Yep, it's time for #Resiliencechat with me, your host, moderator, and one of a kind! Dr. Rob AKA @ResiliencyGuy@DrRobM_FSUSD "Dr. Resiliency" or just plain Rob from Northern California. Who is with us tonight?
Don't be shy all, just let us know who you are, and where you are from, and feel free to jump in. #Resiliencechat Please use #Resiliencechat in your responses so all can track.
A1) practice gratitude, keep things in perspective, look for the good in the “toughest” students, forgive, look ahead, be in the moment — mindfulness #Resiliencechat
Perhaps I'm overstating it, Rob, but for me it's superficial. And I suppose I am reacting to it because people always are saying be happy when I prefer contemplative. #resiliencechat
You are going deeper, which I believe is essential for true #happiness to occur, not just a top layer of #happy. Let's dive. Little deeper. #resiliencechat
Tonight, let's examine four areas that some researchers say are imperative for #happiness to grow: Answer about your class, school, department, home, whatever works for you. #resiliencechat
Hi! I’m late, but here!!! Q1) Find something EVERY day to smile or laugh about. You can’t help but to be happy when smiling and laughing! #Resiliencechat@ResiliencyGuy
There are circumstances I wish I could change. Like I wish that Kid O could speak for instance. I try to hold things in stride, but she can be a tough customer. #resiliencechat
A2) Graititide notebooks! Some classes get more out of these than others, the other day a student described, in great detail, how she enjoys the sound of leaves crunching beneath her feet. The whole class collectively awed at this 😊 #resiliencechat
A2 When I go out for walks, I touch trees. I don't hug them. I tough them where I perceive they prefer to be touched. Give them gratitude. #resiliencechat
A2: I think it's really important for gratitude to be verbalized, daily. I used to have a gratitude notebook, and do did my students, but we found it so much more powerful to say/hear it. #resiliencechat
Q2) Ask students and staff to slow down and be present in every moment! If you are present (not distracted by phones, etc.) you can truly focus on what is happening around you and see all the good! #Resiliencechat
For sure! In our busy quest to get things done, we sometimes forget that the reason we are doing so much is for #people. Let's be sure to be #peoplefirst#Resiliencechat
What I'm learning is that the more we stop, perceive our world, save it, appreciate it, consciously think about it, and plan my positive impact on the world, the more #happy moments come my way. #Resiliencechat
A3: I try to genuinely show gratitude for others whenever and wherever I can. I also try to provide time and opportunities for the staff at my site to do the same. #resiliencechat

A4: this discussion is validating; colleagues, understandably, question class time spent on things like mindfulness and graititide, but it is SO worth it (to start the lessson off or close down the day with) #Resiliencechat
YES #YES#Si Don't ever let anyone tell you that moments working with students as people is not important. It is imperative for their learning! #Resiliencechat

A3 When you think you might die, the little things you overlook matter more. Grateful for the beginning of spring. I thank the crocuses every year. #resiliencechat
Q4) Setting goals with students helped them become aware and own their own success, and sometimes failure. Through the successes and failures students learned what worked and what needed changed in order to meet/exceed goals! #Resiliencechat#goals
Let's consider one more component that we hear that researchers say can build #happiness "#Empathy" #Resiliencechat Q5 How does building this look to you?
A4 Whenever my kids self-assess, part of the reflection process is to set goals. I give them feedback on their next projects with their goals in mind, and eventually they'll reflect again.
#ResilienceChat
A5 As a Humanities teacher, I find just about everything we do can help build empathy. Reading and discussing. Identity work. Social justice work. etc. etc. etc.

I get genuinely and deeply upset if I don't feel I've learned something (and bent the arc of the moral universe towards justice) each and every day. #ResilienceChat
A5 Complicated. Although I am a caregiver, I don't always have enough patience to show empathy. Sometimes being tired and crabby wins out. #resiliencechat
One can dream. And many days, I get to live the dream. With Rock Band, too, primarily in watching the kids care for each other in learning and polishing each piece.
#ResilienceChat
Ah, yes. The pursuit of happiness. You'd think that Thomas Jefferson would have been a deeper thinker than that. Then again no contact with Eastern religions. #resiliencechat
That it does. With teachers, too, as hard as we work to never let that happen. I can make it work for many months in a row, sometimes more than a year, and yet...

Q5) Getting kids and staff to think about things from more than just their perspective. As an English teacher I did this through novels, loved seeing tears in their eyes at the end of a novel. #Resiliencechat
And that gets to the crux of the matter of why happiness bugs me versus joy. That Protestant thing creeps in. Sense of entitlement. Make me happy versus joy through meditation. #Resiliencechat
A6 Well, you probably know I close most every day posting #EverydayKindness and #Coexist. They're a chance to keep myself grounded and check in on the day, plus (so I'm told) give hope to others.
#ResilienceChat
A7 I believe we *have* to work for equity, in our policies, in the application of our policies, in our every day interactions. Without that, we have neither justice nor peace.

A7 For me, and I know it's not for everyone, democratic classroom brings near daily excitement and joy to our work together. It starts with a deep respect for kids.

#SEL curriculum for every grade level, with dedicated time to teach it. We teach children how to wash their hands, and yet, sometimes miss teaching about keeping their minds healthy. #resiliencechat
