Woo Hoo! Love the Mid-Del representation! Welcome!
A1 Cross-curricular = activities that involve more than one subject. I often see it in project based learning classrooms!
Hi and
Joy Hofmeister, State Supt
Ready for tonight's chat & tomorrow's π
A1) making connections. No discrete boxes
wishes you were here since you invented cross curriculum education
1a: Science that uses math terminology; combining history writing skills into their science research.
A1) I hear blending reading, writing, science and or SS, and math
A1) Cross-curricular brings a vision of a full lesson enveloping math, science, history, and Language Arts to gain knowledge
A1: Admitting we don't know it all. My expertise in langarts can only take Ss so far. Crosscurr is a Ts desperation to give Ss more.
OK, let's not define buzzwords w/ more buzzwords - who I love.
A1: Linking curricula across many subject areas
A1) teaching ss that the stuff they learn in our classes doesn't just apply here. Life has no subjects
Q1 working together to tie our subjects together so we are teaching standards that work together at the same time.
No, I had too much updates to do! Things are looking great!
A1: Collaborating with teachers in other content areas to help students deepen understanding and make connections.
A1: the song to which I've justified my job for...ever.
A1) Making connections between subjects by making material relatable. Objectives encompass more than just one topic
A1: Letting kids pursue their passions and learn in ways that are meaningful and important to them! Holistic learning!
A1:Gives Ss the chance to see the relevance in their learning, connects math to science, to SS, to ELA
A1. Cross curricular is how life happens. We use knowledge from many different areas in our daily lives. We should teach like it to.
A1 1st things I think of R & lessons! Always gr8 cross curricular opportunities for learning! https://t.co/cE9pp3jCgh
A1: Content areas collide! Also, more based in real life scenarios.
Subjects combining curriculum to give students a broader understanding how they interconnect https://t.co/plqSA4j7Gt
Winner. https://t.co/HB2jcU3dFs
A1: Letting kids pursue their passions and learn in ways that are meaningful and important to them! Holistic learning!
A1 What great Ts have always done. Not teaching in isolation and showing the relationships of concepts
Can someone periscope this?!?!?!
A1) Realism. I can't remember the last time I sat down to do Algebra for Algebra's sake and kept what I did just in my head.
A1 Sometimes, cross-curricular is working with Ts in other grade-levels, buildings, districts...
A2: An open mind, connections that are easy to connect, and S buy-in - and an interesting lesson!
Just curios - if you are raise your hand!
A2: Effective communication and Lots of effective fun.
Erin Barnes joining 10 mins late and NOT at the Bleu Gardens, but maybe I am someplace better...maybe I am...
a1: Difficult to pull off (esp. secondary schools) where many teachers remain isolated
A2: It can be a very simple awareness on the part of Ts as to what other Ts are doing and how - right reference at the right time.
A2 I think it starts by asking a meaningful big-picture question. One that can't be answered by "googling" it!
A1: Something we need 2 do better! Having Ts collaborate together & make lessons together= Historical writing class for secondary!
A2: Balanced input, action, and outcomes from ALL Disciplines involved... Also calm and cool heads... https://t.co/7wQOJ9u56c
About to comment that you are on fire again but now wondering,"Does this lady's fire ever go out?" https://t.co/qI3PQyHkuc
A1: Admitting we don't know it all. My expertise in langarts can only take Ss so far. Crosscurr is a Ts desperation to give Ss more.
A2 Knowing which standards go together from different subjects. Finding the connections is key. https://t.co/M6WFSAV3l4
A1) I think of the podcast Radiolab. They do cross-curricular so, so well!
A2: I would think a strong PLN in your school would be vital. Departments talking and collaborating. https://t.co/V0v4dVbIKs
A2: communication, planning, creativity, flexibility
A2: It can be a big coordinated deal, but let's not be 'all or nothing' about it.
A2. Planning. Collaboration. Creating the connections. Let kids explore.
A1: Cross-curricular makes me think we will plan together to make learning relevant - how kids live - how kids think.
A2: Thorough collaborative planning with fellow Ts. Speaking & Listening embedded throughout.
A2 Major component-skill typically associated with one content area used to facilitate learning in another content area
A2: In secondary, time for teachers to collaborate. I would have loved special time for History to meet with ELA
A2: Your electives and specials are pros at CCL. You should ask them for help.
A2) primary focus to me is "intentionality". Cross-curricular works b/c Ts make it happen; not accidental https://t.co/HIaasttfzI
A2: Understanding our students and how they learn. Gotta know how to reach them! COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION are paramount!!
Janalyn Taylor, Clinton principal...no tardy slip
A2: Know what you are talking about, dont just make stuff up and expect someone else to clean up your history.
Jennifer Williams, HS ELA, I'll be in & out.
Looking forward to using even more marginalized voices & working on real equity.
unless we are talking about moon landings and lunar orbits.
True... https://t.co/E4oXkNScpY
a1: Difficult to pull off (esp. secondary schools) where many teachers remain isolated
A2) IMO effectiveness 1st needs connections with Ss lives, an authentic look at why, and the willingness to keep an open mind.
A2) being in step with other Ts. Teach your concepts and how they can be used in other avenues of life
A2: Components are important but what is the most important is student learning.
A2) The pieces have to fit. It's a puzzle, not a jumble of unrelated bits.
Yea, I'm not there either.
A2: Great multidisciplinary driving questions and open facilitating of student-controlled efforts. https://t.co/R4eSybUT7w
A2: Beyond subj. lv knowledge. Critical thinking, collaboration, creation applied to a particular target concept.
uhhhhβ¦.its a lot of people staring at their phones :-)
That is me, sweating buckets like a true Okie, but repping Clinton
A2: Lots of communication and planning. Selling the Ss on the coolness of diving into interdisciplinary connections. Follow-thru..
