right?! I need a bumper sticker
-
-
-
A1. Stress can be a motivator, get stuff done early so you DON'T feel stressed out. However, it can lower your white blood cells
-
-
-
yes it definitely weakens your immune system, which is probably why I have a cold right now!
-
A1 Harmful when it interferes with daily routines / life.
-
A1. Just like a runner needs to run, you need to put yourself in stressful situations & practice dealing w/it constructively
-
A1 Stress is helpful when it motivates and creates positive change. It's harmful when it demotivates and constricts.
-
That sucks!! Are there scientifically proven ways to combat stress? (exercise, meditation?)
-
absolutely! It can be a challenge to do our job well if we are sick or strung out.
-
A1: Helpful when it brings new ideas...hindrance when it's never ending and based on compliance issues.
-
IMO harmful when it impacts the learning environment for the students
-
-

-
A1: + sometimes If lesson not going well... stress triggers reaction, shift gears - constant stress https://t.co/5vrcmEfSbk
-
I LOVE that you mentioned compliance. yes!! Bring in the WHY!!!!
-
Right. It's the constancy of stress that has negative, and sometimes, permanent repercussions. https://t.co/ddXpu3IrRC
-
-
absolutely! It can be a challenge to do our job well if we are sick or strung out.
-
is stress ever helpful ? Does it bring out the best in people ? Is it better to have pressure not stress ?
-
Eustress, the good kind of stress keeps us going and motivated! Distress is the opposite and is demotivating.
-
Which, in turn, makes us MORE stressed out (sick little twist there)
-
Ahhh compliance, the killer of all creativity.
-
yes the endless paperwork can create stress in education! Usually a result of compliance/accountability.
-
And ruiner of relationships!!!
-
A1 - helpful when it motivates and empowers you to act. Harmful when it does the opposite.
-
A1: Eustress is good when planning a project or working on an idea. Distress bad when behind on deadlines or making poor choices
-
Absolutely depends on definition.
-
Such a shame that trust in educators is no longer part of our model.
-
absolutely! Less distress in schools, more eustress!
-
Stress kills more than we know because we die a little each day.
-
-
agreed. I think sometimes stress comes from having little control or voice. For both students and teachers
-
A1 - teaching (without having support) is a HIGH stress prof. & can be very harmful to educators and its recipients
-
And a reason why so many leave the profession - not being able to manage constant stress
-
mental health does matter and in some places there is stigma toward it. V important to address mental health needs.
-
Such a great point. Our stresses can be passed onto our ss if left unchecked.
-
-
Love that you mentioned support! Lack of support is a top-cited reason for teachers leaving the procession.
-
EduStress! I think I kind of love the coined term.
-
A1 stress turned into healthy supervised frustration(with coaching to overcome it)is vital to grow https://t.co/zHxoO8Ncx7
-
and sadly not intentionally you know? It's not like we WANT to heighten those stresses on others. May Days!
-
it is TOUGH to stay supported and remain healthy while in this profession. My key motivator is my SS
-
Yes b/c I think there is a special kind of stress that goes with education that people don't really get
-
That's why we need to around # mental health in the classroom. https://t.co/sslk9dSTye
-
-
mental health does matter and in some places there is stigma toward it. V important to address mental health needs.
-
Q2 coming up in a moment!
-
Q2 coming up in a moment!
-
I often tell my SS, if it weren't for them (and the potential I see on them) I wouldn't be here.
-
really good point, some stress is necessary to create change and growth.
-
-
Definitely not. Stress brought about by pressure to succeed will inherently be passed onto ss.
-
Something I always stress w mentor teachers: how to refer Ts to pro help when needed. https://t.co/8sLdnXaw8W
-
-
And a reason why so many leave the profession - not being able to manage constant stress
-
OR therapists know how how to treat!!!
-
the students keep us connected. I like to keep a folder of nice letters of gratitude from former students
-
A2. Entirely. Any group of humans is it's own organism. The group has a voice, a mood, a personality
-
its (ug - that embarrassing moment when you misuse an apostrophe)
-
A1: Stress is helpful when it leads to rigor and growth & hurtful when it hinders growth and discourages the learner.
