The #TXLchat provides a forum for Texas librarians (but not limited to Texas librarians) to create collaborative connections, share educational resources, and foster life-long learning.
A1 I think venues like Twitter, webinars and conferences TLA18 are the ways to start spreading the word and then it filters out as librarians in various districts take up the cause and share/educate. #txlchat#txASL
I plan to explore this piece by piece with our librarians, give them time to dig deep into what they mean in practice and philosophy. #txlchat#TxASL#neisdlibs
A1 Part 2 What about some sort of connection with library schools/universities? I'm guessing the new standards are on their radar but am not sure. #txlchat#txASL

D’Anne, Wylie ISD 5/6 grade school librarian here.... and I agree with this...explore over time, compare with past standards, compare with AASL. Would love access to clear documents. #txlchat

The new proposed standards are big news to us! We need time set aside to delve into the standards to interpret what they mean for our libraries and how we can be instrumental in their implementation. #txlchat
A2 Alignment with T-TESS is a change, but our district doesn’t use that for librarians. Also, I know in places we tried to shift the focus from people to programs, what the library looks like, not the librarian (safe, nurturing environment strand) #txlchat
#txlchat A2 the alignment with TTESS was done to help admin. They told us they didn’t understand our terminology. So we purposely used their vocabulary.
There are SO MANY that are not necessary any more! What is recommended split for new libraries these days? Has to be skewed Fiction and high interest NF, right?! #txlchat

Yes, visually the standards will look different. If you are already being evaluated with the T-TESS, the new standards will be easy to work with in that sense because you are already familiar with the format. #txlchat#txASL

A3 I like the metrics within the reading strand. The problem, of course, is that many admins view library standards as “nice” but certainly not mandatory. While there are phenomenal benefits to adherence, it doesn’t have “teeth” #txlchat
Q.2: They are focused on the changes our libraries are undergoing today. Digital learning, instructional technology, student driven learning. We are future-ready! #txlchat
A4 We need to inform not just students but teachers on the importance of following national and state standards on digital privacy and citizenship #txlchat#txasl

Absolutely! Our district collaboration between instructional technology and library had multiplied the effectiveness of both groups in serving students and staff! #neisdlibs#txlchat#TxASL
A3: The reading collection must be recent, relevant, and interesting! Librarians should request time with administration to explain the new reading component and the reasons why budgets would be well spent in this area. #txlchat
A4: Our students in secondary spend hours upon hours with portals to the internet in their hands with little to no supervision. Its scary! The need for effective Digital Citizenship and Digital Literacy lessons is imperative. We are the ones to deliver. #txlchat
A3 honestly I love weeding out books that have not been checked out and getting books kids want to read. Bottom line if the book is boring or outdated the kids are not going to read it. Also, add diverse books. The 400 section isn't really isnt leaving the shelf 🤓#txlchat
A5: I teach PD to each dept. monthly. I focus on a fun and effective app and turn it around to all teachers. The teachers respond very well and I plan to continue this series of PD. #txlchat
A4 digital literacy/ citizenship should be ongoing. Its not a one lesson thing that is never mentioned again. It should be a constant reminder for the kids. I also like to do mini lessons through the year and at point of need. #txlchat
@TXLA I see where Mexico’s volcano @Popocatepetl_MX erupted. Makes me think of The Warrior and the Princess by Duncan Tonatiuh. Look, the volcano has its own Twitter account #txlchat
