Yahoo! While that's nice we are more focused on sleep training first and self-soothing. We don't mind the once a night he gets up currently. But I'd be happy with full nights again. #IDedchat

  • WinkelerD Jan 31 @ 10:09 PM EST

So HOW can social media help with parent communication? How do you get Parents to follow you? #IDedchat
    In reply to @goodn3rd
  • LCHS_Bio Jan 31 @ 10:09 PM EST
R1: social media is a great way to share activities taking place in the classroom in real time with stakeholders of the school. It’s also a great way to share good news. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Jan 31 @ 10:10 PM EST
Crazy! They were calling for measurable snow today/tomorrow, but yet in true St. Louis fashion it was sunny and 60 today and then 30s tomorrow. #IDedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio
  • travislape Jan 31 @ 10:10 PM EST
A1: we need to share our stories otherwise someone else will and it wont be the message we want. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Jan 31 @ 10:10 PM EST
This is interesting - we will explore this idea of engaging students on a deeper level in a while. #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD
  • polonerd Jan 31 @ 10:11 PM EST
A1: SM allows the school to share their story and model good digital citizenship for their Ss & families. #IDedchat

It's going well. Will be wrapping up the research portion in the next few months, and then just have to write the last few chapters this summer. Light at the end of the tunnel is near. #idedchat
    In reply to @polonerd
  • averyteach - Moderator Jan 31 @ 10:12 PM EST
So....social media is a great communication tool. BUT.... #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Jan 31 @ 10:12 PM EST
Q2: If you build it ... will they come? How do you get parents and students to engage with your chosen social media platform(s)? #IDedchat
  • travislape Jan 31 @ 10:12 PM EST
I also think we need to be BOLD! Here is a glimpse into my district being BOLD https://t.co/4jYFgdrLnt #IDedchat
  • polonerd Jan 31 @ 10:13 PM EST
Great to hear. As long as the light at the end of the tunnel isn't a train. #IDedchat

A1.5 The schools can push notifications to all in a manner they are becoming more accustomed to, instead of hoping parents remember to look at the website. #Idedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • LCHS_Bio Jan 31 @ 10:13 PM EST
R1: we have to communicate in ways that our stakeholders do. And this means all different tools. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Jan 31 @ 10:14 PM EST
A2: Make it something accessible that all can have access to without having to really pay for it. #idedchat
  • goodn3rd Jan 31 @ 10:14 PM EST
    A2 Extra credit in class. #Sarcasm #IDedchat
  • keefe67 Jan 31 @ 10:14 PM EST
A2: for parents I actually use Remind, more private. I tell them that is my preferred communication tool, and I can respond quicker than anything else. #IDedchat
  • travislape Jan 31 @ 10:14 PM EST
A2: we can’t force them to use our platform of choice. We must go to them. With the power of tech today you can post to several platforms. #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Jan 31 @ 10:14 PM EST
R2: not your media, their media. It may mean using Facebook, Twitter, email, Instagram, SnapChat, etc. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Jan 31 @ 10:14 PM EST
A2: Meet them where they are. If they are invested in Twitter for example, then USE IT to your advantage. #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Jan 31 @ 10:14 PM EST
WOW! What an incredible journey Travis! Tell us a little about your first steps on this journey. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Jan 31 @ 10:15 PM EST
    He he he... #IDedchat
    In reply to @goodn3rd
  • travislape Jan 31 @ 10:15 PM EST
Whatever you do you must post frequently otherwise they will stop looking for it. Be consistent in sharing. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Jan 31 @ 10:16 PM EST
Totally agree. Travis - do you use a specific tool to post to multiple platforms at once? #IDedchat
    In reply to @travislape
  • travislape Jan 31 @ 10:17 PM EST
It started 7 years ago with our high school. I have been on this journey now for 4 years. Two of which was research and the last two helping implement at the Elementary level. Incredible journey! #idedchat

    In reply to @polonerd
  • polonerd Jan 31 @ 10:17 PM EST
We focus more on Facebook with our 'more experienced' alumni & parents, and Instagram, Twitter & SnapChat w/ current students. #IDedchat
    In reply to @travislape
  • averyteach - Moderator Jan 31 @ 10:17 PM EST
Q3: What things should you post? Give some specifics.... #IDedchat
  • travislape Jan 31 @ 10:17 PM EST
Me personally I use twitter. Our district is looking at a program called appegy I believe. #idedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • LCHS_Bio Jan 31 @ 10:18 PM EST
R2: I post on twitter occasionally. In all seriousness, I send out a weekly email to my Ss and Ps. That way they know what to expect the next week. Use Remind when we have projects or assessments coming up. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Jan 31 @ 10:18 PM EST
A3: District posts scholarship opportunities, upcoming events, school cancellations. Anything that would be sent in a letter or e-mail, it ends up on social media. #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Jan 31 @ 10:18 PM EST
It is definitely important to know your audience - who is the post for? #IDedchat

  • averyteach - Moderator Jan 31 @ 10:19 PM EST
Absolutely - this goes with telling the "story" of your school. #IDedchat
  • polonerd Jan 31 @ 10:19 PM EST
Does anybody have a solid replacement for Storify? Great way to capture posts w/ school # and then share w/ parents, but it's going away SOON. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Jan 31 @ 10:19 PM EST
A3: I personally have created a school # to increase student, teacher, and administrator communication. It has also served as my replacement for Remind 101 #idedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Jan 31 @ 10:20 PM EST
R3: I like sharing student centered activities where exploration and collaboration take place. #IDedchat

R3: This is something that I’m not sure about, but should you tweet things where Ss are struggling? Transparent? Authentic learning event? #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Jan 31 @ 10:21 PM EST

    Q4: OOOPS #IDedchat
  • polonerd Jan 31 @ 10:26 PM EST
Amazing how fast it changes isn't it. Most of our Ss wouldn't be caught dead on Facebook. They're there because it's the 21st century phonebook #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Jan 31 @ 10:28 PM EST

    In reply to @polonerd

I think teens see Snapchat as a replacement for texting & streaks - more than our definition of SM. #IDedchat

    #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD

This is an honest question. Do other professions use Twitter to grow personally/professionally the way educators do?? #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • WinkelerD Jan 31 @ 10:39 PM EST
A7: Odds are there is someone else on Twitter that you can collaborate with. Best place to PLC #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Jan 31 @ 10:40 PM EST
You know....I do not know the answer to that. I know that other professions (business) host "twitter parties" to launch new ideas, etc. But I'm not sure about learning. #IDedchat
    In reply to @nick_schumacher
  • WinkelerD Jan 31 @ 10:40 PM EST
Haha no problem. Clearly I have had some time to think of all of these throughout the year as it's been some of the PD I have provided to my Ts. #idedchat

  • nick_schumacher Jan 31 @ 10:44 PM EST
