Q1: What is your most powerful take away from the Innovatorās Mindset? Give an example of how Innovatorās Mindset changed how you are teaching. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A1: Innovator's mindset has given me the courage to change the way I do things in my classroom! I focus more on how the students are learning versus what grade I am putting in the grade book. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A1: A powerful take away from the #InnovatorsMindset is a need for a culture shift. A traditional school culture simply doesn't fit. Staff must be open to embracing change and taking risks.
#jwmsstaffinnovates
A1: Changing your mindset can be incredibly powerful. I've really appreciated the school wide support of trying new things at J-WMS and it has transformed my teaching this year and last. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A1: For me the biggest takeaway has been the concept that students should be more curious when they leave your class than when they entered. It has challenged me to develop better, more authentic assignments. @KGT_Educator@ERobbPrincipal@gcouros#jwmsstaffinnovates
A1: Page 8..."the Magical House" analogy >> What is in front of us is the whole world. It's almost as if we are at the doorstep of greatness...all that we need to do is open the door and walk in. Manifest Destiny! Anything is possible, but are you willing?
#jwmsstaffinnovates
A1: #InnovatorsMindset has changed the way I interact with colleagues. Since they too have read the book, all are more open to trying new things and taking the same risk we hope to empower our students to take on their way to innovation.
#jwmsstaffinnovates
A1: My biggest take away from I.M. is that no student is the same and they need space to grow, take risk, fail, and learn at a pace they own. #jwmsstaffinnovates
Hi #jwmsstaffinnovates I'm Jori from Northern CA and I teach English 10 and AP Lang and Lit! Sorry to drop in a little late - went to the wrong hashtag :) Excited to chat with you!
A1. There are so many. But having kids discover problems and create assessments based on problem-finding rather than answer finding is a big one. Ss need to develop critical thinking by analyzing & finding problems to solve. Let them lead. #jwmsstaffinnovates
History class is one of the most natural places for innovation, don't you think? So many connections to make and big issues to tackle... #jwmsstaffinnovates
A2: Innovative teachers are passionate, creative, and risk takers. They have to think outside of the box. Being innovative is answering questions that most likely havenāt been asked yet. #JWMSstaffinnovates
A2: A teacher who is not afraid to try new things or is not afraid to admit the practices they have had in the past simply do not work or are outdated. Being able to be honest with ones self.
#jwmsstaffinnovates
A2: Willingness to take risks and try new things w/out fear of failure - beyond that, ability to see failure as a learning experience. #JWMSstaffinnovates
A2: Innovative teachers are student-centered people who are unafraid to fail forward fast in order to provide the best for each their students every day. #JWMSstaffinnovates
A2: Innovative teachers are not only okay with challenges and change but embrace and welcome them. Innovative teachers learn alongside their students allowing guidance to flow both ways.
#jwmsstaffinnovates
A2: I think a hunger for learning and a desire to develop meaningful instruction to students. As innovators we want to do more than "make a collage." We want to think outside the box! #jwmsstaffinnovates
A1: I think for me, a school and thereby its leadership has to be ready to embrace change and growth. They need to be ready for some ideas/concepts to fail and thus be a learning experience. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A2: an innovative teacher is one who is always willing to try new ideas and is always thinking of ways to better the learning experience for the students. #jwmsstaffinnovates
History class is one of the most natural places for innovation, don't you think? So many connections to make and big issues to tackle... #jwmsstaffinnovates
A2: The innovative teacher never rests. He/she is always looking at the situation/project outcome and finding ways to make it better, faster, louder, messier, bigger, more global, etc. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A2: An innovative teacher is one who listens more than they speak, tries again when they don't get it the first time, and is committed to the growth of others around as much as they are their own growth. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A2: innovative teachers arenāt afraid to think outside the box. They are creative, a little quirky, and inventive! So necessary to be like this if we want our students to be innovative too! #jwmsstaffinnovates
A2: Innovative teachers are not only okay with challenges and change but embrace and welcome them. Innovative teachers learn alongside their students allowing guidance to flow both ways.
