Good evening, and welcome to #EduAR ! I am so excited that you are here tonight! Please introduce yourself and share one thing you would like the world to know about your students that can’t be measured by a test.
Good evening! Welcome to the #EduAR chat! I am one the founders, along with my edusistas @nortnik and @Lindsey_Bohler. We are excited to have @AmyBraswell726 as our guest moderator this evening!
Our mantra for #EduAR is "Connecting for Kids". We are better together, and we must grown a network of professionals who support us! We all get better when we all get better! @nortnik@Lindsey_Bohler

The pressure of high stakes testing can suck the life right out of a teacher, but our kids are counting on us to bring the joy every single day! It matters to them! Here’s Q1:

A1: We are free from short reactions, irritability, and negativity. We leave things at the door and bring our teach on in a big way. We greet, high five, hug, smile, celebrate, challenge, and LOVE. Every. Single. Day. #bringit#EduAR

A1: I hung out at the front door and greeted every student with hugs and a song. I loved them BIG and they knew it. Those #relationships didn't die just because I retired from school in May; those gasps when I see them out and about tell our story! #eduAR
A1 I stand outside my door, smile, and say "Good morning!" to the students (mine and others) passing by. I hold doors for them. I ask them about their day. I try to communicate care and concern, making each one feel valued. #eduAR
Tell them
Listen to them
Believe them
Encourge then
Build them up
Pray for them
Show them how to fair - tell them about your failures
Show them how to struggle - tell them your struggle stories
Show them how to celebrate others - celebrate THEM!
#EduAR
A1. Students can spot real vs. fake quickly. Being genuine and giving praise, a high five and taking an interest in them as people are powerful ways to make a difference. #eduAR
A1: A school should reflect the love, joy, and compassion we all share for our students! The saying is true, “Students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care!” #EduAR#teachArkansas

A1: We treat what we do as a passion, not a paycheck. It isn’t a job, it’s a calling. Testing season is rough, but remembering the WHY is sure to bring joy to the educator heart. #eduAR#JoyfulLeaders

They sure are. They know when an adult is put out with them, and it can crush a spirit. We hold some major power...we must always use that for good. #EduAR
With screen time dominating our children’s lives, there are fewer and fewer opportunities for students to utilize their own imagination. This inhibits their ability to visualize, comprehend, problem solve and think outside of the box. Here’s Q2

#EduAR
A1) I love meeting the kids as soon as they step off the buses in the morning— hugs, high fives, “good mornings!” all let them know “I see you; I’ve been anticipating your arrival; and you’re safe here.” #EDUAR
A2: For my class, I encourage them to be creative on projects and think outside the box/standard responses. Build up their work when students are creative. #eduar
Whatever you do....don’t use the dreaded “T” word. This will be on the TEST. You have to know this for the TEST. I need you to do your best on the TEST. Switch out for the word LIFE. That’s what matters most. #eduar
A1: kids can tell who wants to be there! A good attitude, prepardness, notes, smiles, hugs, ask them questions and get to know them personally... and speak positively with other adults in the building... some days these are easier than others, but always important!
A2: providing opportunities for them to be creative is a good start; when we put a jigsaw puzzle out, our son puts his phone down! Games like Ticket To Ride and Catan also spark his interest. Might work the same in school; what's high interest and engaging? Do that! #eduAR

A2 Last Fall, I had this in the bag with some amazing story starters. Kids were SO excited to share their writing each Friday. This semester, we're working mainly with math concepts, and I encourage thinking outside the box with number talks. It's been harder w/math. :( #eduAR
A2: It starts with showing them something relateable and then opening thier minds to something different. Look at the kid in Memphis that built a fusion reactor in his garage. Inspirational! #EduAR
A2: I love “silent lessons” for this. Very engaging for enrichment. Bring in a random object. Say “I have this” and nothing more. Watch Ss fill in the blanks! It’s -! It’s used for—- It might be a—-! #EduAR
A2: Provide opportunities for them to explore, design, create, and produce throughout the day. STEM activities are a great way. Also go outside with them and play at recess with them. #EduAR
A2: Give them the opportunity to design, build, explore! Let them be free to try something new and maybe even fail a time or two. #pinewoodmakerspace#eduar
A2: They might like to sit in a box, but we sure can’t keep them in a box regarding their creativity! They need choice and we must know them so we can help them build off their gifts and passions. #EduAR
A2: allow them to have input into their learning. Acknowledging their ideas and giving them the freedom to try new avenues, will help build their willingness to want to do a good job. #EduAR
Q2. We must show them the world beyond the school, city, state—and beyond. We must make them hungry to know more and excited to go discover the world. Then make it better! #EduAR

