Welcome to #3rdchat! We are talking professional development today- but before we start introduce yourself, where you are from, and your favorite "for fun" book.
Hi #3rdchat ! Donna from Texas. Right now I just started reading The Princess Academy. I enjoyed Goose Girl so I thought I would give Shannon Hale another go! I love novels for young adults!
Hey #3rdchat people! Ashleigh from Kansas! I JUST finished the book Thunderhead (the 2nd book in Scythe series)... and I am OBSESSED with it! I don't want to wait for the 3rd book to come out! I just started reading Refugee... and its great so far! #3rdchat
First, we will be looking at different professional learning books that strengthen us as teachers, strengthen the way we teach, and the way we handle various behaviors. Question 1 is coming up in three minutes! #3rdchat
It is hard to find the time isn't it. I know you have a new little one at home now too. The fact you are still standing at the end of the day is an accomplishment! #3rdchat
Hey there! Tracy from Clayton, NC. I’ve been reading some MG/YA lit. Refugee & Insignificant Life of a Cactus were a couple of awesome recent reads #3rdchat
Hi I'm Sara from Missoula, MT! My favorite book to read to my 3rd graders is The One and Only Ivan. #3rdchat My favorite book that I've read lately is A Gentleman in Moscow.
It is hard to find the time isn't it. I know you have a new little one at home now too. The fact you are still standing at the end of the day is an accomplishment! #3rdchat
A1: The book that had the most impact on me as a teacher this year was #shiftthis by @JoyKirr I loved the approach to making small shift for big impact. It changed by mindset this year. #3rdchat
Kirsten Murphy, K-4 elementary school librarian in Fort Worth, TX and my favorite books list is huge, so tonight I’ll say Wish by @barbaraoconnor#3rdchat
A1: As a staff, we have been reading Start Right Now. It's been edifying and challenging all at the same time. I love the way it makes me think about maintaining out of the box, risk-taking chances for my students. #3rdchat
A1. I'm currently going through (slowly) Teach Like a Pirate. The #tlap chat is inspiring so figured I'd dig deep into the book to push how I relate with and to students. #3rdchat
A1 Currently reading Being the Change, I like the way the author has given insight, perspective, ideas, lessons & extensions to bring the social instruction that seems to be missing. But, we as teachers are bringing. #3rdchat
I absolutely loved it.. and I follow them on their social media accounts and I feel like their personalities really shines through on the book... an easy read! #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A1: Feedback that Moves Writers Forward by Patty @pmgmcgee has been brilliant for teaching writing. Learn Like a Pirate by @PaulSolarz inspires me every day on how to have a student-centered class. #3rdchat
The book DIY Literacy by @teachkate and @MaggieBRoberts helped me think through how I was providing opportunities for students to anchor their learning. I still need work in this area and I plan to revisit this book again this summer. #3rdchat
A2: I have loved the Reading Strategies book...it has been a GREAT help especially in small group. I also really loved #TeachLikeaPirate and #thewildcard ... #3rdchat
A1 Crisscross Applesauce and Shut the Hell Up: 10 Reflective Lessons for New and Seasoned Teachers "How can I further develop my teaching style to rediscover the fun in teaching?” @fourmonkeypresshttps://t.co/7jHKsYkGtz#3rdchat
A2: I have loved the Reading Strategies book...it has been a GREAT help especially in small group. I also really loved #TeachLikeaPirate and #thewildcard ... #3rdchat
A2: Children's Mathmatics: Cognitively Guided Instruction challenged me to stretch myself in teaching math. I love how it allows students to reason with their thinking and to attempt the strategies that best suit them. #3rdchat
Absolutely! The books are pricey- but they are worth every penny! I think I’m going to take mine to an office supply store this year and have them spiral bind it so it’s easy to flip through! #3rdchat
A1: In Defense of Read-Aloud by Stephen Layne. EVERYONE needs to read this, especially as I hear more and more that people don’t have time to read-aloud. It’s too important to be negotiable. #3rdchat
A1 My union often publishes fantastic articles that are a bit more bite sized. Often these articles are a catalyst for change or inspiration for me. @albertateachers#3rdchat
Q3: Focusing on student behaviors, is there a book you've read that has strengthened how you've handled the various student behaviors you see year to year? #3rdchat
Years ago these books changed me, and have stuck with me. Mosaic of Thought, Reading with Meaning and Strategies that work. It is my anchor in literacy. #3rdchat
A3: I have LOVED the book Help for Billy- it has really helped me to see children and their behaviors differently... and definitely with a lot more compassion! #3rdchat
A3: The book Choice Words by Peter Johnson. I had to pull it back out this week. I believe that the language I use in class has a huge impact on student behavior. I am not sure if I am the ONLY educator who finds themselves grumpy at times, but I needed a reminder.
#3rdchat
A3: I just finished Culturize and I really think it is changing the way I look at student behavior and my reaction and relationships with students. It's excellent. #3rdchat
And for elementary kids, your read-aloud time also models fluent reading, expressive reading, and pacing that you can naturally do but they are still developing. We are striving to end robot reading! 😉 #3rdchat
A2: The Book Whisperer is one I pick up and reread every single summer! I adore the message and how it has changed ME! I can’t wait to meet @donalynbooks this summer @nErDCampKS 📖📚😍 #3rdchat
A4: I love LOVE love A Pocketful of Primary's vlog ! I am interested on finding more vlogs and podcasts- so I am excited to hear what you all listen to. #3rdchat
Ed! I’m going to have to pay you commission 😎 Hi everyone! The book is a quick, easy read to help you reflect on practices, recharge your batteries, and rekindle your ❤️ for teaching. Thanks for the support! #3rdchat
A3 Use a combination of Morning Meeting along w/ incorporating the importance of relationships from Kids Deserve It by @awelcome & @TechNinjaTodd They have all you really need. #3rdchat
You aren’t alone and I know we all wish there was an easy answer. Even if it’s just 10 minutes, or one chapter, part of a picture book, or a poem, it’s still reading-aloud and building up your community of readers! The book by Layne really is powerful. #3rdchat

A7: I can NOT wait to learn more about being trauma informed and also more about morning meetings. I feel like morning meetings has really helped to build a stronger community in my classroom and I can't wait to take it to another level! #3rdchat
A7: I feel that an area of weakness for me is my tier instructional groups. I would like to spend the summer working to make that a strength for me rather than a weakness. I also want to work on planning farther ahead than I have this year. #3rdchat
I will be looping from 2nd to 3rd. I have done that MOST of my career and it is my favorite thing to do. I did 4th to 5th, that didn't go as well. #3rdchat
Q8: Here at #3rdchat we are looking at doing a summer book study. Give us some books you are really wanting to dig into this summer and we will compile them and we will all vote on our favorites!
Some of the books I recommend for read-alouds include:Flora and Ulysses, Wonder, A Dog Called Kitty, Chicken Squad, 100% Wolf, The Mouse and the Motorcycle #3rdchat
A7. I'm slowly coming around to #gamification and want to see how/if that will fly while I have time this summer. Need to be better at conferences in rdg/writing so want to think on that too. In between the bottle feedings and diaper changes on deck this summer #3rdchat
A7 ☀️EVERY summer I take the time to organize all my experimental lessons and ideas that worked well in the previous year. This year there will be @thekidshouldsee videos put into my monthly plans and many #steam projects replacing lessons and units❤️. #3rdchat
