Repetition of admin or data based tasks, duplicating information for the sake of it rather than collaborating effectively to ensure all are communicating about strategies that work for a child/class/cohort #UKEDchat
A1: exam syllabus changes every 2/3 years with text changes. As an English teacher, you don't even get chance to get to grips with the text and create useful resources for students before it's all change again #ukedchat
A1 writing ‘verbal feedback given’ or a stamp or code. Generally writing lengthy comments in books that kids don’t read annoys me - so glad we finally ate looking at a new marking policy!
#UKEdChat Q2
Do you consider yourself to be efficient in your teaching and admin? What things do you do which could be more efficient?

A2: I'd be efficient if my workplace would stop moving the goalposts! Tell us key dates at the very beginning. By all means remind us. But don't add in extra admin/data drops randomly throughout the year. #ukedchat
A2 planning & producing resources using standard templates that I know work saves me hours #ukedchat I'm sure if I knew how to use SIMs properly it could save me lots of work
#UKEdChat Q2 again

A2 I have a guitar in my room, culpable for all missing/late admin! On a serious note, being ruthless with my email inbox and deleting lots makes things much more manageable. #UKEdChat
A1 - All could have no impact if you don't fully engage and use effectively. I try to limit to what works for ME and MY PUPILS, I have to do policies and wonder who reads them. But understand it's to cover issues that might arise #ukedchat
A2 Yes, I am dyslexic and if I don't go over and above I fall into disorganisation. I have had to work hard on it since school. My old teacher files I had to do were mad with colours and tabs! #ukedchat
A2 think I generally work smart but takes me ages to do displays and then I’m often still disappointed at the end ... they’re just not my thing #UKEdChat
A3 Yes because I try and plan but sometime I use them to go to the toilet and get a drink, this can be as important as working hell for leather. Sometime I trade off time in non-contact to working in the evening as my mind's not in it. It's knowing how to read your mood #ukedchat
A3 Ours are spread throughout the week. Much better than all at once I find. Gives you chance to catch breath several times a week and if managed well I find it allows efficiency. #ukedchat
A3 My frees are all period 5 and generally not very productive or efficient as a result after a long day! I had the opposite last year, all period 1s, and I used the time much better. #UKEdChat

When it comes to efficiency, resources/templates are the trickiest kind. This is why we created the ‘Creative Persuasion Teacher Toolkit’. A resource that’ll give teachers the ability to throughly take creativity into the classroom. #UKEdChat

A2 admin wise I’m trying to just do what I need to do this year. Not get bogged down in thins that aren’t useful to the learning in my class. It’s working so far #UKEdChat
A3 - tidy up class, find somewhere to log in, solve a couple of urgent, not important issues (‘sir, can you get me that sheet from yesterday, etc.) decide what is next on the priority list, get focused, just start being productive...
RRRRIIIINNNNGGGGG...
#ukedchat
UkEdChat A1 In one school we were required to print out all our planning and resources (which was all on the computer and accessible by everyone) to put in a file. I refused to do something that was such a waste of time.