A2: Share your passions, discover their passions and provide a safe environment for risk taking and discovery!!! Student voice—- hear it, listen to it, act on it, let it lead the way #geniushour#pasaionprojects#passionbasedlearning#EduAR
By believing what you say! We have to be excited about the content! We have to celebrate their amazingness. Finding ways to embrace their smarts (art, word, self, people, music, nature, body and numbers) then teach to them.
But, finally, my truest love - #SEL! #EduAR
They know they are loved and respected, because they are told they matter, they are hugged, listened to, and taught until they understand . I want every Child to feel like they are a gift to our classroom. I try to make learning fun and challenging every day.#EduAR
Yes! I put a United States floor puzzle in my social studies center and it was the most popular center. They chose that over so many other technology centers. #EduAR

A2: To invent, be innovative, or create the time must be dedicated for students to “be” in this mindset. We have to sometimes simply provide the opportunity. #EduAR
A2: We need to allow them time for choice reading and researching their interests! This doesn't include writing a paper about what they find! Let them explore and fall in love with reading to learn! #EduAR
Yes, we definitely can show students we are invested in them via zoom. Mine now always love asking me about my week and day. Their positivity/encouragement really make the day. #eduAR
The Science of Reading is making a big comeback in our schools and we expect our test scores to prove that we are on the right track. Literacy is one of the greatest gifts we give to our children. Here is Q3: #EduAR
A2: be cautious and intentiontal with screen time at school and plan for time to visualize, write, draw and create! It’s always the best time of our day! They soak it up. #eduar
Give them a problem and let them brainstorm how to solve it. My 1st graders found a solution to our mosquito problem, which had kept them from recess for over a week! They used innovation, creativity, and imagination to design a bag tag they could sell in our bookstore. #EduAR

Yes, @bethhill2829 my students always get to decide and research their most interesting topic from a time period. The students always love it more when it’s theirs. They own it. #eduAR
A2: I liked adding “odds and ends” to my block center and watching how they were used. Old nuts and bolts, clips, lanyards, paper clips, just anything and see what it can become in the hands of a child. #EduAR

Yes! This! I use @thedailycafe Daily 5 and cafe! I also pepper them with appropriate books that are silly and whimsical. Let me tell ya, I’m like the Pied Piper of Book Reading. If I want them engaged, I need only open a book and begin reading. #eduAR
Yes, @bethhill2829 my students always get to decide and research their most interesting topic from a time period. The students always love it more when it’s theirs. They own it. #eduAR
100% YES!!!! Reading provides kids with an escape from their reality, a stress reliever, a time passer, and an opportunity to explore and develop their interests. #EduAR

Sometimes my ESL class will go off on a research tangent because they are naturally curious about something (often unfamiliar because of the language). It's the BEST!
A3 I share my excitement for reading, recommend books, and schedule time for students to share their books with each other. One of my Autistic students has been reading a book I suggested for most of the year, and he is almost finished! He has been BEGGING to read. :) #eduAR
A3: I love sharing books that I enjoyed as a child and sharing with my kids how I remember someone reading it to me or buying it for me and what made it do special. Choosing the right kind of books that are quality literature can show kids how great reading can be. #EduAR
A3: Talk up the books!!! Listen to the genres kids are into and buy those books! Sometimes it gets so exciting we have to post it note a reserve lists...which makes them more exciting! #EduAR
A1: Our students know we genuinely #LoveTeaching when we come to work with energy, enthusiasm, and new ideas. They know when we excitedly talk about a cool new lesson we created, when we nerd out over some detail or activity. Our love shows. Kids can tell. #EduAR#edchat
A3: This is an area I continue working on. Right now, I have been sharing simple historical documents that have a twist, trying to see a different side. #EduAR
Q2- Be creative with learning, engage them, allow kids to discuss and share their thoughts. Get them thinking beyond themselves, and globally about the world they live in. Engaging them in great literature and writing. Teaching should be fun, so learning is exciting.#EduAR
A3: I love how teachers' knowledge of the science of reading is supportive of all kids' reading development! We MUST remember that continuing to immerse them in quality literature, have choice reading time, and talking about books is what makes them fall in love with it. #EduAR

