Megan Hacholski (@megan_hacholski) and Michael Abramczyk (@_on11), along with guest moderators, lead each week with a different focus tied to their strengths and areas of expertise.
Hi everyone! Megan, 8th Science and co-founder of #122edchat, Oak Lawn, IL. I would love to see @MrsAbuRabah and @JamesHeniff here, since they had to listen to my life story today.
Sam Wallace, 2nd year high school Social Studies teacher from WI. Would love to see @froehlichm & @andreakornowski stop by a chat - haven't connected with either of them in awhile! #122edchat
Roman from Ontario, Canada. HS Teacher/Student Success Leader/Agent of Transformation. Great to be able to check in with #122edchat tonight. Pumped for @MrPStrunk and @bmohamenglish who are leading tonight. Maybe @mrbgilson and @bmilla84 will join ;)
Q1: Princess Leia records a plea for help to R2-D2 when she is captured. What qualities must a teacher possess to create a space where students can come to them in a time of need? #122edchat#StarWars#education#safespace
A1: Comes down to the three Rs. Relationships, Relationships, Relationships. If students feel like the adult in the room cares about them, they are more willing to open up to them! #122edchat
A1: Clear expectations and procedures and an organized system to go along with them. Mutual respect as the foundation to ensure all students feel emotionally safe. #122edchat
A1: Consistency. Transparency. Taking time to listen. Being authentic. I'll never forget what @DBlabas once said to me, "Kids come to you because they TRUST you." #122edchat
A1: A T must radiate kindness and understanding in order for Ss to come to them in a time of need. Ss need to feel like the Ts approachable and will actually support/help them! Important to remember what it feels like to be a S. #122edchat
A1- A teacher needs to be fair and understanding. We also need to be open and willing to listen!! Kids feel comfortable when they know there's no judgement. Where they can start fresh everyday!! #122edchat
A1 As with so many things in education, it starts with building that relationship with each and every student. Once we let our walls down and get to know them as individuals, then true magic happens! #122edchat
A1: All classrooms should be safe, welcoming, and have a warm, home away from home feeling for students. When teachers build positive relationships, students will feel comfortable confiding when they need to #122edchat
Q1: Princess Leia records a plea for help to R2-D2 when she is captured. What qualities must a teacher possess to create a space where students can come to them in a time of need? #122edchat#StarWars#education#safespace
A1: Start by overtly stating that you want them too come to you. Ss can get mixed messages from the things we say/do during the day/lesson to others and begin to think we want order more than helping them. #122edchat
A1 Myth = Ts shouldn’t smile till November. Greet Ss at door day 1 w/ smile! Set tone of #ClassroomCommunity & #SharingIsCaring a.s.a.p. Be available real time & via email for kid talk when Ss need it. Let Ss know there are folks they can talk w/ anytime #122edchat
A1: Begin the year by finding some way to engage every student individually. Those small seeds of a first impression can grow to a strong relationship, even when you don’t realize it. They will always remember the you that walked in day one and noticed them #122edchat
Q1: Princess Leia records a plea for help to R2-D2 when she is captured. What qualities must a teacher possess to create a space where students can come to them in a time of need? #122edchat#StarWars#education#safespace
A1 Ts need to show Ss that they can be trusted. Follow through on your actions and own up to mistakes. Ss respect and appreciate you more if you don't pretend #122edchat
A1: honesty, humor, humility, just to name a few. For me I think it helps that they know I'm a mother and I "momma" all of my Ss. Sometimes it is exactly that mother figure they are missing, and that is when they open up to me. #122edchat#starwars
Q1: Princess Leia records a plea for help to R2-D2 when she is captured. What qualities must a teacher possess to create a space where students can come to them in a time of need? #122edchat#StarWars#education#safespace
A1: Listen first and don't blab if not necessary/legally needed. Students need to know they are heard and safe. Let it be known you are there anytime. #122edchat
A1 Teachers have to be all-accepting of the diversity found within their student bod, and not just that in their classroom, but of that in the school. Teachers need to have a connection with students of being a trusted, caring, and open adult to whom they can talk. #122edchat
A1: Compassion, consistency, and clear expectations. Students needs to know that you follow through with what you say, will have a listening ear, and create a system where you do not tolerate hurtful or unproductive comments. #122edchat
I agree to this completely because they will be more comfortable with you! It's also important because you are more likely to get respect from the student. #122edchat
A1 To create an environment of trust with students, you need to build RELATIONSHIPS! You need to get to know your students, let them make mistakes, let them take risks, have one-on-one time. Make students feel special, support them, be involved in who they are. #122edchat
Q1: Princess Leia records a plea for help to R2-D2 when she is captured. What qualities must a teacher possess to create a space where students can come to them in a time of need? #122edchat#StarWars#education#safespace
Q1: Princess Leia records a plea for help to R2-D2 when she is captured. What qualities must a teacher possess to create a space where students can come to them in a time of need? #122edchat#StarWars#education#safespace
Love this! If you build a positive relationship with each of your students, the more they will learn from you. Students need someone to trust before they can open up! #122edchat
A1: Students need to feel safe and comfortable failing. So often students avoid classrooms in HS out of fear of looking “stupid”. when students engage in personalized learning experiences tailored to their needs they no longer avoid class #blendedlearning#122edchat
A1: Mutual respect. Get to know them. Have conversations. Maximize "downtime" to build relationships. Listen. Be understanding. See them as people. Make mistakes in front of them and laugh about it. Show them it is okay not to know. #122edchat
A1: Not only will students be more willing to open up to the adult, but they will be more comfortable to learn in the classroom if they're comfortable with the person in charge of it. #122edchat
Hi #122edchat! Thanks for the invite @MillerMathSMS! It’s a little busy here with bedtime for 2 crazy kiddos, but going to try to pop in for a few Qs. 😊
A1 building relationships key. Talking to Ss in the halls, at lunch, wherever you see them, interact with them. Not so much as a T but as an adult that is interested in them. #122edchat
A1: I know that when I was in high school, I looked for teachers that took time at the beginning of class to get to know us and how our lives were going. #edit2000mane#122edchat
Q1: Princess Leia records a plea for help to R2-D2 when she is captured. What qualities must a teacher possess to create a space where students can come to them in a time of need? #122edchat#StarWars#education#safespace