-
-
I always aim to be the best part of each child's day. I hope that my classroom can be a safe and positive place.
-
A2: Can make things uncomfortable. Create tension. If it is eustress it can generate great ideas or projects
-
A2 Stress in class is like slowly poisoning a well. Eventually all who drink from it get sick. https://t.co/kLTzJ1s8eF
-
A2: We forget that our ss bring their own stresses. Some traumatic. Then our stress feeds off each other. Becomes cyclical.
-
A2: stress can cause both Ss and Ts to be in fight or flight causing all kinds of chaos (emotional, physical, etc) a real mess
-
Creating a positive environment in a school or classroom actually has a huge impact on student and teacher stress.
-
stress takes innovation and creativity OUT of the classroom. Learning becomes busy-work and not inspiration...
-
You may be the only smile they see everyday. https://t.co/khp6v54j9w
-
-
I always aim to be the best part of each child's day. I hope that my classroom can be a safe and positive place.
-
Stress narrows perspective ->bad decisions, both problematic bc Ts observe and make choices- agree coach helps
-
Q2 knowing where students are at (as best we can) and having reasonable and achieve able goals is important too.
-
Stress and tension does seem to spread from person to person.
-
A2: and a frantic classroom culture benefits no one. Especially those who just need a little more time to process learning.
-
A2: Ss' stress impacts their ability to fully participate in class.
-
A2: Stress can make the culture more/less conducive to learning based on what supports are in place; if embraced, it can unify.
-
-
TED_ED: Q2 coming up in a moment!
-
A2 Teacher stress can lead to disorganization, frustration, and an overall decrease in classroom productivity and morale.
-
-
I totally agree. I realize that I have a glimmer of hope in my heart right now because I got to celebrate my SS
-
Student stress leads to lower engagement, increased misbehavior, and less overall learning.
-
Ss feel when their T is stressed. It can lead to negativity in the classroom
-
A1 When teachers join students and help them navigate the journey. Never as an excuse for bad practice. https://t.co/O8RL8qH3bt
-
Stress is often disguised in a veil of silence.
-
A2 Student stress leads to lower engagement, increased misbehavior, and less overall learning.
-
-
Many times Ss are unable to learn if primitive brain kicks in. They can be hijacked for quite a while. https://t.co/8qNyXjI3JA
-
-
A2: Ss' stress impacts their ability to fully participate in class.
-
Oftentimes students mimic the moods of their teacher, so it can have a negative impact on the classroom
-
A2: Stress due to schedule/tech/paperwork issues due to testing takes time & energy from lesson planning https://t.co/BkiIxkaMQ5
-
and WE are responsible to teach SS what they need to now for life... How effectively can we do that under stress?
-
that's true. Many people do not want to talk about mental health.
-
And these kids become adults with the same issue. Not just an edu issue, but a social one too.
-
A2: Stress is inevitable in the classroom but less negative if I model/encourage appropriate ways of dealing with it.
-
-
A2: Stress impacts classroom culture by reducing level of engagement for educator & student. https://t.co/xAO0rWK91Y
-
A2 If we break the cycle we can reduce the stress
-
Expectations of students are increasing, which is increasing their stress and anxiety.
-
A2b: Culture must be set (to some extent) prior to presence of stressors w/ plans on how to handle stress, even if informally.
-
Stress is only beneficial if schools offer structured teaching on how to deal with it.
-
A2 Packed classloads spread teachers thin, makes it tempting to answer Qs w/"BUT I JUST ANSWERED THAT Q" https://t.co/BkiIxkaMQ5
-
Ss view stress as a byproduct of and passport to adulthood.
-
I'm not sure expectations is the right word...maybe pressures on ss.
-
it decreases motivation, and therefore engagement. spot on!