As the Dir of Curr & Inst I don’t have a class per se; we do have a book review that @VirtualArkansas shares monthly when we celebrate our T of the Month, S of the Month & Facilitator of the Month; I also ❤️sharing books I’m reading w/ my Ts &encourage them to do the same #EduAR
A3: Jumping in late!! Reading is one of my joys! Tomorrow we are wearing pajamas and having a read-a-thon for an hour! The goal is to read 1000 books or 10,000 pages in the school during that hour!! #fprangers#EduAR
The Arts are the perfect tool for awakening and unlocking the true potential of our students. Learning experiences that integrate the arts inspire and engage students in ways that worksheets and test prep never will. Here is Q4!
#EduAR
A3: I share what I'm reading with them. I want them to see that I read because I love it. I talk about my favorite books and I let them share their favorite books too. #EduAR
A2: When we allow time and space for art integrated into content classrooms, we allow creativity to grow. When we allow more choices and for students to develop their own mastery products, we nurture imagination. #EduAR#edchat
A2. A safe environment is fundamental; where the teacher supports unusual ideas, provides choice, uses creative strategies encourages multiple interpretations and solutions and provides constructive feedback. #eduar
A3: Talk about books! Talk about yours, theirs, the lady down the hall. Let them explore themes, language, and emotions associated with books. Let Ss share what they love about books! #EduAR
A3: I'm a BIG fan of the read aloud; here I've got most of these Kindergarten Ss engaged with Ruthie and the {not so} Teeny Tiny Lie. Draw them in with a puppet or a quick question: Is Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers a thing? Then let the magic begin!
#eduAR
Let me tell ya, there is nothing more engaging then a 44-year-old woman rapping! If you don’t believe me, ask me! I’m a singer, I love it. So, we sing often. Just today we started to learn “this is me” so we can become empowered and read lyrics that build others up! #EduAR
A4: I want to see more of this!!! I need to work on modeling this more for my teachers; many of them will play music while they are waiting for the next zoom; we have explored cross curricular activities between the humanities and art #EduAR#workinprogress
A3: Even thought don’t teach reading I try to discuss w/my Ss when see them reading.💜 me some @jk_rowling , Shakespeare, The Great Gatsby opened my world to F Scott Fitzgerald...My 10th graders are reading it now #eduAR

A4 I need to work on this more, but I am going to brag on a colleague who had our students write and perform a song about the digestive system. The kids groaned at first, but they enjoyed it and learned so much! #eduAR
A4: Historical Music in my lessons. We recently did a WWI song “Over There” and the students loved it! It was a whole new type of music for them. I also use historical art/prints for class discussions & content support. #EduAR
A4: music is a window to thoughts, fears, and emotions that kids aren't maybe able to articulate. Music makes connections. Arts provide for student expression and communication. It's also fun!#EduAR

