Hi #AppleEDUchat. I am Brian, a Design Thinking/Challenge Based Instructor in North Carolina. Just saw this chat from @WickedDecent so thought I would pop in
Q1) Student-Centered Learning is Competency-Based Learning. What does competency-based learning look like in the classroom, the school, and in the real-world? To what extent does competency-based learning mirror the real world? #AppleEDUChat#sblchat#edchatme cc @StudentCntrHub
A1) The world is competency-based. Period. #endofreport. One doesn't get promoted in a job by doing 70% of the work... they get promoted by doing a good job at the work (& dependability, etc.). Percentages dont equate to competency. #AppleEDUchat cc @StudentCntrHub#sblchat
Evening #AppleEDUchat! Dan Ryder, Edu Director of the Success & Innovation Center at @MBCampus in sunny Farmington, Maine! Talking 4 Tenets of Student-Centered Learning via @StudentCntrHub tonight! (Chk the #SICMBC tag to see what we do here in the foothills)
A1 We focus on certain competencies with each CBL. Currently, we are working on creativity & collaboration w our "Making Stories Come Alive." We find these competencies are as important (if not more) than learning standards since our Ss need them in the real word #AppleEDUchat

Hello Brian! Great to see you here in #appleeduchat tonight! I reckon you'll find a lot of value in applying #designthinking mindsets & design process methodologies to building student centered learning cc @StudentCntrHub#dtk12chat
A1) When we get a new job, it is all about learning the competencies of that job, applying our past learning, being flexible & persistent. All things that fit into competency learning. #AppleEDUchat
It is so important to stress this with both Ss and parents - success is tied to how well you perform and use the gifts you have and mastering the art of having others help you when needed and getting the resources you need #AppleEDUChat
A1) We see this type of learning every day in our Career Tech classes. The students learn new skills daily and must be able to master them before being able to perform them in their careers #appleeduchat
So true! Difficult for young adults to that without the practice in our learning environment. Those soft skills are make or break for them to keep those jobs. #AppleEDUchat
A1. Competency-based ed is abt student learning and learning in general. It’s abt recognizing progress, celebrating it as well as failure, and continually learning from both #AppleEDUchat
We have found our Ss who have not always been successful in school are doing much better with our new approach especially when authentic audiences are involved #AppleEDUChat
A1: Everything we do in life is competency-based, from working with others, to creating solutions to problems. We have to plan each lesson based on relevance to "real world" situations. Without relevance, there is no real student engagement. #AppleEDUchat
A1 Competency-based learning relies upon evidence; It isn't about completing every assignment or points off for late work; it's about students generating evidence of their understanding -- and that's very different from how school has looked in the past #appleeduchat#sblchat
Q1) Student-Centered Learning is Competency-Based Learning. What does competency-based learning look like in the classroom, the school, and in the real-world? To what extent does competency-based learning mirror the real world? #AppleEDUChat#sblchat#edchatme cc @StudentCntrHub
In case you missed Q1 What does competency-based learning look like in the classroom, the school, and in the real-world? To what extent does competency-based learning mirror the real world? #AppleEDUchat

So true. I love see authentic products - I had gotten tired of answers that were googled and such. Authentic work is so much more engaging to evaluate for me as a teacher too #AppleEDUChat
I agree totally. As long as they can demonstrate understanding and apply the concept/idea, it doesn’t have to be tangible. I believe MAKING it tangible is the next step, and a crucial one at that. #AppleEDUchat
A1 Using the framework from Learning First Tech Second can help highlight competency based skills that enhance and extend instructional opportunities. #AppleEduChat#innovate28
Q2) Student-Centered Learning is Personalized Learning. Why is it important to personalize instruction, classroom design, assessment, and curriculum? How might we create personalized learning environments for diverse learners? #AppleEDUchat#sblchat#edchatme cc @StudentCntrHub
A1 Competency-based learning relies upon evidence; It isn't about completing every assignment or points off for late work; it's about students generating evidence of their understanding -- and that's very different from how school has looked in the past #appleeduchat#sblchat

A2) Kids are people. People deserve to be treated with respect and value. An individual is more than part of a group; an individual is a person. Personalizing means we learn who the learner is, and focus on the needs of that PERSON. Empathy first. #AppleEDUchat cc @StudentCntrHub
I like this idea of relevance to "real world" rather than suggesting that every classroom experience HAS to be an authentic "real world" task; sometimes we forget school exists in the real world & there's also room for fun & whimsy in learning #appleeduchat
A2 One size does not fit all. Each S is unique &different. If we do not allow for personalization, then we keep the S from becoming the best that he/she can be. WE have to know our Ss, their strengths, weaknesses, & experiences so we can customize their learning #AppleEDUChat
