#2ndchat is a Twitter hashtag that can be used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other second grade educators from around the world. Every other week we will discuss a different topic. It's a great way to help grow your PLN (Professional/Personal Learning Network) and share ideas with others.
#2ndchat Favorite Rainy Day Game is indoor snowball fight with cotton ball and whiteboard/chalkboard (if those are still around) I draw pic on board the smaller the part higher point fun for fun or review game
A2: In my last year as a classroom teacher, I ended up leaving more digital learning resources for the Substitute. I also would leave choices for the sub too. Some subs loved that - some not so much. In my early days-plans were very scripted. #2ndchat
#2ndchat A1 - create google slides with skip slides and print for sub to have/ project. Interact with kids by posting messages of common routine words, or directions with fun Bitmoji /Emojime (more elem appropriate)
A1 Sub plans are all online. I use https://t.co/pZ6H2uRBus and put links for all I do in them. Subs love them. Sometimes I leave videos for the kids or lessons. #2ndchat
A1: I try to keep my day as normal as possible. I keep reading and math centers because it gets the kids moving every 15-20 minutes and the sub can focus on teaching a small group at a time. :) #2ndchat
A1: I used to make super detailed lesson plans for the sub to the T with tons of resource packets.. Now I tend to be more exploratory creative type days with students.. #2ndchat Also templates are the best.
A1: When I first started teaching, I was told to leave LOTS of review paperwork to keep them busy but I found that to make the sub's and kid's day hard. #2ndchat
We can't leave our computers logged on so the sub do not have access to them at all. They can't even sign in on our network. #2ndchat I can email them the plans but they won't have access digitally. #2ndchat
#2ndchat A1: I also use to leave tons of WS for Ss, now I have hyperlinked Google Classroom activities or SeeSaw Activities for students to choose from when they are done.
A2: I tend to look for activities that have a low floor high ceiling in terms of outcomes.. something where everyone will be applying skills, have things to do, and No Excuses why they didnt get something done #2ndchat
A2: I love @nearpod for my students. I can leave the code and students know how to complete a lesson. The sub can just go around and help those that need it. #2ndchat
I was walking around when we were doing sight words today... I thought why not kiddos so had them get up and moving while cycling through words together. #2ndchat
A2: Leave common activities/games you do with a new skill. The sub can teach it! :) #2ndchat Using a great picture book with fun extensions is a great sub plan,t oo.
A1 S choice through activities in google classroom, @Seesaw activities. I usually have a google site with a variety of activities for content areas. No more busy work worksheets #2ndchat
A2: My saving grace for a sub was having a regular routine with stations: Daily 4 with Reading and a Daily 3 with Math. Kids knew what to do even if I wasn't there, because of trained backup activities of what to do when you were done. #2ndchat
I always appreciated the detailed plans when I was subbing (back in the hey day!). I would try to leave detailed plans for my subs because of that reason. #2ndchat
I've wondered about the login access too. When I've left plans that have involved sharing something online with the class, I've had a colleague login for me. Not really the best plan, but sometimes necessary. #2ndchat
I pulled out the writing as it's own beast. I stuck with rotations for Word Work, Listening to Reading, Independent Reading, and Read with a Buddy. Writing just needs more attention than what you can give it within the reading workshop time. #2ndchat
And we rotated through those EVERY day with only a few special event misses. I think that's a critical component to keep in routine and building reading stamina. #2ndchat
Fun & lets the students know you are still pay attention while away! I skyped into the classroom one time as I was at a conference. Kids were a bit surprised. #2ndchat
We can't have a sub using a computer logged in with anyone's account since our attendance/grading system is accessible. So we have leave work the kids have access to instead of a teacher. #2ndchat
I also like that that edtech has gone from the Sacred Hardware to just another learning tool that needs to be respected. #2ndchat Helps to have a wife and great TL to check on them at the end of the day.