A2: Well at the top of the list is my amazing educator wife @LBStrunk who always supports me! At work I am incredibly grateful for friends like @ToddRisser and @misskoplin who keep positive mindsets and who I enjoy reflecting with at the end of the day. #122edchat
A2: @megan_hacholski. I have said it before, "Megan is the sister that I wish that I had." Then she reminds me that I already have a sister. :/ #122edchat
A1: Begin the year by finding some way to engage every student individually. Those small seeds of a first impression can grow to a strong relationship, even when you don’t realize it. They will always remember the you that walked in day one and noticed them #122edchat
Why would anyone take advice from someone who has never experienced failure? Or want to talk to someone who doesn’t seem like they can empathize because they are always exuberant? Kids can see through fake. #122edchat
Q1: Princess Leia records a plea for help to R2-D2 when she is captured. What qualities must a teacher possess to create a space where students can come to them in a time of need? #122edchat#StarWars#education#safespace
A1 Having students’ trust begins with planning meaningful lessons and assignments & using every minute productively. These might sound like basic principles of teaching, but when we send the message that our students’ time matters, we show them that they matter.
#122edchat
A1: They should create a safe environment. One that is free of judgement and criticism. Most times kids don't ask for help because they don't want to be ridiculed m #122edchat
A2: My husband is my co-pilot. He just makes everything better.. even mornings when I'm not the best morning person. He just gets me.. and understands the rough days. #122edchat
Relationships are built one 30sec conversation at a time! These can happen literally anywhere & we need to make sure that we are visible to our Ss not just in our own classroom! Recess, hallways, lunch, before & after school etc #122edchat
A2 I feel so lucky to work with a WL Department who is so close. My entire department helps me fly the Millenium Falcon which is a true blessing. I'm also fortunate to have supportive coworkers across the school & admin - even if some don't actually know who I am! LOL #122edchat
A2: My students are my most effective co pilots. They are the most in touch with each others needs and the best at supporting their peers. Not to mention the highest form of learning is when a student can successfully teach #selfdirected#122edchat
A2: Positivity is the key to success in any aspect of life! Your positive vibes will radiate to those around you, especially the students in your class and your coworkers. #122edchat

Had a discussion about this today. We might be the only people "speaking words of life" to those that are around us. We have the power to make a difference. #122edchat

A2: fortunately ❤️ my colleagues, but also can depend on my Ss to make me smile when im@having a bad day. No time to waste being unhappy when we have work to do! #122edchat
A2 My two biggest co-pilots are virtual co-pilots. Thank you to @MrCoachEli and @bmilla84 who are always there for me when I need them. Best cheerleaders, amazing friends. My work co-pilot Julie Champagne. And so many other friends...I am a lucky guy! #122edchat
A2: Yes, I have a fellow coach @ChandraAHMorrow that help me make it through every day. Couldn't do what I do without her support each and every day. #122edchat

#122edchat A2 We All need staff who center and give us balance- creating a culture of innovation and change amongst like minded people... no person is alone
Since I started my career, my instructional assistants have been my lifeline. They support the students during class and they support me in between. I also have worked with some really great co-teachers over the years in my inclusion classes. They get me through. #122edchat
I think it's great to have support from loved one so you are able to reflect on the day with. Also having teacher friends is great to be able wind down with at the end of the day. #122edchat

A1b When I student taught @mertonint under @posickj we would meet the students outside before school on Monday to ask them about their weekend and get their (and our) week off on the best foot possible! #122edchat
When observing classrooms, there are team teachers within each grade level. There were four 4th grade teachers, and they team taught together so seamlessly! They were so supportive to one another, and were able to reflect on their lessons at the end of the day. #122edchat