A2: all learning should be personalized - kids aren’t clones - they all have strengths, just in different areas - I dont believe all kids need to learn the exact same things #AppleEDUchat
A1 In the real world, we’re generally not asked to demonstrate our abilities by completing an exam with hypothetical questions, we provide examples or proof of what we can do. Competency-based learning works in a similar way. #AppleEDUchat

A2: I love this question. Personalizing learning means we take the time to understand our learners and provide opportunities that fit their needs #AppleEDUChat
We are in our first experiment of this course and learning much. All our 9th and 10th graders take it. I will pull up some info and send to you. You can learn some mroe by checking out my blog at https://t.co/jq6ZC1GJLT#AppleEDUChat

A2) Personalized instruction gives students a chance to explore various types of ways to become better learners. I love it when students find a technique that finally works for them. #appleeduchat
A2) Building learning environments for all can start with allowing Ss to choose how they will demonstrate learning. Allowing Ss to use their strengths builds so many more skills than asking them to always work w/in deficit areas. #AppleEduchat
A2: Personalized learning is VITAL and ESSENTIAL in our classrooms. If our students are the center of WHY we are providing learning opportunities, then they are part of process. They begin to see and understand WHAT they need to be successful learners! #AppleEDUchat
It’s amazing what a little value and purpose can give to a learning environment. … wait… it isn’t amazing… it’s human nature… it’s obvious… and we’ve know this for centuries. WAKE UP, SCHOOLS! #AppleEDUChat
A2 It's a tall order; it's why we started the #SICMBC via @GearUpME; bc personalization isn't easy, we created a support system for Ss & Ts & Admin to access to help academic, socio-emotional & vocational goal setting & achievement #appleeduchat#sblchat#edchatme#gearupworks
Q2) Student-Centered Learning is Personalized Learning. Why is it important to personalize instruction, classroom design, assessment, and curriculum? How might we create personalized learning environments for diverse learners? #AppleEDUchat#sblchat#edchatme cc @StudentCntrHub
Building relationships that go beyond teacher & student - really enjoy being colleagues with young adults. We both learn so much more! All skills they will need in the ‘real' world. #AppleEduchat
A2) Kids need to see themselves in the learning for them to have buy in, motivation , and excitement. They need to drive their own ships! How can we find out what that looks like, ask them! What do they want to see or learn and how do they want to do it? #AppleEDUChat
I like this a great deal; and strengths can take a lot of different looks -- strengths might be interests, strengths might be skills, strengths might be points of personal investment; HMW leverage Ss strengths into deeper learning? #appleeduchat#sblchat
A2) Building learning environments for all can start with allowing Ss to choose how they will demonstrate learning. Allowing Ss to use their strengths builds so many more skills than asking them to always work w/in deficit areas. #AppleEduchat
A2 Personalized Learning is important bc when students are engaged in the design process and create in a way they prefer the students have an authentic connection to their learning and will never forget the whole event of creating to show what they know! 😀 #AppleEDUchat
I think this is where competency-based learning comes in. The deeper learning comes from clear targets and goals, and those goals can be based on standards, yet personalized & highly rigorous. #connections#AppleEDUchat
Agreed! So how might we do that? AND how might we balance that with what we know they need to be successful in ventures beyond the present? #appleeduchat
Q3) Student-Centered Learning is Student-Owned https://t.co/lpBoapOOHz might we move beyond a tradition of T-centered control, mgmt, and extrinsic motivators to Ss-owned leadership, authentic integration & intrinsic motivation? #AppleEDUChat#sblchat#edchatme cc @StudentCntrHub
A2 If it’s personalized, then it’s meaningful to the students, which motivates them to be involved. It also helps the student to connect what they’re learning to the real world. #AppleEDUchat
A1: Flexibility in the classroom is needed to address different learning styles. Ss understanding themselves as learners and the tools they need to be successful in and out of the classroom. #AppleEduchat @ StudentCntrHub
A3) Tools & curriculum like #EveryoneCanCreate allow for the learners to take control, whether they're HS seniors or Kindergarten students. If they own it, they will make meaning of it... and if they make meaning of it, they will learn it. #AppleEDUchat cc @StudentCntrHub
Annn.d.. that's still making about standards defined by the educational system; I'm wondering what ideas folks might have for integrating student strengths into establishing pathways for achieving those targets & goals #appleeduchat
Once they are comfortable with this idea, they learn to pair with others to build a stronger team - not because they are a friend. Together the raise the bar farther & work harder than ever before. #AppleEDUchat
So how might we go about that personalization? What might be a structure or strategy a teacher might implement that helps build those connections? #appleeduchat
A3: Ts have to change first. If we can change our mindset, we can become okay with letting the students be the leaders and the possibilities are endless #AppleEDUChat
For those of you keeping score:
Student-Centered Learning Tenets...
