be a stronger leader, and more! #personalizedPD
I love @Pinterest for ideas when I can't think of what to draw. I recently purchased a Bible with space for sketching too. I've only been doing it a year, and it's fun! #personalizedPD
A7 My difficulty is that there is SO much out there! I want to continue to seek out new ideas but need to do it a more systematic, productive way. No more half-read books! #personalizedPD
Thanks! I'm in my final semester for it at UGA. I've enjoyed it a lot so far using mostly Storyline Articulate for my projects. I've always enjoyed creating and teaching. Seemed like an obvious path to take. :) #PersonalizedPD
I've found that I do my best work where these two worlds collide. My youngest two are really into making. My youngest son is exploring coding. My oldest is a gamer who lives and breaths social media. I can learn and explore with them. Winning! #personalizedPD
Have been sporadically playing with it for a year and a half. Even introduced it briefly to my 3-5th graders. #sketchnoting#personalizedPD Great for reflection, review.
