#WeirdEd Tonight's chat is the 200th ever so it'll be kinda naval-gazing but we'll still get to some actionable teaching stuff. Here's the blog https://t.co/F7XSyMab7x
Shawn HS social studies here in a sweltering Granite State...been in and out since either 2015 or 2016. This chat challenges my bedtime...sucks getting old! #weirded
Paul from Colorado. I discovered #WeirdEd early this year after getting hired mid-school year. I had been in other ed-chats before and they were fun and all, but discovering this chat was what @yenneam would call âfinding my tribeâ
Miss Shuganah aka Debbie. I know I didn't join in 2014. Noticed the hashtag #weirded for a while. Some time in 2015? Seems to me it was before the election.
A1 My impression was that educators I followed participated in #weirded At first I didn't realize it was a chat 'cause it wasn't #weirdedchat just #weirded I am, as you know, slow on the uptake.
A1 I was exploring Twitter as a PD source for the first time, saw the hashtag and thought, âhave I finally found my people?!â Pretty sure I did. #WeirdEd
A1: #weirded was right after another chat that I co-mod. I kept coming back because you got my Dune, Buckaroo Banzai, and other obscure references #thewormisthespice
I'm going to bed but I have to answer this one! I was getting tired of the ed chat circuit I was in because it was the same superficial topics over and over, with people giving their best Professional Educator answers. @rebelpioneer recommended #WeirdEd as a real-people chat.
A1: I like things that buck the trend, or challenge the status-quo. So anything that can upset "apple-cart education" is fine by me. Weird works! #weirded
A1 #WeirdEd
Been here about a year. So many other chats feel like boring PD. This is a chat that gives me ideas and is fun. It's an example of teaching done right
A1 And, face it, #weirded is not your run of the mill ed chat. Kind of refreshing even if I felt out of place a lot of the time being an alte kakker and all.
A1: @yenneam told me I needed to follow @TheWeirdTeacher. So I did. Then I noticed the #WeirdEd on tweets popping up so I had to try it once. I stay because it doesnât take itself seriously and the advice I get as a 1st year T isnât EduTwitter jargon.
A1: searching around for ed chats that werenât judgy or harsh. Reading your book and laughing my butt off but also taking serious notes to heart. I like the personalities on here and the mix of professional and personal. Because teaching is both. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A1 (1/2): my first Ed grad course was tech course that had an assignment to join an edchat. This is the one I joined. I keep joining b/c I believe in what the PLN says and how they say it.
A2: Itâs so much less of an echo chamber. People say what they think. Also, the community is fun, with side trips and inside jokes and whatnot. #WeirdEd
A2 In some of the other chats I've done it seems so stiff and you have to keep your pro teacher face on. But this chat just lets you relax while still growing as a teacher #weirded
#WeirdEd A1 (2/2): It feels so laid back vs many other edchats I see. The core is students first, all students learn, and how do we as educators promote learning wrapped in some really really really interesting, not matching wrappings (paper, cardboard, w/e)
I have gotten a lot of real, practical ideas from reading the side threads, because itâs a conversation and not a bunch of people rushing to answer first and Iâm great sounding platitudes to get the fake internet points. #WeirdEd
A2: It was different because the early convos I participated in were about some of the funny/ridiculous stuff that happens in teaching...yeah, teaching is a serious job in that it involves kids, etc...but some really funny stuff happens and it's okay to embrace the crazy #weirded
A2: also, #WeirdEd isnât afraid to âgo there.â So many âEduHeroesâ donât say much about teacher welfare, or serious issues like school shootings. Teacher communities need to talk those things through too, not just brag about hooks & Pinterest perfect classrooms.
Side note #weirded the first and only time Iâve met Doug in person (he is an even better person in person but donât tell him that.) someone asked if he was that pirate guy

Great point...like when you're talking to someone in person and they're not really listening to you, just listening for the pause so they can jump in w/ what they've been planning to say #weirded
A2: People are honest about who they are as people (not just as teachers) and about the real struggles and successes. It doesnât feel like anyone is putting on a show #WeirdEd

A2 When I first hooked up with educators, the other chats were really very pro forma. Yes, I know I repeat myself, too, but chats like #weirded tend to get me thinking on a deeper level.
A1 it was an assignment for my Ed Leadership class. The title just seemed right up my alley. It was & still is. #WeirdEd I keep coming back for the cake... (my 9 yr old is way into âSugar Rushâ)
I am reminded why I love #weirded so much, because itâs 100% OK to have crazy side conversations throughout the chat. We know how to be serious about a topic, without taking or making ourselves too seriously.

