Hey, friends! The September #KaganChat has begun! Please introduce yourself and let us know where you are tonight. Remember to include #KaganChat in your Tweet so we can all see it!
#kaganchat We’re having a storm here in Chicago. My hotel‘s Wi-Fi is sort of spotty, so I apologize if I am not able to communicate. Hopefully, everything will go well.
A1: Cooperative Classroom expectations are connected to our school’s PBIS plan: Choosing to be responsible, Using positive choices, Being respectful, Staying safe. (CUBS). Kagan structures are as much about Social Emotional Learning as they are about academics. #KaganChat

A1- not sure my answer posted. I set my class up in teams and use structures regularly. I set high expectations for my class to work cooperatively. We practice and practice more. I use a lot of positive reinforcement to keep the kids working towards our goals. #KaganChat
For example, we “Use positive choices” when we encourage each other using positive parting gambits. We “Be respectful” we coaching during RallyCoach. So many structures are perfect for Ss to construct and learn these behavior expectations.
A2: To check for understanding I ask Ss, “What questions do you have?” I’ve found that this phrasing over “Do you have any questions?” interestingly produces more questions and clarifications from Ss. #KaganChat

Yes... High expectations with everything and everyone! Students work together as TEAMS and encourage each other. Quiet signal is given and ALL students react positively helping others to get on board... Also do a Kagan Teambuilding once a week trying to do twice a week! #TEAM
A3: I’ve had some fun with modeling structures for 1st graders by using puppets or other toys. I charge Ss to notice the interactions between myself and/or the puppets. I can strategically sabotage the structure and model troubleshooting. #KaganChat

After modeling the correct way to use the structure, I like to have students act out what we should NOT be doing during this structure (they love that!). This gives them a clear picture of what to do vs. what not to do. #KaganChat

#KaganChat Are you familiar with Wooden Method? John Wooden, the winningest coach in collegiate basketball history, did that exact same thing with his players. So powerful!

Here is Q4 for our #KaganChat — please share how you provide positive attention and recognition for responsible behavior in your classroom and/or at your school.
A4: Providing positive attention and recognition is all connected to our PBIS plan. Ss earn tix for displaying CUBS behavior which earns them no$ rewards like 15 mins of play w/ a friend, using the teacher chair or reading the morning announcements. #KaganChat
We always introduce a new Kagan Structure with a fun topic and build in content once the structure is learned. If you start a new structure with content students will get frustrated and hate the structure due to the content.
A4- I started using SWAG tags (most call them brag tags) this year. Our PBIS team provides rewards - 4 per month. Teachers have goals set that students must reach to receive each award. #KaganChat
Q5: To be honest, I don’t use many sponge activities. I usually just encourage Ss to grab their favorite book from their bins and “steal” reading minutes. This is something Ss have come to really enjoy. #KaganChat

A6: To manage team materials, Ss keep markers, pencils, boards etc. in a “team tub.” Teams are responsible for keeping items organized and in working condition. Team Tub Checker is an end of the day Leadership position in our classroom to help keep teams accountable. #KaganChat
A6 I have a team helper each day. That person is in charge of getting team materials from wherever needed and returning them in the proper place.#KaganChat

One easy way is to spin the wheel and whoever it lands on is the table captain for the instructional block, period, day, week, month, semester, etc. #KaganChat
#KaganChat Great idea! Not only does it prevent you from having to be the only one distributing and collecting materials, it keeps your students more active and, consequently, more engaged!

#KaganChat Q6....sorry I’m late to the Kagan party tonight!!! Numbering seats is so important for managing materials. I’m in classrooms where it takes too long to pick up and organize materials because their seats aren’t number 1-4 and a/b in their teams.
Thank you so much for being with us here at #KaganChat tonight! Mark your calendar for Tuesday, October 30 for the next chat. Remember to check #KaganChat each Tuesday for the Weekly Challenges.
