Welcome to this week's RCS Twitter Chat. Tonight, we are looking at the Visible Learning mind frames of effective educators. Let us know who is here. Remember to use the hashtag #RCSTechChat
Hey everyone! I am Clarissa Miles tech coach at RWS/LPS and co-host tonight! I am looking forward to getting into classrooms for some fun #edtech after testing! #RCSTechChat
Rosalind Brock, Rocky Fork, 8th Grade/ Reading & Writing. I am excited to seeing our first ever group of students show what they've learned this year on TNReady. #RCSTechChat
Jennifer Dellinger, David Youree Elementary, Art teacher. I am about to go on maternity leave, but I am excited to finish this month off with some fun art projects! #rcstechchat
Hello everyone! Jennifer Miller. Buchanan Elementary/5th grade ELA and Social Studies. I'm a newbie to twitter and this is my first PD twitter chat! I'm looking forward to learning about new strategies to use in my classroom! #rcstechchat
Jennifer thanks for joining in! Its going to be a great night for your first chat! Just make sure to answer all 8 questions and complete the form at the end. #RCSTechChat
A1-Formative assessments should guide Ts daily instruction. If Ss do not master the material, how are you going to re-present the content? It is vital to engage Ss in meaningful/effective learning activities in which the teacher is actively involved. #knowthyimpact#RCSTechChat
A1 I constantly use "exit tickets". These are quick assessments to see how much my students took from the lesson just taught. It also leads into what I do during small groups. #rcstechchat
A1 As a tech coach, I can see my impact in the way Ss produce their digital works. Being able to see how they have interpreted a tool I've shown them and created something amazing is cool to experience! #rcstechchat
A1 I gauge my impact by asking my students questions. I am constantly asking them what they are learning to make sure they are getting the content. #rcstechchat
A1; We have to make assessing our impact a priority. The question is not just is this engaging, but is it moving our students closer to their learning goal. #rcstechchat
A1: On a daily basis I would say formative assessments and quick checks (exit tickets). But also just having conversations with the kiddos. Lately, we've been talking a lot about goals & how we know we've grown this year. #rcstechchat
A1- Assessing students and actively looking over data will help reveal your impact on students. Also, the positive relationships formed with students will also help impact student learning! #RCSTechChat
A1: Being a writing teacher, I see most of the development when they complete essays. This is not daily, but I do try and gauge through a few different methods.
Daily assessment, whether formal or informal, gauges the impact of instruction. Don't just give an assessment - use the results to drive what happens in the classroom the next day! #rcstechchat
A1- I use data based program called Aleks in my math intervention class and this allows me to see every aspect of which they are struggling or excelling in. Really enjoy this program. #rcstechchat
A1- Exit tickets are a great way to check students understanding each day. Having my kids track their own test data has been really beneficial too! #RCSTechChat
A1 Constantly assessing (formal/informal) the “room” to make sure Ss know what they should relearning and how they are to express it. Then assess if they can #rcstechchat
A1 I use quick 7 question checkpoints that cover the standard of the day. Students answer them on a reusable sheet that fits multiple days. That way my kids and I can all see their growth as well as understanding of that day’s skill. #Rcstechchat
When I see active engagement and participation from students and when I am able to see the results from assessments. I am able to see the impact that the instruction is having on the students learning. #rcstechchat#knowyourimpact
A1: It is important that teachers not only provide clear learning intentions, but they have to have strong success criteria of what it will look like when they are successful. Success criteria allow students to self-evaluate and gauge their own progress. #rcstechchat
A1: At the end of each lesson, I usually ask an exit question to give me feedback on the student's level of understanding of the goal for the lesson. Also, I try to start the lesson the next day with a similar question to measure retention of the skill. #RCSTechChat
A1: Formative assessments, of course, but those can take many forms: exit tickets, poll questions, engaging one on one with students, and/or having students self-assess their progress are just a few ways #rcstechchat
A1- Ss must know UPFRONT how what is expected to be successful. Throughout the lesson, formative assessments help drive the instruction. Ss should also be able to evaluate their learning at lesson end. #RCSTechChat
A1: At the end of each lesson, I usually ask an exit question to give me feedback on the student's level of understanding of the goal for the lesson. Also, I try to start the lesson the next day with a similar question to measure retention of the skill. #RCSTechChat
I always had my students track their own data as well. I felt that it was important for them to know where they are and where they need to be. We set goals from this all the time. #studentownership#rcstechchat
A1- Ss must know UPFRONT how what is expected to be successful. Throughout the lesson, formative assessments help drive the instruction. Ss should also be able to evaluate their learning at lesson end. #RCSTechChat
A2-Professional development (not just for hours) can help Ts with new/effective strategies to use with Ss. Ts stepping out of their comfort zone to engage Ss, working in small groups, blended learning! #neverstoplearning#nevergiveup#rcstechchat
A2 Instilling a good growth mindset in my students and truly believing in them makes all the difference in the world! They need a champion for change. #rcstechchat
A1: the best way to learn anything about a student, including what they know about the content of the course, is always a face to face conversation. The difficulty is the time constraints of having those with every student #rcstechchat
A2: changing the mind set. I may not get it 'yet' but I can. I see this in my students writing. Having individual data chats with students about their writing. Lets students focus on one thing rather than ALL the things. #rcstechchat
A2: I like to have checkpoints along the way where students can look back at an older piece of work and compare it to something similar that was done recently. They are always shocked at how "little kid" their old writing looks. lol #rcstechchat
A2- Not giving up on our students, especially the ones that are struggling or become difficult. Helping them get out of the "pit" and teaching them to have a growth mindset shows that you believe all students can improve...because they can! #RCSTechChat
A2 I change the way I explain how to do a project to a student if they are having trouble. I also will use different ways to get across a concept such as visually, orally, tactile, etc. #rcstechchat
A2- acknowledging accomplishments even when they are small to encourage all students. Also encouraging students to set their own goals so they can see their growth.
