#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
Welcome to #worldgeochat! Tonight is our annual gift giving chat in which we will be sharing our favorite things from 2018. Please take a second to tell us who you are and where you are from. #worldgeochat
Ed, 7th grade world geography teacher in the suburbs of Chicago. I can’t wait to hear about all of the awesome things you have been doing in your classroom this past year. Definitely looking for new things to try in 2019!
#worldgeochat
HUZZAH! It's the most wonderful time of the week (and year!)!!! Sam here from MA, 7th grade worldgeo and 1/8 of moderation team of #worldgeochat! I'm so excited for tonight's chat!
Hello #worldgeochat!
Chris from Illinois - one of the #worldgeochat moderators.
This is honestly my favorite Twitter tradition - the WGC Grab Bag of ideas!
Welcome to #worldgeochat! Tonight is our annual gift giving chat in which we will be sharing our favorite things from 2018. Please take a second to tell us who you are and where you are from. #worldgeochat
Joanne from Missouri! 7th grade world history and 11th grade modern global issues. Looking for new ways to infuse geography into my curriculum. #worldgeochat

A1 My biggest success has been a far smoother as well more effective, implementation of the 2nd year of our new curriculum. Piloting last year was rough, yet this year has been light years better. I have definitely regained some confidence that was lost last year!
#worldgeochat
A1: Completed my first year of APHUGE in June with an amazing pass rate on the exam. Began fine-tuning this fall and feel as though I am in a good spot with the course now. Added the 4th AP Social Studies course to the department on Monday! #worldgeochat
A1) Lot of successes. Probably the biggest one of the year is to grow in my profession. I struggled so much last year. Terrible about this time a year ago. I made it through and a better teacher because of it. #worldgeochat
I finally am playing the Monopoly game for World Shipping/Globalization that I created. The students are having more fun and learning deeper than I hoped. No one has even mentioned Winter Break this week in class #teacherwin#worldgeochat
A1: Really implementing @classcraftgame into instruction. I use it just about every day as an incentive system as well as the other features. Also, I feel I've been more on top of students checking that out instead of my curriculum (-HP for not paying attention lol) #worldgeochat
A1
Favorite success:
Bringing @EoinColfer & @AndrewDonkin to my school to talk about *Illegal*
I never had realized the power a graphic novel could have to change students minds about a complicated topic!
#worldgeochat
A1
the last two years I've strived to include more ss choice in how they show their learning and I've seen returning from slides to skits to home made models, and digital breakout created by a 7th graders.
#worldgeochat
A1 This was a tough year, breaking my foot in early March. It really cramped my style. But my favorite thing was covering more of ancient/Medieval Africa. We played a trading game they just loved. #worldgeochat
Ken from Western Oregon University & Center for Geography Education in Oregon. Here briefly, before I have to take my daughter to a choir concert #worldgeochat
I finally am playing the Monopoly game for World Shipping/Globalization that I created. The students are having more fun and learning deeper than I hoped. No one has even mentioned Winter Break this week in class #teacherwin#worldgeochat
A1 Related to geography, probably my favorite success was taking teachers to Quebec City & the surrounding area on an geo education institute this past summer #worldgeochat
A1b
Implemented single point rubrics as a standard assessment tool. And assessed ss work as approaching/meeting/exceeding the standard
a great way to get ss thinking how they can improve their work
#worldgeochat
A1: I overcame my fear of Mystery Skype. My students did great and we learned together at the same time. It was amazing and I can't wait to try it again! #worldgeochat
Always interested! Thank you! Haven't used Google Earth Pro. It was only recently back on our list of acceptable websites. I do address the later in my 11th grade class. #worldgeochat
That sounds really hard (and amazing) but I have been thinking about re-thinking how I grade. Do you have any resources that you used for inspiration? #worldgeochat
A2: I have 2 big goals for 2019. First, I want to have more independent student inquiry as opposed to guided inquiry. Second, I want my students to take action and share more with authentic audiences. #worldgeochat
Digital breakouts are the best. I created a couple I'm proud of in 2018 too. I like that their sweaty hands don't rub off the numbers/letters on the locks like when I used to use physical locks #worldgeochat
A2) I really want to bring in more geography goodness into my Modern World History class. It is right there for the taking. I just really want to find ways to have kids grasp that idea. #worldgeochat
A2: Work with more basic knowledge on country/cap/physical feature identification and advanced writing skills.
