#2ndchat Archive
#2ndchat is a Twitter hashtag that can be used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other second grade educators from around the world. Every other week we will discuss a different topic. It's a great way to help grow your PLN (Professional/Personal Learning Network) and share ideas with others.

Hey! It's time for ! I am so excited to talk about project based learning tonight!
Introduce yourself and your location!
I'm Carol from Birmingham, AL.
Patrick Jr currently in a practicum course in 2nd grade
How are you tonight? It may take everyone one a minute to get here. :)
Hi! So excited that you are here!
Molly from Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX
Patrick Jr currently in a practicum course in 2nd grade in princeton NJ
Let's take a poll! Where do you fall on project based learning?
doing good. Chilling with my sick son.
:( I hope he feels better soon!
We don't do it at our school but I did it in preschool.
Lisa from Evansville, Indiana so excited about this topic
Hi Lisa! So happy you are here. PBL is SO exciting! I love talking about it!
I feel like I don't get enough time for PBL with my resource sped kids
Hmmm...maybe tonight we brainstorm ways to work it in!
Q1: What is project based learning or pbl?
getting ready to make leprechaun pudding with the kids having them follow written directions only
In preschool we would find a topic the kids loved and discover anything to do with it, math, reading etc.
A1 embedding standards into real life applications, with a purpose!
A1: PBL involves Ss learning through DOING! They actively discover/take in info & make meaning.
A1: Students work on a problem, project, or challenge over an extended period of time that involves real world(theirs) application.
It is not a project. Here is a great visual/chart to see the difference in a project and pbl. https://t.co/oIC4qEqvQy
We'll learn about it tonight!
A1(more thoughts): In PBL Ss do the work/"heavy lifting" to answer a question over time while T facilitates
Q2: Can you give a good example of a pbl? How is it different than a project?
A3: I've done 3 in my classroom. We made learning games to help a kindergarten class.
A3: I have blogged about it because there are not many resources for pbl in the primary grades.
It really helped me understand the difference!
A3: In the game pbl, my students learned measurement, procedural writing, problem solving, cooperation AND helped 5 year olds!
A3: They were so engaged because it meant something to them. They weren't just making up a "how to" just to check off a skill.
A2 not sure if this meets definition. Wrote persuasive letters to principal to paint mural on wall https://t.co/wvCdaUnr5O
A3: They knew the K students and their teacher would need to know how to play their games. Have you tried to write game directions?
Yes, it could be pbl. Did they poll/research what others wanted?
It was so fun. There are several posts in the series because I like to break things up. :) There's a fun video to see
We get the kids to not only write the directions for math games but add student expectations.
A2: My Ss created products to explain objects in the sky (sun, moon, earth) to younger Ss.
Ss are writing directions to how to blow a bubble with gum. It is hard to do and we practiced today with real gum.
Q3: Which content areas work well with pbl?
A3: I find it easiest to start with science/social studies and then the others just happen!
A2: A data analysis unit lends itself to a math PBL. Ss can develop a survey, collect data, organize & graph, then report.
A3 I've tried social science and science
I can't wait to check this out!
And then they connect all the others- that's why I love pbl! It makes sense!
Q4: What will you have to change to teach with pbl?
A3: A PBL can be done with any content area, but I tend to agree that starting with Sci./SS makes sense. https://t.co/zNuignFP3O
A3: I find it easiest to start with science/social studies and then the others just happen!
A4: The biggest change is the teacher's role! It's hard for tchrs to let the kids have control of it- but that's the fun part!
I think it's easier to jump off from those topics but yes it can work with all.
A4 MINDSET first! Letting go and allowing kids to explore and dig deep
Totally agree! https://t.co/h5qBhLs7DT
A4: The biggest change is the teacher's role! It's hard for tchrs to let the kids have control of it- but that's the fun part!
The kids are going to be more active in the class and teacher needs to release some control of "teaching" kid driven
A4: You have to let the pbl go places that were not planned. I'm amazed at the things we learn!
A4: You have to be flexible!
YES! The kids will be excited but they will be engaged and learning TONS! https://t.co/dM4A7RORgl
The kids are going to be more active in the class and teacher needs to release some control of "teaching" kid driven
Q4 my school is data driven; standards obsessed; common assessments etc; a separate period called project work;
A4: Your lesson plan structure! :-) PBL is messy. Each lesson may not fit into a single day. PBLs occur over a period of time.
That's what makes PBLs so fun!
I have never met my pbl "overview" dates but that's okay. https://t.co/KxnFJ5hV0q