#rcstechchat
A2 #rcstechchat I guess I can tell there is change by how eager they are to learn more. How they respond to different methods and to me as a teacher. Since I teach special education I cannot use the "normal" methods of evaluations so I have to go with responsiveness to lessons.
A2- Make a big deal out of any and all growth, but constantly remind kids that they can do better. If a student gets all 4s on an essay, challenge them to find the errors or use more sophisticated language/ vary transitions. #rcstechchat
A1 My student's ability to use language we have learned, independently, in speaking on academic topics and in writing allows me to see my impact and measure their growth. #RCSTechChat
A2 Every day I tell my students what I expect from them. Then, I encourage them by telling them I believe they are rockstars! I have had many students come back to me and tell me they know they can do it because I believe in them :) #rcstechchat
A2 I like the idea of collaboration in the classroom. This makes them accountable quickly. Plus, they need to know the expectation and objectives. #RCStechchat
A2: you have to see them for who they can be, not just for who they are. And it must be real: you can’t fake a good opinion of someone, cause they can tell. If they know you believe in them, they’ll respond #rcstechchat
A2 I see students tracking their own data and growth. As a school, we also celebrate growth schoolwide. Also, teachers and students participating in "data chats" - knowing where they are and where they are going. #rcstechchat
A2 - Growth mindset is not only important for students, but teachers as well. The teacher needs to believe they can have an impact on student learning and understanding #rcstechchat
Love the individual data chats. It is amazing to see the effort from student once they know that you care enough to sit with them one on one to talk about them. #rcstechchat
A2- Creating and maintaining high expectations in a supportive environment. Keeping that bar high while supplying the scaffolding students may need to achieve the goal. #rcstechchat
#RCSTechChat A2: With remediation and enrichment classes, at the end of our day, I can spend extra time with students who work at a slower pace. I do not have the same standard for every student. I guess my only standard is to be better than the day before.
A2-All groups, everyday, begin with “What is our success criteria today?” What steps do you need to make to meet that criteria? Throughout lesson, we do mental checks to see “where we are”. End of lesson, were you successfull? Show me? #rcstechchat
A2- I have taught both special ed and gen ed, and have definitely seen ALL kids improve. They don't always improve in the same way, or at the same pace, but they DO improve. #RCSTechChat
A2: knowing each student and what motivates them. Public praise, candy, in room lunch, technology helper of the day, and individual progress meetings are some examples I used. #rcstechchat
A2 2 ways I know I am a change agent: I don’t give up when helping Ss learn gets hard. I constantly look for new ways to help Ss see how they have many assets to build on and can use them to learn & well, Ss have returned years later to thank me (best feedback ever) #rcstechchat
A2 I agree with many responses here. If you make the kids believe they can do it, they will try even harder to achieve! PDs are great as well. #neverstoplearning#RCSTechChat
A2- I have many students who just need to have someone be their supporter and someone who has faith in them that they can learn and be successful. I have seen many of my students excel in and out of the classroom with me showing my caring and supporting notion #rcstechchat
A2: Believing you are a change agent is believing that the decisions you make and don't make as a teacher matter and have consequences for learning. You may come in my class not knowing something, but I can change that. #rcstechchat
A2: Start by helping them find their strengths. Build confidence/work ethic. Help them apply that ethic to areas where they may struggle and celebrate even the smallest victories. Build on it. #RCSTechChat
A2: The students and I chart our progress monitoring data together. We discuss what went great and what we need to work for the next test. Then, we set a goal for next time (Example: I will get two more questions correct or I will not miss the addition problems.#RCSTechChat
A.1 I am asking questions to students constantly while I am walking around and sitting with each group in order to check on their progress with our topic. This allows me to add challenge/reinforcement.#RCStechchat
A2-I really try to make sure I give those hesitant learners positive feedback to grow them and feed their confidence but only in an authentic way. When I start a lesson with both students and teachers, I always make it a point to tell them where we're "going". #RCSTechChat
A2. Great rapport with students and positive learning atmosphere. When Students feel loved and appreciated, they seem to have a better connection with you and start appreciating what you do for them! #RCSTechChat
I believe that having meaningful conversations with a student is a great way to practice this! Letting my students know that I believe in them gives them more confidence to try their best to succeed and improve! #rcstechchat
A2- having one-on-one conferences with students to set their personal/individual goals. making sure that the success criteria is posted. I also have students track their own growth by coloring in a chart .. for students to physically see their growth. #rcstechchat
A3 Anyone can teach you something, but learning it is a whole different sport. In order for Ss to learn, we have to think of the whole child (mindset, skill set, etc) and focus instruction in a way that suits their learning style. #rcstechchat
A3-When a teacher is in the trenches with his/her Ss. Asking questions, LISTENING to Ss, giving feedback, & being actively involved. So often we are lifeguards instead of swimmers (#tlap reference) Also discussing actionable data with other Ts #rcstechchat
This is so important. We can't let them opt out of learning, and we have to ensure we have the support they need so they can be successful. #rcstechchat
Students feel safe to make mistakes. They are not scared to communicate how they came to their mistake, leading them to learning how to fix it. #rcstechchat#numbertalksrock
A2- having one-on-one conferences with students to set their personal/individual goals. making sure that the success criteria is posted. I also have students track their own growth by coloring in a chart .. for students to physically see their growth. #rcstechchat
A3: the teacher’s focus becomes outward instead of inward: they begin to focus more on what is happening with the student, and what can be done for them rather than on themselves #rcstechchat
I think we forget that sometimes. It is good to remind ourselves that sometimes things don't work and we are wrong and that is ok! Dust yourself off and try again. #rcstechchat
A3: I try to remember that I am the 'guide on the side" not the main show. Students have been learning so much from each other in our class discussions. One student is the discussion leader for the day and they have to create questions about the novel chapter. #rcstechchat
A3 Students feel safe to make mistakes. They are not scared to communicate how they came to their mistake, leading them to learning how to fix it. #rcstechchat#numbertalksrock
A3 Our school has learning intentions and success criteria. I have started having my students say them for every subject so they know what they are learning and how they will know they have learned it. #rcstechchat
A3 It is focused on students not teachers. We are talking about learning progressions and next steps for students to meet their learning goals. #rcstechchat
A3 I notice PLC teams can get caught up in planning what they are going to DO each day. I try to redirect the conversation to what do you want students to LEARN? #rcstechchat
A3- Never giving Ss the answer, but coaching them through what they already know to help them arrive at the answer on their own. Allowing Ss to struggle not only builds confidence, but lets them know that they do know what they are doing. #rcstechchat
A3- In my opinion learning actively involves the students. Students are taking ownership and participating in their learning. Teaching is more of a presentation. The students are less involved.