A3: Students can access chromebooks and tablets even with a sub present. Sub could only use the interactive portions of the Epson projector. No Hovercam to project papers. #2ndchat
A3: My students have access to our Chromebooks. We are not 1:1 but have enough fo a small group. So each group could have a Chromebook or they can move in stations. #2ndchat
I totally get that. Our LMS is a separate login so I didn't have to worry about that. #2ndchat Student privacy is something that we need to all think about now a days. #2ndchat
I find that most Subs WANT to teach - they would prefer to do that over reviewing material. Sometimes my plans would change knowing who my sub was going to be. #2ndchat
Sometimes I regret comp being 1:1 as its such an easy go to option. With less, you had to delegate strategize to guarentee access amongst other things. #2ndchat
YES- this is a BIG problem. We have to get a student to download the projector app & then they can log into the computer so the doc camera can be used. #2ndchat
Google Classroom: Schedule assignments for the day you will be out. Seesaw Activities: Menu to work through and complete. Flipgrid: Video assign task and teach mini lessons. Hyperdocs/slides: Blended Learning. #2ndchat
A4: I think edtech allows you deliver content and activies personally with diff to students in groups as well. Great to assign different reading passages, math assignments or projects to students. Also like Lanny said to provide feedback when youre not here is great #2ndchat
Teacher computer (one that is hooked up to projector) so that the sub could share websites or videos. I had an interactive projector so we'd do a lot with that. #2ndchat
A4 I'm using one tomorrow-I have a google site with many different types of snowflake activities including unplugged, that Ss can choose their activity. I also have linked in Google classroom digital breakouts and @Flipgrid questions. #2ndchat
Sorry I have to leave #2ndchat - I love this topic and this group! Thank you for some ideas that I will def be sharing with my colleagues. :) Thanks for inviting me! Have a great night.
#2ndchat Chat A4: symbaloo for student choice of coding activities or any activity for that matter.
Post when I'm done choices in Google Classroom (differentiated)
Q5: How has GSuiteEdu (Google Classroom) assisted in substituting your teaching? Or Substitute your favorite LMS in there (hehe its a punny joke) #2ndchat
First graders.. 28 of them.. old Windows Comp lab.. @Symbaloo was amazing.. one home page to rule them all.. 45 minutes logging in down the less than 5. YES! #2ndchat

A5: Google classroom has made it so easy to share resources in ONE place. My kids are always working on some type of story/report so Google Drive is great. :) #2ndchat
A5 Being 1:1 it's a game changer. I leave plans but my Ss can access everything in Google classroom. Ss are doing productive learning instead of busy worksheets #2ndchat
A5: GClass has really allows to create the assignments in a deliverable format.. attach links for templated activities, content creation and submission. No missing papers or no names..Feedback is wondeful too. #2ndchat
The scheduled assignments and resources is magically because it drops when you need to. .I can also drop in flipped videos to demonstrate something or share some info with the kiddos. Makes it the source #2ndchat
A6: It is fun to leave vocabulary charades. AND I've already mentioned it but leave centers/workshop for reading and for math and they get to move a lot. It helps so much. #2ndchat
A6 Hi 2nd chat! I also will let the sub know students are allowed to move around the room/ sit on the floor/work where comfortable, as they do daily. #2ndchat
#2ndchat A6: Physical Activities
Dojo Mindfulness Videos/Techniques, GoNoodle Activities,
Spelling Sparkle, Sitting exercise [sittercize]: do a variety of arm, leg, foot exercise while
remaining seated. [Use music]
then depending on their self-control standing
A6: If you can, have them access @GoNoodle songs as well.. We have #SparksPE so we easy to follow indoor games you can play too.. Brain breaks in sub plans are helpful. #2ndchat
A6 I will also do a scoot, where they move the cards from table to table...or I'll tape the cards around the classroom before I leave, and they walk around with clipboards...#2ndchat
I did it most days. Some lessons just called for a whole group experience. I usually started off with a Number Talk of some sort or introduced a new game.Math with Technology was an assigned app or Math tech activity with Seesaw Mon through Thurs.Friday was Free choice. #2ndchat
Math with Partner Mon-Thurs were assigned Math Games or Centerlike Math Tasks that could be an extension of what I taught at Math with Teacher. Math with teacher was whatever concept we were working on, but based to the needs of the group. #2ndchat
#2ndchat A7: early on let them know you care for them, make expectations clear, and most importantly make them responsible for the own actions!
I always say in 2C we build each other up not break one another down. We are a family!
Hope you got some great ideas... I have sub for next week to plan for. But I am evaluating NGSS curriculum for our district. #2ndchat Thanks for coming
A7: I think teachers do a disservice at the beginning of the year if they dive into curriculum too soon. Setting up classroom routines, expectations & a classroom community at the beginning pays off all year. #2ndchat
A7: Routine and reviewing skills like empathy and welcoming a special guest. I mean Subs are like inviting a guest into your home. We review how to treat them. #2ndchat
Well thats all folks! Thanks for the great #2ndchat hope we all got something out of it and planning is so much easier. I know teachers dont call in because sub plans are even worst than planning/teaching for the next day.
