Today our guest host is @NJohnsonABD. Join us to discuss "Which leader are you? Bolman & Deal's four-frame model for organizational leadership". For your reference, the text for this chat is: Reframing organizations: Artistry, choice, and leadership (2017). #K12Talent
Q1: Good evening and welcome! Let's begin by introducing ourselves to each other. What is your name, what district are you joining us from, and what position are you currently in? Remember to use #K12Talent in your responses as you tweet tonight. @_AASPA_
Before we move on to question 2, please take a moment to review this overview of the Four-Frame model. The four frames we will be discussing this evening are:
(1) Structural, (2) Human Resource, (3) Political, and (4) Symbolic #K12Talent@_AASPA_
Q2: According to Bolman & Deal, the structural frame/leader focuses on the structural elements in the organization, strategy, implementation, & adaptation. How are the tenets of the structural model reflected in your experiences as an organizational leader? #K12Talent@_AASPA_
Q3: The human resource leader focuses on people. This approach emphasizes support, empowerment through distributed leadership mechanisms, staff development, & responsiveness to employee needs. How does this frame connect to your experiences as a leader? #K12Talent@_AASPA_
Q4: The political leader facilitates change by dealing w/special interest groups, building power bases, coalition-building, negotiating conflicts over limited resources & creating compromises. How does this frame connect to you & your experiences as a leader? #K12Talent@_AASPA_
A3: People are the organization. To develop them to their fullest potential is what a leader grounded as a teacher does. You have to be willing to let go and trust your fellow leaders with responsibility in order to grow as an organization. #K12Talent

A2: As a district leader, this view is the 50,000 ft view of the organization - I work with the Board of Education using the structural frame. #K12Talent

Yes, @jonbartelt! Developing one's people - the human capital - is key to building trust and successfully running any organization. ๐ย #K12Talent@_AASPA_

Q5: The symbolic frame focuses on vision & inspiration. Symbolic leaders tap into employees' need to believe their work is important & meaningful. Traditions, ceremonies & rituals are highly regarded. How do these tenets connect to your leadership experiences? #K12Talent@_AASPA_
A4: This is the nature of the superintendency- advocacy through political involvement and relationships. But it can be present with local interest groups within the organization and they must be heard and followed up with as decisions are developed and proposed. #K12Talent
Q4: The political leader facilitates change by dealing w/special interest groups, building power bases, coalition-building, negotiating conflicts over limited resources & creating compromises. How does this frame connect to you & your experiences as a leader? #K12Talent@_AASPA_
A5: Sometimes you need to create new rituals, such as it was to create a more personal way to connect the Board of Education members with the community. Community forums, classroom visitations, and recognition ceremonies have helped. #K12Talent
Agreed. Members of the community - including local interest groups - play an important role in partnering with and supporting the work of the school/educational staff. Communication in this respect is definitely a 2-way street. #K12Talent@_AASPA_
Q6: Now that we have had an opportunity to discuss each of these 4 frames as separate entities, which frame or frames most closely align to your beliefs, mission, and vision as a leader? How have your views developed and/or changed over time? #K12Talent@_AASPA_
Certainly. Old rituals have their place, but new rituals provide people with the built-in opportunity to create new ways to connect and engage with other internal and external shareholders. #K12Talent@_AASPA_
A6: As a culture guy, I fit best in human resources but I believe I have to be able to adapt to each frame as the circumstances demand to best serve my district, itโs families, and their children. #K12Talent

Q7: As you reflect on these 4 frames and how they connect to your leadership style, please share an instance/example in which your commitment to 1 (or more) of these frames worked for the greater good of your org. How were you able to garner employee buy-in? #K12Talent@_AASPA_
I, too, am most aligned with the human resources frame. I have recently come to respect the inner workings (and science) of the political frame, so I now have a greater appreciation of and for those relational aspects as well. #K12Talent@_AASPA_
Q8: As you continue reflecting on these 4 frames and how they connect to your leadership style, please share an instance/example in which your commitment to 1 (or more) of these frames did NOT work. How were you able to arrive at a solution/resolution? #K12Talent@_AASPA_
A7: My work with the Board I referenced earlier combined the symbolic and political frames and allowed a greater opportunity for community members to interact with elected officials on issues important to the continued growth of children. #K12Talent

A8: In the political frame, you have to be ready to release ideas that you think are great when others think they stink. These failures help build greater understanding of who you serve and can help align you to the course of action that has a chance to succeed. #K12Talent

Combining multiple frames to better speak to and connect with the greater population at-large - all for the purpose of improving the education, growth, & development of children... Love it! #K12Talent@_AASPA_

This cannot be understated, @jonbartelt. Is it critical to find & strike a right balance between the frames, all without losing oneself in the process. #K12Talent@_AASPA_ ๐
