Hi everyone! I am happy to welcome you to our first Twitter chat for the book LAUNCH: Using Design Thinking to Boost Creativity and Bring Out the Maker in Every Student! #dubMSela
I'm Jennifer, and I teach middle school reading at Karrer Middle School. Please introduce yourself with your name, what you teach, and where. #dubMSela
Our chat will consist of 6 questions, beginning with Q1 at 7:35 with subsequent questions every 10 minutes thereafter. Please label your answers A1, A2, etc and be sure to include #dubMSela!
Hi Melissa! Thanks for scheduling your tweets tonight! I know how busy everyone is... I keep wondering where those "lazy days of summer" are... #dubMSela
A1 If we give students the opportunity to be creative, they will blow us away! But that means letting go of control, at least a little bit. Kids want to create and innovate - who are we to stifle that? Instead, let's provide a place & some direction to let it flourish! #dubMSela
A1Unfortunately, I seem to be the person that uses creativity as a dessert instead of the main course. I also struggle with finding the time to allow the kids to share their products, which is the most important part of the process.#dubMSela
A1 I believe that creativity is essential in the classroom. That being said, I feel that I struggle to be "creative." I need to expand my notion of creativity and to give Ss more opportunities to be creative. #dubMSela
A1: when students are given choose, they are more creative! They blossom too. We need to have a supportive environment for risk taking and for creativity. #dubMSela
A1: students need problem solving activities in order to be creative. Personally I find that it requires trial and error...taking risks ...incorporated with lots of grit when things don’t go as planned. #dubMSela
A1: I believe that every child is an individual w/ unique experiences & backgrounds. We can learn from one another, as well as, help each other grow and be successful. BTW Jen Walter teach SS at SMS 😊 #dubMSela
This is something that is challenging to me. I always struggle to find authentic problems for Ss to solve. But I also know that Ss would probably find/identify problems if I would just give them some opportunity! #dubMSela
I couldn’t agree more!! We as educators need to keep trying too! Admin also need to keep supporting our “trying”. It takes time to perfect our craft. #dubMSela
A2 Creative experiences will be what students remember. If we can entangle learning content with creativity, we can really reach students' long term understanding. With that comes the application into new contexts, which is what they will be asked to do in their lives. #dubMSela
A2 If students take ownership in what they are creating, the learning is at a much deeper level allowing connections to previous and future learning.#dubMSela
I love this idea of "entangling" content and creativity.... it has the underpinnings of long-term processes of "untangling" learning and problems and solutions. #dubMSela
A2: Creativity is real life. We are constantly learning, adapting and problem-solving, so filling our classrooms w/ creativity is necessary to help Ss realize they CAN do anything. #dubmsela
A2: "There's power in problem solving & experimenting & taking things from questions to ideas to authentic products that you launch into the world. Something happens to students when they define themselves as makers and inventors and creators." p.2 #dubMSela

This quote just made me think about students from Parkland and their creativity in starting a movement: Authentic situation. Real world issues. Problem solving. GRIT. #dubMSela
A2: "There's power in problem solving & experimenting & taking things from questions to ideas to authentic products that you launch into the world. Something happens to students when they define themselves as makers and inventors and creators." p.2 #dubMSela
I don’t typically consider myself creative in the artistic sense, but in rdg this I’m realizing we tend to misinterpret what creativity means. I’d say I am a creative problem-solver
A3 I worry about students who struggle... do we spend too much time focusing them on learning the "basics" and allow for those who "get it" quickly to be more creative? Do we provide equal opportunity for all students to express their own, unique creativity? #dubMSela
A3 I think we have become so tied to having our voice and choice options revolve around technology that we forget there are other means to show creativity. I don’t really feel there is a digital divide in the school. .#dubMSela
Reading the book GRIT by Angela Duckworth. She talks about Talent & how it’s not always a good indicator of success. She mentions how GRIT correlates more with success & you don’t always have to be the most talented. Just need to have a wonderful work ethic & ask questions. 👍🏻
She created a GRIT scale that she used to assess the dropout rates at major institutions... such as West Point, The Green Berets, Chicago Public, etc. A very good read so far!