Tenet #1: Competency-Based
Tenet #2: Personalized
Tenet #2: Student-Owned
More into on these tenets via @StudentCntrHub#AppleEDUChat
A3) I have turned some labs in my Sports Medicine program into Self-Directed Learning Modules. While the information is all contained in the module the responsibility rests on the student #appleeduchat
A3 One technique that has worked well in #SICMBC asking Qs: If you could spend your time creating anything -- even if you think you aren't good at it -- what would you make? What do you wish you had more time to do but school keeps you from doing it? #appleeduchat#sblchat
Q3) Student-Centered Learning is Student-Owned https://t.co/lpBoapOOHz might we move beyond a tradition of T-centered control, mgmt, and extrinsic motivators to Ss-owned leadership, authentic integration & intrinsic motivation? #AppleEDUChat#sblchat#edchatme cc @StudentCntrHub
So how might admin & teacher leaders create opportunities & culture to allow for that mindset change, which is very scary & intimidating to many? #AppleEDUchat
A3: We are really using student Data Binders where Ss own their their learning. They will tell you with pride what they need help with, and what they excel at. This makes learning relevant! #AppleEDUchat
A3 Teachers don’t have to be everything to all students. When I encourage #StuVoice & #StuChoice & remind kids I am more of a facilitator it really gives them authentic ownership but I must check in often on progress. 👍🏻 #AppleEDUchat
And that can be super scary . . . what's one step you've seen colleagues take that have moved the needle in that direction? I know @MrsWolfe3 does a remarkable job providing students space & flexibility to take ownership of the larger summative assessments #appleeduchat
And that check in is vital; I know when I first tried shifting to to a more #stuvoice#stuchoice learning environment, I got too complacent w progress chks & soon we were all overwhelmed #appleeduchat#sblchat cc @StudentCntrHub
A3 Teachers don’t have to be everything to all students. When I encourage #StuVoice & #StuChoice & remind kids I am more of a facilitator it really gives them authentic ownership but I must check in often on progress. 👍🏻 #AppleEDUchat
The flexible learning environments happening in our K-5 classrooms @AOS94ME are based in academic & SEL data, to provide Ss opptys & spaces to grow at their pace in a safe place. All of the first 3 tenets are in play at the same time. #trulyawesome#AppleEDUchat
A3) Given the ability to own their learning empowers Ss to believe in themselves. They learn they can accomplish their goals & ask questions without feeling foolish. #AppleEDUchat
A3 This has been challenging , I had to forget some of the "Rules" we are taught as Ts - we have to allow flexibility & change our own mindset to create S centered learning. My admin developed this idea so we evaluated based on creating this, not the regular eval #AppleEDUChat
A3 In Distance Ed, we tell the faculty about the need to transition from the “sage on the stage” to the “guide on the side”. I think something similar would work here as well - teachers shouldn’t lead the journey but be there to help along the way. #AppleEDUchat
I like the idea of getting a cohort of teachers on board with this sort of work to help them benefit from one another's work AND to start creating a stronger ripple, moving of the tide #appleeduchat#sblchat
The fourth (and final) tenet of Student-Centered Learning is coming in about 1-2 minutes. We’ll look at that final tenet, then start thinking about what to do next. #biastowardaction#AppleEDUchat
Admins have to understand and be part of the design. My admin led our design for this and has reminded us on how to measure our own success #AppleEDUChat
Q4) Student-Centered Learning is Anywhere/Anytime Learning. How might we use the tools and technology available to us to break down walls of accessibility and make LEARNING the constant, and TIME the variable? #AppleEDUChat#sblchat#edchatme cc @StudentCntrHub
A3: Campus Admin needs complete buy-in, and must offer support to Ts. Ts must feel that it is ok to do things differently, and results may not be what they expected at first. THAT IS OK! #AppleEDUchat
Yes… but not with the intention and purpose that’s happening in our K-5 realm, especially as it relates to scheduling and “course” flexibility. #AppleEDUchat
Exactly! Even if they aren't at your school, build a network of champions of #studentvoice. I'm so grateful to have amazing teachers that help support and build me up #AppleEDUChat
