Q1 As an educator, what are your core beliefs in general and about creativity? #dubMSela
  • tecarp Jun 12 @ 7:35 PM EDT
A1 If we give students the opportunity to be creative, they will blow us away! But that means letting go of control, at least a little bit. Kids want to create and innovate - who are we to stifle that? Instead, let's provide a place & some direction to let it flourish! #dubMSela
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 7:35 PM EDT
A1 All kids are capable of being creative and should be given the opportunity to express that creativity. #dubMSela
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 7:36 PM EDT
A1Unfortunately, I seem to be the person that uses creativity as a dessert instead of the main course. I also struggle with finding the time to allow the kids to share their products, which is the most important part of the process.#dubMSela
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:37 PM EDT
A1 I believe that creativity is essential in the classroom. That being said, I feel that I struggle to be "creative." I need to expand my notion of creativity and to give Ss more opportunities to be creative. #dubMSela
  • StephenDickman Jun 12 @ 7:37 PM EDT
Hello Everyone. IS at Jerome. :) #dubMSela
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:37 PM EDT
Hi Stephen! Thanks so much for joining us! Can't wait to hear your perspectives! #dubMSela
    In reply to @StephenDickman
  • melsa777 - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:37 PM EDT
A1: when students are given choose, they are more creative! They blossom too. We need to have a supportive environment for risk taking and for creativity. #dubMSela
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:38 PM EDT
I feel much the same way! #dubMSela
    In reply to @sharondechert
  • melissavoss5 Jun 12 @ 7:38 PM EDT
A1: Creativity should be fostered and not hindered. We know this and yet common practice tends to be the opposite. #dubmsela
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 7:38 PM EDT
As I read it made me feel better that although I have never felt creative, with the help of my students, creativity can still exist #dubMSela
    In reply to @jennifertwolf
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:39 PM EDT
Yes! I think that creativity also gets stifled sometimes when we worry about how to grade things. What will the rubric look like? #dubMSela
    In reply to @melissavoss5
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 7:39 PM EDT
I think this happens because we get caught up in routine and the path of least resistance at times #dubMSela
    In reply to @melissavoss5
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:39 PM EDT
I agree. More creativity and deeper thinking. #dubMSela
    In reply to @melsa777
  • StephenDickman Jun 12 @ 7:39 PM EDT
A1: students need problem solving activities in order to be creative. Personally I find that it requires trial and error...taking risks ...incorporated with lots of grit when things don’t go as planned. #dubMSela
  • JenDalgarn Jun 12 @ 7:39 PM EDT
A1: I believe that every child is an individual w/ unique experiences & backgrounds. We can learn from one another, as well as, help each other grow and be successful. BTW Jen Walter teach SS at SMS 😊 #dubMSela
  • melsa777 - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:40 PM EDT
And if it doesn’t work, don’t give up. Keep trying! #dubMSela
    In reply to @StephenDickman
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:41 PM EDT
This is something that is challenging to me. I always struggle to find authentic problems for Ss to solve. But I also know that Ss would probably find/identify problems if I would just give them some opportunity! #dubMSela
    In reply to @StephenDickman
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:42 PM EDT
Hey hey, Jen! So happy to see your smiling face in the feed! #dubMSela
    In reply to @JenDalgarn
  • melsa777 - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:42 PM EDT
I couldn’t agree more!! We as educators need to keep trying too! Admin also need to keep supporting our “trying”. It takes time to perfect our craft. #dubMSela
    In reply to @sharondechert, @StephenDickman
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:45 PM EDT
Q2 Why is creativity in the classroom important? #dubMSela
  • tecarp Jun 12 @ 7:45 PM EDT
A2 Creative experiences will be what students remember. If we can entangle learning content with creativity, we can really reach students' long term understanding. With that comes the application into new contexts, which is what they will be asked to do in their lives. #dubMSela
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:45 PM EDT
One thing I have to move beyond is the thinking that perfecting the craft = being perfect. Teaching is messy! Creativity is messy! #dubMSela
    In reply to @melsa777, @sharondechert, @StephenDickman
  • JenDalgarn Jun 12 @ 7:45 PM EDT
I agree, I don't necessarily feel like I am "creative"- but I can appreciate creativity, support it and help grow it #dubMSela
    In reply to @sharondechert, @jennifertwolf
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 7:46 PM EDT
A2 If students take ownership in what they are creating, the learning is at a much deeper level allowing connections to previous and future learning.#dubMSela
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 7:47 PM EDT
when asked to evaluate the school year, the kids always write down the fun stuff - creative, free choice projects #dubMSela
    In reply to @tecarp
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:47 PM EDT
I love this idea of "entangling" content and creativity.... it has the underpinnings of long-term processes of "untangling" learning and problems and solutions. #dubMSela
    In reply to @tecarp
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 7:48 PM EDT
A2 cont.Students will demonstrate much more GRIT if they have a role in determining their real world problem/topic.#dubMSela
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:48 PM EDT
    Great point! #dubMSela
    In reply to @sharondechert, @tecarp
  • melissavoss5 Jun 12 @ 7:49 PM EDT
A2: Creativity is real life. We are constantly learning, adapting and problem-solving, so filling our classrooms w/ creativity is necessary to help Ss realize they CAN do anything. #dubmsela
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:49 PM EDT
Can you please talk a bit more about this @StephenDickman? I am not familiar. #dubMSela
    • StephenDickman Jun 12 @ 7:47 PM EDT
I wonder if you could use a version of Angela Duckworth’s GRIT scale to use as a self assessment? https://t.co/RdY9CnjYTH
      In reply to @jennifertwolf, @melissavoss5
  • JenDalgarn Jun 12 @ 7:50 PM EDT
A2: "There's power in problem solving & experimenting & taking things from questions to ideas to authentic products that you launch into the world. Something happens to students when they define themselves as makers and inventors and creators." p.2 #dubMSela
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:50 PM EDT
"Creativity is real life." In what ways are you all creative? #dubMSela
    • melissavoss5 Jun 12 @ 7:49 PM EDT
A2: Creativity is real life. We are constantly learning, adapting and problem-solving, so filling our classrooms w/ creativity is necessary to help Ss realize they CAN do anything. #dubmsela
  • JenDalgarn Jun 12 @ 7:52 PM EDT
I want to help my kids obtain this power & confidence. I want them to be prepared for what doesn't exist yet. #dubMSela
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 7:52 PM EDT
Read Growth Mindset last school year. This GRIT scale would have been helpful.#dubMSela
    In reply to @jennifertwolf, @StephenDickman
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:53 PM EDT
This quote just made me think about students from Parkland and their creativity in starting a movement: Authentic situation. Real world issues. Problem solving. GRIT. #dubMSela