A3: We get 5 hours offsite time- I can do bank/dentist type stuff although it is meant to be admin time. I then use my lunch hour as half an hour eat at my desk and photocopying. I just feel more on top of things this way. Not great for catching up with colleagues tho #ukedchat
A2 - no chance, very rare that I am efficient... but you need to be because your teaching timetable is relentless and unforgiving. When you’ve got a lesson you have to go. Can’t think, ‘I’m in the zone, I’ll carry on’ #ukedchat
A3 I use lots of large models when teaching so I make lots of bits in my free periods when I get the chance. Usually most of my free periods however are used making sure the department is running well in terms of BFL and PGCE training #ukedchat
A3 A variety of different things - from forming relationships with local schools to resourcing lessons. I have learned to use my non contact time according to my needs. #UKEdChat
A4 Spend time to make sure you understand the data you work with - pays dividends in the end rather than sitting trying to figuring stuff out. Same for software, programs etc. if you can automate a process or think somebody might be able to help you - do it. #UKEdChat
A4 If you honestly think it's a waste of time, leave it. If its that important people will always ask again. It's amazing what people ask for then never check up on which proves it was pointless to start with🤫#ukedchat
#ukedchat q2. I like to think I’m efficient and have an old fashioned diary system that keeps me organised. I find when I mark in front of the computer I’m massively inefficient - I end up on amazon, YouTube. I always sit on a student desk to mark now @ukedchat
A4: For me Litdrive has been amazing just as Teachit was. Pre prepared but editable resources. No point in reinventing the wheel even with quizlet and kahoots! I also put everything on Google Classroom to reduce photocopying too (and future years planning)! #ukedchat
Q4. You know the things that don’t need to be done, that no one is going to ask for and that will have no impact. Don’t do them, spend your time on core business. #UKEdChat@ukedchat
A4 Plan, plan and plan again. Know what you are working with. I just did CPD on midyis and INCAS. Only now after 10 years! Secondary school teacher should be having this to aid with data analysis! If you know what you are looking at it saves time #ukedchat
#UkEdChat A4 Make the most of your TA in primary - if you are lucky enough to have one - and give them plenty of notice about what needs doing so that they can plan it into the week/term.
#ukedchat A5 I try and mark as much as I can in the lesson so chn get instant feedback and can act on it and my time spent marking books after school is significantly reduced
A5 Adapt existing resources as much as you can - share those within your faculty, school and externally so that others can benefit. Our faculty has a rudimentary(or often fully realised) lesson, resourced and ready for every topic we cover. Saves me so much time. #UKEdChat
A5 In writing get the children to self/peer assess using a checklist and underline the features in different colours so you can spot easily what they've got when marking. #ukedchat
A5: Think about the work you are setting carefully...can it be self marked by them or even better done via technology such as Google forms to save you marking then transferring marks etc. Get them to do most of the qorknrather than everything being you! #ukedchat
A5: Think about the work you are setting carefully...can it be self marked by them or even better done via technology such as Google forms to save you marking then transferring marks etc. Get them to do most of the work rather than everything being you! #ukedchat
A2 On the whole not bad with admin because I am good at prioritising. Sharing resources as a year group can help efficiency (but adapted to your class). #UKEdChat
Top time-saving teacher tip- design/create learning environments WITH your pupils as an art project-added bonus of pupils having a sense of ownership and pride in their classrooms. A5 #ukedchat
Q5 Best thing I have done is make booklets with PPTs. This means all my planning is done for the year and printing done. You can turn up any time to a lesson and it's planned and resourced with starters, extensions, G&T tasks, SEND tasks. No panicking for photocopier! #ukedchat
A3 I have an afternoon of release for leadership responsibilities and SLT meeting. Very useful for sharing info and discussing any issues. Every other week I have a PPA day which works really well as I can work from home with no interruptions etc. #UKEdChat
#UkEdChat A5 Share all resources and ideas. In maths, get pairs of pupils to work on A3 sheet when working on longer problems/reasoning activities and then mark that sheet, and copy/reduce for each child. Organise classroom so pupils know where everything is and have monitors!
A2 Time management- I do 12 hours at school most days (personal preference), but the key is to not clock watch. Mark, plan, teach, admin. Listing priorities result in less rework and mistakes. When you know what you need to do, you waste less time in idle activities. #UKEdChat
A5 I've tried marking writing using #seesaw. it isn't vastly quicker for me but I believe it is done in more depth & more effective. Do have to listen to my own voice though 😫 #ukedchat
A4 Ask chn to leave books open to the page you need to mark. Develop good habits with your class so they tidy up properly (so you don't have to). Share resources where possible. #UKEdChat
A6. We’ve started working on Google Docs. Collab documents are so much easier when you’re working in real time and not waiting for them to emailed back and forth. #UKEdChat
A5 Try to intervene with a child whose struggling in lesson time for more of an immediate impact than leaving it until someone is available to do 1:1 intervention. Get chn into routines with helping give out books etc makes things easier for you. #UKEdChat
A6. Three things for effective time management in meetings.