A4) Digital tools are great barrier breakers, but the biggest barrier they break is the concept of the teacher holding all of the information. Now, with a device, a learner has access to more information than is possible to ever remember. #AppleEDUchat cc @StudentCntrHub
A2: Personalized Learning is important because, “one size does not fit all.” Make learning relevant to engage all ss and provide multiple opportunities for ss to be successful. Create a safe learning environment is crucial for ss to take risks. #AppleEduchat @ StudentCntrHub
Agreed! What's a step we can take toward the guide role? How might we take a gentle step from what is known and comfortable to a place that is lesser known, more uncomfortable, but ultimately better for student learning & agency? #appleeduchat
A3 In Distance Ed, we tell the faculty about the need to transition from the “sage on the stage” to the “guide on the side”. I think something similar would work here as well - teachers shouldn’t lead the journey but be there to help along the way. #AppleEDUchat
A4a) It's important to remember, too, that many rural areas don't have access to quality broadband, making these tools challenging to use and to convince districts to purchase. Digital equity is needed across the globe. See @digitalequityct FMI. #AppleEDUchat cc @StudentCntrHub
My space is just a small start now, but I can't tell you how much it's changed student perspective in my room! My rubrics just apply to a whole bunch of ways students can demonstrate learning. #AppleEDUChat
A4 I think that eliminating time as the variable makes a difference once we help Ss understand how to manage their time. Once we provide them with access and device, we have to ensure that they have support in learning how to manage and create #AppleEDUChat
A4) Participating in online webinars, global conferences, share their learning online & can use time at home to work on their projects. Time is on their side with technology (plus no lost papers). #AppleEDUchat
I felt a shift when I moved my rubrics to being less about dictating what a product needs to look like and more to what a product needs to prove #appleeduchat
Sometimes reading a book together, such as @Catlin_Tucker 's Blended Learning in Action, is a great way to start a discussion about a shared vision and taking steps together to leverage the classroom opportunities that technology affords Ts and Ss. #AppleEDUchat
It has made a world of difference. The work that we do would not flourish in other environments where we are evaluated on the "traditional" teacher tool. We have even had to challenge our own beliefs about S learning and engagement #AppleEDUChat
In reply to
@MiaLMorrison, @DrewetteCard, @KammasKersch
The critical difference between a SCALE and a RUBRIC. Scales are objective-oriented; rubrics are task oriented. Once we focus on the objective over the task, the world becomes our oyster. #AppleEDUChat
I felt a shift when I moved my rubrics to being less about dictating what a product needs to look like and more to what a product needs to prove #appleeduchat

A4) Our S’s are 1:1 iPads. I love Google Classroom. Everything is in GC from the beginning of the chapter. PPT, notes, ancillary materials, links. Great for S’s who are absent. No more “What did I miss?” #appleeduchat
A4: a learning management system is a great start! I think taking advantage of tools like camera and notes to teach students the ways technology can be used to observe the world around us are great ways. #AppleEDUChat
A3: Campus Admin needs complete buy-in, and must offer support to Ts. Ts must feel that it is ok to do things differently, and results may not be what they expected at first. THAT IS OK! #AppleEDUchat
A4: To me, technology has become the equalizer. We have deployed many devices to Ss from grades 3-9. Giving everyone access to the same tools has had a great impact in so many ways. Digital tools have helped Ss and Ts, but the Ts must create those relevant lessons #AppleEDUchat
How might this impact students who don’t have access at home? And I’m not meaning they can’t get the WiFi password… I mean, there IS no WiFi available. What then? #AppleEDUchat
The Four Tenets of Student-Centered Learning (via @StudentCntrHub) are:
Tenet #1: Competency-Based
Tenet #2: Personalized
Tenet #3: Student-Owned
Tenet #4: Anywhere/Anytime
Now… let’s dive into what we can do with these.
