#Satchat is a weekly Twitter conversation for current and emerging school leaders that takes place every Saturday morning at 7:30 EST. Co-founders and co-moderators are Brad Currie, Scott Rocco, and Billy Krakower. #Satchat's mission is to expand educator's Personal Learning Network (PLNs) that in turn will promote the success of all students.
Who's with us this morning?!! I am so excited to moderate today's #Satchat as we discuss creating digital citizens. Let's do introductions!
Please tell us your name, where you're from, what you do and the name of someone you'll be celebrating tomorrow on Mother's Day. Go!

Morning, #satchat. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado where I hope we embrace literacy in all its forms -- including digital.
Good morning! Lisa from South Jersey. I teach HS English. This chat was suggested to me by @HillMrispo, and I’m very excited to say that this is my first chat! #Satchat
A1 our job as teachers is to prepare our students for their future & that includes digital citizenship. We show them how to be the best version of themselves in all areas why not online? #satchat
Thanks, Scott!! This #PLN has definitely helped me prepare for the change!! I always leave these chats with something new & thought-provoking. #satchat
A1: The word “interconnected” says it all. This is a new shared habitat. Do we want symbiosis with mutual benefit for all, or do we want hostile, parasitic environments that deplete a majority to the benefit of a few? In this digital age, be a dung beetle folks. #satchat
A1 Students can begin now to elevate the level of discussion, practice civility in discourse, and use the digital world’s tools to connect for learning, sharing, and helping others.
#satchat
A1 The digital world is part of their learning environment, essentially an extension of school, and it will likely be part of their work environment. Students need to know how to exist there. #satchat
A1: The digital planet is huge! Full of possibility, opportunity, learning, & fun! Schools are the perfect place for Ss to learn the basics of online communication & exploration. We want them to digitally-behave w the same respect & safety that they do in our buildings. #SatChat
A1. Respect, admiration and listening are as important in the digital world as they are in the real world. Schools need to teach students to be good digital citizens because these qualities are best delivered at the stages of learning, which schools are responsible for. #satchat
A1 I think this is obvious. If we make the assumption that all kids are digital experts, then we have failed them as role models and educators. If we don't teach/model appropriate behavior, digital or physical, they will invent their own. #satchat
A1: When every moment of life has the potential to be a meme, understanding how it impacts our digital footprint is crucial. Kids don't get this, until we teach it to them. #satchat#HackLearning
A1: There are so many amazing things on the internet, but so many traps as well. We have to teach students to be cautious, smart, analytical, and kind in order to effectively navigate the digital world. #satchat
A1 My Digital Citizenship #digcit page https://t.co/fgqNBzsEww We (students, parents, educators & community leaders) need to work together to make sure everyone is a good citizen in our digital world. #edchat#edtechchat#satchat
A1: Many schools talk about raising productive citizens and digital citizenship is a growing part of that with more and more of our lives being spent and work being done online #satchat
RT ClassTechTips "Good morning #satchat! Following along this morning and excited to see so many of you at #TCT18 on Friday :) https://t.co/wGgkFw3TQI"
A1: When Ss leave school (everyday, every school) they should have a set of skills they can apply to their world. Digital is their world, we need to teach the good and bad #satchat
A1) In the middle grades, students don't always have the reasoning skills to understand the lasting impact of their behavior on social media. Digital Citizenship curriculum is a vital first step in teaching them that #satchat
A1: Ss need to learn how to communicate safely and responsibly. They need to be reminded that #KindnessMatters when collaborating online the same as with face-to-face interactions. #satchat
A1: We need to specifically teach students the skills we want them to display. Good digital citizenship skills do not just naturally happen...they are grown. #satchat
A1: There is teaching, but experiencing and learning from experiences I feel is more relevant in DigCit. More like a sport. Ss don't understand consequences until they experience them. #satchat
A1- if the education world doesn’t teach the, the dark web people will. We must educate them on the good and the bad. And, for the sake of all@that is Holy, teach them primary and secondary sources #SatChat
A1 We should’ve been teaching citizenship all along. The only difference is where it happens. Kids need to know that there’s responsibility online just as much as face to face...if not more #Satchat
Q1: The digital age expands beyond use for social purposes. Businesses and professions are taking over. Ss need to learn that their digital face is as important as their in person face. What you do online represents you as much as what you do in person! #Satchat
A1. Character education is essential in building up the next generation. We live in a connected world and must prepare them for the world they live in. #satchat
A1 Schools establish norms of behavior for everyday public life and this is no different. For 21st century Students digital life is everyday life. #satchat
A1 Our Ss will work and play in a digital world. Teaching them skills to function safely and appropriately in that world is paramount for their current and future success. #satchat
A1: We need to specifically teach students the skills we want them to display. Good digital citizenship skills do not just naturally happen...they are grown. #satchat
Also if you're new to my #satchat activity it typically involves agitating the status quo. ;) So: Stop Teaching Digital Citizenship. -> https://t.co/V5HJuP5hsl
A1: Students need to understand the impact of their digital footprint and how they interact with the world is documented. We do them a disservice when we fail to prepare them for their future. #satchat
True Tim! But in how many schools is digital media, like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, or Twitch banned? Why not make class accounts to share the amazing things our students are doing and give them control of what is being pushed out, with teacher moderation #satchat
A1: there is a whole different type of normal than there was just 10-15 years ago. Students need to be aware of so many different levels of what it means to be a digital citizen. From evaluating truth va fiction to realizing what they are sharing #satchat#notfakwnews
1A. The same reason we teach character traits in the classroom. Our students could know every piece of content we teach, but if they can't be respectful of others and participate and contribute positively to society it won't do them any good. #satchat
A1: We must model and teach Ss to know & understand the impact their words & connections have, & teach them to use technology responsibly, as it is the communication vehicle of their future! #satchat
A1: Expectations without modeling, teaching, demonstrating, & setting an example for Ss is wasted time. Spend time with Ss devising & developing common language around digital citizenship. Actions speak louder than words so be mindful of our own social media msgs #satchat
A1 our kids need an enhanced set of skills to navigate the digital world...so much can be misleading online that it’s vital for students to think critically about what they read and share #satchat
A1 the future is now. We're no longer preparing them for a digital world because we are living in a digital world ... it is us that needs to catch up to them. Unfortunately, we as adults are behind the curve any many times we choose to block out the bad instead of facing #satchat
A1) In the middle grades, students don't always have the reasoning skills to understand the lasting impact of their behavior on social media. Digital Citizenship curriculum is a vital first step in teaching them that #satchat
A1 Preparing Ss to navigate the world they live in is a teacher's mission! Ss live in and will continue to live in a digital world. Our charge is to teach them how to do this the right and safe way. #satchat@MrsJSweeney
A1. Respect, admiration and listening are as important in the digital world as they are in the real world. Schools need to teach students to be good digital citizens because these qualities are best delivered at the stages of learning, which schools are responsible for. #satchat
A1 We need to learn from our mistakes. Previous generations were not taught how to be digitally appropriate, so now we have a lot of jack wagons online causing trouble. We want our students to ultimately be better than us. #satchat
A1: Digital citizenship is more important now than ever! I do believe that years from now there will be a definitive study that directly links the rise of digital access to the rise in the social emotional issues in our society. We must support healthy digital habits. #satchat
A1: Younger kids embrace tech without thinking about it. Often before K. It’s imperative that we provide them with proper techniques to become tech savvy citizens. They may not get it anywhere else. #satchat
A1. This has become the platform from which they'll begin to be evaluated by teachers, higher levels of education, employers, etc. This digital portfolio will begin to determine future opportunity and we see our charge as helping S's create an appropriate image. #satchat
It is also about being on the right sites at the right time. In Elementary SM is not as big, it is more responsible searching, trust in freedom, etc. #satchat
A1 We should’ve been teaching citizenship all along. The only difference is where it happens. Kids need to know that there’s responsibility online just as much as face to face...if not more #Satchat
A1: Digitlal literacy is necessary to become digital citizens. We need to teach Ss to become responsible for how they they use tech to interact w/ the world around them. #satchat
A1: As we are all aware and see, the digital environment is not temporary. It is permanent and the footprints we leave never fade. Teaching our students how to be digital citizens is essential for the present and their futures.
#satchat
A1: Heard our Ss referred to as “phigitals” the other day - Digital natives who don’t differentiate between their physical and digital worlds - even more reason to teach them the citizenship that comes with navigating both! #satchat
Both are needed, don't get me wrong, but if you are not practicing DigCit by letting them go at times, you are not doing much. #satchat Then expect lots of mistakes and conversations.
Yes! My elementary school problem-solving team has a Twitter account, @PhragPhighters, and they are learning to post with purpose, communicating information about their project. They loved learning about Tweetdeck for scheduling postings throughout the day. #satchat
True Tim! But in how many schools is digital media, like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, or Twitch banned? Why not make class accounts to share the amazing things our students are doing and give them control of what is being pushed out, with teacher moderation #satchat
We need to stop pretending that what the kids are doing is so different ... it is just a different access point and they do not have to look so hard to find it. #satchat
A1-I remember Stranger Danger? Do you know their parents? Have you been in their car? Have you been in their house. If not, they are a stranger. How do we adapt that message? #satchat
Also, when you venture out online outside of our education bubble and see the kinds of things being posted by kids & adults, you no longer question why we need to have real conversations about online interactions #satchat
A1- We teach Ss expectations for the school environment as well as the digital environment - so they can be successful in life and make smart decisions. #satchat
A1: I think of it as part of my instruction now, I need to not only model and live it as a teacher, but take them through guided and independent practice. #satchat
A1 the future is now. We're no longer preparing them for a digital world because we are living in a digital world ... it is us that needs to catch up to them. Unfortunately, we as adults are behind the curve any many times we choose to block out the bad instead of facing #satchat
A1: School responsibility for teaching digital citizenship also includes informing parents and the community about the skills needed to be safe and productive online in school and in life. #satchat
A1. For our students many of their primary interactions are digital! It’s an area parents and teachers struggle with because students sometimes see it as “not real “and therefore needs guidance in making good choices #satchat
A1 Being a good digital citizen important. Ss will hav3 a Online life and their lived experience (physically). Important to know where boundaries are in both & create a positive digital footprint for future living (incl Career)
#satchat
Retweeted David Geurin (@DavidGeurin):
Words to communicate high expectations...
1. I believe in you.
2. This is important.
3. I have high expectations for you.
4. You can do it.
5. I won't give up on you.
#edchat#satchat#leadupchat
A1 in a global communication network as @pfinette labels it, young people must learn how to search, share, listen, reflect, give voice 2 their own POV, build positive relationships, distinguish fact from opinion, be safe, express care for community - not be bystanders - #satchat
A2: The tenets of being a good digital citizen are the same, really, as being a good citizen. Being kind, caring, respectful, empathetic and making sure that what you’re doing contributes positively to our world. #Satchat
A2 as a 2nd Gr T I keep it simple, do/act/say what you would in person. Text/type/post w/ empathy. Stay safe w/ no last names or personal info shared. It’s two way, don’t hurt others & protect yourself. Contribute positivity & solutions. there’s enough lemons be an apple #SatChat
A1: Vital because it's the world they are living into and they need to be able to navigate a global society. PS: It's safe to say digital is not going away 😎 #satchat
A1 To Teach them to be great citizens they also need to learn skills for great digital citizenship. School is where so many skills are learned and good behaviors are reinforced. #SatChat
#satchat A1 the force that is our digital world can unlock untold academic and personal weath for our students. To borrow a line “the force is our ally, and a powerful ally it is.”- #yoda S’s need our support to use the force wisely
A2: Being a good digital citizen is about respect, empathy, collaboration, communication, problem solving and critical thinking. Many of the same tenets that make people good citizens in offline world. #satchat
A2: Shouldn’t we always be good citizens - digitally & in-person? Respect, kindness, inclusive language, thoughtful choice of words, listening to others' perspectives, etc. etc. We're all human beings, both on and off line. Citizenship knows no bounds. #satchat
A2 A good place to start is, "If you wouldn't do it in the classroom, don't do it online." Students need to be safe online, and they need to respect others. #satchat
A1: I also think it's important to show them how social media can be used for positive things and learning, connecting, sharing, etc. They hear so much about the negatives. #satchat
The problem with a digital citizenship curriculum is that we adopt it to feel good about ourselves, to check off the boxes, to say we did TEACH this, but frankly we aren't bothering to find out if the students have LEARNED anything. #satchat
A1 because the ubiquity if connection and the possibilities of solitude while connected can lead to a false sense of grandeur and intentional seeking of the dark web. We must prepare Ss of these possiblitied and give them tools to combat their negative natures #satchat
A1. It is also important to model digital citizenship for adults. Sadly, many adults still see the use of technology is just an add on. This is no longer the case. Technology will not make you a good teacher, but it can be used as a tool to make you a better teacher. #satchat
A2 Don’t post anything you wouldn’t say in front of a roomful of people you admire and/or love. Represent the best in yourself. Remember that what you post online lives forever.
#satchat
RT SimpleK12: RT ClassTechTips: Good morning #satchat! Following along this morning and excited to see so many of you at #TCT18 on Friday :) https://t.co/lEBVJGM2TB
A1 Digital learning & citizenship exist as layers among *all* learning & citizenship. Schools have responsibilities to provide comprehensive educations, preparing our students to communicate effectively in order to influence their worlds positively. #satchat
A2. Being polite, being respectful and being able to provide constructive criticism on a wide variety of topics are the tenets of being a good digital citizen. #satchat
We should also remember the first photos posted online of kids are not done by them, but rather by their parents ... could add the first embarrassing photos of them is done not by a bully, but by a parent. #satchat
We can't just teach it, we need to model and experience it. It's one thing for us to teach, it's another for our students to learn, preferably through hands on experience. #satchat. Sorry, should have finished my own meme!
A2: Modeling and teaching citizenship, either digital or personal, promotes positive values has enormous potential to change the world we live in. #satchat
A2: "Pause Before You Post". We had an amazing speaker come in the fall and that was his main message. Thinking about what you are posting and how it might be received is critical. Once out there, it's out there! #satchat
A1: Living in a digital world provides the alluring temptation for our young people to avoid empathy and to use the defense of being behind the screen to choose nasty rather than choosing kindness...and many adults, even many in positions of leadership model nasty! #satchat
A1: It is important for Ss to recognize that with the digital tools that we have, we have both the right & the responsibility to be good citizens-the right to protect our personal wellbeing & those of our fellow citizens & to use our platforms for the common good #satchat
A2: The tenets of being a good digital citizen are the same, really, as being a good citizen. Being kind, caring, respectful, empathetic and making sure that what you’re doing contributes positively to our world. #Satchat