-
We have a chance/choice to make when we model our responses to stress. Powerful teaching opportunity. https://t.co/3BbyMwQ8em
-
-
A2: Stress is inevitable in the classroom but less negative if I model/encourage appropriate ways of dealing with it.
-
Paperwork can create stress however, it is a necessary 'evil' ( function!) https://t.co/oNWxv2BgNH
-
-
yes the endless paperwork can create stress in education! Usually a result of compliance/accountability.
-
A2 Firstly we need to find the source of this chronic stress so we can all move on
-
A2 a focus needs to be placed on Organisational Health by leadership to minimise unnecessary stress
-
We are asking Ss to grow up faster and for what? A world that is I'll prepared so it devours it's young. https://t.co/AFKV7Mn1xC
-
-
Expectations of students are increasing, which is increasing their stress and anxiety.
-
-
-
A1 It is this is why we also need our own pursuits to maintain
-
-
absolutely! much can be done at the organizational level to deal with stress on teachers and administrators.
-
I see that, but want to make it clearer that it is eustress and not distress that we are offering. . https://t.co/rh16n8hcpn
-
-
Ss view stress as a byproduct of and passport to adulthood.
-
ugh I hate to swallow that pill. So true
-
-
with risk assessments in place to reduce stress
-
I teach dance and yoga. Let me tell you... The most rewarding thing is watching my SS find inner peace amidst chaos
-
It's compounded by living in their FOMO world. Social stress heightens the issue.
-
it's crazy how much movement and mindfulness were removed from the classroom before evidence proved it was useful
-
awesome! I am hearing more and more about the use of yoga in the classroom.
-
A3: Ss would be much happier and more engaged if movement was a part of EVERY lesson
-
A3 re: exercise take note of national health promotion initiatives e.g. promoting walking
-
-
-
so little time for peace and quiet. But it's so important!
-
-
A3: Field trips...even just out to the field to do some descriptive writing. Free writing to get ideas out.
-
-
Q3. Timers, timers, timers. was a great resource. And I didn't plan hour-long lectures. Movmeent was integrated
-
in my opinion a lot stress is due to lack of clarity that causes confusion, fear and self doubt
-
-
A3 as professionals do we need to adopt what others say? If we think it right why don’t we go with it?
-
Sometimes silent reading is their favourite English period.
-
-
-
A3 Make students think on their feet. Literally.
-
A3: Finding ways to incorporate and encourage mindfulness is one of my goals next year--important for me and Ss.
-
A3 Motion improves focus and mindfulness in the classroom. Spikes in ADD are in part due to lack of choice and movement.
-
Q3Engaged Ss are active in a wide variety of ways esp. when we watch and respond to S's, pace rich tasks but still build stamina
-
Tis true- Which frankly leads to the stress of my personal profession: Teaching something w/o needed support
-
happy teachers = happy students
-
education should be the gateway of knowledge and innovation. Yet still that gate is limited access
-
A2 that is why there needs to dialogue between all parties & risk assessments are a legal way forward
-
THAT for me is terribly stressful...
-
A3: Often called "brain breaks," we forget that kinesthetic activity benefits brains and allows them to access more oxygen.
-
There's wisdom in upgrading to standing desks. Looking to add them in to my class. https://t.co/3gfM7X3IVd
-
-
A3 Make students think on their feet. Literally.
-
a wise teacher once told me that if you use yourself all up, you have nothing left for the students. Keep yourself well
-
A3: We power pose before our assessments. And we always remember our #1 class rule: high fives > hugs. https://t.co/rR1Xq7dHgI
-
ah yes art can be incredibly de-stressing too! I have a personal goal to take an art class soon.
-
A2 A little honest talk from a stressed-out Teacher might do students a world of good. Make stress management part of the lesson!
-
Going against the grain is often stressful but isn’t it worth it in the long run?
-
oh it is SO WORTH it. Couldn't have it any other way..
-
-
A2b So many teachers, & adults in general, pretend that they're not stressed when they are. Why not tell, um, the truth?
-
my biggest Qs... How do I mobilize my future artists to maneuver the stress of following their heart in life?