#rcstechchat
A3 Educators that are focused on learning are consistently assessing, adjusting their lessons and then reassessing. If the students aren't learning, have to be willing to change your teaching. #rcstechchat
A2: I believe in every one of my students! I love when they hear a compliment from me or others based on their accomplishments and how that affects their motivation and effort in the following lessons and activities! #rcstechchat
A3- It looks like letting go of a little bit of control. Putting devices in students hands instead of the teacher...it might even mean getting out of your comfort zone just a little and teaching in a way that you have ever done before! #RCSTechChat
A2 I add success criteria/goals with each lesson we do. I tell students what is expected and they feel comfortable knowing what is expected. #RCStechchat
A3 - When focused on learning not teaching, the Ts focus on what the Ss are doing and whether they are gaining the knowledge, and redirecting your teaching to meet their needs. #rcstechchat
#RCSTechChat A3: To me, it looks like a teacher being motivated to get the students to acquire knowledge and skills for themselves through discovery, instead of trying to "force" knowledge upon them.
A3- Less complaining. Teaching is hard and we can easily fall into groaning about it when we only focus on the act of teaching. But learning...that’s fun and rewarding. When a kid gets it, I’ve done my job well. #rcstechchat
A3: It looks like everyone (including me) surprised, shocked, laughing, debating, and building relationships based on a learned bit of knowledge that we can go back and build on. #rcstechchat
A3: The conversation is more on what can we do to ensure the student is learning and being flexible with how we present content to the students. #RCSTechChat
A3- with learning you see students more involved. They start conversations and are more involved in asking more questions because their minds are thinking and learning #rcstechchat
A3- Less complaining. Teaching is hard and we can easily fall into groaning about it when we only focus on the act of teaching. But learning...that’s fun and rewarding. When a kid gets it, I’ve done my job well. #rcstechchat
I think we forget that sometimes. It is good to remind ourselves that sometimes things don't work and we are wrong and that is ok! Dust yourself off and try again. #rcstechchat
When focusing on learning and not teaching, I am basing my day to day activities in the classroom on my students. Having them as the center focus guides us to more meaningful connections and observations! #rcstechchat
A2 Setting setting learning goals, for even my Newcomers, is one way to do this. Success criteria help immensely in helping students understand the expectation and showing the steps they need to take to be successful in reaching the goal. #RCSTechChat
A3. We share about our students learning experiences and their grow. In my case, Spanish! We share about what activities seem more effective and meaningful to their lives #RCSTechChat
#rcstechchat A3 I feel when students understand the “big picture” how will we use this tomorrow, next week, next year, in high school. They take ownership in lessons which then changes the content to true learning.
A3 I believe students will engage more with you if you take an interest in their lives. Know what's going on in their home life, what are their interests, etc.. If you show an interest in them, they will work harder and be okay if they make mistakes. #RCSTechChat
A3: using leaning goals and referring to them throughout the lesson help provide me and my students with focus. It keeps them motivated and keeps me curious, assessing their understanding. #rcstechchat
A3- It completely shifts from ME talking to me critically questioning and being open their responses. Way more facilitation than direct instruction. I am merely a guide. The ss are the leaders! #rcstechchat
a3 i use the student data collected to make adjustments to my lesson for the next day-- just providing a safe environment where students are not aftraid to take risks #rcstechchat
A4-Analyzing & USING data to make instructional decisions is the most important aspect of an effective learning environment. Ss graph their own data & set goals based on the results. Data/Formative assessment was the driving force for my lessons everyday. #RCSTechChat
A3 Students feel like they have a place in the learning environment. I enjoy letting them take some control in the lessons and it not be all me. This change in my classroom has made such a huge impact. #RCStechchat
A4 Kinda going back to my exit tickets. They are not graded assessments. They are quick so I can look at them as they go to their centers. Exit ticket results become the first thing I acknowledge in small groups by pulling students to my back table. #rcstechchat
A4: We try to create assessments that best assess the standard/learning target. We use a lot of teacher created exit tickets to ensure they match the success criteria. Then using it to inform next steps! #rcstechchat
A4 Assessments should be in a variety of ways to hit the learning differences of the students. Use it for data, use it to know if re-teaching needs to be done, use it to know if going forward is appropriate. #rcstechchat
A4 I cannot use assessment tools like a general education teacher. I have to use strategies to find out what information my students know. sometimes it is through play time or just simple data collection. #rcstechchat
A4: so important to do something with the data that you get back from assessments. We use that data to reteach, review, enrich. Many times out PLC decides to each take a 'section' so they may be getting it from another teacher who might approach it differently #rcstechchat
A4 I use exit tickets to assess, then create weekly small groups from that data. I also use iReady data to help me with grouping for Math. I give unit quizzes to gauge level of mastery if the standard. #rcstechchat
#RCSTechChat A4: As I said earlier, Socrative is a great tool to get feedback in my classroom, because I have a computer lab. The feedback I have acquired throughout many lessons has made me change course on these lessons. It makes it easier to identify a need.
