Welcome! And what have you been watching on Netflix lately? :) I'm excited for the new Gilmore Girls!
Hiya! is an amazing tool!
Hiya! is such fun to play with!
Amber Matty, Learning 20/20 Team Kanawha Co. Schools. Favorite tech tool? Shadow puppet Edu & Osmo
Can’t wait for new season of House of Cards!
Good evening! yes, Twitter is so powerful!
I haven't had time lol...but NUMB3RS is always my favorite binge
Hi! is fun. Have you tried their newest kit?
really like scratch Jr. and PBS Scratch Jr, too!
Fav app would be so powerful!
Question 1 incoming shortly...
Hey Rachel... I scheduled a lot tonight .
Joe Gonzalez 5th Grade KCS Fav tech tool is
A 0 Angie Milliman, AP of curriculum at Hedgesville High, cheerleader for my Ss and Ts, fav of the moment is my swivl
A1: Digital learning, blended learning, _____ learning. It's all the same. It is LEARNING. Always need 2 supprt Ts n improvng lrng
I have not yet, but I have been looking at the set and want to order it soon. Pizza shop is cool!
Now I've not heard of swivl...what's that? :D
I really need one of those.
SAME! Don't think I can work in edu without one ever again. Chrome & Google Drive also irreplaceable for me.
Did a self portrait with Masterpiece so fun!
agreed! Bought one for home this past summer
A1: You can't just give out technology and expect it to solely change things. You have to learn how to change with it.
A1: Tech isn't a separate subject. It should be integrated and blended into our lessons and teaching!
I love Osmo because it allows Ss to interact w/objects, but participate in abstract thinking
A1 learning is a process deliberate and meaningful tech is a tool implementation needs support to yield meaningful instruction
Hello ! Tech is great, but if it's just something added without value, it really doesn't help a S grow. There's got to be a purpose
A1these days they kinda go hand in hand we have to change to reach all Ss
There should always be a purpose for tech, agreed!
nothing could be more absurd than an experiment in which computers are placed in a classroom where nothing else is changed-Papert
A1: There needs to be a why. Why is it being used? How can it help Ss learn?
A1 you have to scrub, clean, wash BEFORE you can add tech tools. Tech isn't always the answer.
Right! where's that image of the past with the computers of today on it???
A1: Good teaching is good teaching. Tech can enhance it, but not replace it. Bad teaching is bad teaching. Tech can't fix it.
Very true! Sometimes tech isn't the answer! *gasp* :)
Technology has to have a purpose. And a specific learning outcome.
Excellent https://t.co/P1qXt2pQek
A1: Good teaching is good teaching. Tech can enhance it, but not replace it. Bad teaching is bad teaching. Tech can't fix it.
A1 otherwise teachers would be replaced with computers or ATMs.
A1: Tech is just a tool. By itself, it may engage. The T's planning/mindset/vision is what gives learning a purpose.
And it definitely needs a purpose!
Question 2 coming in 1 minute....
Thank you! I love this image so much!
Great point. All lrng shld have a specified outcome. Be clear. Can ur Ss tell others what they r supposed to b lrng?
I never throw tech in the mix unless I know it enhances the outcome.
A2 Ts have been doing thngs for centuries that tech can do better, faster, more efficient. Liberate urself to spend MORE time F2F
A2: SO many more ways for students to express what they know!
A2: They need to own their own mastery and show it in how they understand it. Tech allows for that to happen seamlessly.
A2: Can help target specific students and make more of "you" if used correctly.
Yes! I'm working on a project with a HS class and have given them choice of how to present their final work on it
A2: With apps like Ts can add what the Ss need to learn. Giving each child what they need
My s's are so visual. Interactive maps or time lines with pop up videos alllow students to "experience" the material.
A2 I know that as a primary T I get my Ss to show me that they understand things creatively and their Ps can see it 2
is another way to get work to specific students and differentiate how it's done
A2: Tech as a tool allows for unique projects and creations. Students have opportunity to create w/things they're good at.
A2: Ss can also show what they know in many different way with tech
A2: personalized learning is only effective if it truly focuses on the S & their growth. If the tech assists that, then use it
A2: The oxymoron is that some edus feel tech w/ evntly replace the T. No, will actlly make T more human.… https://t.co/0npIoBTBJU
We don't want Asimov's "The Fun They Had" future to come to pass for our students!
