The topic tonight is How Coaches Help Athletes Get Recruited. Recruiting is a crazy business and its important we as coaches are upfront and honest with our players in order to help find the best opportunity for them to achieve their goal #TXHSFBCHAT
Jack Dingus DC at Crooked Oak Hs in Oklahoma City, OK Co Host and Founder of the #hogfbchat I am enjoying Mart vs Refugio on Fox Sports SW! #TXHSFBCHAT
With early signing day and the competition for recruiting classes going into high gear, coaches are valuable resources for our players. We must act as advisor and advocate for our players. #TXHSFBCHAT
@kdawgswift retired HFC / Current AD Gold Beach High School, Gold Beach Oregon. Tonight participating in #TXHSFBCHAT , while @JKatGB63 prepares Honey Shrimp / Rice / Asparagus / Cali Red Wine, & all while watch Texas State Championships! Good times on Oregon Coast with Dinosaur
A1 network them with possible coaches they may want to play for. Allow them to attend games during season and visits. Facilitate any of the needs from either coach or player regarding anything they need film transcripts whatever #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: First I have them fill out a recruit questionaire so I have all of their correct info. I put all that on our prospect sheet for college coaches. I pull transcripts and meet with kids as needed about test scores and gpa's #txhsfbchat
A1: Make sure you understand what their goals are, and be crystal clear with their options, what their size, playing ability, and academics does to their recruitability #TXHSFBCHAT
A1 con't I also meet with the kids to go over how recruiting works. From the odds of playing college ball to what schools are looking for. Things they need to do like register w NCAA eligibility center #txhsfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: With early signing day and the competition for recruiting classes going into high gear, coaches are valuable resources for our players. We must act as advisor and advocate for our players. #TXHSFBCHAThttps://t.co/ya8eX46tt0
A1 identify prospects early (frosh yr) set up support team of parents , counselor and coach. Initial mtg focus on decision to play immediately put athlete in different path than 99% of other students. Focus on process, recruiting cal , social media and honest eval #TXHSFBCHAT
A1) Our HC stresses signing up to the NCAA clearinghouse, making sure you're making A's and B's in class, and understanding not everyone can play D1. Lower level schools are just as important. The goal is to get a free education and not go into debt. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: We also stress the importance of the athlete doing his part and reaching out to coaches. Take the time to send film and make contact. All of which can be done for FREE #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: Gold Beach is unique in that we are very small (145 students) but still play 11 man football. So freshman are with us from beginning -very different from big city ball, so we will have annual seminars & classes during our Zero Period to blueprint process each year #TXHSFBCHAT
A1) fill out form so I have correct info, talk to parents, stress/hammer home grades & SAT, take to college spring practices or game, show them what a weekly schedule would look like for a college athlete- they have NO clue time commitment it takes #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: We stress to our athletes and parents that the do not need to pay anyone to get their kids recruited. Hudl and Twitter have been a great free option for athletes to use to get recruited! College coaches do not use scouting services! #TXHSFBCHAT
Along with most all of this, we encourage our kids to go to camps over the summer. We live within 4 hrs of several D-2 schools with a couple of NAIA as well. This lets coaches see them first hand. Also warnings about social media #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT coachfisher_rp: A1: We also stress the importance of the athlete doing his part and reaching out to coaches. Take the time to send film and make contact. All of which can be done for FREE #TXHSFBCHAT
A2 be a sounding board for them and be honest if they ask a question give them your honest opionion. Make sure they understand what they are getting into #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: kdawgswift Educating the freshman is so important. It is tough to recover from a bad academic start to their high school career! #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: 1st and foremast, stress grades and SAT/ACT score. Then work ethic - weight room, can-do attitude. For my OLine guys, If they have the tools and desire to play on, I'll intro them w/programs we agree they're a good fit for. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Discuss what are good camps and which are not. Advise to be smart about which college camps they attend. If you weren't invited to a D1 camp by a coach, your basically donating money. Attend camps where you will get evaluated by college coaches #txhsfbchat
@txhsfbchat A2 have to be very careful! Always go back to established opportunities with a proven track record but also important to get kids infront of the schools that have true interest. Try to help them sift through the “mailers “ and real recruiting #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: I have them fill out a questionnaire that asks all players if they have any aspiration to play beyond HS, now based off that I will then talk to them about how they are working towards that goal whether it be in the classroom or their performance on the field. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: we steer them away from recruiting services, for pay 7-in-7 leagues. Camps on campuses hosted by that school not the Nike camps and stuff like that #TXHSFBCHAT
You would be amazed how much money people spend on recruiting! I am in awe of it! Our job as coaches is to eradicate recruiting services and educate parents and student athletes! #txhsfbchat
A1: New to the recruiting game, I try & talk with as many coaches that come through as possible. Biggest thing I've learned is clear communication is VITAL in the recruiting game. Our HC does a great job neworking w/ college coaches & introducing them to our players.