A4: Assessment has to be used as feedback for the teacher. Otherwise, what is the purpose? I see teachers using exit tickets to reteach in small group or to modify the next day's lesson. #rcstechchat
A4: Love Microsoft Forms Quizes to get quick data. Key is that this data must be shared with the individual student and whole class. (Here’s the question we struggled with the most as a class). #rcstechchat
A4 Assessment should be feedback to the teachers AND the students! Teachers at my school use InspireData to analyze students not meeting their projected proficiency level. Students create grades to track their own progress and set goals for the next assessment #rcstechchat
A4- I use quiziz and kahoot. These are quick assessments to allow for me and the student to know what they understand and do not understand #rcstechchat
A4 - My entire class loves quizizz. I can assign it, and students can see their progress. We use this a lot for review before a test. It lets me see if they're ready and if I need to touch on a certain area again. #RCSTechChat
I see what the kids are learning engaging it by sitting down and having conversations with them. Having them do a open form of talking with each other and getting information from each other. It helps to see where each of them are at. #rcstechchat
A4 - Sometimes writing is difficult for my Beg Els, so I use small group oral discussions as a tool to gain feedback. @flipgrid is techie way t gather this type of feedback. This ind helps me gage areas fr refinement or reteaching. #rcstechchat
A4 - I ask the students while they are working and once finished with a project about their likes and dislike on aprojects. What was hard for them, what was their favorite part, least favorite, and why. This is verbal and sometimes written. I adjust projects #rcstechchat
A3-#rcstechchat I think there is a huge difference between teachers being focused on learning vs. teaching. Teachers focused on learning r more focused on building relationships & stepping out of their comfort zones & the lesson getting 'messy'! LOTS of learning happens!
A4: Students graphing data is a great tool to give the students ownership of their learning. In a small group format, I like for the students to solve the problem and then ask them to explain their thinking. So much knowledge is gained through the conversation. #RCSTechChat
A4- As cliche’ as it is, bell work and exit tickets are my go to. I often have students file their own exit tickets in folders aligned to their level of understanding. I know what and when to reteach. #rcstechchat
A4: Having data is not the priority, knowing what the data tells you is the priority. Giving a student a test never made them know more - this is only done when we as educators use the assessment to make instructional decisions for the student. #rcstechchat
A4: recently, we had students rotate through different groups to discuss test questions and their results (why they missed it, why they got it right, etc) Going around and listening to their conversations gave me so much more input on their learning and my teaching! #rcstechchat
A4 I use assessments to modify my instruction. Questioning, matching quizzes, and class discussion are all helpful when seeing what my students know.
#rcstechchat
A4: Lately we've been playing a lot of games to review. ELA Jeopardy gets INTENSE, y'all. BrainPop is fun. And iReady is a favorite. We also rate our learning almost everyday. How they think they are doing is almost as important as how they really are doing. #rcstechchat
A4: Written response types of assessments work best for me because they allow the student to fully express the total extent of their knowledge on the subject, as well as inject their own personality and reasoning into the response #rcstechchat
A4: Love Microsoft Forms Quizes to get quick data. Key is that this data must be shared with the individual student and whole class. (Here’s the question we struggled with the most as a class). #rcstechchat
A4 By working with my groups I can get an automatic assessment of their learning. This lets me decide right then where we need to head with our lesson for that day and each that follows. #RCStechchat
Small groups, whole group, individual assessments. I do these assessments to find where the low achievements are. To fix the mistakes, I sometimes verbalize corrections myself and sometimes I allow their peers to chime in.
#RCSTechChat
A2: all students are able to change they’re able to increase their knowledge and change the way they react to other people. I’ve seen this when a student comes in and is frustrated over something a teacher said. get them to see things from other points of use #rcstechchat
A3 - The students do more of the talking and exploring. The teacher gets the students to make more of the discoveries themselves (guiding them there). #rcstechchat
A4 data collection from progress monitoring is my main assessment tool. As the teacher, I use this data to determine what deficits my students are still showing which drives small group. Ss graph and analyze this data to make their own plan of improvement. #RCSTechChat
A4 Small groups, whole group, individual assessments. I do these assessments to find where the low achievements are. To fix the mistakes, I sometimes verbalize corrections myself and sometimes I allow their peers to chime in. #RCSTechChat
A4: Letting students analyze and discuss their results helps me to see what they understand and what they didn't. This gives me the feedback I need in order to guide future instruction. #rcstechchat
A4: are use exit tickets and I put them on sticky notes and have them put them on the door. This gives me the feedback that I need to see where they stand and how I am doing. I take that information and or use it for the next day‘s lesson #rcstechchat
We try to create assessments (formative and summative) that are going to focus on all four different language skills (Listening, reading, writing and speaking) #RCSTechChat
A5-Using mistakes as learning opportunities. From the beginning let them know that it is ok to be wrong. I have seen Ts that do data chats with Ss to discuss progress which is an amazing way for Ss to understand where they are and where they need to be. #rcstechchat
A5 Allowing re-takes! Not everyone learns at the same rate or in the same way. Saying you can't re-take means it's okay for your learning to stop. Allowing re-takes shows that it's okay to make mistakes, learn from them, and try again #rcstechchat
A4 - In the SpEd world we can get overwhelmed with data collection. Having the students participate in the data chats has really improved how we as special educators work to close the gap. #rcstechchat
A5: Students have to be invested in their own learning through goal setting and self reflection. Conferencing with students is critical so they know where they are and where they're going. #rcstechchat
A5 Firstly, a comfortable classroom culture is a must. Then, discuss how assessments are tools for growth and reflection. Also, remind Ss that mistakes are wonderful learning opportunities! #rcstechchat
I use tools like plickers to make the assessment and feedback fun for my kids! They are able to see how they did almost instantly and we can discuss how well everyone has done together! #rcstechchat
A5 #RCSTechChat I said this in an earlier response. Take an interest in your students. Know what's going on in their lives and interests. Makes a HUGE difference.