A3: As adults, we need to share what we are reading and let them see us reading. Students need opportunities to read books that interest them. Create experiences that get them excited about reading! #EduAR
A4: I continue to use Animated Literacy with my Intervention kids as it ties music and drawing in with literacy learning and it hasn’t failed me yet! So engaging and multi sensory. #EduAR
A4: Historical Music in my lessons. We recently did a WWI song “Over There” and the students loved it! It was a whole new type of music for them. I also use historical art/prints for class discussions & content support. #EduAR
A4 I love playing music that goes with the time periods we study in social studies! It makes you feel like you are in that particular time and place and allows for discussion of the mood of the time period too. Also allow for fun recorder “baby shark” spontaneity #EduAR
A3: We are all reading The Lemonade War as part of the #onedistrictonebook program. The kids love talking about where they are in the book and what is happening. #eduAR
“Authentic student achievement cannot be measured just by test scores, but also by the small day to day moments of each student’s individual triumphs.” Learning triumphs often occur after a failure or mistake. Here’s Q5!
#EduAR
A4: We have a partnership with Crystal Bridges that bridges artists into the classroom. Music in the classroom as students are working brings calm and peace! Flocabulary is a fun tool too! #EduAR
A3. Imagination must be built on a foundation of understanding. One cannot imagine how the world might be if one does not understand how the world is. And nothing fuels imagination like learning about parts of the world beyond our everyday experience. #eduar
A4 I love playing music that goes with the time periods we study in social studies! It makes you feel like you are in that particular time and place and allows for discussion of the mood of the time period too. Also allow for fun recorder “baby shark” spontaneity #EduAR
A4) our English teachers teach students to convey literature through tableaux; our science teachers explore the science of sound; and our counselor plays music in the cafeteria at lunch (and the kids LOVE it!). #EDUAR
A5 we learned about “The Learning Pit” during a staff meeting. It’s such a great metaphor for giving students permission to struggle. One of my kids drew her own version the other day #EduAR
A5: Let them know it's ok to fail, it's even more ok to figure out why something failed and fix it. Often the learning stops at failure. We have to show them that there is always something to learn, something to share, and something to do to reach a goal. #EduAR
A4: my current background music is still The Greatest Showman soundtrack 😍 I love using music/raps for math terms and concepts too! We have an amazing music teacher that helps engage our kids in making music @LauraPoPollard ! #eduar
A5 Model it! Admit mistakes or when you do not know something. If a student is hesitant to answer, I comically say, "When was the last time a bomb dropped in this room because of a wrong answer?" I emphasize the process or path to learning, not final destination! #eduAR
A4: I use music and chants with our phonics. It makes a huge impact! We also love to design and create using our 3D printers. We made our lessons on kindness come to life when we created Kindness tags and sent them to other schools around the world. #EduAR
A4: Use music as memory devices...positive rotation is to the left counterclockwise...I tell them to channel their inner @Beyonce & remember...to the left to the left everything you own in the 📦 to the left...I’ve got others 🙃 #EduAR
A5 - this is my heartbeat. We fail big from day 1. We talk, debrief and get raw. We talk about growth mindset and for the rest of the year they quote this graphic: #EduAR
A5: We have to model a growth mindset for them and show that it’s okay to make mistakes! Sharing our lives with them, successes and failures, is so important! #EduAR

A5: We must teach Ss about Fixed and #growthmindset so that they know that we are all a hybrid of both. Only then can we slowly get them to choose growth, to fail forward with grace, to celebrate their mistakes, to learn and grow from them.

A5- We must have a culture in our classrooms where failing is okay and understood that it is getting you closer to a solution. Failure is not just okay; it’s great! We must teach our students preseverance! Real problem solving takes time and lots of trial and error. #EduAR
A3: I give book talks, display new books, loan out my recent reads, create book clubs, give 15 mins each day for independent reading, & gush when kids tell me about a non-required book they are reading. A high-five for reading? Yes, indeed! #EduAR 📚

A5: Owning mistakes and providing an example for students. Today I found a mistake on a questionwritten for students. I apologize & corrected the wording and class continued. Mistakes happen and how we grow from them make the greatest impact. #eduAR
A5+
Also, the first time a student says, “I can’t!” We have huge ceremony where I kick “can’t” out and he is banished for the rest of the year! He’s looking pretty sorry by now #EduAR

As much as I hate to think about it, as the test draws closer, kids can sense it, stress can rise and tension can run high in the classroom which can cause conflict. We must cultivate families of learners who support and encourage each other. Here’s Q6!
#EduAR
Growth mindset must be modeled by the adults in children’s lives. We have to be comfortable making mistakes, and openly express our imperfections, so our students feel comfortable making mistakes. We are all a work in progress, and our kids need to see us embrace that. #EduAR
A5b: It's also important to teach Ss about the power of YET:
Yearn.
Embrace.
Try.
Head.
Heart.
Hands.
Don't jump straight to try, b/c try has some prereqs!
Set YET goals with small steps, milestone markers, going slow to go fast.