#satchat#SaturdayMotivation#SaturdayMorninghttps://t.co/4rWfTbPZMO
I agree that the school has a responsibility, but that responsibility should not be more than the parent's responsibility ... the parents need to be responsible for their own kids #satchat
A2: Good digital citizens think first before anything. They should verify before sharing news. I learned a great Fake or Fact game at @AMLE in November. #satchat
A2: I would ponder how being a digital citizen deviates from qualities good citizens have face to face. Might be a question to wrestle amongst Ss and Ts #SatChat
Something that you post digitally is never fully removed and can be seen by all future people that you may eventually become connected too (employers). Words spoken become less credible as years go along. #satchat
A1: Students will believe whatever they click on the web, the teaching of critical thinking skills isn't just a literary component. It's necessary for life. #satchat
I will annihilate & utterly destroy anyone in a “Debate” regarding that which @realDonaldTrump has done for Urban America “To Date” versuses that which @BarackObama did in 8 years!!! Anybody including @BarackObama himself! We will “Utterly Destroy Them all!” #IamUrbanAmerica
A2: Responsibility, accountability, truth, ethical to name a few. But again, we must teach children to act online as they do in f2f interactions. #21stCharacterEd#satchat
A2: I like ISTE’s list of tenets: Respect (access, etiquette, laws), Educate (communication, literacy, commerce, and Protect (rights/responsibilities, safety/security, health/wellness) #satchat
This. When I work with groups of adults and we talk digital citizenship and they only want to focus on "kids these days" I ask, have you READ the comments of online news posts? Have you ever SEEN a Facebook thread? We can do better. #satchat
Also, when you venture out online outside of our education bubble and see the kinds of things being posted by kids & adults, you no longer question why we need to have real conversations about online interactions #satchat
A2 A good visual reminder of good digital citizenship and what to think about before posting. I love that the I stands for illegal instead of inspiring this time. Solid advice! #satchat@MrsJSweeney
A2 Since it’s very relevant this weekend...Only put online what you would say to your mom. That should put caution into every interaction you have with others digitally. #satchat
A2: Using our knowledge, skills and passions to help others, be a voice, etc. It is an amazing platform that we should use! It doesn't matter how old or young you are. #satchat
Great leaders are never satisfied with current levels of performance. They constantly strive for higher and higher levels of achievement.
They move beyond the status quo and ask the same for those around them. #satchat#EduGladiators#leadlap#leadupchat
#satchat Formative assessment is the game changer...in all learning experiences no matter the content or age of learner. When you don’t make time for it, you are choosing to simply “deliver info” and not truly “teach.”
The problem with a digital citizenship curriculum is that we adopt it to feel good about ourselves, to check off the boxes, to say we did TEACH this, but frankly we aren't bothering to find out if the students have LEARNED anything. #satchat
A2: these https://t.co/nqj1Kw4AZy and I love the subcategories here as well! What if the sub categories represented the meet for elem, middle and high school. Very intentional for a district! #satchat