A5 Since I don't do assessment and grades but if I did I would maybe not always put a grade on the paper. I would always allow do-overs. I would only put the number correct on the page not the number incorrect. Keep it positive. #rcstechchat
A5: by giving many forms of assessment including portfolios. Assure them that it’s to show what they know. And we all shine in our own way! #rcstechchat
A5 Ss should see the assessment as only a step in the learning, not the end. Show them where to go next with the results of their assessment and find ways to relearn or improve #rcstechchat
A5 I think a way to do that would be to have quizzes that didn’t count as a grade but would show how they would do on a quiz that really counted. #rcstechchat
A5: you encourage/allow mistakes, and emphasize the positive an/or correct parts of their response, including pointing out how it can lead to a deeper understanding #rcstechchat
A4-#rcstechchat MS forms, Mastery Connect, Kahoot--look at results to know where to go back and reteach, remediate, revise my lesson or enrich for some students.
A5: we spend a lot of time talking about growth. Did you stay with your 'projection grow". Did you do better than them (the average) If you did worse - what happened. Individual data chats are effective here because we learn so much more about the student then! #rcstechchat
A5: We have to provide a classroom climate that underscores errors are opportunities to growth, asking questions help us learn more, and seeking feedback is something to be celebrated. #rcstechchat
A5. One way to build the classroom culture is for them to be comfortable. They also need to know the meaning behind the assessment. Not necessarily for a "gotcha" but more for both of us to know where they are in the learning process. #rcstechchat
A5: this one’s a good question because assessments we use for grading. to get the kids to see that it’s not a gotcha moment but a Feedback for us are use the work and exit tickets in their notes to see where they’re at and how they’re doing #rcstechchat
Q5 a good way to change students minds about assessments would be to use various methods of assessment. For example, presentations, games, and projects instead of basic paper/pencil tests
#rcstechchat
A5- Not punishing students for low performance. Instead take the time to talk through assessments after they are over and encourage to celebrate mistakes...set goals and celebrate successes along the way. #RCSTechChat
A5 I usually bring the exit ticket slips with me the back table and hand them back to the students as I call them back, or show the powerpoint again. This allows them more time to think through their mistakes and for me help them refine skills (feedback). #rcstechchat
A5. I have always focused on making my students understand the value of learning a language and about all the great doors speaking Spanish can bring to their life. They know I want them to be the best in my class! #RCSTechChat
A5 we discuss the purpose of assessment early on. We follow this up with data conferences. Students see assessment as a gauge of mastery and not a grade earned. There's always room to improve and work toward mastery! #rcstechchat
A5:The student graphs provide a place for reflection. Also, when we are completing exit tickets or fluency practice, we discuss our thinking behind our answer. Not if we got the answer right or wrong. I try to get the students to change their mindset. #RCSTechChat
A5: In our classroom, we spend a lot of time talking about the importance of mistakes. We talk about knowing we are growing and learning knew things based on the mistakes we make. We focus on what we cannot do YET, not on what we cannot do. #rcstechchat
A5- using @padlet has given all the buy in they need. Set criteria and watch them WANT to succeed. The buy in comes when you put the ss in charge. As Elsa said: “LET IT GO” #rcstechchat
A5- by building that expectation into my procedures from the getgo. Once they see that I read and respond to their assessments, they understand that I’m looking for more than just a grade for the book. TELL them you need and use the assessment for feedback. #rcstechchat
A3: it’s having real conversations with them, showing them that what they’re learning and you’re teaching them can apply to real life. The biggest complaint I get from my seniors is how my going to use this in real life? I show them by having conversations with them #rcstechchat
A4 Running records are very effective in helping me assess a student's reading level as well as allowing me to analyze their errors, and determine which strategies they are using to make meaning. #rcstechchat
A5 Building a trusting/safe culture begins day 1. Students have to see that I make mistakes & they will too. I stress that's how we learn. They know I am here to help & it opens the door to great learning, trust, and growth.#RCStechchat
A5 - Allowing the students to see us as educators constantly learning and growing. We need to show them getting in the pit is where some of the greatest achievements are found. #rcstechchat
A5: As a teacher I let students redo any assignment as long as they completed a simple form I had that asked them what they were going to do to learn the content more. #rcstechchat
A5 Allowing re-takes! Not everyone learns at the same rate or in the same way. Saying you can't re-take means it's okay for your learning to stop. Allowing re-takes shows that it's okay to make mistakes, learn from them, and try again #rcstechchat
A5-#rcstechchat-As I work with students and teachers on these Nextera practice assessments, I have stressed over & over to use this opportunity to ask ?? & get help & learn from their mistakes. Encourage them in the process & build that relationship!!
A5 I love having them graph their own data, visually with stickers, color coding, anything that is easy for them to visually see their progress! #rcstechchat
A5: I will sometimes do an assignment with them and they'll try to "beat" me. When I can look at something I've done and pick out my mistakes & strengths then they see that I'm not trying to trick them. That's when they are more open to taking risks. #rcstechchat
A6-Sharing with Ss about people in history who have made amazing inventions by mistake! Engaging Ss in fun challenges like @breakoutEDU STEM challenges, or other problem solving activities encourages them to not give up! Incorporating a Growth Mindset! #rcstechchat
A5 teaching students to have a growth mindset and its okay to make mistakes. Let them know that teachers do not know everything we are also continuously learning new things each day and we make mistakes too! #rcstechchat
A6 Number talks have done wonders in my room. It creates a culture where mistakes are welcomed. We analyze errors and discuss better solutions to avoid the error. #rcstechchat
#RCSTechChat A6: I like to get them to trust me. If I have a good relationship with a student. It is easier for the student to see their errors as opportunities.