A 2 it can give choice, confidence, accommodation, assitance and the opportunity to thrive
All Ss like to be creative tech allows them to do this in a way I never imagined
And every day there are more options for creation! Digital creators, not consumers!
Yes! Flipped videos are awesome! and myself did this with a lesson last week at Edgewood El. It was great!
Question 3 incoming at 8:21...
A2 tech can connect them to the world that Encyclopedia Brittanica did when we were younger
Just like life after public education, technology can provide students with info they need or want to know- lifelong learners
A2 Such great opportunities to differentiate. My kids love making videos. Commercials for the colonies was a favorite!
and no sitting in a library to do that either!
Checking in late... reading through tweets to catch up!
Q3: What do you feel is the most important first step when schools decide to adopt new technology? https://t.co/gfXGfVp9b3
Hey everyone, give a shout out to the students lurking in our chat tonight!
Mine love trying new tech a group of Ss want to make How to vids on because they have never used it
OOOh we have lurkers??? Hiya! My sister is a student currently
I remembr 1st time I could hear JFK's voice on Encyclopedia Brittanica on the PC, the old Gateway n our house. Wow.
Q3:Training! The ts have to feel confident. Not experts... but comfort!
A3 Most imp 1st step? Ansr this Q: How will this impact lrng? 2nd Q: What will this allow me or lrnrs to do that previously cldnt?
Ts bring the "magic" to the classroom....not to mention inspiration, encouragement, motivation, etc.- They can't be replaced
A3: Determine the types of learning goals that need to be acquired by students, then find the tool that best fits.
A 3 clear purpose... well defined plan and plenty of support to assist Ts and encourage Ss
Yes! WVU CEC students at the CEC conference! https://t.co/y5QEZMMmNW
OOOh we have lurkers??? Hiya! My sister is a student currently
SWEEEET! Wish that WVU professor wld have respnded to my reqst for Edcamp up there. I'll have to find his name again.
A3 continued: Plus there is no one size fits all tool. No tool can do every little thing we wish!
A3: KNOW what you are adopting, HOW to use it, and have a sustainable plan.
Meant A3: I little distracted by the baseball game⚾️⚾️
A3: How can it enhance student learning? Will Ts accept and use the tools?
And don't just be the top down tech folks that dump it on the TISs and make them come up with the plan
A3: Decide the WHY in your school/district before purchasing. You need the "why" to get to your purpose.
A3: ASK the teacher what they need & try to match tech to that. I have a Smart Board gathering dust and bought my own green screen
Told you I would plug us in the presentation today! lol
A3 Training, goals for use, expectations; how will this impact my Ss
A3: And gear up by getting teacher buy in. Get them excited and knowledgeable about how tech can be used!
A3: Learning outcomes... Learning drives the tech, not the other way.
A3: Set lrning outcomes u want to achieve w the tech. Just don't buy b/c it's trendy, etc. will it be best for Ss? Can they use it
Nope. For a plan to be sustainable, "TIS" as the only action step isn't acceptable.
Way to go Rikki! I always put on my name tags. Gets me at least 1 Q each conference :)
That answer was from personal experience. Bought 1:1 laptops for 6th grade and then dumped on me to plan how to use
This happens and then t's never actually implement tech that could have been very beneficial to the s's
Give Ts time to play & explore- Ts need to see/use new technology multiple times before they use it in instruction
If the top had a plan or knew how to have a plan, they wouldn't dump. That's my 2 cents.
Question 4 incoming at 8:29...
Yes! The magic! https://t.co/7ZpzLSmG6P
Ts bring the "magic" to the classroom....not to mention inspiration, encouragement, motivation, etc.- They can't be replaced
Yes very much so! Don't buy to buy... make a plan!
I've been telling teachers that one person should never be your sole support- need a PLN
A3: Give teachers time to play around with it. Lecturing us isn't fun. We need hands on with guidance.
No she wants to get my attention because she is more important in her world... lol
Absolutely! Everyone needs a support system to grow
Yep!!! https://t.co/BBEXXnYfUz
I've been telling teachers that one person should never be your sole support- need a PLN
Taking a class now with and getting my PLN in place! It's a great class!