A2: Relevance, connection
A1: meaningful learning that connects subject areas&real life application. A dream education often squashed https://t.co/1NkBxRVSeW
They are probably playing
Q1 at middle school I struggle with the timing of it.
A2 cross curricular needs to be authentic..not forced. Requires time to dig deep and make connections.
A2: needs to feel authentic and not contrived... Has to be purposeful and not just for teacher to look good on paper or Twitter, lol)
A2 I also think it can be organic too...like when a student brings in his/her own passion into another class/subject!
A2: Do it b/c it feeds the learning, not b/c it checks a box or gives an Admin a topic for their thesis.
A2 effective CCL involves authentic connections between content areas. Solving real-world problems with real world tools can help!
A2: Collaboration between depts and grade levels, can create an awesome lesson/unit for CC
I walk while I Twitter chat and I actually thought my neighbors must think I am doing Pokemon go
Seriously this. Failure is imminent if your motivations are the latter. https://t.co/UdXMusFDXG
A2: Do it b/c it feeds the learning, not b/c it checks a box or gives an Admin a topic for their thesis.
Amen. ππ» https://t.co/fkiC8QSGec
A2: Do it b/c it feeds the learning, not b/c it checks a box or gives an Admin a topic for their thesis.
Joining late! Cordell Ehrich, Principal at Cimarron MS in Edmond.
A1 My subject, inst music has inherent cross curricular benefits. Can we do this in a way that enhances this AND music.
A2 Student questions, relevance, meaningful instruction, meaningful contexts
I think this is a great way to incorporate different areas https://t.co/YjQ45Y9R8s
A2 I also think it can be organic too...like when a student brings in his/her own passion into another class/subject!
yes absolutely! All teachers can benefit from dedicated time for cross curricular collaboration
A2) content/practices from ea curricular area must be a full player, not just sitting on the sidelines
A2 meaningful focus questions that help create coherence in student learning
a2: Clarity of goals/ xCurricular should not be done just to do it - Do it to make learning authentic
A3: I'd rather ask 'What are the dangers of pretending your subject exists in isolation of all other reality?'
I love when this happens! We need to facilitate more opportunities like this. https://t.co/S92j2vsd8t
A2 I also think it can be organic too...like when a student brings in his/her own passion into another class/subject!
Like the grade level addition!!! https://t.co/6ScIywpqDC
A2: Collaboration between depts and grade levels, can create an awesome lesson/unit for CC
A3: Ss learning to collaborate with each other.
A1b: & 2nd thought about CCL. Is 1 curriculum singular, 2 curricula plural, and if written it become a curriculas?
A1: isn't life "cross-curricular"? I try to show Ss ELA is useful in all areas of life because it's communication (everything is).
a3: Increase in S engagement at multiple levels. Ts step back as facilitators/moderators to fuel the fire.
A2 Some of my greatest "connected" units weren't planned. Ss had questions we went where they led.
A3 Connections! Ss can see what they're learning connected to every area.
A2: There's 1 component to effective CCL--our subjects being as tight as this guy's button. https://t.co/M1BcArqc9s
A3) more thorough understanding of textbook applications that can actually be applied to personal life choices
A2 in elementary literature is an effective way to have cc learning
A3 I think CCL can help Ss make real-world connections. CCL with real-world applications can be powerful experiences for Ss
from 8-9pm! Talking cross curricular teaching! You would love it and bring back good stuff to
A3) Learning is all about making connections.
A3) Opportunities for stronger connections
A3: The benefits for students comes is huge. They see how subjects tie together. Helps cut down on "Why do I need to learn this?"
A3: Students are engaged, building connections, and oh having fun. Have I mentioned having fun tonight?
A3 S can learn to see and use connections and patterns that do -- and will -- occur in real life.
Great opportunity for https://t.co/BZEtzO4XrF
I love when this happens! We need to facilitate more opportunities like this. https://t.co/S92j2vsd8t
A2 I also think it can be organic too...like when a student brings in his/her own passion into another class/subject!
A3: They begin to understand that school isn't about a few subjects, it's about how the world functions together.
A3:It connects info for Ss and solves the old question of "when will I ever use this?" Why do I need to learn this?
A3: students know learning can't be isolated and all knowledge is connected in & outside of school https://t.co/KpjaLNfd9N
A3) The main benefit of CCL for our Ss is the play on THEIR interests and talents to gain a deeper knowledge of a common topic.
A3) It keeps them interested, gives them a more realistic view of the info. & helps build links between the information & the world.
Suzanne Sutton, 8th English @ Classen SAS, late to the party bc of power outage, but all is good now!
A3: Also, you get to reach a kid in the ways they want and need to learn!! Connect the learning to Students passions!!
A2) I start with the state ELA standards as I start planning Cross-curricular lessons, good team collaboration is VERY helpful
This is what makes it meaningful!!! https://t.co/1JnIIw1rlW
A2 I also think it can be organic too...like when a student brings in his/her own passion into another class/subject!
Its a rounded version of the details. Helps them feel smart when they get what's being said and its not new https://t.co/KZIIc45AMe
A3: Students who like a specific subject can see how it applies in another curricular area.
Yes! Agreed! Or create spaces like where Ss can bring together different subjects to help them create!
A3: No more using the word 'connections' unless you can make it concrete. We're in the edu-speak ether here.
A3: Bring relevancy to all subject matter involved. Bring huge PBL projects to your school and incorporate all subjects
A3: It gets them thinking outside the box. Might surprise Ss that the SS T knows math and the math T knows SS. Connections!
A3 We don't live N silos. Why should we teach N them. Learning happens when Ss can make connections between learning opportunities
Sally Hoch, Belle Isle Enterprise MS, OKCPS. Loving meeting everyone tonight!