A6- Start the year teaching about Growth Mindset and the power of "YET". If you continually model this and point out when students are modeling it can transform your class. We have to have this mindset first! #RCSTechChat
A6: as crazy as this sounds, I show Ashton Kutchers speech at the beginning of the year. And reinforce his "opportunity looks a lot like hard work" through the year. Put in the hard work and opportunities come! Don't be afraid to challenge yourself. #rcstechchat
A6 As an art teacher, I have my students work on something that they are really “in to”. That makes them more excited about the project and care even more #rcstechchat
A6- my prjects present challenges in order for them to learn and grow. It should not be too easy for them. They learn to embrace the challenge and not fear mistakes. Mistakes are places for them to be creative in art. #rcstechchat
A6: I feel like this mind frame is a difficult one to nurture in my intervention students. However, I try to set a classroom culture where risks are okay and wrong answers are just a way to learn. Also, positive relationships are key. #RCSTechChat
A6 During number talks, when mistakes happen I reassure them that everyone makes mistakes and that we learn from them. My classroom environment embraces challenges because of them knowing my high expectations. #rcstechchat
A6 - This is hard for SpEd teachers. Many times our go to is to “swoop” in and save them. We’ve got to step back and allow that productive struggle to take place. #rcstechchat
A6 It is an ongoing struggle...especially the closer we get to graduation. Oftentimes, it is after they have failed before they realize that they have to "embrace the challenge". There is no such thing as mistakes...just opportunities. #rcstechchat
A6: Students should see teachers make mistakes and face challenges. Also, reading literature about others that face challenges is beneficial for students to see. #rcstechchat
A6: Students only embrace challenge if success is attainable: therefore, challenge them to go one step beyond where they are right now. As far as creating a challenge through rigor, keeping the zone of proximal development in mind is helpful #rcstechchat
A6- We have a “PRODUCTIVE STRUGGLE” display board in the room. The messiest, most incorrect, yet persevered work is displayed. It is our WALL OF FAME! #progressnotperfection#RCSTechChat
A6: i think a lead by example is a great way to do that here. When I make a mistake I tell them I made an error and now I need to fix it, Or look it up. They see this and realize not everyone is perfect and you can learn from the mistakes you make. #rcstechchat
A6 Engage students in challenges that they actually want to solve! 3-Act Math tasks are a great way to get students to persevere through difficult tasks because they provide an interesting context through videos and images #rcstechchat
Again, by setting the expectation early. With seniors, it’s tough. They’ve been so conditioned to needing one right answer, and they often want to quit before the challenge is met. They have senioritis on day one. Lol #rcstechchat
A6 Lessons on"The Learning Pit and "The Power Of Yet" also build confidence and grit. Class Dojo has great videos for younger students to illustrate this.
#rcstechchat
#RCSTechChat A6: This is, however, not always easy. Not all students want to see errors as opportunities. What would be a good method to help in this regard?
A6: I think teacher enthusiasm about learning is important. We can then create that same excitement in our classroom. Celebrate challenges, productive struggle, and growth!
#rcstechchat
A6: We celebrate failures and view them as teachers. I like to share everyday life’s failures of my own, and we discuss together the lessons we learn! It keeps the culture lighthearted and focused on a positive outcome! #RCSTechChat
A6: Having a good relationship with my students is key in our class. When they feel comfortable and as though they can trust me, they are more likely to come to me when they are having trouble! As a whole we discuss the fact that mistakes give us opportunity to grow! #rcstechchat
A6 #RCSTechChat WHS started using the "Learnging Pit" this year. It's amazing that I can have a 5th gr. and a kinder equally verbalize where they are in the learning pit. I even have one class that brags on their mistakes! Just because they know that is an opportunity to learn.
A6: I think having a strong relationship is the first step. But I also like to throw in fun challenges. We love to give each other riddles. I also have a dojo point assigned to "taking a risk." That really helps with my kids that are a little more shy. #rcstechchat
A6- my students trust my input and know I am not upset with them for not knowing everything. I help them understand that failure can lead to success. #rcstechchat
A6 We check our level of understanding at the start/end of each lesson. My class also chat about how they now feel stronger and smarter. I try to show daily them my goal is to make them the best version they can be. To grow you must challenge yourself. #RCStechchat
A6 - When Ss understand failure is an growth tool to greater learning, they will create their own mindset. Giving feedback in a timely manner so they can use it to use the error to improve is key to Grit. #rcstechchat
Your "Myth Madness" is an excellent example of this! Students were engaged and excited to participate in productive discourse about history! #rcstechchat
A6-#rcstechchat - Again, I think that comes from the classroom culture that is built! I've watched Ss working on Quizlet live reviewing vocab & making connections thru the repetitions of the games. Every day can't be a game day, but it can be a fun day to learn in our classrooms!
A6 This is an image that is posted in my classroom and referred back to often. "Did we jump the pit?" "Where are you now?" "How can you climb out?" #rcstechchat
A7-Building relationships with Ss is about security & trust. LISTEN, challenge, engage, support, & do not give up on them. Think about what you liked about your fav. teacher. Ss don't always remember what you taught them but they will remember how you made them feel.#RCSTechChat
You guys are doing great tonight! Such a powerful conversation. Make sure you don't log off before completing the form after the last question! #RCSTechChat
A7 I make sure and talk with my students about their lives and take an interest in the things they like. This has helped student relate to me who might not like art. #RCSTechChat
A7: I think it starts with day 1 culture of your classroom. I still greet every student at the door by name. I go to sporting events, concerts, I let them know that I am involved and not just for 96 minutes a day. I ask about their interests. #rcstechchat
A6. Setting high expectations is very important! And also, when you share with students about your own struggles in life and they see how you have succeeded, they embrace challenge #RCSTechChat
A7: I build a realm of trust in my classroom the students know they can come to me with any problem question or just to talk. This makes them feel safe and feel like I am open with them to help them. #rcstechchat
A7: know thy students! Take time to know what’s going on in their lives. (How is that new puppy, Grandpa, that scholarship you applied for). #rcstechchat
A7 RESPECT! I show my students respect each day. Also, spending just a few minutes a day talking to my students about things not academic allows us to build TRUST. Once these two traits are apparent, students feel comfortable asking for help. #rcstechchat
A7 I create positive relationships with my students. I make sure to keep a positive attitude. It is important that they always see me smiling because Ss definitely feed off of our energy.
