#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

Welcome to ! Let’s get to know each other. What do you teach? Where are you? Do you use badges or just curious?
Bonus points if you introduce yourself w/ a GIF representing your thoughts about Badges and our topic tonight: the role of age
Hi I'm Fallon, a preservice teacher tweeting from Grove City College, PA
Hola Fallon! Awesome to have a pre-service teacher! What got you interested in Badges?
I am an elementary education major wanting to learn more about the badge system in the classroom
Welcome! Excited to have you! Highly suggest connecting with for ideas on elem Badges!
I'm a senior majoring in Secondary Edu, History, interested in learning more about badges.
Just learning about it recently in my technologies class! I'm interested to learn more about Badges!
Advocating badges for the world from north of the 49th. Supporting , service hosted in Canada.
Looks like we're starting out small...I know some of our regulars can't make it tonight but this will still be awesome!
Anh (Lurking), used to be the Computer Resource Assistance in a K-6 school. I make badging tools (this is a project acct).
Loving that we have several pre-service teachers! This bodes well for the future! Question 1 coming up...
Q1: What is youngest/oldest we should Badge? Why?
And I just want to say it's Canadian Thanksgiving, so this appearance shows real dedication. 8->
Well I'm grateful! Thanks for giving me some history hw tonight...going to have to read up on how it's done there
: Hi, . I'm here this week. Software developer and community promoter in the badges space. &
For folks new to Badges, lean heavily on (he's kind of a big deal!
Saw that, been trying to figure out what my friends do this day in the frozen Northlands (what I call Canada)
A1: I think it makes sense to start earning Badges in PreK
A1: Probably varies by parent but with good ID protection, I'd agree Pre-K could work!
A1: Starting early can be build culture of credentials AND help teachers have better ideas about who their incoming ss are
A1: I think earning badges should start in K and continue through 12. It gives students a goal
A1: 3rd-4th grade, students may not be able to understand electronic reward system at younger age.
Great point! The privacy word is important consideration that we'll probably come back to on 3rd question...
Super valid concern! Lots of teachers are also issuing physical versions so ss have both. What do you think?
Good call with goals. We know goal setting is a Best Practice. Why stop at 12th?
I'll go as far as 1st Gr. Taught them how to type in K. That's a real badgable competency https://t.co/Bv7lV8KtTg
A1: I think it makes sense to start earning Badges in PreK
A1 Hm; no employability badging in Kgtn. With Alfie Kohn in mind (Punished by Rewards), formative digital badges in Kgtn OK
Great point on competencies. Mind expanding on that for folks who might not know where you're going?
That's a good point. I could use some badges in my college classes!
Let's see how k-12 learning pathways connect to career&higher ed. Break down translation barriers between!
What about on other end of age spectrum? Should earners "age out" of Badges?
That sound great! Being aware that tangible rewards work better w/ some kids than others is super important!
:Definitely not! I'd love to understand how lifelong learner experts in a field continue to engage&deepen understanding
Especially with needs of folks upskilling mid-career for work in new space, do Badges have place in all age groups?
A1 I was just posting about what badges should travel K-6 -> 7-12, 7-12->HigherEd. But not all badges need portability
Badges and rewards are appropriate for any age group!
In , some Ts using a booklet with all earnable Badges outlined and ss get sticker when Badge earned
Competency based badging =/= Hour/Seat Time based qualifier. Learner can either type at X words/min or not.
Q2: How might we evaluate outside Badges for schools? Which Badges do we accept?
Q2: Should earners of different ages have access to the same Badges?
Go with the 2nd Q2! Accidentally grabbed last week's first:(
For example with diff ages/same Badge: If district issues Kahoot Badge, should it be same Badge for earners of all ages?
That's a great question. I say it depends on their culture (formative side) and their needs (summative side).
A2: would prob say that it depends on the criteria and what evidence earner is expected to show.
A2: In many cases, if we're looking a CBE badges then age matter not, only typing 35 WPM, etc https://t.co/3g2uytHjcn
Q2: Should earners of different ages have access to the same Badges?
Perhaps question 2 was great example of question that only makes sense to me...haven't had one of those in a while. Q3 coming
A2 Another good question. Yes, but this may be a case for leveling by age, i.e. criteria/evidence. Longitudinal badges?
Q3: What deeper considerations and questions about age should impact Badge design planning?
I really like your notion of *Leveling*...so earners of diff ages get diff level Badge based on criteria/evidence
A3: haven't had AUDIENCE surface yet. Who do we anticipate earners will display Badges to? Impt ? when meeting diff age needs
Quick outro question 4...
Q4: Let’s reflect! What are your takeaways from this week’s chat?
Thx, worth more thinking about. What's meaningful at 6 yrs may complement at 24 yrs. But earner should choose at 24.
Missed that reply earlier. How could you see college Badges meeting your needs?
A4: Takeaway for me is to double down on importance of criteria + evidence => they will guide/shape age appropriate Badges
We were an intimate chat this week. Thanks to regs for being here!
Huge shoutout to the preservice teachers taking time out of your busy nights! Don't hesitate to reach out if we can support u!
Have a Badge worthy week everybody!
A4 Distinction between & as subset is important for young'uns. More scaffolding, pastoral thinking
Great takeaway! Prob not just for younger ss...worth considering value 4 earners, whether open matters https://t.co/f15yvKpsPj
A4 Distinction between & as subset is important for young'uns. More scaffolding, pastoral thinking
Maybe right, thinking this re transferability of young'un badges up age chain -how many get left behind & is that OK?
