Hey everyone!! I'm happy to be here tonight - I'm Margaret! I hope that some of our #VSTE18 friends can join us. I'm working on catching up after a few days of learning, watching Hallmark Christmas movies and staring at my tree tonight! #HappyToBeHome#NoVAedchat
A1 I saw a ton of coding examples at #VSTE18 - for learners of all ages!! I heard a few Ts sharing that it's part of all they do regularly. Thinking and problem solving and using robots and logic! #NoVAedchat
A1: This week, I have been letting my students explore #HourOfCode resources. I have been letting them explore a few, like Kodable and Lightbot, and share reviews on #@Flipgrid . #NoVAedChat
A1: I know some basics of coding in the classroom with Sphero's, https://t.co/IiaHiFyQnV, etc. Though I am looking for more ideas on how to incorporate coding into classrooms with what Ts are already doing, so don't become "1 more thing" like the technology standards. #NoVAedChat
Q1: What have you seen/tried/heard about with #coding in classrooms? A: Introducing coding with https://t.co/SYrEfrsn8o, Scratch, Finch Robots, Tynker, Unplugged coding games, incorporation of Ozobots I to content areas #NoVAedchat
Hey Andrea! Yippee for jumping right in to a chat! remember to include the hashtag #NoVAedchat so everyone can see your tweets!! SOOO glad you are here! @andreakwalsh
A1: we did coding THIS week and the students loved everything about it! They want to do more. It’s such a fun engaging way to get them thinking 🤔 #HourOfCode#NoVAedChat
I used to love logic puzzles... that is a great start to getting some logical thinking, anything that we can build in those base skills (logic, processes, steps, noticing repetition) in the work we are doing #NoVaedchat
A2: Coding allows students to learn problem solving, perseverance, and helps them see how things work- it also promotes innovation and creativity #NoVAedChat
A2: coding supports students’ problem solving and critical thinking skills. Helps Ss understand how computers and others devices function beyond being the end user of a video game etc. #NoVAedChat
Hi everyone!! I'm Abbey Miller! SBTS at Orange Hunt ES. Jumping in late tonight! Where is @MrsJYears?? She is the one who introduced me to coding in the STEAM academy course! #novaedchat
A2: Coding and programming careers are TAKING OFF! Coding will not only be “something fun” we did in school but could be a DOOR for some students to a new and exciting career path #NoVAedChat#HourOfCode
A1: As a tech specialist I tried to encourage coding in classrooms, but it was sometimes a hard sell. "Not enough time, too much to do" was a common response. Coding can support the curriculum, rather than being something extra. #NoVAedchat
A2: Coding reinforces so many skills that Ss need to be successful from problem solving, sequencing, critical thinking, collaboration, trial and error/perseverance, I could go on and on. #NoVAedChat
Q2: Positive aspects/benefits to using coding in learning? Hard to beat the state of flow my Ss across all grade levels achieve while coding! Collaboration, problem solving, critical thinking, RESILIENCE, empowerment.
@hourofcode#VSTE18#hourocode#NoVAedchat
A1: I’ve tried #hourofcode, the unplugged lessons from https://t.co/vS5zXuNErv, Lego mindstorms, sphero, and other coding opportunities when I was a classroom teacher. I noticed a lot of Ss enjoyed learning this language & I wanted to let them explore it more #NoVAedchat
@FoxMillESAAP and I facilitated an unplugged activity with staff after-school to generate excitement! In addition to serving as an introduction to algorithms, it’s a great relationship building tool.