A2: My friends and coworkers are great. My pets help me a lot too... Nothing like my dog Bogey's affection when it has been a stressful day. #122edchat
My cooperating teacher from last semester (who stubbornly refuses to get on Twitter) puts up with my constant texts, and listens with an empathetic ear. She also knows me well enough by now to know when I’m venting and when I am soliciting advice. #122edchat
A2: I look to my special ed team to help me through the every day stress that comes along with our specific job. But I also looks to some great coworkers who help me realize that what I’m worried about isn’t as big of a deal as I’m making it. #122edchat
A1 - Relationships are the foundation of any teacher/student relationship. The teacher must take the time to learn the interests of each student, how the student learns best, and showing the students that the teacher cares and is always there for them. #122edchat@LindaFarringer
A1- acceptance and caring, Ss know I'm a father first and a teacher second...I listen, I relate, but I never judge or condemn- actually a fifth grader come to me in tears after school and left with a smile-they just need an ear sometimes, humor too @CaldwellElemen#122edchat

A2: I have a great support team in my building from social worker, psychologist, my teachers, clericals. We all work together for one common mission...make the students’ experiences the best and safest possible #122edchat
#edit2000mane#122edchat A2: Maybe it is useful sometimes to have your students be the copilots. Let them tell you what their interests are and try to incorporate some of those topics into lessons.
A1: I am blessed to have a few awesome people in my corner that both support and challenge me- They help talk me down or pull me up- when needed. Wouldn’t be where I am without them. #122edchat

A1 - It all starts with a solid relationship. A teacher has to be patient, throw out the “Don’t smile until December” rule, and show Ss genuine care and kindesss. #122edchat
A2 I have several "co pilots" that get me through the day! @jordansnc@phofmeister & my mentor to name a few! We build each other up & celebrate mutual success! #122edchat
I teach 6th in CA so ancient civilizations is our curriculum > all about culture...we blend the now with the then! So important for kids to get to know each other that way. #122edchat
A2 (cont.) I'm also lucky to have a mom who also works in education & some of her friends are also my friends, so I'm surrounded by people who "get" teaching and the struggles that come with it. #122edchat
A2 @jhweinstein is my copilot in every way – husband, coparent, coauthor, BFF. But he’s not Chewie to my Han. He’s more like Leia to my Han. #122edchat
A2: My wife is my co-pilot. She is my sounding board, my proofreader, my rock. Running would be my other Chewy. I would go nuts without running. #122edchat#runlap
A2.b: My friends pull me through the day, and break me out of my school mode. They help me take a break from those stresses and help me reset! #122edchat
A3: Firm procedures in place that build important routines and allow students to know that there are systems in place for all occasions. There is safety in being prepared! #122edchat
A3: An open ear at all times, and a true ability to empathize without making students feel like their adolescent problems are trivial. PATIENCE is everything. Love them. They will feel safe if they feel loved. #122edchat
A2 - I have two wonderful co-pilots who help me each day. One is my co-teacher and one is my teammate. We are able to share ideas, vent when needed, and are just always there for one another! #122edchat
A2: at home, my daughter is my rock & reason 4 fighting thru the toughest of days; my hubby is the "sane" one, the logical one, the calm one. At school, our 4th grade volunteer (my Mom) helps get all the "little things" done: copies, laminating, etc. #teameffort#122edchat