A2 research skills are also vital...helping kids navigate and sift through so much information is vital...for it to really sink in it has to be driven by the research that they need to match the purpose that they decide #satchat
Galatians 2:20
'My old self has been crucified with Christ.
It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.
So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God,
who loved me and gave himself for me.'
#Jesus#SaturdayMorning#satchat
A1: Similar to most topics, Ss come to school with prior knowledge about tech, what it is, looks like, & how to use it. As Ts we must help cultivate understanding in them on proper/appropriate usage both in school and the world, same as we'd teach anything else #satchat
A1 it's important because it is their lively hood. Like we used to teach "Stranger Danger" concepts to young ones many of those rules still apply. #Satchat
A2: So many traits are the same as being a good person, but I think an important tenant is that Ss use tech to develop good habits for learning and expanding their education, not just social media stuff. #satchat
A2) Being a good digital citizen is much like being a good citizen. Our words and actions have the power to build and help or the power to destroy and hurt. Choose wisely #satchat
100% and it's vital for us to teach this as educators. Think of all the posts, likes, comments, shares etc. we see on our own social media accounts from adults that are inappropriate...we need to teach and model this for kids. #Satchat
In celebration of Global Accessibility Awareness Day (#GAAD), 5/15 #MSFTEduChat TweetMeet will focus on Inclusive Classrooms & Accessibility. Join our hosts in recording a video why this topic and this tweetmeet are important to your community. https://t.co/UoFUwB4zMW#satchat
A1- We teach Ss expectations for the school environment as well as the digital environment - so they can be successful in life and make smart decisions. #satchat
Yes! Teaching and learning is ALL about modeling whether it’s in the digital realm or in person! We can’t promote good digital habits by staying on the sideline! #satchat
A2: Modeling and teaching citizenship, either digital or personal, promotes positive values has enormous potential to change the world we live in. #satchat
Q2 #satchat
Tenets of being a good citizen:
1. Don't post when angry, mad or frustrated - nothing good will come from it
2. Everything you post is public - understand and respect it
3. Post for the positive, for learning, for connecting, for collaborating
4. Learn as you post
A2: I like the World Economic Forum's DQ - 3 Levels of Digital Intelligence components: Citizenship - Creativity - Entrepreneurship with 8 Life Skills. Read more here https://t.co/h3misp2P5P. #satchat
A2. I think recognizing the power that the digital world has and getting students to understand this as well is crucial. Teaching them to be proactive rather than reactive all in pillars can make the difference. #satchat
A2 no different than being respectful citizen- only difference is remember: 1. there is no such thing as "deleting" something u post 2. don't post anything u wouldn't want ur mom or grandmother 2 read. & for adults - same rules- we should model appropriate SM behavior. #satchat
A2: the tenets of digital citizenship aren’t much different than “generic” citizenship - be thoughtful, understand that there are repercussions to our actions, be kind, show respect... #satchat
A2 Be a good person. Be critical. Be an advocate. Have the right intentions but at the end of the day you should be this both offline and on. Quit making citizenship something that only happens online when kids struggle face to face. #Satchat
A2. Foresight of where and to whom one wishes information to be shared, mindfulness of the impact on others, validity/reliability of info, understanding of accountability in sharing info. #satchat
A1: so many great answers already. We must teach Digital Citizenship to prepare our students for the world in which they live. Just like in other areas, we can’t neglect to show the way & then get mad or disappointed when they don’t know. Purposeful instruction #satchat
The difference between the energy and time that it takes to put up with old problems and the energy and time it takes to come up with new solutions is surprisingly small. The difference is attitude. #satchat#leadlap#edugladiators
If instead of a separate curriculum schools embedded it into their daily teaching practices, you would have daily, first hand knowledge on whether or not Ss were learning. #Satchat
The problem with a digital citizenship curriculum is that we adopt it to feel good about ourselves, to check off the boxes, to say we did TEACH this, but frankly we aren't bothering to find out if the students have LEARNED anything. #satchat
I think the answer to that is more complicated than just saying that class accounts are ok. Schools still need to balance the productive/guided use of social media while being respectful of community and parent perspectives of children on social media. #SatChat
I'm a huge fan of @dajbelshaw's work on digital literacies, 8 essential elements - I think we need to understand this as adults and have conversations WITH students about their needs in digital spaces. https://t.co/UCaezhl75P#satchat
A1: My 5th graders have seen inaccurate science on the web & bring that "knowledge" to class. We have had wonderful discussions around what's fact & what's one person's opinion looking for clicks on the web. #satchat
Kids make bad decisions ... we need to be proactive and honest with them, get them thinking about their actions ... I am blunt ... tell the girls not to send nudies and then tell the boys to stop asking for them. and vice versa. #satchat
A3: My Ss are at the age where they are incredibly impulsive and more worried about what their "friends" think and are doing. Fitting in is life for them. If others are being poor dig. citz. then they want to follow the crowd. #satchat
A2 We need to stress the tenets both online and offline. Our students oftentimes may not realize the difference and bring the online world into the real world! #satchat
A3: The students are masters at the technology and those who need to help them learn how to navigate the proper use are beginners. They run circles around us and until we can reverse that and better model, it will continue. #Satchat
A3 S’s sometimes struggle w/seeing something from another POV they are so egocentric. Their honesty can also cone across wrong when it’s digital and lacking context. #SatChat we practice w/ fact FaceBook wall in our classroom
a2) Respect yourself and respect others; lift up; be aware and beware; remember your digital footprint is not in sand where it disappears--it is in cement, recorded for others to witness, find. Make sure it's a walk of fame, not shame. #satchat
A2. The tenets of being a good digital citizen grows. All of our 7th grade students are required to take a self paced online Dig Cit course led by @senoramongold. Students have taught us the importance of digital commerce and gaming too. This is our course outline. #satchat
A2: I agree 100% w/ @Joe_toomey1984 & want to add being A QUESTIONER! We as Ts & adults question our sources & proper tech use between websites & apps, Ss should too #satchat
A2 Be a good person. Be critical. Be an advocate. Have the right intentions but at the end of the day you should be this both offline and on. Quit making citizenship something that only happens online when kids struggle face to face. #Satchat
A3: Challenges include 24/7 access- being a digital citizen after school hours, cyberbullying and some of our world leaders are not modelling digital citizenship for Ss! #satchat
A2. Understanding the value as well add the limitations of the digital world. Knowing what is appropriate in the often faceless world of the internet. #satchat
We don't need to share the actual children, but instead their work and what they produced/accomplished. It lowers risk in the classroom when others are reaffirming your work and the work of your kids. #satchat
A1: I also think it's important to show them how social media can be used for positive things and learning, connecting, sharing, etc. They hear so much about the negatives. #satchat
I like this graphic as it outlines an appropriate learning progression. There are certain skills and competencies that need to be taught at each level. Thanks for sharing! #satchat
A2. I think recognizing the power that the digital world has and getting students to understand this as well is crucial. Teaching them to be proactive rather than reactive all in pillars can make the difference. #satchat
A3: A challenge is getting Ss to slow down & think before engaging online. The speed with which we CAN respond, react, or reply online doesn't mean we SHOULD. Words carry both power & potential. It's critically important to remember that both on and offline. #satchat
A3. We feel that the biggest challenge would be using the right digital medium to teach them the same. The internet is full of ideas and concepts that may or may not be right. Avoiding distractive parts of it so as to teach digital ethics is a difficult task. #satchat
#satchat A2: ❤️the work of Casa-Todd & her Social Leadia book. She joined a chat & tweeted with local high school seniors this year. “Tap into the positive power of social media to be a leader.”
A3: Time. Resources. Creating impactful understanding in Ss that will help them be the best version of themselves digitally, when no-one is beside them, monitoring. #satchat
A2 I challenge my @ChargersCCS elementary students to this Philippians 4:8 litmus test... if what they want to do online fails any part of it, question it. #satchat
This is why I keep Google Keep open during #satchat! I load in links to all the marvelous resources and book recommendations people share. Thank you, everyone!
I'm a huge fan of @dajbelshaw's work on digital literacies, 8 essential elements - I think we need to understand this as adults and have conversations WITH students about their needs in digital spaces. https://t.co/UCaezhl75P#satchat
Kids make bad decisions ... we need to be proactive and honest with them, get them thinking about their actions ... I am blunt ... tell the girls not to send nudies and then tell the boys to stop asking for them. and vice versa. #satchat
A3: Challenge of teaching digital citizenship similar to teaching prosocial behavior in schools. It means different things to different people and evolves over time. Also there isn't a large set of standards that define it like core subjects taught in school #satchat
A3 Teachers immediately see it as "one more thing" and separate from what they are teaching. We need to consider how digital citizenship fits into and supports our curriculum. #satchat
A2: If it’s not something your parents or grandparents would be proud of then don’t post it! If it isn’t kind don’t post it. If you wouldn’t want it posted about you then don’t post it.
If...well you get it...When in doubt don’t share it out! #satchat
parents and schools have NO CLUE ... kids have multiple accounts with multiple names ... different versions ... the "church" version ... the "gamer" ... the "THOT" ... the "showboater" ... just listen to what they are saying #satchat
A3 S’s sometimes struggle w/seeing something from another POV they are so egocentric. Their honesty can also cone across wrong when it’s digital and lacking context. #SatChat we practice w/ fact FaceBook wall in our classroom
We need to be paying teachers a comfortable, living wage. No teacher should ever have to work two jobs to survive or worry about their students having the supplies they need to succeed. Teachers shape the character, caliber, and future of our children. Vote Blue #satchat
And it's not that the curricula crafted by Google Edu & Common Sense Media etc. don't have worthy resources, because they do! We just need to have more frank conversations w/Ss, bring their voices and concerns to the forefront and ask them to problem solve around that. #satchat
A3: Some do not believe it is important. See it as "playing" or following celebrities, etc. If adults do not build a footprint it's hard to model and teach it to students. #satchat
A3 Some Ss don’t recognize the dangerous of unsafe online practices. Also the anonymity makes people bolder and at times more vocal about their opinions. #satchat
A2 1) Read before you send. Will this post comprise my integrity. I think covers it all. Post out of anger, frustrating, bitterness, or some times even bliss don't portray who you really are or the point you are trying to get across. #satchat
A2: Basic tennet, if you're not proud of it, or you wouldn't want it being said/done to you, don't post/do it. So I guess a stop and think before pushing send. #satchat
So important => I think we miss opportunities to leverage the teachable moments that are out there. Instead of ignoring it, it is our responsibility to teach Ss how to identify perspective and recognize click-bait! #satchat
A3: Students navigate these spaces all the time and are often way out in front when it comes to digital use before talking about the ramifications of posts or comments. #Satchat
A3 With kids peer influence can always be a challenge. Another challenge is that there is always a hot new technology or app that we have to learn about so we can teach them how to navigate it safely. #satchat@MrsJSweeney
A3 The biggest challenge is helping students understand that their words have real meaning especially when written & even online. Like toothpaste can’t go back n the tube, a post can’t really be taken back. That must sink in. #satchat
A3 Interaction with those you don’t know and what truly knowing a person means. Safety is important to teach and even though you are comfortable online with a person, they may not be who you think they are in real life. #satchat
A3. People who do not display empathy and kindness in other parts of their lives, most likely will not digitally, either. We must work to build empathy and compassion in all students. #satchat
A3 Convincing teachers of the importance that it should be embedded in all curriculum. Each of us should be speaking into it mindfully as educators. Challenging the concepts of our current cultural norms and creating critical thinkers on the subject #satchat
