  • Ms_Levinsky May 1 @ 8:39 PM EDT
Hi! I'm Andrea from MSAD 51. We have a very low free/reduced lunch rate #edchatme
  • jonpratt - Moderator May 1 @ 8:39 PM EDT
Our F&R percentage is lower than most surrounding districts, but still significant & impactful systemically. #EdChatME
  • eringobragh29 May 1 @ 8:39 PM EDT
That's a really tough time of day for a lot of kids at my school, too. #edchatme.
    • MelissaElie May 1 @ 8:38 PM EDT
Def. a major issue. We have @ 45% free and reduced rate: Hunger greatly impacts many kids, especially in the period before lunch.

  • eringobragh29 May 1 @ 8:48 PM EDT
A2: My Ss have huge time constraints, and many times learning isn't the priority. They don't always see ed. as their ticket out. #EdChatME
  • andrewtwallace May 1 @ 8:48 PM EDT
A2: If you are thinking about your next meal, or how you missed the last one, your focus on learning will be limited/impacted #edchatme
  • jbailey8 May 1 @ 8:48 PM EDT
A2: some Ss do not have the ability to cope with stress as easily. Poverty can cause constant "fight or flight" response in brains #edchatME
  • eringobragh29 May 1 @ 8:48 PM EDT
Agreed. Some of them approach every day like it's a survival situation. #edchatme

Q2: What would you say is the biggest limitation placed upon students that come from a low SES household? #EdChatME
  • eringobragh29 May 1 @ 8:53 PM EDT
It's a bias with a scary statistical foundation, though. I agree, we need to assess each student as an individual first! #edchatme

  • WickedDecent May 1 @ 8:59 PM EDT

    In reply to @WickedDecent
  • WickedDecent May 1 @ 9:02 PM EDT
Absolutely; routines and systems provide structure; breaking a routine doesn't need punitive responses -- esp for Ss of poverty #edchatme