A3: Students get to learn in as real-life scenarios as possible. Learn cooperation and teamwork. https://t.co/J9nwxWaVhQ
Do we need to throw out "relevant" and "real-world," too?
A3: Excited Teacher leads to Excited Student. Project Based Learning Emerges naturally.
CCL comes about organically. Can't talk about rhythm w/o math, logic, patterns. Can't perform effectively w/o text analysis
a3: Benefits: S's may understand value of learning.. rather than learning bc a teacher told them to....
A3: Important to me is their experiencing that real situations deserving attention are cross-disciplinary. https://t.co/Snqdlqpj18
A3: Learning is about making connections, but with CCL you make those connections stronger & more realistic https://t.co/12Dp1P4Aux
A3 building connections from one subject to another. Building connections in thoughts.
I love being above the law.
Lol don't hate on "connections"...at least when I use it!
A3 As an engineer, my dh has to understand the mechanics of his equipment, and write manuals to explain it to others.
A3 Ss have the opportunity to put knowledge to work, apply critical thinking skills...
A3a Relevance, meaning.....Reality.
A1: isn't life "cross-curricular"? I try to show Ss ELA is useful in all areas of life because it's communication (everything is).
A1: incorporating other subject areas to make connections - easy to do with history, art, music for me; not so much with math
Another type of CCL, cross cultural learning. Students engage more when the work applies to their lives and their identities.
A3: I like to see students realize I know more than just music and they can, too. I use skills from other classes in my teaching
Hi. Brant from Wyoming. MS principal and late to the party
A3) Cross-curricular teaches students that subject ase not independent of one another
A2: teachers MUST collaborate and communicate effectively with leaders that support & encourage that https://t.co/OLfffIsWGP
This can be so powerful! Introducing Ss to other classrooms around the world is an eye-opening experience! https://t.co/GtfHyrja2a
Another type of CCL, cross cultural learning. Students engage more when the work applies to their lives and their identities.
A1: why does everything have to be a buzzword? Then we have to standardize & test & over-think & ....
When's the last time you (1)
A3: Maybe we should ask the students. Don't do CCL unless you follow it with reflections/evals to make it better.
A3b: More engagement, camaraderie with a fellow T, more opportunity, more fun...
A3 As a reporter, I had to understand how law, water plants, etc. worked -- & explain in writing at the 4th grade level. No jargon
A3B: A T can learn new things from other great Ts and breaks the school's Ts out of their silos
It helps people connect there connections, so that they will be connected... https://t.co/CKBnlZFLJn
A3: No more using the word 'connections' unless you can make it concrete. We're in the edu-speak ether here.
A3 Ss can grow closer to each other as they learn how to weave learning/content together.
and boy do we ever need more cross cultural learning in our schools and communities!
A3b opportunity for personal growth, learning, and collaboration!
"We need to use flipped, student-first strategies that engage the whole learner across Maslow's heirarchy critical thinking grit."
A3b: They get to work with other adults... a blessing and a curse... seriously, it makes us learn... lol https://t.co/XmMmYqPJtA
We can learn how to better connect subjects and teach them to students in ways that are effective for them to learn too
uhhhhhβ¦β¦.i connected the dots the other day from derivatives to integrationβ¦
A3b: reminds me of the big picture; I'm just one piece of it; we are teaching Ss HOW to think, not what to think
A3b: Because it gets you out of your room and out of your bubble.
A3b) helps you connect and get ideas from other ts
A2: A willing team is ideal. I do a lot on my own, but most of my colleagues are not able to collaborate bc of time, schedules, etc
A3b: Benefit=NEW plans. My laminated plans werent written to make "relevant connections to the real world." https://t.co/xYJ1Oj068o
A3 autonomy to choose to leave the scripted curriculum and be creative.
what if there is authentic real-world application?
A3b I think it's more engaging for Ss. Especially when you bring in the community and local businesses to be apart of the process!
Helping students make real-world connections across content areas in order to spark meaning
Q4b Can show Ss that Ts are multidimensional and also learners. My computer Ss always so surprised I knew about WW2
A3b: Teachers are bought in at the foundation with collaboration and planning.
It's amazing what we can learn from each other, isn't it? https://t.co/cXFyyCZEXR
A3b: Because it gets you out of your room and out of your bubble.
A3b: I think that great lessons happen when Ts really dig in and work together. Ts win, Ss win.
A3b If you are a self contained T you have more time to devote to one lesson when combining content areas and gr8er learning
A3b) The benefit for Ts in a CCL clsrm, when done with collaboration, is engagement that leads to enjoyment.
A3b: T's sometimes get stuck in their discipline. If T's start using CCL, there will be a better communication w/other disciplines.
3b - anytime t's work together - both have an opportunity to be better. .
A3b CCL is the fuel that powers T creativity.
A3 A big benefit of effective cross curricular learning can be higher levels of student engagement & "buy in" to the learning
THAT's concrete. You have permission to use the term
Can I just make a plug for teaching video game design? Talk about cross-curricular. Coding, math, art, writing, music, you name it!
3b) you get unstuck from your rut! And learn new things yourself. You learn how all Ts can support ea other to promote S learning
A3b: It is an exciting way to teach, engaging, go deeper
To Ss, "real world" is school. It's very relevant to them.We need to remember¬ try to make their world irrelevant.
A3(b): No more living on an island! Support & lean on one another. Give the S's an experience that encompasses multiple disciplines.
A3b) https://t.co/oczyInneXI
We can learn how to better connect subjects and teach them to students in ways that are effective for them to learn too
A3b: it gives teachers opportunity to get excited about teaching...you aren't going to put in the work if you are not interested
what are "Takis references?"