#rcstechchat
A7- Humor! I’m funny and I make my students laugh. I laugh! I asked questions about their interests, and I share my own. Then we laugh at how lame I am. #rcstechchat
A7 - One way is to have empathy for their culture and language needs. Els respond well when you respect where they have come from. Also, to be vulnerable and admit when I have made a mistake. #rcstechchat
A7: one one one conversation, but not about school or content, but getting to know them as people...what they care about, their interests, fears, struggles, and motivations. I want every student to know that I like and appreciate them as a person #rcstechchat
A7- Building relationships with Ss is THE most important thing a teacher can do. Talking to them about things other than school. Making them feel important. If the child likes you and thinks you care--He/She will move mountains. #rcstechchat
A7- Humor! I’m funny and I make my students laugh. I laugh! I asked questions about their interests, and I share my own. Then we laugh at how lame I am. #rcstechchat
A7: Allow yourself to be human. Stay current on events and be approachable, to all people in the building. Take notice of the small things and bring them to light whenever possible. #rcstechchat
A7: I spend a lot of time getting to know my students. I greet them each at the door every morning and before we start our day, we discuss how our night was! Knowing their likes and dislikes helps #rcstechchat
A7- I start every morning standing outside my door, giving each of my students a high five. I ask them questions about their lives outside of school. (family, sports, interests) This seems to really build a lot of respectful relationships in my room! #RCSTechChat
A7: During intervention time, I try to start with asking the students about the day. Usually, it gives them a quick minute to get the talk out and we can build a relationship. Also, I send good notes to their teachers about awesome work completed in intervention. #RCSTechChat
A7 #RCSTechChat Simply love on your kids. I love attending their after school activities (sports/arts/birthday parties) to show them that I care about them completely.
#RCSTechChat A7: Make sure that you create a respectful classroom environment. Be consistent and stable in your handling of all classroom situations. Be an individual that the students can look up to.
A7 Relationships are built by talking and listening to our students...not just about academics. Take the time to learn something about each student. Eat lunch with them. Attend one of their games. Ask about their pet. #rcstechchat
A7- I always find areas in which students are succeeding. I never focus in only on areas that need improvement (sandwich the suggestions with compliments). #rcstechchat
A7 Be a human in front of students! Show them that you are willing to make mistakes too. Model for students what you expect from them, both behaviorally and academically #rcstechchat
A7 I TALK to my students about life. I get to know their personalities. They get to know me. I tell them daily that they are intelligent and will succeed, then I provide them with the tools to succeed. #rcstechchat
A7: That's where its so important to talk to the child about their life. I have connected with so many students this year based on a mutual love of movies and video games. I think that when they see you as a real person they will put in the work. #rcstechchat
A6 Listening to students is HUGE. In order to ensure a positive impact. When students feel you love & respect them, they will go to great lengths to do their best. #RCStechchat
A7 I TALK to my students about life. I get to know their personalities. They get to know me. I tell them daily that they are intelligent and will succeed, then I provide them with the tools to succeed. #rcstechchat
A7. I show them who proud I am of their achievements. I write them positive notes on their assignments. I hug them and just give them love. I acknowledge their culture and listen to their stories!#RCSTechChat
A7- Life is always about learning, but not always about school. Talk to them. Learn about them. Listen to their words, but hear their heart. When they know this, they will go to the ends of the earth for you! ❤️ #rcstechchat
A7: I want them to know I’m working hard for them and only them! If they feel safe, respected, and loved on, they will work hard as well! I want them to love learning and to forget that it’s “work”! Learning can be FUN. #rcstechchat
A7 After a "How many days until summer?" countdown math warm up, more kids were sad than happy. They realized summer meant they leave me and go to RWS. Relationships mean A LOT! #rcstechchat
#rcstechchat A7 I have had the pleasure of looping up to 2nd gr. From 1st. These kids and are a true family. We laugh, dance, encourage, cry when they move or if their parent dies. Watch them growing all together has been the most amazing experience. #notsureiansweredtgequestion
A6 We have been learning about "Grit" at SES this year and that it takes an attitude of determination to reach your goals. I also think celebrating growth and reminding students of how far they have come gives them a boost to keep going.
#rcstechchat
A8 I have LOTS of experience with at risk students. The best strategy I used was simply having a conversation to try to figure out why those behaviors were happening. There's always something behind it. #rcstechchat
A8-Showing at-risk Ss that you care is important. Give them responsibilities/tasks to complete so they feel needed. Making sure expectations are clear & consequences are consistent. Behavior charts, incentive programs, etc. I love @ClassDojo for behavior management. #rcstechchat
A8: it’s hard with the students who show bad behavior because there’s a number of reason for it. I had one student one year we bumped heads pretty good and then she can glued to me like we were best friends. Just encouraging them. #rcstechchat
A8 I make sure to highlight their positive behaviors and accomplishments. I make sure to let them know that I appreciate their good behavior and occasionally rewarding them.