#jwmsstaffinnovates
A1 - An innovative teacher is willing to take risks - understands that if every day is an experiment, there are no failures -and passes this spirit on to students #jwmsstaffinnovates
A2: The innovative teacher never rests. He/she is always looking at the situation/project outcome and finding ways to make it better, faster, louder, messier, bigger, more global, etc. #jwmsstaffinnovates
Using students interests to design engaging, rigorous activities that incorporate real-world skills. We are preparing our students to be productive adults! We have to be innovative. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A2: An innovative teacher is one who listens more than they speak, tries again when they don't get it the first time, and is committed to the growth of others around as much as they are their own growth. #jwmsstaffinnovates
Isnāt it funny how so many of our Ss want to be with the innovators? I think it is because we desire to show our personality and grow with them to give them the best. #JWMSstaffinnovates
A3: Personalized learning, #PBL (performance, project and problem based learning), #geniushour, #20%time, collaboration (world-wide), and more are things I would look to see in classrooms facilitating innovation.
#jwmsstaffinnovates
A3: Loud and messy, just like #122recap. But within the noise, you hear students actually talking about what they're doing - the science behind the fun. #JWMSstaffinnovates
A3: I think we would see teachers who are engaging students in 21st century skills. We are trying to create an atmosphere of risk-taking and critical thinking. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A3: Innovation looks like students and teachers using the content to explore their voice & choice as they collaboratively create personalized learning experiences allowing each learner to meet success. #JWMSstaffinnovates
Q3-A3
We see non-traditional use of space, collaboration , creative opportunities, personalize learning, a teacher guiding, coaching, supporting, along with small group instruction
We don't see what's in the image below @DrMaryHoward@ToddRisser#jwmsstaffinnovates
I wouldnāt say that innovative teachers listen more than they speak. I think they would have qualities of both a great speaker and listener. #jwmsstaffinnovates
Agree! The innovative teacher's mind think, adjusts. creates, and most of all listens to and watches students in order to respond to their needs. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A3 You canāt discern the teacher from the kids, kids all over the place, noise, student-led, student-centered, joyful, rusk-taking, different, shattering status quo. No cookie cutter image. Look for personalization. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A3: Innovation will be different by subject area. The key characteristics would be student engagement and the products that are created. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A3: It would look different in each location. Your concept of innovation should be different than mine because you are looking at the situation from your perspective. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A3
I would also add we would see technology transforming learning and making the teacher better Vs taking the place of the teacher.
@PHausTech@LRobbTeacher#jwmsstaffinnovates
A3: Passion Projects, student choice, student voice, student leadership, students helping students, teachers are addressing misconceptions and helping Ss grow. When we do passion projects, I also do one with the students. #LifeLongLearner#jwmsstaffinnovates
Excellent! @Phil_Strunk It's important to teach with 21st century skills and not get stuck in what we always do. Innovation is also thinking creatively within a boxāwe all have to live within some boxes. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A3 You canāt discern the teacher from the kids, kids all over the place, noise, student-led, student-centered, joyful, rusk-taking, different, shattering status quo. No cookie cutter image. Look for personalization. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A3: Each classroom would look different, but would have collaboration in common. The students (and teachers) would be working together and exploring. #JWMSstaffinnovates
A2: An innovative teacher never stops learning or trying to improve. They embrace change and are not afraid to fail when trying something new. They always question. #jwmsstaffinnovates
Absolutely. Different by subject, different by teacher because it comes down to the relationship with the students and figuring out what they need! Great point! #JWMSstaffinnovates
A4: "Relationships, relationships, relationships." An #InnovatorsMindset cannot thrive or even exist without relationships. Strong, trusting relationships between colleagues and between students are a must!