Can I have that written down and some PD points for it? https://t.co/zMW7HWEvyQ
THAT's concrete. You have permission to use the term
I'm excited for the chat! If I can learn on social media it totally justifies the useless hours.
Boom. https://t.co/D9rVuY6s0F
A3b: it gives teachers opportunity to get excited about teaching...you aren't going to put in the work if you are not interested
A3b: They can more easily get student engagement --> Facilitate improvement, not push starting! https://t.co/7cVrMtNqEM
A3: loving all math-science related activities. The more we can show kids how math is applicable, the better!
Teachers learning side by side with students, YES!
A4: Kids love music. Include music.
A3B: Getting to cooperate and learn with mad from other professionals. Breaks down communication barriers and builds culture.
yes you certainly can! Great ideas!!! Need more & lesson integration!
A4: My thoughts instantly go to Stem & engineering and how it integrates with math and geometry. But there are so many examples!
A4 The programming class and the art kids came together in a Video Game Design Club. Student led and student designed!
At Memorial - the English 3 AP class and AP U.S.History class combined to teach history & english. It was pretty
A4: Biggest impact was over something so small. "So, in English your T says to start your thesis THIS way..." They were stunned.
A4) We took a city issue, researched it, created graphs, looked at the science, debated, and presented our findings to the city.
A3b) See my answer to A3a. :) Ts learn as much as Ss do with these lessons, and are more engaged with their curriculum and their Ss.
Itentional instruction to create meaning across content areas; Ts collaborate 2 integrate disciplines into rich learning activities
A4: we did a cultural literacy unit tying decades from 60's, 70's, and 80's across our team https://t.co/oAEe6KSPpo
You'd think I'd told each of them what they had for breakfast then told them the 8 of spades was in their underwear.
I can make it real world easy, it's making it real world and hitting all the standards at the same time I struggle with.
A4: Just knowing similar / different w/ ELA writing was game-changing. I know that's simple and small, but...
A4: they liked this one: making a playlist for a literary character. More for MS, but could adapt to HS https://t.co/mHkSKOjfv2
A4: **Student run businesses/fundraisers** Math, Advertising, Speaking, Listening!
A4: had a great lesson engaging SS, math & ELA around buying thanksgiving dinners(including culture) https://t.co/jmtja61bm6
Loving these examples...keep 'em coming :)
A4: English & Physics-trebuchet launch party, observers, note-taking, write-ups
We did cross-curricular lessons aligned to a field trip to the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in KS. A day of learning.
It put a lock on the schedule - back to back classes. Iβm not sure it is still a thing. Super popular!
I need to connect you w at our school! She & I are co-teaching an afterschool club this fall
A4: I personally think coding should be required as another core subject in Oklahoma. :)
A4: I bring art and music in my classroom & S's love it but never another class. This is something that needs to change.
A4 https://t.co/spLEoCGclh
We did cross-curricular lessons aligned to a field trip to the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in KS. A day of learning.
3a&b: I think it can help with developing a common education language - we can use same terms and methods (NOT buzzwords, though π)
It's like we are all there doing the same thing... in a way... differently... but still the same...
Q4) One effective cross-curricular technique is to allow students to record their learning process digitally and collaboratively
I've seen that "lightbulb" look!
It could easily be considered a foreign language, couldn't it? https://t.co/3IzARQ2dcR
A4: I personally think coding should be required as another core subject in Oklahoma. :)
Last year brought STEM into his art class with a 3d printer! Ss designed a chess piece & printed it!
A4: English Ts, we have no excuse. It is one of our superpowers to link any content area's topic to a text. Let's do that more.
A4: The Dust Bowl Era: Social Studies, Science, literature, Math
A4 Wolves Unitβfairy tale, non fiction, Ss created related math story problem, even incorporated convo about perspective
A4: has great lesson w/ SS, math, ELA creating/shopping Thxgiving meals, including cultural diffs https://t.co/jmtja61bm6
A4) using 's drilling kits math T used mathematics/angles/pressure, I used human economic development https://t.co/FuBM8UmHHD
I can't decide if I want to steal all of your ideas or just insist that you all come teach with me!
A2: I ignore standards. Let the piece or lesson show me overlap. I do research. I have convos w/ Ts. Like actual life.
A4: 1) Math vocab tied into science to tch graphing. 2) Writing menus/cereal boxes to define science terms/concepts.
is so important! Let the problem solve and amaze you with what they can do!! https://t.co/ErZgo7T7rp
Q4) One effective cross-curricular technique is to allow students to record their learning process digitally and collaboratively
A1 Ts combining efforts and content areas; building bridges across a student's day
A4: Asking student teams to visit non-profits and defining a need and then addressing it!!! https://t.co/0bj1rOlo8O
A5: an open mind first of all.
A4 in Biotech I teach solution chem & stats; went to Ts, asked how do you teach this for consistency Ss noticed common lang=success
A5: The willingness and ability for Ts to talk to one another w/o insecurity AND willingness to set aside 'have to' sometimes.
Oklahoma/Pioneerβgreat way to tie in reading, social studies, and science
A4 treehouse challenge is a gr8 CCL lesson! https://t.co/W30vG6I9pl Geometry, writing, oral commun, & prob-solving!
At HS, Ss could include their analysis of why they chose the song.
A4: There's some pretty good video examples on The Teaching Channel - I get jealous of their opportunities for co-teaching
A4) We designed an outdoor classroom. Every time we worked on it, they hated to quit! They spent 2 hours measuring things one day!
A5: Be open and talk it out!
A5: First you need a door with an operable knob. Knock. Upon entering, say, "Hello, what are you teaching? Could we work together?"
A5: Great relationships. The willingness to work together, compromise, and craft a great product.