Plan on using Seterra for this, what do you all use?. #worldgeochat
A2: Implementing Adventure Paths into my games to provide deeper challenges for those that need the extra push or those who want to move up the leaderboard quicker. #worldgeochat
A2 At the risk of quoting Aaron Rodgers, I need to R-E-L-A-X and slow down and realize we’re not going to fix the whole curriculum right now and that everything doesn’t have to be perfect #worldgeochat
I did it last year and it was fun but we got beat by third graders! I was so embarrassed. Now that I have some perspective and experience, my students were way better prepared this year! Plus it taught me those third graders were really well prepared! #worldgeochat
Have you had students hack the Google Form? We have had this our last few digital Breakouts. We resolved this by having students have to explain how they got to their answers. #worldgeochat
1)We just finished up totatlitarian governments and read the book V for Vendetta. We had basic skills like "compare and contrast" "identify patterns and relationships" & "make connections and inferences." We watched the movie as well. #worldgeochat
A2
My goal for this year is to have more assessments - not tests and quizzes - but assessments to figure out where I'm succeeding and failing. It's currently my greatest weakness.
#worldgeochat
Everything on @cultofpedagogy is GOLD! Follow Her on twitter if you don’t. Brilliant ideas to improve student achievement that anyone can change in their class and implement. #worldgeochat
A2 To continue to challenge myself I do a better job of learning how to incorporate ethnic &indigenous studies (& settler colonialism) education thru a geography lens. Facilitating an institute on that this summer #worldgeochat
A2 At the risk of quoting Aaron Rodgers, I need to R-E-L-A-X and slow down and realize we’re not going to fix the whole curriculum right now and that everything doesn’t have to be perfect #worldgeochat
Yes!
I like that you can have a variety of answer choices. I created two this year with Google sites and forms.
I definitely thought of them as #grit strategies and problem solving practice more than content delivery. Kids were engaged and loved them. #worldgeochat
I'm right there with you. Is this in the form of feedback? Do kids care about feedback? Will I constantly be grading? What about students that have struggles explaining through writing, oral augmentation, or organization? (All my questions!!) #worldgeochat
2) I asked them to show me they could do those 3 skills. Anyway they could between those 3 sources: book, movie, and totalitarian governments that we learned about. I had videos, papers, slides, @Screencastify and a few drawings. 1st time kids had ever done this. #worldgeochat
In reply to
@CHuckeba, @eric_falls, @Screencastify
A2: It would be really nice to actually pass the National Boards, but I teach too much geography and not enough history for their liking/rubric scoring #worldgeochat
The only cheating I encounter is when hints are shared at lunch. Honestly mine are so challenging if they succeed at all, the deserve something. I can't help that my mind is complex and puzzles make me happy #worldgeochat
If I had permission to not grade and only give feedback, I would. And then there is the time factor. It takes time to grade and give feedback, and that's something none of us have.
#worldgeochat
A2 Might be getting a student teacher next semester. Looking forward to learning from someone finishing their official schooling and starting their profession. #worldgeochat
A2
more explicit vocabulary instruction and inquiry
We did a lot of guided inquiry first semester. Really want to see ss develop their own
#worldgeochat
A3: Far and away my favorite lesson was my Chopped Globalization lesson. It was inspired by @JillWebs blog post here https://t.co/qwna2xaHgZ If you haven’t checked out Jill’s blog yet do it! It is filled with social studies awesomeness!
#worldgeochat
I didn't use it as content delivery, but it does force application mixed real world scenarios/information/crazy news stories. It's a good end of unit review #worldgeochat
Yes, yes, yes! In terms of time, add in self-reflection and peer feedback, and sometimes, they've said it all--will cut down the time factor for T.