A2: "There's power in problem solving & experimenting & taking things from questions to ideas to authentic products that you launch into the world. Something happens to students when they define themselves as makers and inventors and creators." p.2 #dubMSela

    Totally agree! #dubMSela
    • melissavoss5 Jun 12 @ 7:53 PM EDT
I don’t typically consider myself creative in the artistic sense, but in rdg this I’m realizing we tend to misinterpret what creativity means. I’d say I am a creative problem-solver
      In reply to @jennifertwolf

Q3 How do you see the digital divide (or Creative Chasm) manifested in your classroom and/or your school? #dubMSela
  • tecarp Jun 12 @ 7:55 PM EDT
A3 I worry about students who struggle... do we spend too much time focusing them on learning the "basics" and allow for those who "get it" quickly to be more creative? Do we provide equal opportunity for all students to express their own, unique creativity? #dubMSela
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 7:55 PM EDT
A3 I think we have become so tied to having our voice and choice options revolve around technology that we forget there are other means to show creativity. I don’t really feel there is a digital divide in the school. .#dubMSela
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:55 PM EDT
This sounds like a great fit! Would you like to plan for the next book chat @StephenDickman? :) #dubMSela
    • StephenDickman Jun 12 @ 7:53 PM EDT
Reading the book GRIT by Angela Duckworth. She talks about Talent & how it’s not always a good indicator of success. She mentions how GRIT correlates more with success & you don’t always have to be the most talented. Just need to have a wonderful work ethic & ask questions. 👍🏻
      In reply to @jennifertwolf
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 7:56 PM EDT
Toby I hadn't thought about this with the question but couldn't agree more #dubMSela

  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:56 PM EDT
I need to check this out! #dubMSela
    • StephenDickman Jun 12 @ 7:55 PM EDT
She created a GRIT scale that she used to assess the dropout rates at major institutions... such as West Point, The Green Berets, Chicago Public, etc. A very good read so far!