Trust - Admin needs to trust the Ts - the Ts need to trust each other - the students need to trust it.
https://t.co/c7jBDKTLbF
A2: honestly, I've yet to find many Ts willing to collab w/ me. But, I can read & research to work in as many areas as possible.
Yep. It really is that simple. https://t.co/6z9vaSOjIP
A5: First you need a door with an operable knob. Knock. Upon entering, say, "Hello, what are you teaching? Could we work together?"
Agree ... right and left side of brain discipline/experiences! https://t.co/t4LAjmlfpU
Can I just make a plug for teaching video game design? Talk about cross-curricular. Coding, math, art, writing, music, you name it!
A1) Life is cross-curricular.
Teaching w/this in mind will engage more students and deepen their learning. https://t.co/UbqGiDfoa6
A5: For me it was an anchor text, bring in other genres, then plan how other subjects related
A5 I think Ts don't have to be experts in everything, just have to be open to finding others and resources who/that can support Ss!
A5) Ts planning together. Reading "The Crucible" in ELA & learning McCarthyism is USH on their own isn't CCL https://t.co/Y7rkQgNhtx
A5: Can we get rid of some of this red tape/high stakes testing so we can get creative? Also, we have to keep learning and talking.
A4 Video interview w students last spring after Treehouse Challenge highlights the learning! https://t.co/gZQJACYTAP
A4: we talk about acoustical sciences. They are amazed the same concept that makes airplanes fly is how speech/singing works
Culinary Arts with Eastern Hemisphere Geo. great CCL.
It's a logistical challenge; caused exponential growth in AP involvement (all subjects) in our school.
I think people at Bleu Garten are talking more than tweeting! Hahahaha I know I would be!!! Lol
A4: student choice/voice was huge in the CCL's I've observed. If S's find ownership, they have control. https://t.co/0XaiGAxBNF
5) building relationships and a collaborative learning environment from day one, expectations
A5. Teamwork. Advanced planning. Time to plan. Did I mention teamwork? Not having constant turnover and turmoil in the profession.
We need to TRUST each other here. We all have great ideas that can support other curricular areas https://t.co/PKNELfeCSc
A5: The willingness and ability for Ts to talk to one another w/o insecurity AND willingness to set aside 'have to' sometimes.
A5: a great team, have I mentioned how excited I am about my team this year??
A4: taught a lesson last year on "Math in Music" - talked about ratios, rhythms, all sorts of connections...
A5) Pieces for CCL include a plan for the subjects to include and what level of mastery is acceptable for each subject.
A4: biology, too. We talk A LOOOOOOOOT about breathing, specifically diaphragmatic vs costal breathing.
A5 cont) ELA & USH Ts collaborating to make connections & explore other "witch hunts" gives greater meaning https://t.co/Y7rkQgNhtx
A5: **Collaborative school culture** Admin support to encourage, pursue & celebrate CCL.
A5) Foundations of order. These lessons should have more freedom for the kids, so they have to understand how to use that freedom.
A5 Time for planning, an open mind, willingness to learn new things, ability to incorporate standards in meaningful way...
This is where we need to get out of our silos, right? https://t.co/vEo3Jotedt
A2: honestly, I've yet to find many Ts willing to collab w/ me. But, I can read & research to work in as many areas as possible.
A4: Tchr: patience, willing to let go, talk/collaborate w/ other subject tchrs, step back and punt w/o feeling hurt.
A5: We have built in time for our Ts to meet at the grade level and subject area
HEY! YOU BLEU GARDEN FOLKS! STOP TALKING TO EACH OTHER AND PLAY ON YOUR DEVICES - WE'RE TRYING TO HAVE AN CHAT HERE!
A5 continue Luckily I have all 3
And it requires leaving your classroom and walking down the hall... https://t.co/mWHnid6WnC
A5: First you need a door with an operable knob. Knock. Upon entering, say, "Hello, what are you teaching? Could we work together?"
https://t.co/GE1ay87x8k
A5 I think Ts don't have to be experts in everything, just have to be open to finding others and resources who/that can support Ss!
I'm here! I'm here! I'm in the corner with my nose buried in the laptop...
A5: open-mindedness/mind shift, creativity, SUPPORT, ideas(from Twitter?),more than Pinterest crafts(sorry) https://t.co/YzjG6elbGN
A5: besides teacher willingness, clear objectives are needed. WHY draw a picture/play a song/make a video/etc.
re: Wolvesβfairy tale, non fiction, Ss created related math story, incorporated convo about perspective > Excellent!
A6: time. But we went to 4 day week so I may have plenty of time now. π
A5 Make sure you are not the smartest person in the room when you begin developing CCL
A5: CCL requires time and food, preferably both provided by admin. Always looking for time! https://t.co/yBtYyRmXcj
Strong T's with an inordinate amount of time to plan, then time/freedom to execute.
A6 Toughest challenge: Having to step back and punt in the middle of a lesson because you didn't foresee a difficulty.
A6 I think time can be an issue. Especially when there is a lot of content to cover.
A5: Clear objectives and measurable expectations w/ opportunities to reflect on their learning . https://t.co/7hAgooV8pz
A5: Teachers giving up control of efforts made and students need to have questions with which they identify! https://t.co/5aZrquyO8T
A3: love when Ss tell me I've ruined their lives because they can't do anything w/out looking for connections or analyzing.
A5: a willingness to do it in the 1st palce A clear outcome is useful, making sure all are on the same page. https://t.co/0eLTN5M5qQ
A6 Another tough challenge: Coming up with ideas when your brains are oozing out of your ears in mid-November...
A6: Time. I just want to sing songs and have fun.
6) All the little things, RSAs, testing, schedule interruptions, ... excuses
A6: The temptation to take a good idea and make it a program.