A4: Trying to figure it urslf - NoNo! Not askng Ss if they liked it - NoNo! Not allowng the tool to influence tchng & lrng - NoNo!
Sandra has done a gr8 service for several years! Needed msg!
A4: In light of our side convo...
Dumping. Dumping is bad and never works out well. Right, ?
A4: Practice with the technology a bunch BEFORE trying it with students.
A4: Not having support in place for those who many not feel comfortable.
And always have a plan B!
A4 requiring every classroom to use the same tech We lose the individual gifts if expectation is "sameness"
A4: Just sitting kids on it to consume or do programs and not letting them create
My Dr says u should dump every time you eat.
If I suddenly go off the radar...I've got 10% with no portable battery 😔
Not planning for time to teach the new tool/device and expectations for use
A4: Deciding you don't like it so your students won't use it.
A4 Some classrooms are effective with minimal tech other thrive with total tech instruction.
YES eeeh yucky. I despise any attempts to standardize instruction.
A4: No - Not having a back up plan when something inevitably doesn't work the way you planned.
Yes - Fin… https://t.co/G1miThnqm7
A4 having no purpose for use; just using the tech for play
A4: The way you talk to/support others with the new tech. Meet folks where they are, don't make them feel like they "can't"
Or giving up on using it because there were connection issues "that one time"
A4: A big no no is too much /too many. Try something and see it through. Get help and find how it can enhance learning outcomes.
Excellent point! Key point! All the gold stars to you!
A4: using tech as a "space filler", for games, or saying it's "differentiated learning". No, no, no!
I always have one of those groups! It’s the kids who can laugh with me when things don’t go as planned.
This is huge for me. I need support st my level!
A4: Don't try to do every new tool or great thing at once! Do one thing, reflect and change, and then maybe do another.
A4 Always be positive. A good attitude from the support system does wonders to encourage people to try new tech
This is why my Connected Educator PD is 1:1 once a month so I can personalize it.
Question 5 coming at 8:37....
Definitely! Need to reflect on our usage & practices. It is making an impact on student growth? https://t.co/bxgcIhlW41
A4: Don't try to do every new tool or great thing at once! Do one thing, reflect and change, and then maybe do another.
Do you really want me to answer that? :)
https://t.co/bTVHQVhpAK
If not mindful of relationships & actions, you can shut people down very quickly. It's hard to mend & help after hurt
Assuming that you always need to know more than the Ss- when you learn together students see you model authentic problem solving
A4: no to 'recipe' projects that have the exact same final product and no S creativity
Q0: Ms. Collins - Harrison County, West Virginia - Apple anything...
I think it's a no-no strategy when you try to stand alone. Technology is made to be collaborative today.
A0: Ms. Collins - Harrison County, West Virginia - Apple anything...
It is so much fun to see the strength in each Ss when they are given a choice of the end product
A5: As a T, I took control myself rather than relying others to dictate my lrng. I didn't wait for schl ldr or district to show me
A5: Lifelong learning.. there's no way around it. Technology is always updating. Teachers should too!
YES. "Kids don't learn from people they don't like." - Rita Pierson (Neither do adults)
A5: understand the why behind the tech and be willing to learn from play!
A5: Take control and seek your own opportunities or chances. Find others willing to learn with you!
A5: Ts must own their own learning. Set goals. Do whatever it takes to reach them. Personalize your own PD!
A5 always question. connect with others. be willing to share. adopt an open class attitude
A5 don’t shut down when something else new comes out to “learn”
Try to avoid specific tools, instead think tools to collaborate...ways to present and communicate info to a large group..
Hey Coryssa! What building are you in over there?
A5: You have to stay up to date in technology. No idling. Our students are/ will surpass us in this area.
A5: Ts must own their own learning. Set goals. Do whatever it takes to reach them. Personalize your own PD!
A5 edtech is evolving at an unbelievable rate. no one person can keep up. be connected to others will keep us growing
There should be no comfort zone for educators that is more important than a student's relevant education. From
Hey! Lincoln Middle School in Shinnston
A5: I prepare by staying up to date with what's out there, through being a connected T. Don't know how disconnected Ts do it.