#worldgeochat
A3: Ss got to choose one 1840s reform movement and create a historical analysis of its impact up to the present day. At the end, no presentation, they had to have a conversation abt their learning w/ me. One suggested next year a gallery walk w/ all projects. #worldgeochat
I wish! That is definitely on my must see list! We haven't decided where we are going yet this summer. We will be venturing down to Siesta Key, Florida over spring break. #worldgeochat
A ss created an anime cartoon with four characters giving a tour of an ice cave in China LoL, persuading others to visit. It was very creative and was something the ss was very into. #worldgeochat all bc she had the choice
A2: My goal/resolution for next year is to get my life back in balance. I have been doing way too much school stuff lately (approaching burn-out status: crispy around the edges) and my people at home miss me something fierce. It's time to recenter. #worldgeochat
A3 I've been really proud of the @googleearth lessons that I've put together. I've gotten a lot of really positive feedback from students and observers. #worldgeochat
I like using Expedition Unknown with my geo students. One year, Ss did a @joshuagates comic exploring the 5 themes of geography. Pretty neat. We will get there with my new group. I love giving choice. #worldgeochat
I'm doing gallery walk presentations tomorrow with my students. I love the format, but the time crunch is real. Students will be providing feedback using @Seesaw#worldgeochat
A3 My favorite lesson was when I introduced river civilizations with a picture book version of Langston Hughes' poem, "The Negro Speaks of Rivers." Simple language, powerful message. #worldgeochat
A3 Did a lesson w/ 3rd & 5th graders teaching civil rights & mapping using the Negro Motorist Green Book & Ruth & the Green Book. Great student engagement & so many questions from them! https://t.co/sPb6oRgWbZ#worldgeochat
A3 I think my favorite lesson is something my kids showed me leaving my old school. It’s ridiculously corny to say that, but i wrote about it, i had so many great moments cementing so many great relationships. Sentimentality is not my thing but I opened up #worldgeochat
If you focus on projects...i.e. a final project at the end of a unit...and have checkpoints along the way that you can give feedback on...and those checkpoints build into the final project...kids love the feedback. #worldgeochat
That's why I use @Screencastify to differentiatiate for kids. I will also give them choices in how they get their knowledge across. Doing a screencast appears to be pretty popular with mine. #worldgeochat
In reply to
@SamMandeville, @cheffernan75, @Screencastify
A3: I had a series of mini lessons on developed vs developing nations. Students were completely engaged and asking questions/talking about it at home - and it was the end of May, which is basically a miracle #worldgeochat
A4: My 2 favorites have been Quizlet Live @quizlet which I started doing Quizlet Live relay races, and Google Tour Builder. My favorite website from this year has been Dollar Street https://t.co/INKUx7WyGa#worldgeochat
Answer 3: My favorite lesson in 2018 was my “Change the World Project” where ss implemented and created solutions to problems they saw in their environment/community/world #worldgeochat
I can help you with some of that. If you have skills Ss need to prove they know, connected with standards, you can use a rubric as part of your feedback. I've got some ideas that may help. #worldgeochat
A4: Google Sites. It has allowed me to build an immersive game world that functions like a hyper doc on steroids. I can store all my resources through links there & kids move at their own pace. #worldgeochat
A4 I’m pretty sure I discovered @geteach in January 2018 so I’ll say that’s the best new one for me, but @playfanschool is still my tops digital tool overall #worldgeochat
A4 To be honest I've been using Google slides like Swiss Army knife in my class. Perfect place for collaboration, creativity, curation, etc. #worldgeochat
A4 I’m pretty sure I discovered @geteach in January 2018 so I’ll say that’s the best new one for me, but @playfanschool is still my tops digital tool overall #worldgeochat
A3) But I also love doing my Chopped projects with students. I did 2 geography classes last year and we did a cooking competition. So much fun. #worldgeochat
It takes your Quizlet set and creates a multiple choice study game that utilizes investment, power-ups, and reducers with the goal of either a group or individual students trying to make the most money possible. It’s a riot! #worldgeochat
A3: My favorite lesson was a Differentiated Time zones stations activity that I didn't have time to make. I loved this lesson because my A block made the stations for the rest of my classes. It's my favorite because we made it together. #worldgeochat.
Google it an take a look! Basically takes your class into somewhere random with 360 travel view. I use it to teach folk/pop culture and cultural landscapes. #worldgeochat
A5: Both come from our stereotype unit. The @newsela A Mile In Our Shoes text sets as well as this Dateline clip on stereotyping were invaluable when we tackled the issue of stereotyping https://t.co/48H2REPsVX#worldgeochat
One of the most interesting Quizlet Live variants we've heard about so far: Simon Says. Many thanks to #QuizletAmbassador@SrtaLisa for this super fun idea!