A6a) Getting Ts time to plan
A6a: Finding time. A music T started in Sept last year. Stated desire to collaborate in a meeting. Never did. Missed opportunity.
A6a) rigid curriculum calendars that don't allow Ts flexibility; "this must be taught here" mentality https://t.co/H6i9EukmPu
A6: Need Ts & Admins to see more examples of CCL successfully implemented.
A6: We have so many mandates legislated at us w/ a promise of an evaluation. How can we feel free to explore under these conditions?
A6: It's difficult. Rethinking your approach is hard and requires more work. Ideas are creative in nature and out of the box.
A5: TBH, it just happens. The kids are like, "here we go again on how music is math..." "Why do we have to understand the text?"etc
A6 Relevance. Make sure you aren't combining things just to check a box. Does it make sense to link two concepts together?
A6: CCL is harder in a larger school. Scheduling is trickier, students don't share as many Ts, etc.
Not sure - I know there are some βbabyβ game development things at Francis Tuttle.
Q4 Eng 2 & World Hist. Started the convo in Eng abt local social justice issues & expanded to global; created PSAs on social media
Overarching themes, time per's: Ss learn lit, science, music, math, art of a time's culture
Time! Have suggested block scheduling more than once to admin team as they draw master schedule.
A6: But in reality it just kind of happens in my classroom.
I don't know... but I can share some online resources that she could get started with, if you want?
that's when you follow the ideas of students.π
A5 The space and time for Ss to realize the soft skills may have been part of (if not most important) lesson
A6a: Time and willing to plan. But if you are willing you are half way there
A6) Me and my ignorance! As Eng T, I don't always think, "Oh this book would be perfect for their latest choir song or science lab!"
How long until all of goes to a 4 day week? Sure haven't heard much movement on next year's $600M deficit have we?
A6: Time to get everything organized... Also making curriculum maps line up...
A6: Making sure it is relevant, meaningful
re: ... need more coding & lesson integration! > of education is crucial!
A6: Resources. More mandates. Less resources. How can Ts use CCL when Ts are cleaning their rooms & pulling duty in multiple areas?
I'm pretty sure "program" is a buzzword. https://t.co/ttLh2gsQaK
A6: The temptation to take a good idea and make it a program.
Collaborative norms foe T's and respect 4 how content areas are not interdependent in real life
For my 2nd plug of the night, teaching Ss design thinking can help them come up with their own CCL ideas so you don't have to do it!
A6: time. There's always a deadline looming. Stifles creativity at times
if CCL was clearly embedded as significant component of school's culture size wouldn't matter; sad it's not
A6: Ts feel like there's only time to learn something if it's in the ever-shifting state standards. Afraid to learn just to learn
Same here. Not really in my job description, though. https://t.co/6yJVFTRVNO
A6: Time. I just want to sing songs and have fun.
A6 Ts must be on same page & must have equal buy in. We had a few growing pains π Also, the CCL needs to make sense in both courses
Yes! A culture of teachers sharing and reflecting together. https://t.co/Z6C1aCodLl
Collaborative norms foe T's and respect 4 how content areas are not interdependent in real life
A6) it takes time and organization to integrate logically
New standards will pose a Hill to climb. And limited resources due to cuts.
Don't miss this link! has given us the plan. I'm going crazy with ideas about creating Playlists! https://t.co/WT81IuHSmG
A4: they liked this one: making a playlist for a literary character. More for MS, but could adapt to HS https://t.co/mHkSKOjfv2
I sure there are music Ts that you let you come play every once and while! Looking at you
A6 Always a balancing act...standards, meaningful content, teach, facilitate, create, evaluate...
A6b Burning the box down to ashes
Literature is often reflective of the politics & cultural environment of any period, indicative of a movement or sentiment
A6b: If you aren't having fun you know the kids aren't having fun and learning. Just saying!
A6b) it would help to have common plan time devoted to developing CCL plans
Thx! We loved it! Thoroughly enjoyed being in Durant with so many districts represented from SE OK. https://t.co/Rl16e1eX4h
Thank you to you and your staff and Durant H.S. for a great
A6b I think letting go of the idea of survey courses... Quality is more important that quantity...
At the risk of derailing, I'd like to ask the newby Ts and others new to the chat to PLEASE feel free to jump in and share?
A6: just need GOOD teachers willing to work hard & work together for positive change in this & every regard https://t.co/iropFMG5Bu
Every time I hear the word rigor, I think of rigor mortis...
Policy - teachers involved in policy. Also - teachers willing to step out of the box for their students. https://t.co/gnAj6Bkap8
A6(b) Give educators a voice regarding legislation. Ts and Administrators need to seek out innovation. Learn. And be willing to try!
A6 cont...This was our 2nd yr for this particular project. We relied on our fabulous media specialists to help us see big picture
A6b: another T in my dpt; I'm guessing given the budget, cloning is a more realistic option...
A6b: Just willing to try something new & have an open mind it might not go as plan, but those are the best https://t.co/GOQYYskBm6
A6b) cooperation and collaboration among teachers and admin, the freedom to be flexible
A6b: Definitely make the connection with that T and see what happens...it seems silly in retrospect to not have connected.
There are no wrong answers in - I'm the only real jerk here, and I'm nice to the baby Ts most of the time.
A6. Willing collaboration.
Ts able to step out of their box w/o getting fired or uninvited to their school.
A6b) A school climate that was not so driven by test score results; The unfortunate victim of HST https://t.co/exUk8EdPW5
A6b) Time is difficult to overcome if Ts and Admin don't prioritize collaboration between Ts.
Students can learn to look at text w/mindset of "connectedness": how does this relate 2 what else was happening in world?
