#PrimaryRocks#ASEchat#twinklteach Most successful ever, using water densities and food colouring to make a rainbow in a cup. This year so far floating a paper clip using surface tension
#PrimaryRocks#ASEchat dissecting lambs hearts with year 6 with the lead ofsted inspector watching and last week making dichotomous keys with haribo sweets

My most successful science lesson would have to be using online weather simulations to teach preschoolers about the different types of weather patterns.
Investigations linked to light: we looked at how shadows change depending on distance from the light source and used prisms to explore refraction #PrimaryRocks#ASEchat
#primaryrocks
Today's science lesson: these eggs will stay in vinegar, water, squash, coffee & coke for a week.
Success: the box has a lid.
They stink!
Mr Beetroot, you stole one of my answers 😂
A1: I also had a range of instruments and investigated pitch.
That lesson and an investigation on which materials to use to muffle and block out sound.

According to my parents it was the only book I would read for about a year - read it every night apparently, can still quote huge chunks of it #TwinklTeach#ASEChat#PrimaryRocks

Teaching the life cycle of a plant by having the children plant their own seeds and watching them grow, then discussingeach stage. This lesson was successful becausethe students got to see the plant go through the life cycle, not just listening #TwinklTeach#ASEChat#PrimaryRocks
A1: Developing new species of plants and animals using the knowledge developed throughout the unit to create Planet Earth scripts. #PrimaryRocks#ukedchat#ASEChat
tried floating razor blades and/or silver foil too? Difficult idea to get across floating and sinking when complicated by surface tension! #ASEChat#promaryrocks#twinklTeach

A simple bicarb/vinegar expt to explore chemical reactions - kids remember key points of a chem reaction. Making lava lamps/volcanos - kids remember the activity (which is great fun) but not necessarily the concepts #TwinklTeach#ASEChat#PrimaryRocks
@aseschat@twinkleresources#asechat
We used a website : https://t.co/wmkj6DgI0m
that allows the preschoolers to change the weather in the background and see what it will look like! Then we talked about the sepcifics of each weater type!
I always think an initial wow/hook can be great but make sure learning is accomplished after that and make sure that ‘wow’ is entirely relevant and memorable for the right reasons! #asechat#Primaryrocks
Times Atlas and The Map that changed the world by Simon Winchester - geology and Maps ( not officially a teacher but do take workshops in schools for Cartographic Skills) #PrimaryRocks#ASEchat#twinklTeach
Anybody else marking @AQA new Chemistry Specimen Paper 1 and can confirm typo in MS for Q7-3? I'm 60 papers in and don't trust my brain... #asechat#sciencesquad
I find they still focus on the WOW (and remember that years down the line) rather than the what and why of the science concepts. #TwinklTeach#ASEChat#PrimaryRocks
@twinklresources A good example of an excellent lesson without a practical. I like practicals but think we shouldn't see them as greater then everything else.

Something In order to deliver great science lessons it could help to make the lesson relevant to the students! Bring in some common/personal interests of the students as well as things happening in their world today! @aseschat#asechat#twinklteach#PrimaryRocks
A2: I believe that science should be more hands on and have more labs, the students learn better through hearing the teacher lecture and then being able to do it themselves after. #ASEChat#PrimaryRocks#twinklTeach
Q2 i'm very lucky as my school has a specialist Science teacher (me!) and classroom, which gives children the time, space, and resources to experience lots of practical and experimental Science #PrimaryRocks#ASEchat#twinklTeach
Thank you very much! The evolution unit has been incredible. We have considered inheritance using Mr. Men and Little Miss; developed understanding of adaptation by studying Darwin and his finches; compared creationism and evolution amongst so much besides. #PrimaryRocks#ASEChat

It is what you have used but on a larger scale. We did it once with a LOT of cornflour/cornstarch and water. Silly putty, quicksand etc. are non-newtonian fluids too.
The Americans call it 'oobleck' after a substance in a Dr. Suess book.
#PrimaryRocks#ASEchat
A lot of primary science is 'kitchen science' and can be done with almost no resources. There are bits of kit it's nice to have though and they do make a difference.#TwinklTeach#ASEChat#PrimaryRocks
We focus on children asking their own questions every lesson, which we call #WeHonestlyWonder. We have science ambassadors and award scientists of the month. After Christmas we are opening our own Science Lab! #PrimaryRocks#Asechat
Answer Q2: I’ve rescheduled my science to the one day per week that I get an adult classroom helper. They’re a parent volunteer and indispensible for distributing resources and crowd control. Lucky to have her and flexibility with my timetable

Have been fortunate this year to get support from local secondaries (ideas for planning, resources). Lack of resources is the main issue for us- books to support planning and resources to use for investigations #PrimaryRocks#ASEchat#twinklTeach
Started my own ks2 messy science club: making children more inquisitive , learning about variables and simply loving science! All asking for science kits for xmas! #primary rocks #twinklteach#ASEchat
I’m a big advocate of linking into stuff kids are in to. I think the @BLOODHOUND_SSC project is great for this. It was great when Tim Peake was on the space station too. #PrimaryRocks#ASEChat
A2: RESOURCES and CPD. Science is taught so poorly due to a lack of understanding and it can take a long time to ensure that your knowledge is of a high-quality so CPD is vital. Similarly, a lack of quality resources can really prohibit effective learning. #PrimaryRocks#ASEChat

