โChallenges to increase achievement have typically been met with more efforts to simply improve components of the instructional paradigm, rather than questioning its fundamental design.โ https://t.co/9OibXMIVfh#edreimagined#sunchat
Hey #sunchat! Aubrey, ed tech specialist in CO. On another note, I don't recommend cooking & Twitter-chatting at the same time - my result this morning is a burned thumb!
When I think about the mindset I want to develop in my students, it's not about tech. It's more about the 4 Cs - and that can be done low-tech! #sunchat
I love working with tech - but when carts are shared and you can't get them consistently, you need to get creative... I use interactive journals. Love the hands-on work. #sunchat
Jim Smith, Forest Lake MN. Great question today. I always come back to this quote from Rick Dufour. If anyone can find a way to make school work better for our economically challenged students it is the teachers. A discussion like this helps move this reality forward. #sunchat
I am weary of any instructional decision that is made for Ss based on the tech alone. One must think of pedagogical, content, AND technological concerns before creating any lesson involving #edtech#sunchathttps://t.co/dFGDy3rbvI
Best low tech tricks for me include providing my students with variety. First graders need hands on learning: Center games, Stem challenges, book clubs, readerโs theater are a few examples. #sunchat
Sometimes taking the classroom inside inspires everyone - fresh air, sitting in a circle to read or discuss, or doing math on the sidewalk with chalk. #sunchat
While staying actively involved with Ss in low tech activities like interactive journals be a champion for change and agressively lobby for the students. #sunchat
Have you tried Sketch Noting? I've really wanted to get into it with some of my teachers, but I still need a bit of unpacking for myself first. I think it's a really cool use of the "traditional" notebook in the classroom. #sunchat
I love working with tech - but when carts are shared and you can't get them consistently, you need to get creative... I use interactive journals. Love the hands-on work. #sunchat
I love using #designthinking hacks/sprints/challenges to spark curiosity & nurture creative confidence - we ideate with post it notes & markers, prototype with everyday items like cardboard, play doh,Lego, sticks - anything tactile #sunchat
...and here's something to think of---some students don't WANT to use tech. The myth that they do is right up there with the myth of the digital native. What are you using the tech to achieve? How did people achieve this before tech? #sunchat
I focus on sustainability & upcycling, โmaking a better worldโ with my makers to encourage mindful use of resources, we take apart old tech & toys and repurpose them, focus on developing consuming less mindset (helps stretch the budget too) #sunchat
I've seen colleagues use sale papers in Math to give the kids a budget and have them put together a meal for a family of 4. Adding, multiplying, great life skill. #sunchat
A lack of tech shouldn't prevent engaging in the solving of real-world problems using what's been learned in class. Instead of using #google Ss can ask each other "what do you know?" #sunchat
I introduce Ss to this in the first wk of school, we create a visual library on our windows to reference & analyse a range of sketchnote types to find our own style, builds confidence, improves key note taking & scaffolds writing too! Love it! #sunchat
No matter what we do to engage students in low resources schools, or any school for that matter we must "know thy impact". Does the engagement lead to clear and visible learning? Is learning assessed to inform student growth, and instructional effectiveness? #sunchat
absolutely, Daniel! I tell the kids our learning is 360 - we learn from each other, so share away! I always tell subject experts to jump in on discussion. #sunchat Makes them feel good, too.
Picture books with solid complications are great to begin the #designthinking process - goldilocks & the 3 bears is a classic chair design challenge of mine, using 5 different mediums to meet a chair brief - low tech/ highly creative and collaborative #sunchat
Should clarify: I'm getting my Ph.D in Curriculum and Educational Technology. I am ALL about using it....but I see it used so poorly more than in a way that enhances EDU: Kahoots are fun, but do they enhance learning, or merely make data collection easier for the T? #sunchat
My Cooperative Learning page https://t.co/ZKd9Cd6EvS highlights some engaging projects I conducted with students in my inner city school. My classes also enjoyed the weekly paper Jeopardy game to review our week's work. #sunchat
BAMMMM. This is our job. When we carry in our pocket a device that can access most of the knowledge available in the world, it shifts the way we must think about the role of school - and its about creating a culture of learning. #sunchat
This is why it drives me crazy when school districts buy these scripted edtech platforms to close achievement gaps. NOTHING beats solid instruction. Edtech can't replace it, but it sure can enhance it. #sunchat
It always concerns me when the tool takes precedence over the activity. #edtech on its own doesn't boost achievement but rather it amplifies what the teacher already does
I agree, I see it used poorly at times too. But I would also argue that there is some tech that makes teachers' lives easier that then allows them to focus on other important things, thus improving instruction. #sunchat
Don't use a template - talk through the concept, and ask them to create a visual for it. I rarely use store-bought InterActive Notebook templates. It's all colored pencils, and imagination. #sunchat Color is key! (see sample) https://t.co/w49FZQ9NH1
low tech/no tech activities and lessons should be just as engaging as those w/ tech just bc tech isn't used doesn't mean learning & creativity aren't happening! #sunchat
I introduce Ss to this in the first wk of school, we create a visual library on our windows to reference & analyse a range of sketchnote types to find our own style, builds confidence, improves key note taking & scaffolds writing too! Love it! #sunchat
No I havenโt, but I will now thanks for sharing. I love the work at the @ideo K-12 Lab & @stanforddschool Iโve learnt a lot by engaging with processes used by UX designers outside of education too - reinforces the real work application when sharing with Ss #sunchat

that would make an interesting dissertation: tracking the use of such technologies in a school and see if there is an improvement in instruction. #sunchat

Just finished reading _Teaching Minds_ by Roger Schank, which hits this nail on the head hard & repeatedly. His instructional emphasis is cognitive processes rather than subjects. #sunchat
I think we sometimes forget that many tech tools are just digital paper and pencil. Sure, they save time, but many activities can be made low-tech #sunchat
The Qs they ask right? Do I have to write in rows? Use a ruler? How many lines? Can I use different fonts? ๐ญ I love it when they realise I donโt care for any of that - as long as they can talk someone through their sketchnote #satchat writing on walls & windows elevates it too!
I agree. Trying to measure what it takes to improve instruction and doing it, using state tests has been mostly a failure. Lets look at systems like tech, collaborative planning (PLC model) and assessment practices to see if these systems are in place and functioning. #sunchat
#sunchat. Often though tech brings simple tools we have grown so used to that we may forget their wonderful ness. Spellcheck, https://t.co/NXyBD1ckeB, calculation
Think https://t.co/n8PynMiD89 Any tech should engage, enhance, extend learning. One of my fav books is Learning First, Technology Second by @lkolb#sunchat

Those are great tools - if you have access to tech, essential skills to develop. I roll my eyes when I see Ss colouring in letters and worksheets on an iPad #sunchat
Hahahaha was "deplorable" meant to be singular or plural? ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ It brings us so much joy watching you illiterates.

Hahaha. You all sound like children. This is great watching MAGA implode on itself. You deplorable deserve it. ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐. It brings me so much joy watching you all deny, deflect and whine every day.