A2: co-pilots are key to a successful journey. Without our co-pilots we can get off course. I have multiple co-pilots. It depends on the journey I’m on. #122edchat
Q2: Chewbacca and Han Solo are a great team together. Do you have a "co-pilot" that helps you manage the everyday stress that life puts you through? #122edchat#StarWars
A teacher needs to be a compassionate listener who is ready to give their undivided attention to their student. The teacher needs to be selfless and loving so the student knows at that moment, that he/she is their top priority. #122edchat
Yes sir! Our stories connect us- failing us part of life- so let’s share those stories as well as how we rise after the fall- that is #failforward :) #122edchat
The whole reason I decided to become a (French) teacher was because I felt like my high school had a huge lack of diversity and the respect for different cultures. #122edchat
A3: The classroom needs to be organized & inviting. Ss need to feel comfortable asking questions and participating. That all starts with a supportive and understanding T with clear procedures/routines. If you have all this, learning will surely follow #122edchat
A2: My best friend is a former virtual teacher colleague. We have met face to face only 4 times in the last 5 years!! But, we talk via phone every morning. So thankful for her support. Never doubt the power of connection through virtual channels. #122edchat
A3: You've heard of hyper-travel. There's a Jedi skill called hyper-supervision. Know your Ss. Read body language. Get there before it happens. Chat them up & keep 'em positive. Connect early in the day. #122edchat
A2: My wife for sure. But she is also in education so we had to make a rule that we would only talk about school stuff for 20 minutes then we have to move on to other topics. Otherwise we would get no break frog ed “stuff” #122edchat
A3 A safe classroom is a place where true trust exists. Everyone can simply be who they really are without judgement. All are also cheer leaders in life. #122edchat
A3: A safe classroom is a trusting one with solid relationships. It is one where all members feel safe to communicate and stand-up for each other.
#122edchat
A3 To create a safe classroom, you have to focus on creating relationships. You need to have that family community that is created so students know that they have a safe place where they can be themselves, where they can turn to in times of need. Be there for them. #122edchat
A3: A safe classroom is one where the kids know they can express themselves without judgement. Everyone gets a turn to speak, and nobody is allowed to put anyone else down. We also don't avoid tough conversations when we need to have them. #122edchat
#edit2000mane#122edchat A2: Maybe it is useful sometimes to have your students be the copilots. Let them tell you what their interests are and try to incorporate some of those topics into lessons.
A3: Clear expectations, procedures, and a teacher that respects students as people first. All of these things help make a classroom a safe space #122edchat
A2 Every day stress is hubby. He gets me. Many partners in edu-stress are my go-to gals @mrsalisonstein and @slhistmcms I have a few non-twitter stress busting colleagues too. #122edchat
Q2: Chewbacca and Han Solo are a great team together. Do you have a "co-pilot" that helps you manage the everyday stress that life puts you through? #122edchat#StarWars
A3 Fostering a judgement free classroom, ensuring each student has choice & voice, a willingness to laugh & have a fun and a determination to celebrate every growth no matter how small! #122edchat
Side note!! If you haven’t signed up to be part of @remind to “remind” us when the awesome chat is. DO IT!! It has saved me more than once. When I get home it gets busy!! Shout out to @megan_hacholski for setting it up!! #122edchat
A3: seeing yourself as a part of it. I think that is key. This whole idea of connection is hitting me hard today but I think without it all other factors fall short. We need to see ourselves as part to feel included in safe measures. #122edchat
A3: Safe classrooms are places where it’s ok to disagree, bus we can’t talk about important issues w/o that ability. Ts have to be willing to facilitate conversations instead of covering content. #122edchat
Q3: I think respecting each of the children answers is key. If the student is able to participate without feeling disrespected then they are more likely to discuss in class. #122edchat
Q3 For me, my "shield" goes back to being an accepting and genuinely caring teacher - making sure that all students feel welcome to be present in class, share opinions, & talk about important issues when necessary. #122edchat
We use accountable talk in our classroom - you can have an opinion - it can be a different opinion than others. but you have to present it respectfully #122edchat
A2 - My husband is my go-to and voice of reason when needed. Additionally, exercise (more often than not - running) helps me clear my head & destress. #122edchat
A3: Follow through. If kids know they can trust you to do what you say on the little things, they know your serious when you talk about their emotional and physical saftey. If they come to you with a problem, they know you’ll take care of it, or give them the tools #122edchat
A3: Safe classrooms shouldn't feel like a classroom, but a comfortable place for Ss to grow and try out ideas. Be comfortable experiencing successes & failures. #122edchat
A3 A classroom should be accessible to all, should feel like home and should belong to everyone. I always say "our classroom" not "my classroom" #122edchat
A3: Consistent expectations and daily procedures that are taught and practiced. Never assume Ss know protocol or etiquette in your room. Teach them to listen to all opinions and that all voices must be heard. Praise the shy kid to encourage participation. #122edchat
Hahahaha! Terrific, Stephanie! I have @megan_hacholski and Aunt @jpatter222 with their "NO" stamp ready. Most of my ideas are terrible. Speaking of which...hey @Flood1Tracy, when can we do that bonfire? :D #122edchat

A3: feeling physically, emotionally, and academically safe are so important. I love these ideas for emotionally/academically safe in the math classroom by having positive norms (from @joboaler and YouCubed) https://t.co/RSkAYa6adD#122edchat
A2- my wife (she didn't make me say this)...at school my third grade team, but I have tried to reach out and connect with many different teachers to bounce ideas or just veg @CaldwellElemen#122edchat