The thing that always bugged me about the traditional rubric is I felt like it became a checklist. This helps facilitate the discussion of "how can this be improved" "what can you do to move over a column?" #worldgeochat
I've got a collection for #worldgeochat, Twitter ideas I come across, Comic books that I want to use in class, items for my PGP, comics I want to read, and a few other basic things. I also have one for curating my tabs that I leave off with at school if I'm busy. #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A3 Getting a chance to speak with @JTGWorld, @Weegee and Mark Goodman in our #80s class this semester. Each share their stories of the decade. Also, looking forward to 2019 to put together new cultural conversations with classrooms throughout the world 🌎!
A4 Posted this earlier but thought I would put it in tonight’s #worldgeochat File is here: https://t.co/7E9ModM4ex | Video Export/Import kml via google earth for web. https://t.co/aaUUmGDNIS Not a finished product. Just a working idea I've been noodling with.

A4: I use Google Classroom all the time, but I think my new favorite Google Add-on is Orange Slice Teacher Rubric maker/grader. I am using it to grade A Long Walk to Water Projects, and it makes grading so much faster! #worldgeochat
A3
way behind. Fav lesson, probably geography of a pencil and geography of our closets.
Rainforest hero stressing awareness about deforestation and sustainable living.
#worldgeochat
Yes!!! Students tell me what they are preparing but can't tell anyone else. They start fibbing the other students. Little misdirection. Seri much fun. #worldgeochat
I used to really embrace rubrics, but they DO become a checklist and are like a closed rather than open question. For projects w/o rubrics/checklists, some Ss go way beyond what I might have expected.
#worldgeochat
A5 debuted the EU Meghan Trainor parodies (from my own YouTube channel) for a new school/new kids and was a little unsure, but they loooooved it #worldgeochat#shamelessselfpromotion
A5: I would have to say the 5 themes of Geography: Fortnite edition! My students saw geography in a whole new light, and it helped my connect with many of my students. Plus it was funny! #worldgeochat Thanks @cheffernan75 for sharing it first! https://t.co/AiLWsCkhQ7
A6: As always #worldgeochat leaves me so inspired each week and I’m so thankful to all the guest hosts this past year as well as all that participated. You all have helped to make me a better teacher!
#worldgeochat
A6: Without a doubt, @USMSpark! So many great Ts & presenters! I couldn’t rave about this conference enough & I’m going back this summer & hopefully presenting! #worldgeochat
A5: Best PD of 2018 was @NatGeoEducation's online "Connecting the Geo-Inquiry Process to Your Teaching Practice" Course! It was fantastic! I got to meet so many inspiring teachers and got a better handle on helping my students TAKE ACTION! #worldgeochathttps://t.co/uw2TTqPa32
A6 Teachers from all over the district presented on strategies and lessons they use to engage and teach all kinds of topics. @DrTinaEllsworth#worldgeochat
A6: Besides #worldgeochat (which is my favorite by far), I really loved the Giant Map Training I just completed through SEAMAGNET and the Massachussets Geo Alliance. I am super excited to check out the @NatGeo Giant Traveling maps and bring them to my school!
A6 Actually...a session I presented on Google Geo tools & Arts & Culture. Attendees were let loose to explore after brief intro and loved it--best feedback I've ever gotten on a workshop. And...so fun for me.
#worldgeochat
I have to bow out, my friends. You all are the absolute greatest! Thank you all for everything you do! Happy holidays and happy new year! #worldgeochat
A7: Books for the social studies! I highlighted some of my faves from 2018 here, but would love to explore more in 2019! #worldgeochathttps://t.co/OKe79CWqy0
Well folks this is the last chat for 2018. Thank you all so much for joining us tonight! I know I learned a ton and I can way to use these new resources and strategies with my students! Thank you all for sharing and happy holidays!
#worldgeochat
My gift to you all before we leave tonight. A quick activity that might fill some time between now and the end of the week. Your students can fill them in any way they want, cut them out and build them! https://t.co/BBehX5K7SC#worldgeochat