1. An effective chair person
2. An effective chairperson
3. An effective chairperson #UKEdChat
A5. Pre-empt mistakes. I put all capital letters in a different colour in my presentations to make them stand out to students. They've stopped making mistakes with capital letters which has saved me about 30mins per class set every fortnight when marking. #ukedchat
A5. Set homework tasks that involve little/no marking. Setting revision and then having an in class quiz that students can mark themselves can save a lot of time #ukedchat
A7 use feedback, not marking. Make them understand the process. A lot of my first DIRT lessons are explaining what it is and why. Also let them know it's OK to fail at first. If they don't learn to fail might not be efficient learners #ukedchat
A7 I give mine the copy of the scheme of learning so they are aware of what's happening when (approx). I give them mock & assessments dates in advance. Homework is on Google Classroom with reminders. No surprises so no excuses! I am FE tho #ukedchat
When writing, star a ‘writing goal’ in the margin and slowly increase it over time so we can encourage pupils to manage their time more effectively and build stamina- A7 #ukedchat
A7. I always set clear time limits when I set them off to work. I also make sure that 5 minutes means 5 minutes and not 5 teacher minutes (which can range between 2mins and 10mins 😬😂) #UKEdChat
One piece of advice I’d give all teachers, new or not new. Learn to say no. You don’t have to be rude and if you can help, do. But kindly say you can’t if you’re buried in it. It will help maintain your sanity. #UKEdChat
#UkEdChat A7 Give fairly tight timescales for tasks and in groups give roles to each member of the group including timekeeper. Be strict about what stationary they can bring to school - no one needs two pencil cases full of smelly pens and no writing pencils!
A4. Having folders in my email account so that I can categorise everything and then deal with each thing accordingly in an appropriate time scale #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A6: Divide responsibility for SOWs between teachers so each teacher designs lessons and resources for one year group and shares. Individuals free to adapt of course!
A8 Share, share, share. How many teachers in your school have made the same resource because they didn’t ask someone if they had one already? #UKEdChat
A7 Stop parents doing everything for them. Make pupils responsible for packing their own bags/equipment etc. That way pupils know where everything is and stop rummaging for the basic equipment, thus saving frustration and precious learning time. #ukedchat
A8 Make sure deadlines for necessary paperwork is set ahead of time so staff know when it is due. Focus on teaching and learning which is truly important. #UKEdChat
A7: I've been using whole class feedback as a PPT in conjunction with green box marking. Students then see which aspect matches their work and they revise only their mistake/errors during the 10 min DIRT. I then remark that section with a different colour! #ukedchat
#UkEdChat A8 Schools need a strong and confident SLT who protect staff time by refusing to impose unnecessary admin duties on staff and not allowing unreasonable access to parents when they demand it - either in person or electronically.
A8 - help provide time for important things. Sometimes you might have to insist that a particular time slot is for important things. Teachers, being humans, will often focus on urgent, unimportant things. #ukedchat
#ukedchat A5:
Live Marking
Whole Class Marking
Crib sheets (can be used time and time again to check for improvements)
Instant feedback with students self-correcting (I prefer a diff colour pen - makes them accountable)
#ukedchat A3 at our school, we have ppa every day for the last half an hour while the children are In assembly. Took some getting used to but I get most of my marking done. It's not very useful for a planning session though it's good if you need to talk to a colleague.
A8: digital collaboration. Reduces opportunities to digress (moan) and things can happen in almost real time or during time when teacher's can spare 5 mins here and there. This allows teacher's to focus on teaching/prepping rather than another meeting #ukedchat
A7 I’ve spent time this year working on editing and redrafting work. It’s taken longer but the work has had so much more purpose and it’s shown in the written results. As much as it takes time I’d still say they’re using it efficiently and it has so much value #UKEdChat