A3) One of the biggest struggles is that we can't view DC as something that we teach at the beginning of the year and move on. We have to teach online safety and DC relentlessly. It's not a checklist item #satchat
A3: All teachers need to teach and model Dig Cit. Although all of our 7th graders must take our online class, countless teachers model every day after learning about Dig Cit and ISTE standards during breakout sessions taught by our Digital Conversion Team #Satchat
[Modeling attempt at polite questioning] Say more about this, Billy... Wouldn't there be benefits if online & actual world doings interact constructively versus each staying in their own bubbles? #satchat
A2: Can you say out loud what you post online? Can you defend what you’re sharing & retweeting? Can you show what value your network of followers add to your life? Help Ss understand their entire online world paints a picture of themselves. #Satchat
Correct, I am surprised it is so easy to create an account by simply clicking, "I am over 13" Yet the fact remains kids as young as 8 have social media accounts. Who is teaching them? #satchat
A3) Challenges: age and maturity-many Ss are still developmentally not ready for the digital responsibility they carry in their pocket--believe they are immune or don't understand the weight of words. #satchat
Q3: A challenge is that I feel like sometimes the students are a step ahead of me. Technology is moving at lightening speed, and once I tweak my lessons to keep up with it, there is something new to contend with. #Satchat
A3: These digital citizens are gifted at tech, can go around most of our monitoring methods and they haven’t matured enough yet to realize that we are trying to protect them and prepare them for their future. #satchat
One place we can, and must, do better, is involving parents and families in these conversations. I know it's hard to reach parents en masse, but we have to keep sharing resources, ideas, and welcoming their voices in these conversations too. #satchat
Anyone have strategies for how to help Ss be cognizant of SLOWing down before they post? Something Scandalous, hurtful, or ugly - ppl want to be the first to post! #satchat
A3: In the digital world, Ss have so many different avenues facing them. Parents have expectations, friends expect another, Ts expect something else. It’s a challenge for Ts to balance all that for the good of the student. #satchat
A3: The students are masters at the technology and those who need to help them learn how to navigate the proper use are beginners. They run circles around us and until we can reverse that and better model, it will continue. #Satchat
If you are a music lover then I suggest this song for you. you will find in Spotify. so don't wait to listen to this song and add your playlist. And don't forget to follow
https://t.co/9VhuSyjGxl#satchat
A3: Some challenges include a lack of experience in a supported environment (blocked sites), parental support and modeling, students making mistakes without realizing consequences #satchat
A3: Good digital citizenship is much like citizenship I our society - it involves encouraging people to balance their rights & abilities & making choices that don’t always come with immediate negative repercussions #satchat
A2 same as a good citizen except in digital world - care and concern for community members, respect, truthfulness, open to new ideas, civil discourse even in conflict, service to community, sharing, willing to stand up for others and not be complicit or a bystander #satchat
kids are still doing the same basic knucklehead things ... the problem is more people can see it and more people with bad intentions have access to them. The risk is higher #satchat
A2: in addition to understanding the permanence of digital world 🌎 students need to see how the tools are also a way for them to purposefully create their online presence. Instead of only focusing on what not to do, we need to show the positive power of what you can do #satchat
A3 Biggest challenge with teaching digital citizenship is not understanding how kids communicate in real life & where. We draw a line in the sand where kids have already erased that line. I’ve learned more from music fan wars than we ever discuss in schools. #Satchat
A3: Teaching Digital citizenship can sometimes be a challenge because of the ever evolving nature of technology. Got to stay in the know that’s for sure. #Satchat
A3: teaching how to be good digital citizens is ongoing often takes place after school hours and is the Wild Wild West. Our students are growing up with this it’s new to us and the main thing is that we need to create not just good digital citizens but just good citizens #satchat
A3. One challenge is teaching them to filter out all the “noise”. There is so much garbage that can be a distraction, or Encourage them to do things they wouldn’t be proud of, or Fill them with misinformation. #satchat
I never thought about that, it's like making our thinking visible if we do that for the Ss to show them our thought process. Thanks for the idea! #satchat
Digital citizenship begins with modeling good use. That means you have to use it! You can’t talk about it without showing it. Lots of opinions about social media from adults who aren’t on it. #digcit#satchat
A3) Since MySpace hit, we knew we were facing new ground in keeping up with latest, greatest and misuse of tech. MUST include students in teaching us. They are not shy to show their knowledge - and we might learn something. #satchat
#satchat Exactly! This is not a “one and done” lesson. It should be woven into all work by all teachers, Admin, and parents. (Yes. I said parents. I have a 17-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old son. We discuss this daily & I model.)
And it's not that the curricula crafted by Google Edu & Common Sense Media etc. don't have worthy resources, because they do! We just need to have more frank conversations w/Ss, bring their voices and concerns to the forefront and ask them to problem solve around that. #satchat
We never had control over the snideness, the innuendos, the cruelty found in notes passed from desk to desk years ago.
Sadly, the power and scope of those passed words have grown beyond our imagination.
Digital citizenship won't change this.
Tough to be a kid today.
#satchat
A3: I teach 6th grade & they have 1:1 netbooks...I feel it's challenging to talk about proper use when they take the device home & are less regulated. I know it's out of my control, but it has a HUGE impact on what they perceive is appropriate & how to use tech overall #satchat
no one ... or parents who are telling them it is no big deal because having the kids able to send them gifts on their facebook game is more important. #satchat
A3. The biggest challenge is getting students to be digital citizens not just at school. They have to apply the skills we're teaching at home and in the real world. #satchat
This is so true. When you used to go home from school, you didn't have to worry about what others thought. Now, it's constant, kids don't get away from it...it's a real challenge and so important to model this for them. #Satchat
A3: Challenges include 24/7 access- being a digital citizen after school hours, cyberbullying and some of our world leaders are not modelling digital citizenship for Ss! #satchat
Both are needed, don't get me wrong, but if you are not practicing DigCit by letting them go at times, you are not doing much. #satchat Then expect lots of mistakes and conversations.
A3 Ss may not see good citizenship modeled often enough because many use devices unsupervised, without supervision, outside of the school day. As with anything, Ss learn best with more opportunities to practice in real-world applications w/ guidance from adults. #satchat
A3: The challenges lie in TIME and priorities. Teachers struggle to have time to teach academics and while DC is part of academics, the time struggle is REAL! Conversation is needed to envision the Future Ready Student and include these competencies.
#satchat
A3 The definition of relationship has changed. Kids no longer need to be face-to-face to have what they consider a relationship. They don't understand that it's easy to mask an identity online. #satchat
A3) One of the biggest struggles is that we can't view DC as something that we teach at the beginning of the year and move on. We have to teach online safety and DC relentlessly. It's not a checklist item #satchat
A3: Effectively including parents and families as well. Just as we want parents to model appropriate behaviors for their children, the same is true online. Model for your kids what you do and don’t want them doing online. #Satchat
A3 Agree! All of these plus living what you are wanting the Ss to be, yourself. Your digital presence is there for the world to see. Model what you want from the Ss. #satchat
A2: in addition to understanding the permanence of digital world 🌎 students need to see how the tools are also a way for them to purposefully create their online presence. Instead of only focusing on what not to do, we need to show the positive power of what you can do #satchat
A4: It's hard sometimes to do this on a full class scale. Sometimes it is better to talk to Ss in small groups so they are not as socially influenced in their responses to example situations. Use games and scenarios, current DC topics in news to support your point. #SatChat
If you have Schoology, email me ndale@Spencerportschools.org and I will share@our guest course. @senoramongold has taught it with no weekly or daily face to face contact all year. #Satchat
In reply to
@Ausel_JLS, @senoramongold, @senoramongold
A3: Bad examples from celebrities...you think this would deter kids to be good digital citizenship, but they idolize some of these people and when they see the problem they think it's okay to make the same mistake. #satchat
A1: Heard our Ss referred to as “phigitals” the other day - Digital natives who don’t differentiate between their physical and digital worlds - even more reason to teach them the citizenship that comes with navigating both! #satchat
A3: Each year my 5th graders learn difficult lessons about the words they text/put online have consequences. We talk about this in morning meetings. Online respect is challenging for us all including our leaders in Washington. #satchat
but parents are just as bad as the kids ... not believing something bad can happen to their kid or they friend request you and you see their page filled with booty pics. #satchat
I think this is all the more reason for schools to do more to promote prosocial behavior. Can't help but think these multiple personas in different "situations" is not all that different from how some act that way in different social situations with different groups #satchat
A3: Challenges: understanding multimodal and dynamic communication modes, no teaching of 3Dimensional reading/viewing skills, or how to promote healthy skepticism #satchat
A3) One of the biggest struggles is that we can't view DC as something that we teach at the beginning of the year and move on. We have to teach online safety and DC relentlessly. It's not a checklist item #satchat
In another life. Trump would have been fired from his paper route as a child for throwing them down the sewer. Cheating and collecting, till the readers revolted, and he would have heard, "You're fired." #SatChat
A3: Hard to control what occurs outside my classroom. I try to make students aware that I’m available to them through Google classroom, etc... when they’re out of school if they have questions. Some have taken advantage of that. #satchat
A3. Our own understanding of the current, popular apps. Maintaining the proper distance from the students as we learn to utilize the current social media apps. #satchat
A3 Another challenge is that digital citizenship curriculum focuses on right/wrong in online interactions but ignores the citizenship of social advocacy. Teach kids how to use social media for change & they will own that. There are plenty of examples of this. #satchat
A4: Have classroom/school social media accounts and have conversations with Ss about what’s safe/not safe and why. Provide them with opportunities to interact in a safe & responsible way. Model appropriate posting, asking permission to post of others, etc. #Satchat
A4 the other day I was in a midday chat on global issues & I was able to show them as I tweeted how to be respectful & considerate. They watched & asked questions. #satchat
One place we can, and must, do better, is involving parents and families in these conversations. I know it's hard to reach parents en masse, but we have to keep sharing resources, ideas, and welcoming their voices in these conversations too. #satchat
You are reminding me of Piaget’s stages. Most kids don’t fully see beyond the egocentric POV until the age 7. The “struggle is real” for K-2 teachers. #satchat
#DigitalCitizenship not about mastery of a device but mastery of self. The appropriate and skillful application of hard skills/digital skills is soft skills dependent ... "Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all."
https://t.co/jkvwyLZjlp#satchat
A3: Truly Digitial Citizecnship needs to be embedded in the basic structures of the school. Needs to be something that just is and not something that is an event. #Satchat
A4: Best ways to model digital citizenship is to teach Ss the power of networks. Establishing a positive persona can help them build a global network and make friends around the world @LevelUpVillage@satchat#satchat
A4: I feel we need to teach, remind, support, explain and model digital citizenship throughout the school year and not just at the start of the school year! #satchat#digitalcitizenship#goldenrule
A3 The difficulty is that teachers need to lead by example. If you say you need to give credit for your sources and then share their work online when they don't we have a problem #SatChat
A4: Use the power of F2F modeling first, then reach out w digital connections. Use mistakes as teachable moments. Build empathy whenever and wherever you can. #satchat
A3. That a totally different set of standards, behaviors, and beliefs contrary to appropriate digital citizenship is being encouraged & working against our efforts #Satchat
Some of our schools have purchased this for use - or had kids make their own versions which is even better - also some schools do digital citizenship moments on their morning news feed vids #satchat