Hello! I am Toby Carpenter, former 8th grade science teacher at KMS, new Tech Coach. I'm excited about another #dubMSela chat. Unfortunately I am not live tonight; my responses are scheduled, but I will be reading through this chat asap! Looking forward to hearing your ideas!
A3: It is the kids who want to create & the kids who just want to get it over with. I struggle to motivate these kids. This can really be discouraging, & I find myself reflecting on what I can do better to engage them. #dubMSela
A3 I see a "creative chasm" in between my own children. My son is a complete and total consumer. My daughter is more likely to make and create. #dubMSela
A3: I see some teachers working outside of their comfort zones & other teachers working hard to get by. I love walking into a classroom where there is a ton of movement, activity, & questions being born. Not always the case. #dubMSela
I agree, but @tecarp teachers like you share so much to help other teachers navigate these "obstacles"- I think that sharing and collaboration is so important. #dubMSela
A3 In my reading intervention classroom, I really have not offered many ways for students to create. This is something I really want to change... Ss don't want to be in that class already, and I need to find ways for them to become engaged. #dubMSela
A4 Provide choices, brainstorm with Ss to generate ideas, model our own struggle with being creative, ask Ss to create (not regurgitate or just consume), establish an environment of trust/respect so Ss feel comfortable taking risks, then get out of their way! #dubMSela

A4 Just saw this quote in an article on https://t.co/NUnR1vZGQL "Structure is what creates the opportunity, and then creativity is what makes the opportunity unfold." #dubMSela
That is such an excellent question- and I do see it as the consumers vs. the makers. However I feel that the consumers can be inspired to create! #dubMSela
Again, pushing those who just want to regurgitate or be told what to do is the challenge. If it looks like the others are having fun, they may jump onboard too #dubMSela
A4: Structure comforts me 😂- the book describes it perfectly “like an outline of a song, the dimensions for an architectural wonder, & steps for a successful launch into space! That is structure I can get behind. #dubMSela
A4: I find structure can be different for different people. Many people may need help following along step by step. Others just need to know expectations & what the final goal is. Safety is priority & students need to feel comfortable. That requires some structure. #dubMSela

Cont. I am really looking forward to reading more about this framework, especially in regards to structure. I don't want to stifle creativity, but I certainly need structure with my kiddos. #dubMSela

A5 Inside the box = providing solutions within a set the restrictions or the "box;" proposing ideas that will fit within an established system; not completely open ended or "pie in the sky," but realistic and attainable, while still very AWE-inspiring and clever. #dubMSela
A5 To look at creativity as able to happen under “normal” circumstances with regular equipment, typical guidance, with some opportunity for spectacular .#dubMSela

A:5 Sometimes all you have to work with is what is inside the box. “The most creative and innovative work comes from circumstances that force a new type of thinking for solutions inside the box.” p. 25 #dubMSela
This point really resonated with me. Creating doesn't always mean that you make something from scratch... you can create new versions and improvements and repurposings. #dubMSela
A6 Having students create for the world to see (beyond the classroom) will force them to amp it up. They will feel compelled to really think, revisit, edit, polish before releasing. Conveys that their information (in essence, learning) is vital and worth sharing. #dubMSela
A4: If you truly use the workshop model there is time built in for work time (creativity). We need to think less about the time constraint we are on and more about allowing the Ss to explore. #dubMSela
A6 Knowing that something a student creates will be shared with others increases the pride and effort a person puts into their work. My students always ask, do we get to share this with the class? . #dubMSela

A6: It gives them ownership of their work- allows them to promote/ advocate for themselves as in showing others what they are capable of doing. It also allows them to see the product to the end = the results of their creation.