Q4: When people are asked to name something they know about Yoda they say that he is short and green. If your students were asked to name something about your class that made them feel safe, what would they say? #122edchat
I unintentionally isolate myself from Ts because I make myself available for kids at lunch 4 days a week and I do answer my email way too much...but it works well for me and for kids. I get made fun of...but not by my students. #122edchat
A3: key features-- busy kids doing work they care about. Busy teachers trying to get their timing and pacing just righ following their plans and then improvising creatively. Everyone is empowered. #122edchat
A3: The ability to make the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs?
no seriously... the number one factor in a safe classroom in trust, followed closely by communication. If trust and communication fail, the ship is not going to fly! #122edchat#starwars
A4: When working with Ss who have a full plate & are striving to hang on everyday you have to be on-point. I think I watch my classes the same way I did preschool. Line-of sight at all times. It's exhausting but it pays huge dividends. #122edchat
A3: procedures and plans in place to be ready for anything. Also, the understanding that we all are in this together, good times and bad times they have to know we can all rely on each other to stay safe in any manner #122edchat
A3 - The students need to know that there is no wrong answer. They can share ideas and answers in a safe place. They also need to know that they can come to school grumpy, hungry, sad, or mad and I will be there to help them through it. #122edchat
A3b: A safe classroom is also one that has been trained. CCPS is trained in the ALICE system to be proactive during intruder type scenarios.
#122edchat
A3: Like my answer to A1- #cultureovercurriculum If our classrooms are not a safe place to fall for our kids- it would be difficult to move them forward. Spend the time to build culture. #122edchat
#122edchat#edit2000mane A3: Teachers that aren't afraid to talk about subjects that others shy away from. You don't need to give a personal opinion, you just need to allow moderated discussions when necessary or when the opportunity arises.
Hahahaha! Terrific, Stephanie! I have @megan_hacholski and Aunt @jpatter222 with their "NO" stamp ready. Most of my ideas are terrible. Speaking of which...hey @Flood1Tracy, when can we do that bonfire? :D #122edchat

A4: I would hope that they would say the confidence that I bring into the classroom. I refuse to live in fear and chaos, and it is my hope that in doing so, my students feel the same. #122edchat
A4: They would say that they know that they are heard and cared for, regardless of who they are, where they are from, or what they look like. They know that they are valued and dearly loved. #122edchat
Make sure that you share that viewpoint with her. I am sure that you do, but just in case...praise of your spouse is a great gift to give. Cost nothing, worth tons. #122edchat
A4: respect for each other. We all have to realize we are all different and accept each other’s differences. We all don’t have to be friends or agree on everything but we need to respect one another and treat each other with kindness. #122edchat
A3: Choice, voice and relationships. Ss need to know they are seen, that their teacher believes in their abilities, and that their narrative matters. #122edchat
Hi everyone! #122edchat started in our home district, hence the 122. Since we started last April, it's grown exponentially! We're happy to welcome everyone into our crazy family.

Q4: When people are asked to name something they know about Yoda they say that he is short and green. If your students were asked to name something about your class that made them feel safe, what would they say? #122edchat
A3 Safety in classrooms is about meaningful learning and relationships. It’s about liberation. Diversity. Equity. Solidarity. And FFS it’s not about arming teachers!
#122edchat
I asked a class years ago what they wanted in a sub...they answered "we want them to smile!" I actually wrote that into my lesson plans for subs! #122edchat
A4 They would say it is a fun, inclusive environment, where they have a voice, where they are valued, where any idea will be explored, where mistakes can happen, where we break barriers, try new things. I try to create a true family where we even gather around food. #122edchat
Q4: When people are asked to name something they know about Yoda they say that he is short and green. If your students were asked to name something about your class that made them feel safe, what would they say? #122edchat
#122edchat I’ll do a safe school...of course staff and students are physically safe- for staff... permission to innovate - take risks- be creative- to fail- and given permission to find their greatness- schools cannot be innovative without innovative leadership
A4: I think they'd say my classroom atmosphere. I put a lot of hard work into the decor & really tried to make it fun & motivational. Also, my personality. The Ss really know I'm there for them.. whether it's math help or anything else. #122edchat
A4: Mr. H. always listens, I mean really listens. He cares about what I have to say, values my part of the community, and trust me, even when I take risks.