#txhsfbchat
So true every year - we start with NCAA & NAIA Grade & Course Requirements, SAT / ACT Dates , we go over the importance of GPA & work ethic in Life! Cannot be a C Student with C habits and expect to hit a switch & become an Champion Athlete. Life is not that way kids #TXHSFBCHAT
A2- I started doing home visits w/ all my freshmen parent this winter. Grades are first but also tell parents about our program. I make sure to cover recruitment/camp scams. First bit of advice I give them- if they want to play college ball get on college campuses #TXHSFBCHAT
A2 kids often ask about recruiting services a "Coach" from a service will hit them up on twitter. They come to me and ask who the coach is. I quickly determine they are a service and advise the kid to save his parents money. I do everything the service does, for FREE #txhsfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT RoyCash66: Along with most all of this, we encourage our kids to go to camps over the summer. We live within 4 hrs of several D-2 schools with a couple of NAIA as well. This lets coaches see them first hand. Also warnings about social media #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: I show them the video of Urban Meyer where he mentions he will listen to a player’s HS coach b4 he listens to a camp coach / recruiting service, as long as e communicates he wants to play college FB I will work my tail off to make sure he gets the chance #TXHSFBCHAT
Coach, I yhink thats like eradicating barnacles off the bottom of a ship. When there's money to be made, certain types of people will latch on to try to make it.
Parents can be wishful thinkers, and these "services" tell them what they want to hear. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Meetings Parents & Kids & discuss the predator nature presently as far as Recruiting & Camps. Because of our track record (2-State Titles) they trust us. We have to prove ourselves daily. We also run a huge Team Camp-Coaches used to be able to work it - no mas #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Q3: How often do you meet with the athletes who are actively being recruited and those who aren't but are still seeking to play? #TXHSFBCHAT
A3 once the season is over. I'll meet with the seniors nearly everyday. This includes those being actively recruited and those looking for a chance As we get into spring I will start to meet with underclassmen ahead of the spring recruiting period to advise them. #txhsfbchat
A3: We keep an open dialogue with our players so they let us know when coaches contact them and what they are being told. We also let kids know about opportunities like the free @SRfbshowcase to be seen by more schools #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: I try to touch base with them on a weekly basis, which is pretty easy to do since I have most in one of my classes that I teach in the HS. I just want them to know if they have any questions I’m here for them. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3 : depends on the time of year. Contact periods it is multiple times a day for athletes being recruited . Try to get a summary conversation at the End of every week and keep accurate notes for all recruits. Regardless of level it’s the same goal #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: My personal opinion, with @HudlFootball and other technology, if you’re a player, coaches will find you. Players can help themselves by attending the college’s camp. Haven’t seen much benefit come from recruiting services or pay to play 7on7.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Continued - Participation in a Camp has to be run by us first so we have an opportunity to be honest with parents & kid. We prefer Camps held at College Football Programs - Not the other kinds whatever they are called #TXHSFBCHAT
A3) Don’t have regular meetings but text or talk to when needed. Still trying to find a couple kids places to play. They know I have an open door and to call or text whenever. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4 answer their questions to the best of my ability and be honest you want to promote your program and players but don’t want to send a dud to a program #TXHSFBCHAT
A4. I am brutally honest with the coach about a player. I tell the player and parents. I will never lie to you or for you when it comes to recruiting. My relationship is of vital importance to our program I can't lie to them and expect them to come back in the future #txhsfbchat
A3: When we get to be with the players daily, I️ try to talk w/ each of them on a weekly basis about it. I️ know for most of our kids, it’ a very important thing going on in their life, I️ want to get a feel for their expectations.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A4) Give them GPA 1st and foremost. Don’t want to waste their time. Have to be honest about the kid. Don’t want to ruin relationship for future kids. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: I’m completely honest with college coaches, I let them know the intangibles they aren’t going to get from watching film. How coachable the player is, what kind of student they are, how he represents the community bc potentially he may represent their program #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: You give an honest evaluation on who you have. I sometimes give coaches that are borderline to let them make the call. Just because I don't know if this one kid fits his scheme or not. Also, I'll give them guys to put on their list to watch.