-
-
-
sometimes it is more stressful to sit back and do nothing.
-
Even just a little more sunshine in their day. Not forced socialization. Just sit in the sun. Eyes closed. 10 min.
-
for me my de-stressing tool is walking & support from which includes art & drawing
-
going against the grain can be liberating. That wee rebel in my head loves that and destresses.
-
. The gain is there to challenge us to go against it! Cut away!
-
-
-
Having a non-class related honest chat (baseball in my case) works wonders https://t.co/dfDbjXKYMR
-
-
for me my de-stressing tool is walking & support from which includes art & drawing
-
When I invite guests into our school like I make them power pose too
-
-
Journal writing, group work and pbl using mixed media. I taught esl humanities but we built things for multimodal experiences
-
Organise an art show in the local community - let them take the lead Have tasks that are employment realistic
-
could work with our colleagues too. Talking about something other than work!
-
you mean model how to communicate @ and handle stress? What a fab teaching opp!
-
help students understand what the signs of stress are. Also how to manage and offload to others
-
teach them coping strategies. Make them more resilient.
-
even this chat today was invigorating and encouraging to press forth!
-
Amazing. Wonderful modeling for your Ss.
-
Q4 when you value what Ss think and feel and let them express their passions how can they not feel better?!
-
A3 In a busy world of many distractions, we can create students a space in our classrooms to disconnect & reflect & think
-
When we feel small, insignificant...TED Ed is big, with many access points.
-
. The ability to toggle between personal interest & "serious" stuff imakes Twitter grand & Much Better than LinkedIn.
-
Good idea engaging in non-school topics is worthwhile For me as my Ss are 16+ interest in their jobs is beneficial
-
Learning to overcome stress it´s a must now a days! https://t.co/BX7mB8htmG
-
-
teach them coping strategies. Make them more resilient.
-
A4: show them how you find ways to manage pressures and stress. Accessing tools and strategies. Networking. No 'man' is an island
-
Indeed always worthwhile for
-
. Yerp. I bet it could be Super Effective, if done strategically.
-
TED_ED: Wrapping up Q3, on to Q4
-
absolutely. TED-Ed lessons about stress, depression, anxiety. TED-Ed Clubs where they can explore their passion.
-
-
The world is only getting busier, so we have to prepare students for that.
-
Also closes communication gaps between students and teachers, helps to reduce breaches https://t.co/eA9Q35NuNw
-
-
Good idea engaging in non-school topics is worthwhile For me as my Ss are 16+ interest in their jobs is beneficial
-
Helps to understand how the body and mind responds to stress on a physiological level.
-
-
A4 TEDEd is...
safe,
supportive,
fearless,
engaged,
founded in creative ideas,
& community.
https://t.co/qd9LqHnA3M
-
A4: Leverage student voice & champion the respective SE needs of students publicly w/ strategic experiential responses to share.
-
and really empowering for Ss to know that their Ts/role models also feel stress
-
A3: checking in - How are the children? Or starting with free writing so it is quiet & soft music esp. after lunch.
-
sometimes it can help to learn more about stress and other social-emotional issues to know better how to deal.
-
. They need to see adults feeling it--and dealing with it in a mature way.
-
-
Relationships underpin all learning. Working through everything reduces stress.
-
-
does such a great job of elevating the voices of teachers and students! Helps to meet SE needs
-
writing can be so great especially if a child is introverted, can bring out their voice in a non-threatening way
-
A4: is full of resources that could be great convo starters in the classroom
-
A4. By demonstrating a variety of different ppl functioning with a variety of different situations.
-
I believe that if we all know each other better (ts and ss) the learning environment improves a lot!
-
-
that's a lesson we should all learn - we are ALL teachers.
-
underpinning British education
-
Absolutely. Knowing what innovations our colleagues are trying (and are working) is amazing. Connections are vital.
-
absolutely- friendships can reduce stress in the workplace and in the classroom.
-
Talking to others even thru social media is an aid to reducing stress
-
A4 and the answers can be directed here thru &