#AppleEDUChat
We love having a consistent digital workflow with an LMS! @Schoology is the backbone of blended learning in our district. Ts create an online classroom for Ss and it is the hub of curriculum workflow. We also house our district curriculum in Schoology! #AppleEDUchat
Q5) Which tenet(s) can you see immediate implementation opportunities in your classroom/school/district? Which tenet(s) will be the most challenging to implement & overcome? Explain your thinking. #AppleEDUchat#edchatme#sblchat cc @StudentCntrHub
This is a tough one… while you want the students to explore something meaningful, there still have to be some boundaries to what they can do. I thinking of something along the lines of Problem Based Learning, where there is a balance of freedom/choice & structure. #AppleEDUchat
A4: Providing strategies for inquiry! Fostering curiosity and showing students how to use technology appropriately to answer the curiosity ! #AppleEDUChat
A5) Biggest oppty: #stuvoice. Finding ways to improve learner agency will allow the other tenets to fall into place. Biggest challenge: competency-based. Defining the concept of "competency" is a bigger challenge than originally expected. #AppleEDUchat cc @StudentCntrHub
We’ve gone away from all common assessments, and use common scales exclusively. This gives students freedom and agency to demonstrate competency while also reducing the burden of “test creation” on the Ts. Very freeing! #AppleEDUchat
A4 I love encouraging students to present what they’ve created to their peers but I’ve also been working with @Seesaw & #seesawblogs to present to global audiences and I’m setting up @Flipgrid#GridPals for the same sharing. #AppleEDUChat
A3: Learning does not only take place in classroom. Recognizing ss strengths and building from that empowers ss to take ownership of their own learning with confidence #AppleEDUchat@StudentCntrHub
This is a tough one… while you want the students to explore something meaningful, there still have to be some boundaries to what they can do. I thinking of something along the lines of Problem Based Learning, where there is a balance of freedom/choice & structure. #AppleEDUchat
A5 We are working on helping Ss develop competency in the 4Cs and student agency. It is challenging but worth it. We are not there yet but we are working to get there and have made progress #AppleEDUChat
Before Ss leave for the day we flip their doc/sheets to available offline. Apple apps do not require wifi if stored on the device. As teachers we need to remember that & make choices that work for all. #AppleEDUchat
A5: All 4 Tenants take time to plan and implement EFFECTIVELY. I believe results will surface in time, just like anything worth waiting for. Never rush! #AppleEDUchat
Common assessments always killed me...makes so much sense to embrace the standard and allow s’s and t’s to use their strengths to get there however that may be #AppleEDUchat
We define competency as “Independently Applying the Expectations.” Each standard has 3 parts: Independence, Complexity (rigor / verbs), and Content (nouns). Do all & you’re proficient. It’s a simple definition in the abstract… consistent application is challenging. #AppleEDUChat
A5) Student owned is a struggle for our new recruits. Some time in spring there is a moment when the idea clicks for them. Want to find more ways for them to enjoy the anytime/anywhere opportunities. #AppleEDUchat
Q6) END GAME! Make and share a plan of action for TOMORROW, using one of the 4 Tenets of Student-Centered Learning. How will you know if it’s working? How will you hold yourself accountable? #AppleEDUchat#edchatme#sblchat cc @StudentCntrHub
A4 Making learning the constant seems to be the easier of the two - technology can make that a possibility at any time or place. With time, maybe it would be helpful to group students by pace or stage of achievement so they could collaborate? #AppleEDUchat
#AppleEDUchat END GAME. I'm planning to work with staff on consistency in implementing competency-based practices & definitions. I am working w/ a team of Ss to ensure positive changes are made & felt by Ss... they'll hold us all accountable. cc @StudentCntrHub@AOS94ME
Common assessments always killed me...makes so much sense to embrace the standard and allow s’s and t’s to use their strengths to get there however that may be #AppleEDUchat
A4: I fortunate to have taught a a ConnectEd school for two years. The growth ss made from digital tools was an eye opener for me as a teacher. Ss can use native apps to work on projects. Teachers need to change the way we teach and teach to how Ss learn. #AppleEduchat
A6) Tomorrow is our holiday feast. So young adults will be putting up their decorations (all hand made by them) before our guests from two other districts join us. Sharing their creativity with all. #AppleEDUchat
We worked to establish this culture shift when we went 1:1 iPads 6 yrs ago. It laid the groundwork for a Stu-centered model to follow. Still, culture shift takes time, reframing, proof to stick. #AppleEDUChat
A6: It is always best to have someone with you on the path. Having a partner will keep you BOTH accountable and offer more support when needed. Get Admin involved too! You all can share the excitement and energy that comes from change. #AppleEDUchat
It’s a shame that by the time learners come to middle school (let alone HS), they’ve too often become institutionalized with this learned helplessness. We need to intentionally teach them what independence is, feels like, looks like, & to embrace the scariness of it #AppleEDUchat
a6) In the #SICMBC we are going to be working to better keep track of the wide variety of projects, plans, goals, and pathways students are on; we've yet to come up w a system that works as well as we'd like #appleeduchat#edchatme#edtech207#sblchat cc @StudentCntrHub