A4 Teachers need an online presence. Write a blog, participate in Twitter chats, tweet classroom activities. Let the students see what and talk about choices you made. #satchat
A3 Challenge to teaching digital citizenship? Two words: Moral. Panic. Audiences flip out about digital risks, some of which are legitimate, & insist on head-in-sand approach, which adds to vulnerability. #satchat
I think I used to assume they would have more skills and strategies than they do. The more I use it in the classroom, the more I have seen the importance of it. I look at it completely differently today than I did even a year ago. #satchat
A3 tired of hearing that kids know more about tech than us- that's not the point-any educator or parent can sit with a child & educate them on self-respect, character, self-image & right from wrong & accountability. This transcends from real life 2the virtual. #satchat
A3: Digital Citzenship has to be incorporated into all classes for students to understand its importance. It is relevant, applicable, and necessary in all aspects of their online life. Teaching this as a stand alone course implies it is work for a single class only. #Satchat
Modeling: Schools and educators that make a genuine effort to use digital interactions for good... for celebrations & acknowledgements, for engaging stakeholder voices, for communication & collaboration... these are wins! #gocrickets#satchat
Right on! Our students taught our faculty the different social media platforms this year based on what faculty wanted to learn more about! It was eye opening for our staff. #Satchat
A4: Embracing Mission-Minded Learning is a great way to teach DigCit. Mission cards, badges, and other tools remind kids that DigCit is part of all #edtech use. @ShellTerrell provides a wonderful toolkit for this: https://t.co/5r6pNvZnRS#satchat
Oops..got busy doing some research and almost missed #satchat. This topic is so important for today. But than digital citizenship, why not just citizenship? Sandi from NJ. Director of IT.
A4: One way to model good digital citizenship for our students is to show how to use digital tools for professional and productive purposes in the classroom and school community. #satchat
But it's also important to model how to deal with negative comments, with inappropriate and unwanted interactions. How to report users and deal with misuse, we have to also model that and make sure students understand it can happen to everyone and it's not acceptable. #satchat
A3: I believe we need to ensure our teachers understand and use the skills for being a digital citizen as well. WE can't take for granted that our workforce have these competencies before we ask them to teach students. #satchat PDproblem
A1 I think this is obvious. If we make the assumption that all kids are digital experts, then we have failed them as role models and educators. If we don't teach/model appropriate behavior, digital or physical, they will invent their own. #satchat
Right on! Our students taught our faculty the different social media platforms this year based on what faculty wanted to learn more about! It was eye opening for our staff. #Satchat
#satchat Have you heard about this? Because if you haven't, you need to, and you need to make sure everyone does. American Law Enforcement is OUT. OF. CONTROL. https://t.co/BrdccNWXTi
#satchat Anyone ever watch the Jimmy Kimmel “mean tweets” segments? My kids showed me. They thought it was funny, but it led to some discussion about how the people behind those tweets were choosing to tear down others & how normal that is becoming.
A4) Like anything, start with building a foundation in a controlled environment, and expand from there. From class blog, to chatting with another class or two, to opening it up. It's also imperative that Ts maintain a positive presence online, because Ss WILL find them #satchat
I agree. We can't anticipate what children will face in the future, but we can guide them and help cultivate their ability to make good choices. #satchat
A3 tired of hearing that kids know more about tech than us- that's not the point-any educator or parent can sit with a child & educate them on self-respect, character, self-image & right from wrong & accountability. This transcends from real life 2the virtual. #satchat
I did this with parents twice this year. Since then, there are even newer platforms. Platforms come & go. Social interactions remain fluid & we have to work on this along with how we interact with those in front of us #satchat
Right on! Our students taught our faculty the different social media platforms this year based on what faculty wanted to learn more about! It was eye opening for our staff. #Satchat
A4 Teachers need an online presence. Write a blog, participate in Twitter chats, tweet classroom activities. Let the students see what and talk about choices you made. #satchat
A4. That's a tough one. We're not sure if there can be methods to convert real world activities to digital ones and guage responses of students to a digital stimulus. We're not quite aware of any models in this regard, so we'd love to read other responses! #satchat
A4 Role-play scenarios.; then, debrief. Use smaller analog & digital sandboxes (e.g., classroom backchannels in various formats) on the way to accessing the entire Worldwide Web. #satchat
A4: Be the model of appropriate use, show kids the incredible reach they have, and teach them to be positive, and aware, model and be the example! 😊#satchat
A3: I think it is just as important to model when to put the tech down and interact w/ people F2F, as it is to use tech appropriately & effectively. #satchat
A4) Like anything, start with building a foundation in a controlled environment, and expand from there. From class blog, to chatting with another class or two, to opening it up. It's also imperative that Ts maintain a positive presence online, because Ss WILL find them #satchat
And how to tell an adult in your building what is going on. Ss can’t help what is sent to th but they have choices what they do. What steps do you tell Ss to do? Don’t react. Block. Report. #satchat
A4: Modeling positive digital citizenship for our students starts first by paying attention what we are modeling in all other aspects of our work as educators, including our own expectations & behaviors. What we model is what we get. #satchat
A4: I often show my students things I post on my Twitter profile...they love seeing how nerdy I am...I love showing them what Social Media can be!
#Satchat
Yes! As the person who tries to set up security and protocols to protect students, it is important that teachers also realize that they need to model the behavior. #satchat
digital citizenship seems to focus on the 10% who use it wrong rather than understanding 90% use it right. I’d rather be teaching reputation management and how to leverage social media to amplify voice and create opportunities. Manage the exceptions. #satchat
#satchat Anyone ever watch the Jimmy Kimmel “mean tweets” segments? My kids showed me. They thought it was funny, but it led to some discussion about how the people behind those tweets were choosing to tear down others & how normal that is becoming.
A4- Be real with kids - Model how to approach different real world scenarios. Role play it. Show empathy, kindness and compassion and responsibility. #satchat
#satchat Great response. If we don’t teach and model how to manage challenging digital situations, Who Will? We can’t ignore this and expect children to perform admirably.
A5-As a writer, I proof everything. I am chagrined to see student work with errors and be told by teachers correcting comes later. Teach students to proof and correct. Slow students down. Ask: Did you say what you meant to say? #satchat
But it's also important to model how to deal with negative comments, with inappropriate and unwanted interactions. How to report users and deal with misuse, we have to also model that and make sure students understand it can happen to everyone and it's not acceptable. #satchat
But it's also important to model how to deal with negative comments, with inappropriate and unwanted interactions. How to report users and deal with misuse, we have to also model that and make sure students understand it can happen to everyone and it's not acceptable. #satchat
We must familiarize ourselves with the social media platforms our students use like @instagram and @Snapchat
Many of our students aren’t on Twitter!
#satchat
A4 Model the delight and benefit of building connections. My elementary students are reaching out to NJ educators and invasive species experts, seeking feedback on their teacher toolkit: https://t.co/v2X9QKgxSl. They’ve received excellent, helpful advice and comments.
#satchat
A4 A great way to model what a good digital citizen looks like is to be one. Be the example. Go over scenarios with Ss and talk about what the right thing to do is in each one. #satchat
Have you read the book _Bored & Brillliant_? Based on your comment, it'd be right up your alley. Or check out the challenge that preceded the book: https://t.co/yX5eiUBOS8#satchat
A4 elem class or school twitter accounts where T controls account but kids learn to dictate tweets and respond, T models use of social media, T uses social media w older Ss as learning tools, kids learn rules of ownership of accounts - analyze terms of agreement #satchat
A4 Our School Instagram account has a large following and I model how social media can be used for good. Can teach digital citizenship if the principal doesn’t model it! #satchat
A4B Share examples of responsible and beneficial use - meaningful blogs; Twitter accounts that elevate discussion and don’t denigrate others; effective, creative infographics
#satchat
A4C Consistently model citation of sources. Students will become accustomed to seeing citations and realize this is part of responsible digital citizenship.
#satchat
digital citizenship seems to focus on the 10% who use it wrong rather than understanding 90% use it right. I’d rather be teaching reputation management and how to leverage social media to amplify voice and create opportunities. Manage the exceptions. #satchat
Each day I am on SM I see examples of adults behaving badly, unethically & rude 2each other- as educators we need 2ensure the next generation knows this is not right and not acceptable. I google every candidate I hire & check their SM use-Be a good person on & offline #satchat
Today, I signed Senate Bill 1140, which allows faith-based agencies that contract with Oklahoma to continue to operate in accordance with their beliefs. https://t.co/298rcyq3Mg
Q5: Qs for Ss (personal)-Would I say out loud what I type online? Do I think this is kind? What does this add to my life/their life? What could be possible outcomes of what I say online? Do I think this is something my role model/mentor would approve of? #satchat
A5: Would I say, in person, what I'm about to post? Is what I'm posting safe? Would I be comfortable if I knew my parents/teacher knew I was posting this? Would I want someone to post this about me? If this post were about/of me, would I be okay with that? #Satchat
Yes! This is not something that teachers can ignore or expect someone else to teach. If you have a school librarian they are experts in this and could support and train teachers alongside your IT teachers #SatChat
A4: I often show my students things I post on my Twitter profile...they love seeing how nerdy I am...I love showing them what Social Media can be!
#Satchat
A2. A good Digital Citizen realizes that all posts are public and permanent, doesn't post when angry or upset, seeks to help or inform, considers feelings & interests of others. #satchat
A5: Is this source credible? Is this {insert action here} something I want out there in perpetuity? How might {} affect others? What is my purpose in {}? Am I a plus dog in this digital sled dog team? Will my future self benefit from {}? #satchat
So important to understand that SM is a tool and just like any tool it can be used appropriately and have positive results OR it can be used inappropriately and have negative results! #satchat
A4: I often show my students things I post on my Twitter profile...they love seeing how nerdy I am...I love showing them what Social Media can be!
#Satchat
Remove the stigma and deficit mindset associated with social media=> we have the be the models of how powerful a tool it can be; how it can flatten the globe, build interconnectedness and foster empathy #satchat
Yes! Begin and end with the good. The digital world offers huge opportunities we’re barely beginning to tap. And how effective is teaching focused on what not to do? #UseTech4Good#digcit#satchat
A3 Another challenge is that digital citizenship curriculum focuses on right/wrong in online interactions but ignores the citizenship of social advocacy. Teach kids how to use social media for change & they will own that. There are plenty of examples of this. #satchat
A5 Is this safe? Is this real? What is the source? How will my post effect others? How will it effect how others see me? Would I do this in person? Should I have this exchange in person instead? #satchat
A5: It's crucial to teach kids to ask this question before they share anything on social media: "How will this impact me and anyone who sees it, both now and in the future?" #satchat#HackLearning
A5: Questions for Ss- Will your post lift someone up or tear them down? Will it inspire or deflate? Will it teach something new or reinforce the status quo? Will it unite or segregate? Is it hurtful or caring? #satchat
A4 For the younger Ss we take real world situations and digitize them. For etiquette we would say you don't like Ss yelling at you, don't type with caps lock on. Or don't just type someone else's words that's like copying them. No child likes to be copied or mimicked #satchat
A4 my own daughter stopped following me on twitter - told me I was "too boring" - I took that as a compliment....as long as I'm cooler in real life - lol #satchat