A:4. Tell the truth. Don’t want to ruin a relationship with a program or mess up an opportunity for someone down the road by selling someone fools gold now. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4 HONESTY . Always give recruiting vitals sheet then honest eval of on CHARACTER , field ability, football IQ, mental and physical toughness, academics, off season commitment, leadership, other sports and then ceiling . Always the truth #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: Our year round Zero Period - Seniors stay in through graduation - allows us to meet daily with our potential & recruited athletes. One of the real advantages of small rural programs #TXHSFBCHAT
A4 Cont: I don’t want to try and pull the wool over any college coaches, I want them to know when they recruit someone from r program it’s like $ in the Bank 4 them bc they will represent their program well and do all the little things that it takes to be successful #TXHSFBCHAT
A4) Sell your kids! Make the introduce themselves to as many coaches as possible, no they all can’t play for every coach that comes by but they learn how to introduce themselves for later in life. Have test scores and transcripts ready! #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: Be Honest & do not waste their time! As a former collegiate coach & having coached in HS in SoCal at schools with lots of DI athletes, be HONEST! If you waste their time or lead them astray they'll never come back #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: I️ am a firm believer in being honest with players, parents, and coaches. I️ think a lot of bad happens when there is poor communication or little transparency. If I️ lie about a kid today, will that coach come back tomorrow?
#txhsfbchat
A5 I try to sit in on convo's if they occur on campus. If not I ask the kid what they're being told. Then I follow up with the college coach to get their take on the convo. That way I know exactly where the kid stands with the school. Then clairify any misconceptions #txhsfbchat
A5: I tell them a lot of coaches will over promise and under deliver and be leery of programs where you’re getting that vibe from. Trust their gut and do their homework on the schools / coaches that are looking at them. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: Our HC will call and talk to the coaches recruiting our players to hear it as well. That way we know exactly what is being said. Honesty and clear communication are key #TXHSFBCHAT
A5) I tell our kids have to look at college as a 50 year plan not 4. Does that school, city, state, etc fit their plan or not. Basically make an informed decision not an emotional one. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: Trust should have been built between you & your athletes over the time they are with you. Use that trust to be honest about what CFB is, what it entails, what they should truly expect etc. Finally tell them CFB is a marathon not a sprint to become starter #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: Make them aware of the nature of college football and coaching. Emphasize commitment to the university first and the coaching staff second. #TXHSFBCHAT
Being in Texas I don’t believe the general kid fb population realizes that you can play D3 athletics. Tx kids have no idea the opportunity is there #txhsfbchat
It truly is in a lot of ways the best level of CFB in my opinion! Far less abuses and kids playing are truly student-athletes. Draw back is cost of Private education (vast majority of schools at that level) #TXHSFBCHAT
I believe the next trend we are going to see in college fb is Big time kids going d3, getting snaps, graduating in 3 years (dual credit and AP credit) and going grad transfer for 2 years at D1. Why not get snaps early at a real institution? #txhsfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT coachfisher_rp: A5: Our HC will call and talk to the coaches recruiting our players to hear it as well. That way we know exactly what is being said. Honesty and clear communication are key #TXHSFBCHAT

HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Q6: How do you build trust with the parents so they know we are doing everything within our power to help their child? #TXHSFBCHAT
A6) I’m hoping home visits as FR will pay off down the road. Constant communication. Answer questions or assist in process anyway I can. Planning on having college/recruiting seminar in the spring. #TXHSFBCHAT
A6 be open to talk to them and be honest with your insight some won’t take it but many will see you are trying to do the best thing for the student #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: With my dudes, OLine, we're a pretty tight bunch. As a position coach, I'm their sounding board. Our HC provides more 'tactical' advice. He's much more versed in that area. #TXHSFBCHAT
A6 Be open and honest with them. I let the parents know they can call, email, meet with me anytime they feel the need. I've been fortunate to be at Spring for a while and I believe I have earned a reputation in our community that I help all kids as much as possible #txhsfbchat
A6: The theme of the night is honest communication. Establish early with the parents you are an advocate for the player and have their best interests. Promote your kids via social media and other methods so parents see you following through #TXHSFBCHAT
I recently started a YouTube channel for this very reason... to help athletes, parents, and coaches better understand and navigate the collegiate recruiting process... here is a link... this channel is and will always be FREE https://t.co/ZIuCcw8O3Q#TXHSFBCHAT
A6: LOL Win consistently in all aspects of your Program not just on the field- in classroom, in community service, in school & class leadership. Also in small town (1800) we are neighbors, see each other weekly- gotta prove it daily but wouldn't have it any other way. #TXHSFBCHAT
A6. con't Social media is a big help. I am always tweeting about a school coming by or that I talked with a college coach. It lets the kids and parents know I am grinding trying to find an opportunity for the kid to realize their dream #txhsfbchat
Thank you to all coaches for a great start to #clinicseason on #TXHSFBCHAT Congrats on your seasons! Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! See you in 2018!