#rcstechchat
A8 I try to get to the root of the behavior. What is causing the student to act this way? What is it that they want or need? How can I help them get what they are seeking in a more positive manner? #rcstechchat
A8: Talk to them. Small talk. Let them know you see them. Connect with them about something other than your class. Sports, music, anything. Make them feel a little more understood. #RCSTechChat
A8 I try to take more time to have one on one conferences with them. Whether it be about academics or not. Getting to know what they like and making them laugh lets them feel comfortable sharing thoughts or struggles with me. #rcstechchat
A8: I let them know that my classroom is a clean slate - whatever happen before class is done and my class is time for a fresh start. Also, giving them a minute to calm down has helped students. #RCSTechChat
I found myself spending the most time with these students and I can say that I still years later have great relationships with these students and their families. I went to ballgames, wrote back/forth in journals with students, anything I could do to assure them #RCSTechChat
A8: Building relationships and showing love and encouragement have proven the best way to connect with these at risk students in my class. #rcstechchat
A8: Those specific students need the consistency more than anything else. They need to know that your reactions from day to day are always going to be the same. Because they will test you! And that you DO care about them. #rcstechchat
A8 - I struggle with this because I see them so infrequently in art. I try to talk with the students, but also their teachers to see what is going on and how I can help. art is a good outlet for these kids. #rcstechchat
A8. Talk with them privately, go for a walkabout, find out what their needs are. Sometimes reach out by buying them some items that they need, especially basics. Let them know you are there to help no matter the need. #rcstechchat
A8: I like to find something that I truly have in common with the student. They can sense fake. Ex: I have the same shoes as as one of my ATLAS students and sometimes we wear them on same day. That's something I feel like he will remember. #rcstechchat
A8- I’ve got quit a few hard kids this year and I recently made a breakthrough with one. I laughed...hard...at a joke I overheard him make. He’s been trying to get me to laugh again that hard since that day. I’m playing hard to get right now. 😂#rcstechchat
A7-#rcstechchat - Ts have to be willing to take risks themselves in front of their Ss if they want their Ss to do the same. When we do that, it begins to build the trust that we r human, too, & they 4 more 4giving of us. Give Ss respect, but expect their respect 2, nothing less.
A8: Win them with kindness and understanding, sympathize with them, and keep urging them to do better. If all else fails: bring candy. I never hated anyone who gave me food. #rcstechchat
#rcstechchat A8 I have brought them into a conference and discussed successes with them there as well as areas to strengthen. Send a random email or note letting them know you see their hard work, happy attitude, or perseverance.
A8: Caring. It's really hard to go against someone who you feel truly cares about you. Meeting those basic needs and having non-academic conversations lays a strong foundation for learning. #rcstechchat
A8- Earn their trust! Make connections to sports, singers, etc and talk with them about those things. Take interest in how they are doing in other classes. Go to sporting events Honestly, kids are smart. If they see I care, things are good! #Rcstechchat
A8: The most at-risk students need relationships the most. Learn all you can about them. They also need high expectations and consistency. With this, they will thrive! #rcstechchat
A8: Win them with kindness and understanding, sympathize with them, and keep urging them to do better. If all else fails: bring candy. I never hated anyone who gave me food. #rcstechchat
A8 My arena is MUCH different than that in a gen ed class. My whole class is behavior and at risk students. I cannot reason or talk out solutions so I have to resort to very simple tricks. You do this you get this taken away. Very simple. #rcstechchat
A8- again I find common ground with my students and build a relationship to where they will respect me and want to possess acceptable behavior in the classroom #rcstechchat
A8. Talking and listening to them is so important and life changing for both, the student and the teacher. Sometimes, we just want to punish them without looking at the whole picture. There is always a reason for a bad behavior. #RCSTechChat
What a great conversation tonight. I will be sending out the link you must complete to get PD credit shortly.
If you have enjoyed the topic, check out this brief article to read a summary of Hattie's other mindframes. https://t.co/sf6uGBWMtI#RCSTechChat
A8: I send positive post cards home to the student. And I always try to pick those students first. They love getting mail and knowing that someone cares. #rcstechchat
A8 I try to remember that sometimes learning is not the most important thing to them each day. I try to remember some have struggles at home I don't see. Once I remember that, I can connect with them. Respect can breed growth.#RCStechchat
Thank you so much to everyone for joining us tonight! We will continue to have these every Tue night so please spread the word to your teacher friends. Make sure you complete the form for credit! You guys are what makes our district one of the best in the nation! #RCSTechChat
I agree about sharing personal experiences/struggles with students (as appropriate). I want them to know I had to overcome some hurdles to get where I am today. #rcstechchat
A8: I like to find something to connect with them about and talk about that first. I learn from them about what they enjoy, and I listen...hoping they’ll do the same for me. I love finding out what their passions are! #rcstechchat
A8- We run a 5 min “do what you need” game plan (read, sit, head down, pout, etc.) The norm is don’t interrupt others’ learning while doing so. We all need breaks. When game plan time is over, back to action. This works 9/10 times. Empower them. #rcstechchat
A8 after the cool down, I find they student ends up feeling upset they have disappointed me. We always end a corrective conversation with "Tomorrow is a new day and I will be a behavior rockstar." #rcstechchat
Thank you so much to everyone for joining us tonight! We will continue to have these every Tue night so please spread the word to your teacher friends. Make sure you complete the form for credit! You guys are what makes our district one of the best in the nation! #RCSTechChat
a7- showing kindness and being understanding- establishing a positive classroom culture. - establishing a relationship by finding something you have in common with each and every one of your students #rcstechchat
A8- Earn their trust! Make connections to sports, singers, etc and talk with them about those things. Take interest in how they are doing in other classes. Go to sporting events Honestly, kids are smart. If they see I care, things are good! #Rcstechchat
A8 Make them a responsible part of my classroom mgt. I put them in charge of something & entrust them w/ a cool little job where I secretly get them to discover their hidden talent w/o having to put on a show for anyone in the class & that becomes sacred time 4 them. #RCSTechChat
A8 - Figuring out their area of strength and show them the possibilities when they use that strength. They need to know your are going to be there in the good times and the bad. #rcstechchat
A7 Look for opportunities to serve them outside of the classroom. This past summer, we hosted a reading program with our refugee population at their apt complex. It gave us a chance to build relationships that extended beyond just their 60 minutes of daily ESL. #RCStechchat
You are a great example of how to set high expectations and build positive relationships with all students. @SmyrnaMiddle is lucky to have you! #rcstechchat
A8-#rcstechchat - First of all, I don't kowtow to their behavior & still let them know my expectations. When there is a problem, I come back & speak to them privately & make a point of speaking to him/her in the hallway & cultivate a relationship outside of the classroom.