A2 Coding is problem solving, organization, planning, and language learning all wrapped into one. Those skills can help students in all classes. #NoVAedchat
A2 Coding has so many #fcpsPOG connections! Talk about students who are goal directed and resilient. I persevere through difficult tasks and situations and I make a plan to achieve my goals! #novaedchat
I love jumping in ith the Ss and working with them and challenging them. It's a great way to get them talking and sharing their thinking and also what is bothering them. It's a great way to teach them that its ok to fail and get mad, but we have to keep going. #NovaEdchat
A3: I think teachers are hesitant to try coding because it seems overwhelming and they don't know where to start- Some teachers might not think they have enough time #NoVAedChat
A3: 1. thinking they HAVE TO have computers to code #not 2. Fear because they don’t understand it. 3. Pushback from admin that it does not align with standards #NoVAedChat
A3: some teachers may look at coding as “one more thing” they may not be able to see all the benefits it provides and just look at it narrow minded and see the students “playing games”. And a big reason is TIME. #NovaEdchat
A3 Coding can be intimidating if you've never done it, OR if you learned how to do it on early computers. (Pascal and Fortran anyone?) Like many new skills, teachers can be reluctant to introduce something into their classroom when they're not the expert. #NoVAedchat
I think this is a big deal - fear of not understanding. I think we have even more of a mindset challenge with computer science/coding than we do with math! People think they are good or bad at it, but it's a skill we can all learn!! #NoVAedchat
A3: I think there are a couple reasons that Ts do't use it in their classroom. 1 being they are afraid to look like they don't understand what it is & the Ss will ask something they can't answer. 2nd, that they don't think they can do it & teach for SOLs in Spring. #NoVAedChat
A3: Just like many things, we need courage to try something new. Many teachers have never coded and don’t want to fail. We need to model persistency for our Ss. #NoVAedChat
A2: The benefits can be endless. I noticed that Ss practice flexibility in thinking, problem solving, communication skills, and creative/productive thinking #NoVAedchat
It's hard to give up control over something you don't understand. But that's when the beauty happens. Watch the students rise up and help each other. They'll love it even more when they can help the teacher learn what they know. #NoVAedChat
A4 @scratch is a good place to start because it is so kid friendly and accessible, but it can also grow with students and do more as they learn more. #NoVAedchat
A4.2 I'm also LOVING working with my son on coding for an @arduino With all the different sensors that can be added, I see that as a great fit for science classrooms. #NoVAedchat
A4: I've heard about a few different ways from Lego WeDo kits, Ozobots, Sphero, Scratch and Scratch Jr, Digital Breakouts, etc. Would love to have more and do more. Always looking for new ideas. #NoVAedChat
#NoVAedchat A5 #coding tools in content classrooms
Scratch has great tutorials to help all get started. Create a story can lead to connections to the LA curriculum.
A5 Experimenting, engineering, and designing are at the heart of computer science. Those are certainly skills that would be helpful in content classes. #NoVAedchat
A5 Experimenting, engineering, and designing are at the heart of computer science. Those are certainly skills that would be helpful in content classes. #NoVAedchat
A5: Allow for flexibility in thinking, testing of hypotheses, and the belief that failure is learning. Design challenges have been a way I have promoted this thinking without coding #NoVAedChat
A5 learning how to be be good digital citizens, test hypothesis, experiment, create, change and explore are all ways computer science can be integrated into the classroom #NoVAedchat
A5:Facilitating innovative thinking, normalizing failure and perseverance through modeling and highlighting famous mentors who succeeded through failure and by thinking different. #NoVAedChat
A6: learn more about ways to integrate coding into instruction- especially using "coding vocabulary" I also want to learn more about Scratch and try using it with my students #NoVAedChat
A6: I plan to... locate and use coding resources appropriate for k-3 students and share with my staff. I will model coding practices during my lab/tech lessons for teachers! #NoVAedChat
A4: going into year 3 on the @codeorg Advisory Committee for the HOC tutorials. I can vouch for the amazing resources there that are #1 content-specific and #2 no login required. #NoVAedChat
A6: When I think about computer science and my school @HamptonOaksElem I plan to find more ways to incorporate the skills of computer science into the classrooms. I plan on trying to find ways to get more materials to code. #NoVAedChat
When sending Ss off to work I love the phrase, "Go make mistakes."
Initial reactions are priceless. Overtime the environment changes and mistakes are a normal part of our learning process. #NoVAedchat
A6: I plan to finally get the new CS endorsement! And continue to promote CS in our community. @HerndonHS is finally adding #CSPrinciples for SY19-20! #NoVAedChat