A4: You need to be creative w/your time if you have time restrictions.Think about the focus standards. Make it work in those times.
That hurts my heart but happy to hear project work time is included.
Combination of creativity + cross curricular
YES. PBL actually solves the problem of so much content and so little time. https://t.co/ix7LZJYV1o
Combination of creativity + cross curricular
A4: We have to stop making subjects isolated. We don't do that in our adult life- everything is combined. You use what you need.
Q5: How do assess during pbl?
A5: Assessment is very important in pbl. PBL is not just kids working on a project. The pbl has purpose and thought behind it.
A5: When I plan a PBL, I focus on few standards that I want to focus in on for assessment knowing it will cover more.
Assess both content objectives (TEKS, in my case) and 21st Century skills.
A5: Assess both content objectives (TEKS, in my case) and 21st Century skills.
A5: Checkpoints with the teacher are important. I mark places in my pbl calendar for formative assessment.
A5: Just make sure you don't try to assess all your kids are learning. They will go past anything you have dreamed they could learn
Time's going fast. Q6 coming up!
Q6: What's the best part of pbl? What's the hardest part?
A6: The best part is the engagement level for my students & how driven they are to work on it- even above recess :)
A6: The hardest part is time management/organization. I'm organized but they are so many places, it's hard to keep up at times.
Q6 excitement from students
A6-Hardest-embracing the mess. Best-students are motivated and excited.
You do have to embrace the mess. For really messy, in progress pbls I use copy boxes for each group. :)
A6: The best part of PBL? It's definitely Ss ownership of their own learning.
A6: Sometimes it's hard to contain the excitement to have someone ask "How do you have time to do that?" I'm still teaching!
We only have 19 minutes left in the chat! 2 more questions left!
Small spaces to work and store materials is a challenge
Q7: Where can you find pbl resources?
A6: The hardest part of PBL is making sure to front-load all needed skills for Ss ahead of when they will need to use these skills.
I agree. I have also learned I can't anticipate all they may need. Just learn as we go.
Yes. Copy boxes with dividers can work well.
Q7 Nell Duke Inside Information; kit from Scholastic; ILA website; Buck Institute;
So many interesting and exciting resources to view when the chat ends
I know! I can't wait to look at them!
are you going to do a transcript again tonight!
Yes! I will do a Storify later!
Q8: What suggestions do you have for those that want to try pbl?
A8: Start SLOW! Try one. You will be hooked! Find a friend on twitter or at your school try it with you.
You speak TRUTH! Many pbls boards are just project boards. There is a BIG difference! .
A8 Find a buddy who will go on this adventure with you. Just try it!
A8: Start small. The beauty of PBL is that it is organic. You can revise as you go/make changes for next year.
A8: Find someone that will brainstorm with you. I teamed up with a friend from Twitter for my 1st one.
A8: Get experts in your school, community or online for your pbl. I had a game company Skype with us. So fun!
this chat is making me rethink my earth unit coming up in science.
Great advice! https://t.co/3Jp0a847or

I would love to team with someone; could use a mentor! Any takers?
That's the best part of chats. It helps us become reflective. We are better together!
I'm no expert but I have tried 3. I am grateful for those that helped me & want to pay it forward.
A8: I would also suggest that you really look at your standards- what makes sense to teach together?
I just pinned it and will look tomorrow.
Well guys, our time is about up. Thank you for coming tonight! I'll send out an archive link later!
In 2 weeks, we will chat about iPad task cards/centers :)
Thanks My first was a BLAST! :-)
Tried to register for BIE conference in Nashville next month; CLOSED! 😞 even wrote grant and received funding; need replacement
Do you know of any other pbl conferences she could attend? https://t.co/P4ulxYvXnQ

Yeah! I'm so glad you liked it. Please come back next time!
Thanks again and I can't wait to see all the tweets about your pbl ideas!