Nah. I call 'em as I see 'em. I don't just follow anyone. Even though I don't see you that often, I obviously value what you bring to the table. Cake aside, of course. #weirded
#WeirdEd A1 I don't really know how I got into the chat. I think. I THINK, I saw @TheWeirdTeacher tweet during Educolor.... Or, @biblio_phile somehow led me to Doug.
Why did I keep coming back? I've found other peeps that are as geeky and passionate about being geeky
A2 most topics here arenât off limits. Plus there isnât a company secretly behind the chat trying to get us to buy a product. #weirded (buy Dougâs books)
#WeirdEd It was the 1st Mission Impossible movie I've seen since MI:2, it was pretty dang good. I managed to predict a few plot points though, 'cause mainly I heard the MI movies had twists, so my brain was in overdrive.
Iâve been laying low for a little while. Lots of automated blah but not as much twitter for me. Two kids and life have slowed down my twittering days #weirded
#WeirdEd Let's get a little reflective for the next Q. If you don't have a mirror, get one.
Q3- Here's the archive of every single chat topic and blog post. What looks interesting to you? Any that were favorites? Any we should hit again? https://t.co/EP7ojt8PJV
I understand. And the kids come first. Yesterday I was invited to a chat that is at 7 PM CDT. I am still taking care of Kid O, and depending on her mood could be a challenge. #weirded
#WeirdEd Anyway, A2: it's so different because it's so laid back, but does not mean that we don't take things seriously. I also feel like my geeky ways & connecting it to Edu feels accepted. I've never been good w/ the Academic Lang of Education, so I feel like I can contribute
One of the best chats ever was the one right after Robin Williams died. We talked about mental health openly, like family. I think it helped a lot of people. #weirded

#WeirdEd it was more an encouragement as a PD tool after we did a class as an EdChat (it was cool). Most were these preachy, generic, vanilla chats. Then I found this: take the work seriously, but not yourself. Quirkiness & smartassdom highly encouraged.
Shout out to #WeirdEd for the bicentennial chat, which is probably the wrong word because it suggests this has been rolling for 200 years not 200 times, but Iâm going with it anyway. #latecookies

A3 When I first discovered @TheWeirdTeacher blog and so called " #WeirdEd " I looked at his archive and saw Star Wars, I still remember... "Star Wars AND EDUCATION"
So, yeah. That. Star Wars.
A3: I adore when we go on a topic thatâs not necessarily Ed-related, music, movies, etc. Conversely, those chats that were the âhard chatsâ are powerful too. #WeirdEd

A3: Goodness..."Phrasing" pretty much sums up teaching and my life...I've walked into so many weird/awkward moments b/c of the words that came out of my mouth #weirded
âYou canât take it with youâ may only apply to money and physical possessions. Iâm sure your fake internet points will follow you into the afterlife. #WeirdEd
#weirded A3: I lliked the one about base hits, not always the homerun. I use that throughout the year during dept meetings to help Ts through the year.
Q3 âWar on Christmasâ looks fascinating. During grad school, i taught part time at an elem school in MN, where teachers complained we had a âWinter Breakâ instead of âChristmasâ one. #WeirdEd Of my 50 music students, maybe 10 were Christian. Why the outrage then?
And I don't think media personality Katie Linendoll will mind that I borrowed her pic for educational purposes, but we had a chat about Muppets. Everyone likes Muppets, right? #WeirdEd (Good grief! The comedian is a bear!!)
I love the ones that explore the tangential things people love, and others donât necessarily get. Those stretched participants in neat ways. #WeirdEd
A3: I really do appreciate the art of mockery. There is always so much nonsense in and around "the system" that I'd go crazy if I couldn't just mock the hell out of all of it. Testing chats are great for this - i.e. Week 184 #WeirdEd
Yeah, the last bad one was from last school year...should have known better with my track record that talking about Deep Throat and Watergate would bring me to "that place" I usually end up at #weirded
A3: I really enjoyed the ones that connected to a book/movie/fandom... especially the fandoms I wasnât very familiar with. I always felt like I could still participate here even if I wasnât hip with whatever topic we were doing #WeirdEd