A6 we need more professional autonomy as educators, & for schools. Let our diverse creativity thrive! Empower instead of standardize
A6 While it's nice to have collaboration w/ other Ts...if you don't have it, don't let it stop CCL...look outside to the community!
, with a dance! That would get us started off on the right feet!
But we can do this - its totally possible! Especially when Ss still perform on HST https://t.co/ns6fuqO09o
Ts able to step out of their box w/o getting fired or uninvited to their school.
and TRUST among all involved! https://t.co/ns6fuqO09o
Ts able to step out of their box w/o getting fired or uninvited to their school.
This is so true. It doesn't need to be a huge project from the start. Let other Ts see you having fun. https://t.co/vc0vdkQcxp
Whoa. Great way to look at it. https://t.co/TQU8EBOHmh
Every time I hear the word rigor, I think of rigor mortis...
Yes!! Getting excited for this first meeting https://t.co/lITyrNVokq
, with a dance! That would get us started off on the right feet!
A7: American History & American Lit / AP Language and Financial Lit / Biology & Chemistry
re: gives teachers opp to get excited about teaching ... > True for all disciplinesβreminds me of: https://t.co/iplwsF8336
A6) biology and health we don't know enough about our bodies apparently or our natural systems
A6b: Lots of communication with parents during school year; and initiate communication w/ school board. https://t.co/C4CNBZ4FVJ
A7) Building vocab by all studying the same Greek/Latin roots in Eng Sci Math and Geo. Ss magically forget them from class to class.
A7) I would like to focus more on science with an ELA lens and making global connections
That's because Mid-Del is awesome! :D
A7: can we PLEASE incorporate Arts (music, drama, theater, etc) more! Where my creatives at!? https://t.co/6noRznPXBi
A7 I want to incorporate more music and art both have strong connections to other subjects!π
A7: can we bring back things like auto shop?!? Let Ss who can work with their hands expand their minds. CCL enhances those subjects.
A7 I would love to see Ss actually tackling real-world problems and designing solutions!
A7 I love combining art/history/music/architecture with the literature the kids are studying. It all happened at the same time...
Come on y'all, the water is fine. If I can join in, you can! π https://t.co/ClHOBO9Ghq
At the risk of derailing, I'd like to ask the newby Ts and others new to the chat to PLEASE feel free to jump in and share?
A7: History of Mathematics in HS lesson. Maybe S's would have a better understanding where math originated https://t.co/DrcWF0ORsu
A7) I would love to see our science and ELA depts work together on a CCL.
A7: I think everyone would have something to contribute about current political climate, no matter the subject area- Ss & Ts alike!
A7 I want to explore more uses of digital interactive writing across the curriculum with other teachers https://t.co/o4R9LIYkYf
I feel admins need to let Ts fail, too. First Attempt In Learning not just for kids if we want risk
A7) https://t.co/g0M54FrQbr
A6) biology and health we don't know enough about our bodies apparently or our natural systems
Reading across all curriculums.
Love this idea! It'd be great to see what you come up with.
, I have a car I'm willing to donate.
even if the year ends in a colossal mess - learning will still have occurred. probablyβ¦
A7-We plan to implement instructional rounds for the first time at BAHS. I would love to see a CCL movement from these observations
A7 I would like all teachers to explore integrating art and music into instruction - at all grade levels. https://t.co/Coymw43NXv
A good place to start is or
EXACTLY! How can "I" learn if I can't make mistakes?! https://t.co/i8I05vWpNY
I feel admins need to let Ts fail, too. First Attempt In Learning not just for kids if we want risk
A7) an easy way to start: simple school wide theme ("justice" "exploration" etc) & each class emphasize it. https://t.co/9CQC28RCs8
... Wish I could hit the like button a bunch more times!
A7) science and social justice, govt, law making
A7 cont: Rhetoric, history repeating itself, dystopian novels, eugenics, policy, "The Producers", etc. etc. etc.
A7) I've used arts integration successfully for years. Love it!
A7 Our APUSH and Jazz Band have an awesome CCL prj. re: Harlem Renaissance. I'd love to work with Perf. Arts for World History. πΆπΉπ€
I was a super creative student & felt so out of place in our athletically driven schools...wish to change! https://t.co/L0KBByHQY4
I totally agree....I teach a bunch of band kids and am one myself....I love using music in my class!
A7) Science! And sewing, and photography, and...
Instructional Rounds was a "game changer" in my previous district. GOOD STUFF!
A7 Math and history, which will incorporates literacy. I like to show Ss that math isn't something that I devised to torment them...
How awesome is that??? https://t.co/kk26JV4gzE
A7 Our APUSH and Jazz Band have an awesome CCL prj. re: Harlem Renaissance. I'd love to work with Perf. Arts for World History. πΆπΉπ€
A7: want my students to understand and connect better to the text in their repertoire & want to explore historical context more
A7: Countries: literature, genres, social studies, math, science
https://t.co/E5UBXW7Wca
I feel admins need to let Ts fail, too. First Attempt In Learning not just for kids if we want risk
not every student in a high school needs to be in a high school. we need to support other options for them
Failure is effective lrning as long as it is acknowledged and Ts & Ss look for fixes together
There should be a place for ALL of our kids and their interests! https://t.co/BlXDJgz08N
I was a super creative student & felt so out of place in our athletically driven schools...wish to change! https://t.co/L0KBByHQY4
I totally agree....I teach a bunch of band kids and am one myself....I love using music in my class!
A8a: How do I integrate it organically, instead of it just being thrown in for the hell of it? https://t.co/s1ZQaBB9pK
More learning will occur in the mess than in a sterile, rigormortis environment... https://t.co/zyxVm4sVVx
even if the year ends in a colossal mess - learning will still have occurred. probablyβ¦
Amen ππ½ https://t.co/uSUqoHDHhi
A7 Math and history, which will incorporates literacy. I like to show Ss that math isn't something that I devised to torment them...