A3: Firmly establishing the golden rule. Do unto others ... I also like the PBIS rules of respect self, others and property. These simple rules establish a safe environment for everyone. #122edchat
Last week it was lovingly pointed out to me that I said “my classroom” when talking to a student. It has caused a language shift that forces me to really think about what “our classroom” means every time I say it. It’s a powerful concept. #122edchat
A4 I would hope they say that I take my content seriously but I don't take myself too seriously! I yearn to build relationships w/ them & get to know them & we learn something new everyday! #122edchat
A3. A safe classroom is where Ss aren't afraid to use their voice, choices, take risks, try new things. This is a safe environment for them where they know they are welcomed, loved, and are allowed to be unique! #122edchat
Q4: When people are asked to name something they know about Yoda they say that he is short and green. If your students were asked to name something about your class that made them feel safe, what would they say? #122edchat
A4: Students always work at their own pace and never move forward without proving mastery. They only learn content they are ready for #masterybased#selfpaced#122edchat
A3: Understanding, respect, and ownership. Students need to feel that they are a part of the classroom, and that their teacher respects them as people and not just their students. #122edchat
A4 I would hope they say that I take my content seriously but I don't take myself too seriously! I yearn to build relationships w/ them & get to know them & we learn something new everyday! #122edchat
Yes. Family. The missing ingredient that, sadly, many of our students crave. Happily providing that daily for @Simmonsknights1 students and faculty. #122edchat
A3 To create a safe classroom, you have to focus on creating relationships. You need to have that family community that is created so students know that they have a safe place where they can be themselves, where they can turn to in times of need. Be there for them. #122edchat
A4. Any issues , any worries can be dowloaded... she will hear her out. I have heard Ss tell the others..." tell her its OK ,SHES COOL...I TOLD HER ,I TRUSTED HER" its such a blessing to be trusted by the children ...#122edchat
Q4: When people are asked to name something they know about Yoda they say that he is short and green. If your students were asked to name something about your class that made them feel safe, what would they say? #122edchat
A4 I think my students would say that even though I'm very sarcastic and sassy with them, that I genuinely care about them and want them to succeed in life, whether they peruse French or not. #122edchat
A4: when I taught I would say that the Ss would say “fun” and “busy”. I ran my classroom in a center base format. One would hardly ever see me at the front of the classroom. #122edchat
Q4: When people are asked to name something they know about Yoda they say that he is short and green. If your students were asked to name something about your class that made them feel safe, what would they say? #122edchat
A3: The ability to make the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs?
no seriously... the number one factor in a safe classroom in trust, followed closely by communication. If trust and communication fail, the ship is not going to fly! #122edchat#starwars
A4: My humor even though sometimes it could be sarcastic I feel that I laugh with them as they laugh with me and sometimes laughing at me. As long as we’re laughing I guess we’re good #122edchat
Q4: When people are asked to name something they know about Yoda they say that he is short and green. If your students were asked to name something about your class that made them feel safe, what would they say? #122edchat
Q4: When people are asked to name something they know about Yoda they say that he is short and green. If your students were asked to name something about your class that made them feel safe, what would they say? #122edchat
A2: My faith. I spend time studying the word before work. There are certain scriptures that I lean on when I time arise. Isaiah 54:17 Phillipains 4:13 #122edchat
A4: I would hope that my students say that I made them feel safe by encouraging their positive thoughts and exploration of thoughts and ideas. #122edchat
A3: A safe classroom is one where the kids know they can express themselves without judgement. Everyone gets a turn to speak, and nobody is allowed to put anyone else down. We also don't avoid tough conversations when we need to have them. #122edchat
Q4: When people are asked to name something they know about Yoda they say that he is short and green. If your students were asked to name something about your class that made them feel safe, what would they say? #122edchat
A4 - I hope my students say that I am caring. I want them to know that I am always there for them. I want all my students to know that I believe in them and I am always there as a support. #122edchat
A4: He let's us eat if we are hungry, we wear our hats if we want to, if I don't feel like working he gives me space until I do. Maybe these things #122edchat
A3 Rapport! Ss know I'm “Mother & Teacher” (how I start most of my ‘talking tos’ & when I speak as expert on a topic) so kids know I have their back. I'm firm but fair AND compassionate (I hope). Physical environment is what it is. Huddle close, keep calm. I’m on watch #122edchat
A4 On my feedback sheets some Ss always say that my class is fun and they now know how cool science. I also talk a little too fast sometimes and make gestures when I get excited. #122edchat
A4: I've been honest that it's my first year teaching this course, that my background is in History and not English, and that I am writing the curriculum myself. So, I think the kids would say I've made as many mistakes as they have, and we just move along. #122edchat
A3 - We need to remember that classrooms must be structurally safe & secure as well as an emotionally safe environment. Give Ss a voice (& listen!) and remember that we teach children who are supposed to make mistakes. #122edchat
A5: I will be a safe space for my students. I will listen to them, talk to them, laugh with them, mourn with them, and be present with them so they can go into the weekend knowing that there are adults who care about them at school! #122edchat
A4: Ss always say that our school isn't like other schools. Ss say that our school is fun and that they talk to admin all the time. That makes me proud of our school. #122edchat
Q4: When people are asked to name something they know about Yoda they say that he is short and green. If your students were asked to name something about your class that made them feel safe, what would they say? #122edchat
A4: That I listen to them, and allow them to share their thoughts. I allow them to make mistakes, but ensure that they learn from them. I don’t tolerate disrespect towards anyone, and create a culture of support. #122edchat
Isn't that something that we sometimes forget in the pursuit of goals, standards, test scores, improvement? Our kids are kids and people, too. #122edchat
A3: Clear expectations, procedures, and a teacher that respects students as people first. All of these things help make a classroom a safe space #122edchat
And there is nothing wrong in making mistakes when learning. It is awesome that kids can see how to make mistakes, and how to learn and move on. #122edchat
A4: "fun but strict" I hear it every year. I pride myself on it. You can enforce rules/expectations and still be fun/safe. Kids need structure - we've all read Lord of the Flies :-p
A3- I think it all comes down to respect, I might discipline or be unhappy with a SS or the class from time to time but I also demonstrate, model, and discuss how important respect is- being consistent and a man of my word too @CaldwellElemen#122edchat
A4 That’s a great question for a course evaluation. What about this class makes you feel safe? What could your teacher do to make more students feel safe? What could you do to make more of your classmates feel safe?
#122edchat
A5: I will be positive, regardless of external circumstances that may make me feel otherwise. I will listen to their concerns, needs, questions and make them feel and believe that they are important. #122edchat
A5: I will smile. I will laugh. I will probably cry, at least once. I will tell bad jokes and terrible stories. I will make those that I have the opportunity to serve feel like they are the most important person in the world. #122edchat
A4: I hope they would say that Mr. Yenne means what he says, and even though he says we’re amazing kids every day, he means it every time, because he means what he says. #122edchat
A3. Building a classroom community where students feel encouraged to not only learn and succeed but also not be afraid to make mistakes and try new things. #122edchat#troll209
A5- I will try to stay positive evnthough it gets difficult at times. I will make the most mundane task seem like the greatest thing they have ever done!! Oh and we will LAUGH!!! #122edchat
Thanks for joining us tonight for another amazing #122edchat adventure with our good friends, @bmohamenglish and @MrPStrunk. Thank you both for your leadership. Love you both!
A3: My shield is inquiry & authentic engagements. Through powerful books, conversations among our friends, open-ended questions and engagements, my children work together to create an environment in which they feel loved, trusted, and happily learning. #122edchat
A4: my students love my flexible seating and my #BigHero6#Baymax theme. They love coming in to the smell of my coffee every morning because they know that means Mrs. Hansen is here. And hugs, lots of hugs. #122edchat#starwars
Q4: When people are asked to name something they know about Yoda they say that he is short and green. If your students were asked to name something about your class that made them feel safe, what would they say? #122edchat
A5: I teach preservice teachers. Right now, things look dark in terms of the challenges they will face as teachers. I hope to be the light in helping them to remember why they chose this path, and in seeing the hope they will provide to so many children. #122edchat
A5: I will lead by example. Learn and #failforward alongside them. I will be the student I always wished to be modeling & learning every step of the way/
#122edchat
And with some of the kids, it's not built in a year. I'm still fostering relationships with kids 3 years in. When I taught for @KolbAllStars, I had kids that I reconnected with at @Simmonsknights1. That was almost 8 years of work. Relationship building is hard work. #122edchat
Q5: I’ll try to be one of the reasons they smile tomorrow, and provide encouragement. Just showing a little extra love, and being their number one fan #122edchat
#122edchat family it was absolutely amazing to help host this fantastic group! I hope you'll join me tomorrow night at 9pm ET for #waledchat when we reflect on lesson planning! It'll be great!
A4 - Recently, a former student (now 23 years old! 😳) told me she still tells people that I was her favorite teacher because I made learning fun & cared for my students. #LifeGoalsMet#122edchat
A4. I would hope that my Sunday school students know how much I miss them after a week! And how much I appreciate them always willing to try new things with me :) #122edchat#troll209
#122edchat
A5 Choose positivity- no parent has ever filled a complaint to me that a teacher was to nice- be kind -communicate expectations-build relationships and give hope
We dont know what our ss home life is like or what they are going through. Keep that in mind and just show you care and make time for them!! Ask them about their life!! #122edchat
A5 - Tomorrow, I will ensure my students have enough to eat. I will make sure they have a mid-morning snack and one of my students will be made a peanut butter sandwich to eat at lunch. I need to make sure my Ss basic needs are met so that they can be successful. #122edchat
A4: I believe my 1st graders would say they feel understood. Through lots of active engagements and conversations, mutually-satisfying books and shared experiences, we truly get to know each other. #122edchat
A5 My biggest light comes from being kind and spreading positivity. I always try to teach and lead with my heart. I am authentic, I am REAL and I want the best for all my students. They truly become my family. #122edchat
A4 Hmm, I hope they’d say that I care for them and that I’d do anything for them. But educationally, I think they feel safe taking risks in their learning and doing. What they'd actually say is I'm hard but fun > which is way cool by me #122edchat
Q4: When people are asked to name something they know about Yoda they say that he is short and green. If your students were asked to name something about your class that made them feel safe, what would they say? #122edchat
And, in all honesty, it’s not true! I learned very early on this year that I don’t really have any control 😉. It takes all of us to make a functional classroom, so they deserve ownership in it. #122edchat
A4-fun, love, rewards aren't just given but earned, I give them the responsibility and choice in things, I speak using "our class" not my class- in essence we are a school family @CaldwellElemen#122edchat
Q4: When people are asked to name something they know about Yoda they say that he is short and green. If your students were asked to name something about your class that made them feel safe, what would they say? #122edchat
A5 I start off every class by asking my students how they're doing and what they've done since I saw them last. It may seem so trivial and routine to them but on days when someone responds MAL I always follow up with a why? I like to give everyone a chance to talk too #122edchat
A5 I always try to make the learning fun. School should be fun, exciting, they shouldn't want to miss a day because they will miss great things #122edchat
A5
We dont know what our ss home life is like or what they are going through. Keep that in mind and just show you care and make time for them!! Ask them about their life!! #122edchat
#122edchat in a nutshell: Just a passionate bunch of education people hanging out, chatting about their craft, and preparing to be even better tomorrow than they were today.