Interestingly, itâs usually the topics Iâm not excited about that I end up enjoying the most. Poetry with @slwindisch is the one that stands out. I got to be an ignorant ass about poetry, and my pushback was met with understanding. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd And somehow we always circle back to really relevant, surprisingly in-depth conversations about education, even if it feels tangentially connected.
#WeirdEd I've been slipping on this one. Let's make this the next Q in fact
Q4- What's a fandom/movie/book/show I haven't connected to education yet that you think I should for a chat? (check the list for what's been done https://t.co/EP7ojt8PJV)

That chat honestly did more to advance my patience and understanding of poetry than 16ish years of formal education. I still donât like it, but I am starting to âgetâ why people do. #WeirdEd

Congrats on the #WeirdEd milestone, @TheWeirdTeacher! Life is too crazy to chat, but thought I could at least send some good vibes! (Also, I really wanted a reason to use this weird GIF)
Neil Peart was 17 when it started. We had a national referendum on whether or not he could get his old age pension checks mailed to his drum kit until it ended. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A4 Fortnite (LOLOL, callback to earlier chat topic!) Naw, but anime. There's a LOT of anime out there w...interesting perspectives on education that may or may not gel well (Assassination Classroom, GT Onizuka, My Hero Academia sometimes...)
#weirded A4: various lines from gladiator run through my head on a nearly daily basis. primarily from an adult perspective - but also no death/violence.....I am not a man of the people, but I do try to be a man for the people. diamond! diamond!
A4: My phone is having trouble searching the list. But Batman: The Animated Series is coming out on Blu-Ray in October (yes, I already preordered) so... Batman Chat!?!? #WeirdEd
Many of the tropes would be cool to roll with. In fact, you could do genre based chats where the qs explore the tropes. âHow are you the âloose cannonâ cop?â #WeirdEd
I remember when @MrsStevensonSS had you convinced to do a chat from one of Patrick Swayzeâs movies, canât remember the title right now though. #WeirdEd

Unfortunately our #BacktoSchool Sale is only for creatively-minded, unconditionally-positive-regarding, ever-so-slightly-leftfield teachers with SPARK! đ
See what you think! And hit the new term running...

Would you like to stab my childhood in the front or the back? Next thing we know you'll say Johnny got robbed at the karate tournament b/c Daniel kicked him in the face #weirded
The time I spend on making questions depends how vested I am in a topic. I have to admit that there have been a few chats were I made the questions during the chat #Weirded
I would be down for SwayzeChat. ( sans Dirty Dancing or Ghost) Q3: In RoadHouse, Dalton says to âbe nice... until itâs time not to be nice.â When is that time for a teacher? #WeirdEd

Q5: I really enjoyed the questionless chats from time to time. Felt more like a real discussion, and I felt pushed into more side convos, which, as discussed, is the real heart and soul of #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A5 Encourage chat to speak more about inclusivity/considering POV of POCs/under-represented groups. I'm fully aware I tend to introduce that POV frequently, though I hope you know I don't speak for all PoCs.
I do think that its bc the chat still Majority White.
#weirded A5: the side chats? it can be challenging to follow using default interface, but that enriches the chat. time can be long? I do a couple 30 min edchats each wk, and they can be just way too quick. 7 Qs too many in an hr?
I think Doug has worked really hard to make that happen as much as possible. I think the fact that there other chats focused solely in those areas makes it tricky to engage people in a chat that isnât explicitly so. #WeirdEd
Meh, I tried...might have been before my time...I sometimes feel that...at least here in NH, that not many teachers use twitter/participate in chats #weirded
#WeirdEd Yeah, though again, I think some of the hesitance is due to the majority white participants (not accusing any1 of anything) and the valid idea that they can't speak for PoCs. Not really sure how to improve on it though.