Edtech makes these options a very real possibility https://t.co/Jv1PqSVBlH
not every student in a high school needs to be in a high school. we need to support other options for them
I'm thinking about teaching Oklahoma History entirely through interpretive dance this semester - does that count?
Im serious about the car. 1997 Mustang, if they want it.
A8: What schools are killing it with CCL in Oklahoma?!? Can I come visit your school??
I have a dream of having Ss create their own virtual reality content for student-designed lessons...
You also have to reflect on your failure, propose changes, and TRY AGAIN! https://t.co/P1MqlHIrnL
Failure is effective lrning as long as it is acknowledged and Ts & Ss look for fixes together
Agree. Consumerization of IT & have changed the game. But, collaboration & community matter! https://t.co/Tt7dLtJriQ
Only if you video and share.
None of the others matter if they can't read it.
'Wrong' answers are just the first attempt leading to useful answers (can not know if any answer is correct) https://t.co/awyf2cypAJ
There are no wrong answers in - I'm the only real jerk here, and I'm nice to the baby Ts most of the time.
I'll definitely share, focused on our student info system transition now but that's my next priority!
A8) can you do it on your own? Anything is relatable? Is that the genuine principle??
A8a: knowing who to approach as a collaborative partner and how to go there with him/her. This requires some confidence.
good question! Can I hitch a ride with you? I'd love to see what other people are doing!
Have your student create a song based on a math objective. then make a music video. They r so fun to watch https://t.co/3J13PMT6nY
A7 I would like all teachers to explore integrating art and music into instruction - at all grade levels. https://t.co/Coymw43NXv
W/ the recent βοΈ behind us, I'd like to see T's integrate skills& the arts into their lessons. https://t.co/TuaG5obCOk
Q8a: Which lesson would be the most effective for student learning? So many to think about.... https://t.co/5tk0LBvtBj
start by building on Ss interests, and their questions.
A8 To get started with CCL, brainstorm ideas...no idea is too crazy at this point! Then start looking at resources!
all of these https://t.co/3IrrKu8q1e
A8) can you do it on your own? Anything is relatable? Is that the genuine principle??
this has been an engaging & thought provoking chat . π€ I have to exit early π
A8a Yes, admin support is essential!! And I'm new but rec. staringt by brainstorming with your librarians if you're unsure!
could you please lead a Twitter chat on it... With gifs
A8a) Who will do this with me? Going it alone is never fun.
it does....I always started close to home, with someone nearby that i knew pretty well and had mentored me I some way.
A8b: Same advice as for everything else - Go With Your Gut. Don't worry about the doubters. Some stuff will work; some won't.
A8: Have fun! Like I said earlier if you aren't having fun, your students are not having fun.
Indeed. Innovation is making physical environments variable.
A8) Should Ts be assessed in CCL on TLE? What would the ramifications be? What does CCL look like for Admin? Asking for a friend.
A8: Make it meaningful. Ss can tell when buzzwords and trends are the purpose, but real CCL will make an impact.
8b: Plan, plan, then plan some more, be organized
A8b) accepting all advice
A8b) Start with what the kids are interested in. Use their hobbies. Help them find their passions.
A8b You may fail, but always fail forward
A8: DONT stop if it's unpopular (advice for almost anything actually..) we do it ALL for students https://t.co/zrh5vTDRaq
A8b: Seriously - no one else wants this job. So do it so it MATTERS and has meaning - they can't afford to fire you.
A8b) I'm all ears. Or any advice really
great chat! We love you!!!!
8b- Observe, ask questions, research. Then go try some things out! Don't be afraid to make mistakes...
Just try something people! Just Try!! https://t.co/H7jxzPALf1
A8b: Same advice as for everything else - Go With Your Gut. Don't worry about the doubters. Some stuff will work; some won't.
8b: 1) "borrow" the grd rubrics from other subj. T. 2) let the Ss do the work. 3) Let the Ss create within boundaries 4) Keep going
A8b It won't go perfectly. That's okay. Reflect and improve in the future!
Sorry I missed chat tonight! The heat got me! See you next week.
A8b) Don't be afraid to fail, change course in the middle, or recruit your Ss to help. Let the lesson dictate the solution-together
oh please make this happen ππ
no assessing here - lets build up a foundation and get buy in from all involved.
A8b) An engineer told us this weekend that he didn't study science and math to become an engineer. (Con't)
A8b: Don't be afraid to try stuff. Fear to try new things limits learning and growth of both Ts and Ss...
A8b) Find a partner in crime to work with. It's a great way to keep motivated even when things get messy and they will get messy!
A8(b) Keep an open mind. Be willing to try and fail and start again. Stay fresh & don't quit. Our kids are depending on you!!
i do know the footloose dance. I can teach you. Benefits of being in the
A8b Jump in! It will take time to get it right, but don't let that stop you. Go for it! It gives Ss new opportunities to learn!
A8b) He studied them because he wanted to build things. He learned because he needed to so he could do what he wanted.
Love your comment to include librarians!!! Such tremendous resources they are!
A8: use teachers of other subjects, don't pass on fixed mindsets (I'm no good at math so I don't teach it) https://t.co/zrh5vTDRaq
You may fail at first - but with practice and patience - you will do things! https://t.co/KuaVZNZdSb
A8b Jump in! It will take time to get it right, but don't let that stop you. Go for it! It gives Ss new opportunities to learn!
A8a: parent voice chiming in here. Maybe recruit parents or community volunteers to assist with CCL?
what an awesome chat and with such awesome people! Love my peeps! Thanks!