Parents also need to involved in this. Upcoming workshop for parents in my community on what it is and how they can help their child to be a good digital citizen. #satchat
THIS! YES! And we can't wait until middle school to talk about and discuss this! By then, they already have misinformation and bad habits formed. #Satchat
A4 A great way to model what a good digital citizen looks like is to be one. Be the example. Go over scenarios with Ss and talk about what the right thing to do is in each one. #satchat
A5. They should ask themselves, "would an adult I respect approve of this tweet, post, upload, etc?" Before they share whatever they are sharing. #satchat
True, but I find Twitter immensely helpful personally. Twitter is how I connect with my most valuable #PLN friends. I need to probably use ifttt (if this then that) to post on multiple platforms like instagram. #satchat
We must familiarize ourselves with the social media platforms our students use like @instagram and @Snapchat
Many of our students aren’t on Twitter!
#satchat
Absolutely! It reduces the chances of having arguments. A digital identity, just like an actual identity can be subjected to disrepute if one invests more time in arguing rather than discussing a premise. This is a great point! #satchat
A5: Some ?s students should consider before posting:
1. Is it something that you’d want your family to see? Future children?
2. Is it something you’d want college admissions or future employers to see?
3. Is it something you’d want someone else to post about you? #satchat
Schools have become "homes away from home"-no longer r the 3 r's enough-we need 2establish core values, model excellence & character & rely less on drill, kill, test and punish. SEL is now the big buzzword, but it is simply treating every child as if they were your own #satchat
A5: Questions for Ss- Will your post lift someone up or tear them down? Will it inspire or deflate? Will it teach something new or reinforce the status quo? Will it unite or segregate? Is it hurtful or caring? #satchat
A5 Would I say this to someone's face? In 20 years would I be embasrassed by this? Would a future employer not hire me because of this? What would I think if it was somone else posting this? #satchat
A5: Some ?s students should consider before posting:

That’s so important. When someone googles you they should see all the great stuff you do. The only thing worse than having a bad digital footprint, is having no digital footprint. I tell parents to by their kids names as a domain. Control your online narrative. #SatChat
A4 Teachers need an online presence. Write a blog, participate in Twitter chats, tweet classroom activities. Let the students see what and talk about choices you made. #satchat
A5: Would you want your future Boss or College admissions/advisor to see this? Would I want this said about me? Would I want my grandmother/father to know/see this about me? #satchat
A4 This is where blended learning comes into its own. Creating a class website / Wiki / Blog, requiring Ss to interact with each other online & T acting as a moderator. Debriefing on these experiences can be powerful learnings.
#satchat
A5 I question what “digitally responsible” means because for those of us that use this medium for advocacy, there are quite a few who believe that any disruption at all is negative. That’s so untrue & unless you include these narratives, you’re not doing this w/fidelity #Satchat
Explaining that their social media presence means they are now a part of a very large network, and what responsibility that holds, is very important. An excerpt from "The Square and The Tower" would be a great class discussion @nfergus@LevelUpVillage#satchat
Daughter's comment does speak to one of social media's Achilles Heels: Being impulsive & sensational in what we share for purposes of garnering eyeballs/likes/followers by standing out in stream makes dicey foundation for citizenship. Instead, aspire to loftier purposes. #satchat