#jwmsstaffinnovates
A4: I think a climate that does not punish failure when the person is trying to innovate is a necessity. We didn't send a man to the moon on the first trip, and have missed the mark since, so why would we expect innovation in the classroom to always be a hit? #jwmsstaffinnovates
A4: @gcouros guides us to focus on creating a space where a āstrength-based approach for learning and leadershipā allows individuals to flourish as the explore their growth mindset. #JWMSstaffinnovates
A4: Affective communication between students and teachers, teachers and other teachers, teachers and admin, admin and central office, CO and State, State and nation. We are all one system that should be working together to better the learning exp for our Ss. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A2: Innovative teachers are passionate, creative, and risk takers. They have to think outside of the box. Being innovative is answering questions that most likely havenāt been asked yet. #JWMSstaffinnovates
A4: Not so much here, but...Admins, please trust your staff. You hired us for a purpose. Let us do what you hoped that we would. Provide space to try, grow, fail, and innovate. Nothing gets accomplished on lock down, except the squashing of dreams. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A4 Relationships, relationships, relationships! Trust, vision, collaboration, kindness, community, servant leadership, heart, common goals. It must be all about the kids. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A4: Student-centered and solutions-oriented. If a schools falculty are both, they will be willing to make changes that will improve outcomes. #jwmsstaffinnovates
You're so right! It's something districts need to continually work towards. Collaboration and communication are important part of innovation. #jwmsstaffinnovates
I think sometimes admin focuses so much on some teachers that they really miss out on all of the cool stuff that we are doing. AND sometimes, they overlook some problems that need to be addressed. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A4 The staff needs buy in to whatever you are trying to implement. I think it helps if good models are already in place or peothatare available that staff can go to for help. #jwmsstaffinnovates
Yes. Today if you teach in isolation it is a choice. Teaching has become a collaborative profession because we all want to work together to help students succeed! @misskoplin@_on11#jwmsstaffinnovates
A4: Student-centered and solutions-oriented. If a schools falculty are both, they will be willing to make changes that will improve outcomes. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A4 also very little micromanagement. When you allow teachers to try new things and even fail you empower your staff. They will grow #jwmsstaffinnovates
A3: innovation is flexible, curious, and resilient. Students are actively working to find solutions to problems locally and globally. Ts and Ss are collaborating with "real world" connections on learning simulations. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A4 also very little micromanagement. When you allow teachers to try new things and even fail you empower your staff. They will grow #jwmsstaffinnovates
A4: For effective change to happen, a school needs teachers willing to change, a supportive administrative team, and students willing to take the plunge with us! Change can only occur if everyone buys into it.#JWMSstaffinnovates
A5: I've learned to speak my mind. Used to keep my ideas to myself out of fear that they would be disregarded, disrespected, or worse, completely unheard. #JWMSstaffinnovates
A5: I'm part of a team of teachers at @JWMSGoCougars trying to redesign our remediation block to better meet needs of ALL students. I am also trying to integrate more authentic PBAs as our state moves away from SS standardized tests for PBAs #jwmsstaffinnovates Oh and my podcast!
A5: I initiate innovation by continuing my lifelong learning to be the best technology integrationist, teacher, trainer, and college possible. I make it a point to learn constantly and share as much as possible.
#jwmsstaffinnovates
A5: We initiate innovation in our school by adapting to the ever changing landscape of education and technology while always focusing on the why @simonsinek#JWMSstaffinnovates
A5: I push forward. If some people roll their eyes or try to belittle my passion for my career, I donāt stumble on that. Itās not going to bring me down because I know theyāre scared and donāt want to change. I get it, so I keep smiling and keep offering help. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A5: I initiate innovation in my school by trying new things in my classroom and sharing what I'm doing with other teachers and admin #jwmsstaffinnovates
A5: I just go out and do my own thing. I am loud and awkward. I am the "lone fool, dancing on the hill" looking for the "first follower" to dance with me. In a matter of 3 hours, we filled our second semester schedule for #122edchat. Happy to not dance alone. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A5: I innovate in my school by always looking for and trying new tech tools. If itās something that I think a teacher could use, I share it with them. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A5: I've learned to speak my mind. Used to keep my ideas to myself out of fear that they would be disregarded, disrespected, or worse, completely unheard. #JWMSstaffinnovates
Yes, Alana! To innovate and be creative you need space to risk trying new ideas. Everyone grows at different ratesāit's important for those who are changing to keep communicating with those on the sidelines. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A5 Refuse to accept no. Always push limits for the good of students. Always learn (read a lot). Always be kind and joyful. Take risks. Model. Support others. Share ideas. Share story globally. Keep leading with heart. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A5: Modeling it in your classroom and inviting others in to learn and grow along side of you. Using things like pineapple charts or #Observeme to create a culture of #growthmindset and riskstaking. #jwmsstaffinnovates
Yes the thing to remember is when you change things for the good there can be push back. I try to always remember my purpose and continue to move forward with a smile. If I think it may help my ss then I have to keep going #jwmsstaffinnovates
A5: I push forward. If some people roll their eyes or try to belittle my passion for my career, I donāt stumble on that. Itās not going to bring me down because I know theyāre scared and donāt want to change. I get it, so I keep smiling and keep offering help. #jwmsstaffinnovates
Great observation, Christy! Choice is key in writing, reading, and all subjects. Choice empowers students and shows that teachers value their thinking and decisions! #jwmsstaffinnovates
Innovative teachers are passionate about everything their students express an interest in! They take the time to listen more than they talk, & they have a growth mindset. They believe any dream can be achieved through hard work, passion, & perseverance! #jwmsstaffinnovates
A6: (1/2) I see the #InnovatorsMindset as a song like Walk by the Foo Fighters, Dare You To Move by Switchfoot, or, perhaps the best fit, With A Little Help From My Friends by Joe Cocker.