**differently 🤣 Yeah, a great clip to show students. We tried it out in class on a smaller scale with a large tray and lots of cornflour... great and messy feet fun!
This is exactly how I feel! I would feel so much more confident planning and delivering good science lessons if i knew there were enough *insert science equipment here* in the cupboard. It's a real issue in so many schools that I've been in. #primaryrocks#asechat#twinklteach
Would like to work closer with the local secondary school. They have more expertise and better equipment. Also, having more time to dedicate to science would be helpful. #PrimaryRocks#ASEchat#twinklTeach

CPD doesn't have to mean a formal event or course - professional dialogue and reflection is key. An article can prompt good PD e.g one from @theASE Primary Science member mag/Journal #ASEchat#PrimaryRocks#TwinklTeach
Very lucky to have an immersion room- with temp. control and smells- been great for teaching space this term, especially night and day and watching NASA videos, children creating own ppts now #primaryRocks#twinklteach#ASEchat
For me, having subject knowledge for the new curriculum has been the toughest for me to get my head round. I honestly don’t feel i know enough. #PrimaryRocks#ASEchat#twinklTeach
#asechat serious apologies guys - really really wanted to contribute tonight but on awful WiFi connection in caravan on Kent coast!!!!! Hope you all have good chat - will try and catch up on storify
Secondary schools do not have more expertise in primary science - primary's can often down play their expertise and build up that of secondary. Need to recognise the strength of each and collaborate. Secondary involvement isn't a magic bullet. #ASEchat#PrimaryRocks#twinklTeach
This is what you need to petition SLT to get Governors to look at (or talk to Governors directly) as they can consider science as part of financial planning #ASEchat#PrimaryRocks#twinklTeach

I love my digital microscopes - absolutely stunning. And yogurt pots - not much primary science you can't do in a yogurt pot #TwinklTeach#ASEChat#PrimaryRocks
Data Loggers are very useful! I’ve just bought some ramps which link to a data logger so the children can measure the speed of the car. Fantastic for investigating friction #PrimaryRocks#Asechat
I would just approach secondaries- there is quite a bit of overlap in the move from KS2 to KS3 and I would be more than happy to help out primaries in whatever way I can- I’ve seen lots of good practice out there 😍😍
A great visualiser! We also use slow Mo, if the experiment is right for it, timers and apps like pages and numbers for data to be recorded onto. #primaryrocks#ASEChat#twinklTeach
Joining as a primary school might be the first step? so all your teachers can benefit. It’s hard when there are so many subjects. #ASEChat#PrimaryRocks#twinklTeachhttps://t.co/yANeWoLeM4 You could get your ££ back just by coming to conference
There is less science degree holders statistically but training to teach secondary doesn't mean they are experts in primary science/pedagogy. It is v. hard for a sci grads to pitch content to a primary level more so I think than secondary. #ASEchat#PrimaryRocks#twinklTeach
No reaction involved. All to do with the surface of the mentoes and the gas in the drink. The effect should happen for any carbonated drink. #ASEchat#PrimaryRocks#twinklTeach
A1: different colour skittle in each quadrant of a Petri dish- cover with water and see what happens. Get children to draw predictions. No photos as don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t done it!

My fav experience of working in nursery/EYFS, was when we read Aliens in Underpants Saved the World, and created alien worlds with bubble paint.
We then built tinfoil rockets and set them off with 35mm canisters, vit C tablets & water... BOOM! 🚀#PrimaryRocks#ASEchat

A3: Students can record their progress in learning by creating their own personal portfolio to save all of their work to! They can then use this down the road to review the information, and look back on their work in the future! @aseschat#ASEChat#twinklTeach#primaryrocks
We had convos about the reaction that was taking place, what they thought the bubbles were and why the lid popped off... children pick things up quickly when they take the lead

A3: I will have my students create a portfolio of what we have been doing in the class for the entire year, this will include notes, worksheets, and labs I will have the students share what they have learned in a presentation at end of the year #PrimaryRocks#ASEChat#twinklTeach
Yes, probably - I was thinking that as I was typing - can't have the discussion without the experiment but the experiment is useless without the discussion - so I hedged my bets! #PrimaryRocks#ASEchat#twinklTeach

A4: We use science books but use assessment tasks in the lesson to ensure that task are as practical as possible and the learning is captured pre and post task #PrimaryRocks#AseChat#twinklTeach
A4A variety of apps that suit the objective best like stop motion, pages, keynote, numbers, pic collage etc. The children love it. Everything is then sent to me on @Showbie#primaryrocks#asechat#twinklteach@AppleEDU
Variety as alreadymentioned. We had a webcam to record butterfly and bean growth along with children writing and measuring in their diary recordings. Linked to maths too. Class also did a David Attenborough style presentation created themselves #primaryRocks#twinklteach#ASEchat
A4: Having worked in a school where recording in science was done in big floor books through photos and speech/thought bubbles, I’ve found it hard to start working in a school where investigations are expected to be written up :( #primaryrocks#ASEchat#twinklteach