Hello! I am Toby Carpenter, former 8th grade science teacher at KMS, new Tech Coach. I'm excited about another #dubMSela chat. Unfortunately I am not live tonight; my responses are scheduled, but I will be reading through this chat asap! Looking forward to hearing your ideas!
  • JenDalgarn Jun 12 @ 8:01 PM EDT
A3: It is the kids who want to create & the kids who just want to get it over with. I struggle to motivate these kids. This can really be discouraging, & I find myself reflecting on what I can do better to engage them. #dubMSela
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 8:01 PM EDT
A3 I see a "creative chasm" in between my own children. My son is a complete and total consumer. My daughter is more likely to make and create. #dubMSela
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 8:02 PM EDT
It is definitely a balancing act when it comes to actively engaging all types of kids in the classroom #dubMSela
    In reply to @JenDalgarn
  • StephenDickman Jun 12 @ 8:02 PM EDT
A3: I see some teachers working outside of their comfort zones & other teachers working hard to get by. I love walking into a classroom where there is a ton of movement, activity, & questions being born. Not always the case. #dubMSela
  • JenDalgarn Jun 12 @ 8:02 PM EDT
I agree, but @tecarp teachers like you share so much to help other teachers navigate these "obstacles"- I think that sharing and collaboration is so important. #dubMSela
    In reply to @tecarp, @tecarp
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 8:03 PM EDT
A3 In my reading intervention classroom, I really have not offered many ways for students to create. This is something I really want to change... Ss don't want to be in that class already, and I need to find ways for them to become engaged. #dubMSela
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 8:05 PM EDT
Q4 How can structure support creativity? #dubMSela
  • tecarp Jun 12 @ 8:05 PM EDT
A4 Provide choices, brainstorm with Ss to generate ideas, model our own struggle with being creative, ask Ss to create (not regurgitate or just consume), establish an environment of trust/respect so Ss feel comfortable taking risks, then get out of their way! #dubMSela
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 8:05 PM EDT
A4 Not really sure how to answer this one yet. I have not read past CH 1 and am still figuring all of this out..#dubMSela
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 8:06 PM EDT
I wonder if this could have anything to do with a narrow conception of "creativity?" How do Ss view creativity? #dubMSela
    • JenDalgarn Jun 12 @ 8:01 PM EDT
A3: It is the kids who want to create & the kids who just want to get it over with. I struggle to motivate these kids. This can really be discouraging, & I find myself reflecting on what I can do better to engage them. #dubMSela
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 8:06 PM EDT
As we read Growth mindset, a major theme was to encourage students to take risks and be accepting that we actually learn from failure #dubMSela
    In reply to @tecarp
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 8:07 PM EDT
A4 Just saw this quote in an article on https://t.co/NUnR1vZGQL "Structure is what creates the opportunity, and then creativity is what makes the opportunity unfold." #dubMSela
  • JenDalgarn Jun 12 @ 8:08 PM EDT
That is such an excellent question- and I do see it as the consumers vs. the makers. However I feel that the consumers can be inspired to create! #dubMSela
    In reply to @jennifertwolf
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 8:08 PM EDT
Again, pushing those who just want to regurgitate or be told what to do is the challenge. If it looks like the others are having fun, they may jump onboard too #dubMSela
    In reply to @tecarp
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 8:09 PM EDT
All of your answers are helping me understand the question, thank you #dubMSela
  • JenDalgarn Jun 12 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A4: Structure comforts me 😂- the book describes it perfectly “like an outline of a song, the dimensions for an architectural wonder, & steps for a successful launch into space! That is structure I can get behind. #dubMSela
  • StephenDickman Jun 12 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A4: I find structure can be different for different people. Many people may need help following along step by step. Others just need to know expectations & what the final goal is. Safety is priority & students need to feel comfortable. That requires some structure. #dubMSela
  • melissavoss5 Jun 12 @ 8:11 PM EDT
Can I steal this for my answer? Ha! I was just typing that structure helps make things happen. This is so much better!#dubMsela
  • JenDalgarn Jun 12 @ 8:12 PM EDT
Cont. I am really looking forward to reading more about this framework, especially in regards to structure. I don't want to stifle creativity, but I certainly need structure with my kiddos. #dubMSela
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 8:12 PM EDT

  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 8:15 PM EDT
Q5 What does it mean to think “inside the box”? #dubMSela
  • tecarp Jun 12 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A5 Inside the box = providing solutions within a set the restrictions or the "box;" proposing ideas that will fit within an established system; not completely open ended or "pie in the sky," but realistic and attainable, while still very AWE-inspiring and clever. #dubMSela
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 8:16 PM EDT
A5 To look at creativity as able to happen under “normal” circumstances with regular equipment, typical guidance, with some opportunity for spectacular .#dubMSela
  • jennifertwolf - Moderator Jun 12 @ 8:18 PM EDT
My answer was similar to @sharondechert but I like how she said it better than what I had! #dubMSela

A5: It means setting out TO reinvent the wheel, make a twist on something that exists #dubmsela
  • JenDalgarn Jun 12 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A:5 Sometimes all you have to work with is what is inside the box. “The most creative and innovative work comes from circumstances that force a new type of thinking for solutions inside the box.” p. 25 #dubMSela

Q6 What are the benefits of having students launch their work (as opposed to having students act as makers only)? #dubMSela
  • tecarp Jun 12 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A6 Having students create for the world to see (beyond the classroom) will force them to amp it up. They will feel compelled to really think, revisit, edit, polish before releasing. Conveys that their information (in essence, learning) is vital and worth sharing. #dubMSela
  • melsa777 - Moderator Jun 12 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A4: If you truly use the workshop model there is time built in for work time (creativity). We need to think less about the time constraint we are on and more about allowing the Ss to explore. #dubMSela
  • sharondechert Jun 12 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A6 Knowing that something a student creates will be shared with others increases the pride and effort a person puts into their work. My students always ask, do we get to share this with the class? . #dubMSela