#jwmsstaffinnovates
A6: "The Man in the Mirror" by Michael Jackson. For teachers to change they have to look inside about their practices to see if they are working and suitable for Ss. You have to wake up every morning and "look in the mirror" about yourself as a professional
#jwmsstaffinnovates
A6: One song that comes to mind is @coldplay's "Adventure of a Lifetime." (I LOVE Coldplay) If you embrace @gcouros's ideas in #InnovatorsMindset it can take you on an incredible journey that will change the way you educate and inspire and students! #jwmsstaffinnovates
A6: This Is the New Year by A Great Big World @AGreatBigWorld
āSpeak louder than the words before you/And give them meaning no one else has found/The role we play is so importantā #JWMSstaffinnovates
A5 Refuse to accept no. Always push limits for the good of students. Always learn (read a lot). Always be kind and joyful. Take risks. Model. Support others. Share ideas. Share story globally. Keep leading with heart. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A6: (2/2) The path the #InnovatorsMindset helps guide one towards is not one taken alone. It is one full of collaboration and shared breakthroughs, one of teaching and one of being taught.
#jwmsstaffinnovates
A6: "Rock You Like A Hurricane". Hahahaha! Not my first pick of songs, but for some reason this Simpsons episode came to mind when I read the question. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A5: I realize that if I don't try something, I will never know it would have worked. Taking a risk is key. I try to convey this to my students. It is scary for them, and me sometimes! The other key is a supportive admin team and colleagues to learn from. #jwmsstaffinnovates
So true... Squeaky wheel and all that. Advocate for yourself and share. But also remember to advocate for the ones that may be not ready to do so. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A5 Refuse to accept no. Always push limits for the good of students. Always learn (read a lot). Always be kind and joyful. Take risks. Model. Support others. Share ideas. Share story globally. Keep leading with heart. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A2 Someone constantly uncomfortable but always working to make the kids more comfortable. Searching for better even when it seems good enough

Q6: Born To Run by Bruce Springsteen. All guitars, clanging gears and metaphors for striving to bring success to the world around you.
@ERobbPrincipal#jwmsstaffinnovates
A1: We are at a point in time where we can really impact society by embracing change within our classrooms to grow children into problem-solvers and thinkers. Iāve been working really hard to focus on feedback to create growth and not on grades! #jwmsstaffinnovates
A1: having a growth mindset isnāt enough. We have to push limits, take risks, and be forward thinkers. Communication with colleagues is key! #jwmsstaffinnovates
A2. Open-mindedness and a thirst for knowledge. How can I present this in a more meaningful way? What are other teachers trying and how is that going? What are my kids Interested in and how can I tap into that? #jwmsstaffinnovates
A3: personalized learning, project based assessments, creative uses of technology. In general not much of what we experienced as students. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A1: A reminder our job is to connect to kids and connect kids to the world. We are bridges to adulthood in a changing world and we get to change with it. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A3. At times it is organized chaos. The kids are collaborating, moving, designing, thinking, and most importantly learning in a variety of ways. There is a touch of personalization in what kids are doing. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A2: Innovation is an opportunity developed with a process. Get relentless, get restless, get a process and keep your eyes on the horizon. One step every day, one change every iteration. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A5: for starters, embracing twitter as a PLN and PD resource and working with colleagues to spread the word. Pushing comfort zones and sharing ideas. Communication is key! #jwmsstaffinnovates
A4. Leadership - and not just from those with a title. Relationships to provide support for risk taking. People who are curious and have a desire to push the envelope. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A2: Innovative teachers think outside the box put students first and understand that rules while important dont' apply if Students learning is hampered by them #jwmsstaffinnovates
A5. I jump on any opportunity I am given to learn something new and I bring the great ideas back to my classroom. I share the cool things that I do with my colleagues and offer them support on testing things out for themselves. #jwmsstaffinnovates
A6: Man in the Mirror - Michael Jackson. It all starts with honest reflection and a desire to change! Stop waiting for those around you to change and step up and take a plunge into the deep end! #jwmsstaffinnovates