@NowakRo A5: I don't have kids tomorrow but I am trying to teach them to be revolutionaries so tomorrow at an area PD that has not many options I am going to host #couchpd Be light for others #122edchat
A5-Continuing to preach "Choose Kind" and adding music/dance into class. It's my fav mantra. If we were all a little kinder and not afraid to be "weird", our life would be so much different. #122edchat
A5 I always try to make the learning fun. School should be fun, exciting, they shouldn't want to miss a day because they will miss great things #122edchat
Isn't it funny that kids think you can't see them and the weird things they do in class? My 6ers continue to doubt my super powers. Exhausting and amusing for sure, but that's what kidwatching is about #122edchat
A5: By starting with a smile and high five or hug and ending with a story. No matter what happens in the middle, my kids can count on laughing to start and end the day, everyday. #122edchat
A5 My biggest impact comes when I recognize & remember little things about my Ss that they told me in passing. Those nuggets are crucial for me when it comes to enacting positive force upon them! #122edchat
A5: at least once a week I put a new sign on my door to welcome my Ss - this week says "Mrs Hansen's Heroes have the right stuff to be the best writers at @CaldwellElemen " because our state writing assessment (FSA) is just 2wks away #122edchat
A5: The subtext of this question--Stoneman Douglas High murders-- makes this question feel pre-mature to me. I'm not ready to move on and "be positive". #122edchat
#122edchat#edit2000mane My favorite teacher in high school was Mr. G. He was the band director, and he set up couches and chairs in his office. He always left eh door open when he was working and he had music playing, it was very inviting to build that relationship with him.
A5: I don’t have my own students anymore- so I try my best to “suit up, stand up and speak up” for all students- in hopes of “lighting the way” #122edchat
A5: Light has a dual nature, it is a particle and a wave. Ts have to have a dual nature of meeting academic and emotional needs of Ss. Keeping content interesting and engaging as well as providing a nurturing environment. #122edchat
Aaa5. Smile, Welome Ss, Thank them for coming, listen to their stories that they have to share, ask questions about their families, find out about their interests, see what their doing in other classes. #122edchat
YES!!! Out and about this weekend and found a cute sign that said "Use our Hashtag" - bought for my classroom and put #choosekind on it since I can't wear my tshirt every day!
I want to start adding more music to my class - will get there! #122edchat
A5-Continuing to preach "Choose Kind" and adding music/dance into class. It's my fav mantra. If we were all a little kinder and not afraid to be "weird", our life would be so much different. #122edchat

