The #educoach hashtag is used by instructional coaches around the world. We chat each Wednesday at 8pm CST on Twitter and use the hashtag throughout the week to share resources, ask questions and collaborate with instructional coaches.
Laura here-director of teaching and learning @knowledgeworks. My win for this week was completing a site visit opportunity analysis report from a first visit to a new district. #educoach
Let’s get started with tonight’s topic: Planning Presentations
We’ll be referencing a blog post by @ddmeyer:
https://t.co/Te5remFBVH You might want to pull it up if you haven't read. #educoach
I’m Steve, a tech integrator from Canandaigua, NY. My success story is I posted my first podcast yesterday. Listen to it here: https://t.co/5cAIlJSG2B#educoach
A1: I've presented how to use std assessment data to drive instruction 3x - first to two, second to six, third to 4. No powerpoint, probably boring though. #educoach
A1 I just did two presentations yesterday at the #iareads conference. Sessions were 50 min. I used Google Slides. My goal with slides is to make them visually appealing - with limited words! #educoach
A1: I present to my faculty frequently, about 45 teachers, usually somewhere on campus, covered required planning, instructional strategies, classroom management, technology #educoach
A1: Two recent presentations-one on building teacher leader capacity and the other was on nourishing staff buy-in. I had 50 participants for the second one. Colorado. Usually create intended learning targets or outcomes/deliverables aligned to the topic descriptions. #educoach
A1: I will need to present for staff (50) at back to school. Need to share benefits of using IC and encourage participation in program. (3rd year...needs to take off!) #educoach
A1 I’ve spent a couple of years training and coaching Ts on GSuite and Schoology. However, my favorite thing to do is work with Ts to help them integrate tech in class. I love going in to classes! #educoach
A1: I give presentations for my district's Induction teachers, advisory committees, and National Board Advisory committee. These are yearly presentations. #educoach
A2 We had a session at our summer institute where the presenter didn't use any slides - just engaging vocabulary activities. It was one of the most well received! Good reminder - we don't always need ppt or slides! #educoach
A2 I saw @jmattmiller give a presentation earlier in the year and he was great. It was a mix of listening and doing. That’s what I try to do too! #educoach
A2: Most recently, I'd have to say Heath's keynote, author of recent book Power of Moments, at Carnegie Conference. Usually keynotes only stick for a bit, but that conference had 3 that were amazing! #educoach
A1: I gave presentations on Learning Targets this past year. I really worked on following up more effectively and including admin in a more meaningful way #educoach
Q2: I attended a workshop at a conference focusing on the integration of social studies with other contents. The presenter used music, pictures, artifacts, and costumes to engage learners. It was exciting, told in story format. I loved being in the historical moment #educoach
A3: learning is involved-even keynotes where they have partner chats-an element of processing or reflection on current practices; forward thinking principles, rigorous, sharing with others; use of music and manipulatives. #educoach
A3: One of the simplest innovations I saw was a silent video or GIF of a demo so the speaker could easily walk through the process as needed...Don't have to sit near computer to do so. Simple but impactful #educoach
Establish common ground - coaching fits with what teachers want to do (student achievement), change mindset from optional to we are all on board! At least that's what I think now, we'll see when July rolls around.... #educoach
A2: I went to @jimknight99 Coaching Institute and the section on the Impact Cycle changed the way I will think about observing teachers and coaching forever #educoach
A1: Recent PD has been on the use of mentor texts to support literacy instruction. Sessions vary in length but I usually avg from 40-60 participants. And, I’m loving @SmorePages for my presentations! #educoach
A3: I love presentations where the participants get ample time to discuss the topics and connect with each other. I also benefit from a lot of modeling #educoach
A3: For me a a learner, the use of music, story telling, being "hands and minds on" and being able to constantly collaborate with others I don't know- hearing other's perspective grows me #growthmindset#educoach
I'm not sure what the FT IC uses, possibly a blend. I am familiar with @SweeneyDiane SCC, did a reboot with @leannaharris22 earlier this month. Looking at Impact cycle @jimknight99 now. So many good options out there... #educoach

A4: Lack of differentiation or awareness of the participants readiness/expertise; sitting and getting; and when they look/sound like they'd rather be doing anything else-no passion is total downer! #educoach
Q5: How do you “testify” as @ddmeyer describes on his blog https://t.co/Te5remFBVH? What are the truths that you want to convey in every presentation? #educoach - You might want to skim post listed. :)
A5: I hope to testify the development model while exemplifying my core values: Why is this important? What is it and what are we going to do about it? How are we going to do it? Who else will know/knows about it? #educoach
A3 I think the best presentations are clear, useful, easy to follow, authentic, honoring of my ability to make choices, inspiring, funny, involving varied activities--off the top of my head 🤔 #educoach
A5a Love this: In every presentation I give, I’m trying to testify to these truths:
-I love this work. I need you to feel that.
-I think teaching is important work. Feel that too.
-But not so important we can’t laugh about it. -Dan Meyer #educoach
A6: I usually try to anticipate questions the participants might have. I want to practice the stories I will tell. I might start adding pictures into the PPT as a way to remind myself #educoach
I try to narrow down what I'm looking for and then choose. Such as last year we wanted to use new text protocols. We had used Save the Last Word for me a lot. I found text based ones on the site and then narrowed down based on need. #educoach
A4 I don't like it when people do not honor their audience's expertise or talk down to audiences. I don't like it when people attack different approaches that are different than theirs by trivializing what authors actually say. #educoach
A6 When I am practicing a presentation-especially a new one-I feel the need to be over prepared. I read through everything and try to anticipate questions. #educoach
A6 I like to test out different stories in different contexts before integrating them. No surprise here, but I really find video recording my presentations to be super helpful. #educoach
A7: I usually figure out the Learning Target for the presentation first. I want to use @LearningForward Standards for Professional Learning more in my planning #educoach
A7: I like to make a folder to gather resources and research first; create the learning targets or outcomes w/ differentiation in mind and QFT; create an draft outline for flow; design the slides; embed aligned videos, activities, protocols, etc. #educoach
A7: Get info on the audience, poll them on prior knowledge, and present playing to the strength of the group. Use the leaders and strengths in the room to connect new knowledge with their prior knowledge and expertise. #educoach
A8: I want to start using these questions from the blog: -What is your big idea?
-If your big idea is aspirin, then what is the teacher’s headache?
-If your big idea is the answer, then what is the question?#educoach
A7 I learn about the presentation topic. I contact my PLN and ask them about it. I get with my TI tribe at school and we discuss the training. Then we write a google doc with the training info and a syllabus. Finally we create a presentation (slides/Nearpod etc). #educoach
That's why I rarely do a slide with words. If I have to put words I find a great picture to incorporate them with. Not just picture on side. Like this.... #educoach
Q9: How is your process different when you are planning for on-going professional learning with teachers in your district? Compared to a big conference or workshop. #educoach
A8: His is way different in that he really reflects about the narrative and story aspects/unpacks those into a google doc, aligned with possible images prior to making any slides whereas I do all of that at once, ha, or try to! #educoach
A9: Ongoing requires day to day differentiation, more workshop time for the participants, and using feedback to guide my instruction so collecting that feedback and also using formative assessment. #educoach
A9: If the Professional Learning is on-going, I will treat the presentation as just one stage in a larger process and maybe incorporate more processing time and inquiry-type activities #educoach
A8: I like to leave time to come up with a goal and plan of action for follow up after presenting. That way the ownership of the presentation shifts the knowledge and power back to the audience hands at the end. #educoach