A5: Follow educators on Listen to the Ss they often know new apps and programs
A5 continually using variety of new and emerging technologies for prof. And personal use to understand possibilities for teaching
A5: There's always something new to learn with technology. Oh and offers a wonderful publication for free
A5: Ts must embrace change. We can't be afraid of it. I think we must be willing to let our Ss take the lead in new technology.
Yes, very much so! Students can do more than we think!
A5: be willing to take risks and know your purpose/goals- what are you trying to accomplish?
Question 6 incoming at 8:46...
A5: Help others realize that integrated tech isn't just "one more thing" We can transform our teaching practices & let Ss help
I hear this way too often as a reason not to go to tech PD
Our learners are changing as technology evolves- while we are surprised our environment is connected, kindergartens expect it
A5: also- focus on the positive, esp with mandates- I always try to consider how we can work the changes in our favor
Teach to standards, not to a manual. Create instead of worksheet. Produce instead of drill to the click of a timer.
good to hear, because I'm rarely comfy!
A6: Learn about different tools for creation and share with students. Show them how they can be used potentially.
A6: Many Ss already have their own YouTube channels or know someone who does. They want to create their own content
Always to feel that healthy balance! Ur Ss will reap the rewards of ur efforts.
A6 find tools that Ss can use in ways to create to show what they know not consume what they know
A6: Once the Ss have used the tools for creation they will ask other Ts if they can create for them too.
Feeling the love from thanks! I needed that tonight :)
Yup! You get some very different answers when you have them create!
Provide time, tools, space for Ss to build & create products to demonstrate knowledge- assessment doesn't have to be paper/pencil
A6 designing instruction including assessments that focus on production.
A6: Ts need to know they don’t need to know the tech they need to know the content. The Ss will take care of the tech.
Include more edtech ideas and PD for Ss in teacher prep programs!
A6: are all great tools to use!
Our Superintendent even suggested having students who wanted to attend teacher PD on edtech.
Thank you for letting me crash the chat this evening! Miss my WV home!
Question 7 popping in at 8:53...
I think it's a gr8 idea to invite Ss to T PD on edtech. Parents too.
No problem :) I'm in VA now myself so I know that feeling. I live where there's no mountain view now...miss it!
A6: Develop experiences that have Ss showing mastery through creation and performance, make the Lrng relevant, not nonsense.
A7 Gr8 Q. I alwys wnt to know how Ts r willing to lrn when TIME for face2face PD is not availble. Can't complain if we arn't wllng
Q7: When seeking more edtech PD, in what ways are you willing to engage with others and learn? https://t.co/2GJpOZ3Rdk
So thankful to have you occasionally Leanna!
A5 utilize cross curricular projects to allow S more time to create
A6: love to watch them lrn as they create.( tech or old fashioned) They take ownership and this creates deeper knwleg Win win sit!
I need to crash another wvedcamp
A6: Have S lead on demonstrating tech programs & tools!! Ask them what they want/need
A7 I provided this flash writing assignment for my Ts as means to reflect on positive culture w/students. https://t.co/DKcyAKuMWq
Dec 12 Ss will showcase their maker space tools at T PD
I want video! This sounds like a great idea!
A7: I will go where I need to go. As an ITRT I have to teach my teachers and I love any chance to learn something new!
A7 lately I look for things that have Ts w/ the same level of tech interest as me
Switching ice packs. I've been a good girl this evening. LOL
A7: The one who can not rest is resting I hope
A7: I prefer using Twitter or going to PD. Can't wait to go to in Dec & then in July (& maybe bunk with )
A6: I always feel I have to offer tech as SpEd T. W/ tech, my Ss can show me more! I wld as GE, but access is vital in our world!
I teach adults, tech is even more a challenge 2 get them 2 embrace. But sometimes they go home & show kids. Then I have success!!
A7: Local PD, Twitter Chats, EdTech Internet articles, my PLN
As always says: If we are to better educate our kids, we must first better educate their educators.
A7: PD that can allow Ts to succeed at all levels. Making sure all Ts are "Doing" not just listening. Hands On Personal PD.
Thank you to my & friends for joining tonight! :)
Well folks, tonight has been great! I loved chatting with you and hearing your ideas. I hope you had fun too!