A5- I let them know I'm fighting for them and I'm on their side... I try to model being positive and demonstrate positive things.. they may not always remember what I teach but I hope they always remember how I made them feel @CaldwellElemen#122edchat
A5 I keep showing up everyday, right? Lol. Whether it’s me or another teacher, for certain Ss we are their routine, stability; they can count on us when home life may be chaotic, uncaring. Learning is The Light; it’s awareness, knowledge, wisdom, action… Light it Up! #122edchat
A5: I've never been good at planning this; it just sort of happens. I walk in every morning with three goals; be kind, be passionate, and do my best. I can't always tell, but I think it comes through. #122edchat
Q5: Remember to follow the light...choose and foster positve emotions over negative. Show passion, compassion and enthusiasm for their work. #122edchat
A5: My light side will def be our science experiences. The kids made lists today of things they need to live & work well as scientists. When they start revealing water droppers, baking soda, goggles, lab coats, food color... from our mystery bags, they will squeal! #122edchat
I don’t have students tomorrow but I will send a special message to my honorary grade 1s in Florida tomorrow to keep spreading kindness. We communicate weekly and share light and positivity. #122edchat
Overwhelmed tonight by the outpouring of support for #122edchat. Beyond thankful for what you all have helped this small #edchat become. Thank you for sharing your voice and advocating for your students! Could not be more proud to call myself a teacher and a member of your #PLN.
A5 I choose to greet the with a smile. When I have to talk to them about the dark side, I make sure to exprès that I care for them and am here to protect them. #122edchat
A4 I always nurtured and enjoyed excellent relationships with my students. We took care of each other and were a classroom community. They were “my kids” and I always worked to support them as people, not just students. I also modeled the “safety” of risk taking. #122edchat
Q4: When people are asked to name something they know about Yoda they say that he is short and green. If your students were asked to name something about your class that made them feel safe, what would they say? #122edchat
A2 My co-pilot is my AP counterpart. We are well matched and respect each other and nurture our relationship in and out of work. She is the Cagney to my Lacey 😂😎#122edchat
A1 Day 1: ask the students what you should know a/o them and their pet peeves. I used to start the year by talking to the students about high expectations with the understanding that we would work like crazy TOGETHER to get them there #122edchat
Its Weds night and I'm lurking on #EdEquityChat & #122edchat tonight. Let's see if I put dkwn the classroom brain and pick up the woodshop brain tod
night...