A6: By remembering that that everyone is going through things we don't know about...everyone has a struggle. We mustn't judge, assume, be short with, or ignore anyone...kids and adults. It only takes a moment to share a little kindness. #EduAR

A5-This is an area that I need to build. We encourage, build up and celebrate. But, they are so malleable and tender to helping others at this age. My next tackle needs to be about serving others and being kind! #EduAR
A6: We show it in our words and actions. Our counselor has been doing kindness shoutouts over the intercom. Kids love that! We have a kindness tree where the Ss can place pink and red hearts that each mention a kind act they witnessed or had done for them. #EduAR
A5: our counselor read this book to our kids recently. It’s a great growth mindset book! We have to send the message that we value the struggle and mistakes that lead to deeper learning! The struggle for us is that usually takes more time, but it’s worth it in the end! #eduar
A6: #Kindness has to become a way of life, your school's lifestyle, if it's going to be alive and well.
Make it intentional; encourage the kind of kindness that's not convenient, that's not comfortable.
Stretch students' kindness muscles and enJOY the climate change!
#eduAR
A6- All of our projects help our school or community so our core is “kindness” or care for others!!! Kids loooove helping others! Here is a picture of our kids doing interviews with a local nursing home for their pageant. Such a sweet time for everyone involved. #eduAR
A6: We look for examples among our students and share when we see them being amazing. Our counselor does an excellent job reocognizing students showing kindness. We encourage RAK ...the are fun for everyone! #eduAR
I could not have said it any better! We have to teach them to extend grace... to assume the best about people. @bethhill2829 we were just talking about this yesterday! #EduAR
If I could like this five or six times, I would. This year I have it my mission to talk to each student about their week each time they are in class. That positivity and smile are a lifesaver for so many students. #eduAR
A6 Besides being helpful and courteous, I began shout-out notebooks for teachers to brag on colleagues throughout the year. I try to anticipate needs and meet them. In class, we finger clap and high-five a lot! Use social media to acknowledge successes! #eduAR

A6. We teach our kids that listening is part of being “ready to learn,” but it is important to go one step further with regard to this vital life skill. In my classroom, I teach my students how to “listen with their hearts” from day one. #eduar
A6- Kindness is an expectation. I model kindness, and we talk about it often. When a child chooses to be unkind, it is addressed. Unkind behavior comes from an insecurity in that person, so I try to help that child feel loved, cared for, and I extend guidance and grace.#EduAR
A6. When I taught 11th grade, we went around the school, district & community to get video clips of people saying “You can do it!” Then put together a music video to show prior to test. We must fill our students with hope & confidence then teach them to pass it on. #EduAr

Look out! Next week we are bringing two dynamic leaders to #EduAR! @laffoon_jon and @GinaRich_1111 are leading a convo about building a culture of innovation. Mark your calendar!
A4: I use arts-integration strategies such as mixed media, tableaux, and readers theatre with my high school students. #EduAR#KennedyCenter#artintegration

A6. If I plan to teach about kindness, I better be a kind person myself! We all know that Ss are watchers & copiers, whether we like it or not! When Ss see that we treat others kindly, it makes a huge difference in a number of ways! #eduar
I am blessed with an amazing team. We break bread together daily and sometimes @Stephan62003886 cooks! They also help with resources, encouragement and laughs! @ajohnson1710#EduAR
A7 She's not on twitter, but for her heart for children, Sarah Forrest at CJHS is inspirational! For my own child and so many others, @LatteTania and Alicia Barnard have provided much-needed humor within their classes. There are too many magicians to name! #eduAR
A7 #eduAR So sad I’m late to the party!! We do staff shoutouts each month at our character assemblies! I also want to give a shout out to my “magical” principal @Passmor3Shannon for always believing and encouraging the students and teachers.
A7: @MindyMarg is another one. Her organization skills are what I dream to have when I grow up! She is the most efficient and effective person I know! So blessed to learn from her everyday! #EduAR