Is this necessary?

Love this question! What am I trying to say? Am I sharing too much? What are others trying to say and how can I react in the most positive way? #satchat
Great point! Our kids taught the faculty how to use Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube, musically and Twitter. My own kids use “house party” with their friends. Kids said Facebook was for 46 year olds... Hey, I said that was my age. #Satchat

#Satchat Teaching students about digital responsibilty is tough, they are connected to device all fo the time. We use simiuaktion to teach other things, how about a simulated tech app that demonstrates good and bad choices using SM?
A2. The digital world takes skills to navigate successfully. Not just in how to do it, but what should be done as well. It is in all of our best interests to ensure the children are aware and using the tools properly. #satchat

A5 do I need to post this right now? Would I want my little sister or brother to see this? Will this impact my life or future life in a negative way? Is this kind, helpful, supportive? Will I lose a friend? #satchat
A6 cont. Social Media allows for greater access to our schools and classrooms. It creates transparency and allows stakeholders to better understand what is happening in our schools. It also allows others (experts) to connect with us and improve our teaching and learning #satchat

“Why was this message made?” If for any malintent...don’t post, share, send!”
“Would I say this out loud, in front of anyone?” If not, don’t post, share, send!”

A6: Teaching good digital citizenship has the power to bring our world community closer & provide a better understanding of our diversity. It can help to broaden our perspectives and make a difference. #satchat
A5. 1. How would you feel if someone used harsh words against you?
2. How would you feel if you were continuously followed by someone?
3. How would you feel if someone knew about you and you didn't know anything about them?
#satchat
Q5: Qs for Ss @ school/ research- How can you best use tech to promote good searching habits & thoughtful research? Does this source URL look like a credible source?(ex: .org,.net) How are you managing your time digitally between tasks to complete your work? #satchat
Totally, Bill. Whole world of teaching/modeling opportunities related to who we follow (or un-follow) and why, the shape & reach of bubbles we choose to build for ourselves via social media. #satchat
Harder to remove yet not impossible, which I think is an important discussion, too. Because we love to tell kids 100% of what they post is permanent (because we love a fear-based approach), but does it have to be? #satchat
A5 ask kids to generate what questions they should ask before posting? Wonder how teens would respond differently to this question than parents or educators? #satchat
A6 This is new territory. As teachers, many of us are still learning and figuring it out. By teaching digital citizenship, we're giving our students a head start and better preparing them for what will come next. #satchat
A5. We should all ask:
Is this post helpful/ factual?
Is this necessary?
How could others interpret this post?
What would my parents/teacher think about this?
#satchat
Not really a direct answer to any question, but I also urge schools to engage parents in the #digcit conversation. Difficult when parents had our elementary or middle schoolers a smartphone and aren't involved in app selection and usage #satchat
There are SO many different aspects to this topic. This graphic could be broken into color coded areas with groups of students sharing out their thoughts about each area. Having them write their thoughts takes thinking to the next level. #satchat
This is why, when I was Head of Curriculum for a HS Gr7-12 Of 1200 Ss & 100 Ts, if Ts were using blended learning they advised me who from the school’s leadership team had their level of access to the site / blog, etc to monitor & if needed. #satchat
I agree wholeheartedly, but children and teens don't always have the maturity to think long-term about the implications and consequences of their actions. That's our challenge as educators and parents. #satchat
A5 Would I say this to someone's face? In 20 years would I be embasrassed by this? Would a future employer not hire me because of this? What would I think if it was somone else posting this? #satchat
#satchat The theatre teacher uses Facebook so the students use it to access her info. I like them using different platforms for different audiences...authentic writing does that & social media posting is our newest genre.
Great point! Our kids taught the faculty how to use Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube, musically and Twitter. My own kids use “house party” with their friends. Kids said Facebook was for 46 year olds... Hey, I said that was my age. #Satchat
A6: The online world has become an integral part of our daily lives. Good digital citizenship can lead to many of the benefits of teaching prosocial behavior in creating a productive and nurturing culture that we want our students to grow up in #satchat
We must familiarize ourselves with the social media platforms our students use like @instagram and @Snapchat
Many of our students aren’t on Twitter!

We should teach Digital Citizenship all year long in all classes & grades. These issues come up daily during conversations. Teachers must never miss opportunity to engage & teach students.
#Satchat
Digital citizenship is absolutely something we should all be learning together and from one another. Let students take the lead, too. Some assumptions on here that adults know what’s best. Many kids have taken upon themselves to #UseTech4Good. @thelivbits@CurranCentral#satchat
One place we can, and must, do better, is involving parents and families in these conversations. I know it's hard to reach parents en masse, but we have to keep sharing resources, ideas, and welcoming their voices in these conversations too. #satchat
A6. Digitization is our future, and ensuring that transition from the real world to the digital one is as smooth as possible is our responsibility. We need digital citizenship if we want a better, evolved and a rational society on the internet as much as off it. #satchat
A5 and I try to remember that every inappropriate activity kids exhibit in SM has occurred in their own writing or image captures or behavior in prior generations - it’s just so viral and permanent in the online world #satchat
A5: We need to get students to be skeptical with the world today... however, we also need to teach them to accept data and not ignore evidence if it’s not convenient! #STEM#Disposition#satchat
I often share the idea of a domain of one's own, and when do we involve students in advocating for their personal info/digital content IN SPACES THAT SCHOOLS PROVIDE?! We want them to be cognizant of their snaps & posts but do they demand respect in academic spaces too? #satchat
A6. You get what you give. Providing students with the tools to use tech properly may limit the proliferation of the fake news we see so rampant today... #satchat
A6: recently was discussing this exact Q. By teaching #digitalcitizenship & #citizenship in gen'l, by talking about what it means to be part of a community, children will hopefully learn to lead lives w/empathy & compassion and know that actions have +/- consequences #satchat
Yes!!!! And sometimes the mistakes make you learn faster!!!! If kids understand their posts are a story for the world, they become more aware in these spaces 🌎 #digcit#satchat#KidsCanTeachUs

Familiarizing ourselves is great, but we need to resist the urge to adopt these platforms in classrooms and turn everything into a new lesson just to "hook" the kids into learning things we think they need to learn. https://t.co/gB6jsuN8wx#satchat
We can debate our immigration policy, but the true value of a human being cannot be measured by educational level or economic status. The true value of a human being lies in the nature of her creation, the uniqueness of her character, and the limitlessness of her potential.

.Agree - fine line between skepticism and cynicism... same as productive struggle and frustration... helping teachers master@these skills is so important! #satchat
A6: It’s not about teaching platforms, tools or navigating, but about being discerning, with integrity. If Ss have that they’re the dog, not the tail, and that is ownership and agency. #satchat
I think class accounts should be the default. I’m on here as a parent and I have an opinion about a lot of things, but I respect that schools are there to teach. Can’t teach this without modeling. #satchat
A6 The benefits are that our Ss will hopefully carry being a good digital citizen over into other parts of their lives. So much of the thinking is just good practice for everyday! #satchat
A6 Being a good person who cares about other people will make us all better. Perhaps we should just drop the word “digital” from this. That distinction isn’t necessary considering that this should be the case at all times #Satchat

A5 fundamental Qs has to always be: Would you say this to the person or to the people seeing / reading this, if you met them in person? Why? Would you be ok with a future employer reading / seeing this? If cannnot answer yes, then don’t post!
#satchat
Yes! We’re still far too reactive with this. Introduce digital citizenship early and kids grow up with a perspective focused on its force for good. #digcit#satchat
A1: so many great answers already. We must teach Digital Citizenship to prepare our students for the world in which they live. Just like in other areas, we can’t neglect to show the way & then get mad or disappointed when they don’t know. Purposeful instruction #satchat
