Rachel Klein, 6th grade ELA @MeyzeekMiddle
Pumpkin stuff cannot start until October. I don't need all the seasonally-themed pumpkin foods and products. Give me an open window and a blanket, though, and I'm in a good place!
#JCPSChat
Donna Johnson, @coral_ridge Elementary. I do love pumpkin spice stuff, for the most part. Just tried Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Creme Frappe and it is gooood.
#jcpschat
Andrew Waterhouse, @BHSBRUINS I like to start thinking of fall when it actually becomes fall on the calendar year...it's still summer people! 😂 #JCPSChat
A1. I love that the @JCPSBackpack forces me to re-examine what I teach, how I teach, and what materials I put in front of the kids. It creates a large degree of intentionality. It also gives kids an opportunity to excel in skills other than just content-related skills.
#JCPSChat
A1: I am excited to work with students creating products that reflect their true interests & abilities, WITH technology. It's great prep for post-high school years when they will need tech knowledge. #jcpschat

A1: The best thing about the @JCPSBackpack Initiative is the way it has brought our district, school, teachers, and students together for a common goal of deeper, authentic learning. #jcpschat
A1-each scholar gets to personalize their learning and schools get to be as innovative as they want to ensure scholars meet the math, reading and skills. The scholars will graduate resilient learners along with the other skills. #JCPSChat
The conversations we have are deeper. I'm forced to look at previous lessons and say "does this REALLY contribute to something bigger?" I have 5 touchstones that I know each JCPS T and S can connect to, no matter the venue.
#JCPSChat

#JCPSChat A1. @JCPSBackpack is a long term goal/program that students can connect with. The wording, the symbols, and the skills are student friendly. Individualized learning makes it different than other programs. Excite the students and the initiative will thrive.
A1: The concept of a digital portfolio in the form of the @JCPSBackpack, that follows kids no matter where they go, is super exciting. It's bigger than the writing portfolios of old and encompasses so much more! #JCPSChat
I think @JCPSBackpack makes learning more authentic and gives reason behind what and how we’re teaching as well as how students show their learning. It focuses on skills not commonly assessed, but are so important to daily life. #JCPSChat
A1: I'm excited that as a district, we are focusing on a more complete student...one who demonstrates 21st century skills. The @JCPSBackpack will challenge teachers to rethink how to incorporate these skills and create a deeper learning culture.

Finally, the portfolio isn't so heavily placed on ELA teachers to "get done". Now everyone can share the duty of helping a kid fill their backpacks with truly meaningful products.

A2. Knowing that there's probably a LOT out there yet for me to learn, maybe a... 6? I'm part of the @MeyzeekMiddle Backpack team, but I expect there's plenty left to learn. I DO feel confident showing a student how to load a product, however.
#JCPSChat
I think ALL students are going to be asked to do bigger and deeper things, and we will move beyond the belief that ELs can't do anything interesting until they've mastered English. #jcpschat#JCPSBackpack
A1: it's the tech-equity solution. accessi-brilliance. it allows for so many other ways of showcasing the student... It's a dream come true for this media arts teacher. #jcpschat
#JCPSChat I love, love, love reading these tweets! You have nailed the whys behind the #JCPSBackpack! I am also so excited about the equity this promotes. ALL kids have to experience authentic, meaningful learning to produce great artifacts. #equity
A2: Currently, I would rate myself around a 5. I feel knowledgable about the Backpack logistics, but am still working out how to help students create backpack-worthy artifacts that are meaningful to them. #jcpschat
A2: 5ish...feel like I have been part of the team re accessibility for some time so have a base knowledge but so much more room to grow and learn. I can def show progress over time by the end of the year and defend it! #JCPSChat

Sorry I'm late, 4th grade son hijacked my Chromebook to work on doc in his drive! Jennifer Buckingham from @Fairdale_Elem . I can take or leave the pumpkin craze. #JCPSChat
A2: I would rate myself at a 5. I know how to upload artifacts (for the most part) and know the various components. I feel there is a lot left I need to learn though, especially when it comes to helping students be more self-sufficient in choosing their artifacts. #JCPSChat
A2- I give myself an 8 with more to learn. Seeing @kids_inspire videos last year helped and our backpack team lead @snashky@JoMcKim4KY has done a great job with our #MiracleMiddleSchools. I even know how to log in as well. Yeah!!! Learning by doing. #JCPSChat
A2: A 7...I can help a teacher setup their backpack, and help a student upload an evidence piece. I'm also helping our school identify how we are going to facilitate senior defenses using the @JCPSBackpack.
#JCPSChat
A2 I am so looking forward to hearing about the kinds of artifacts that students are putting into their backpack. I feel as if I will learn from the teachers and students in our district So I would rate my knowledge to be four or five. I’m a learner and excited about it #JCPSChat
But there is still room for growth, specifically in terms of communication and collaboration with other teachers. Are we communicating within departments on what pieces students are uploading? #JCPSChat
Lisa Kimbrell, Barret TMS A2: a good solid 6.5. I have a good grasp of the concepts. Still working on the mechanics. Very excited about the possibilities for growth, change and revolution! #JCPSChat
10. Fan girl all the way. #jcpschat this is the new drawer in the family kitchen holding all the work from 1st grade you find as a 10th grader and 'wow' yourself over.
A1: Like when I was in music school, the defense is much like the juries I had to perform for. It gave me something to work for, and I believe it gives the scholars something to work for as well, an “end goal”, so to speak. They also have to really think about #JCPSChat
how each artifact contributes to their larger goal. “Is this really going to be a good thing to put in my backpack?”. It also encourages digital literacy and citizenship, which is very important in this digital age. #JCPSChat

A1: I love the new energy and excitement the #JCPSBackpack has brought into the district. The digital platform has the Ss eager to document their work. #JCPSChat
A3. We discussed it at @MeyzeekMiddle Open House last Thursday, both in our individual teacher presentations and on our announcements live feed featuring @PrincipalBurba talking to all parents who attended.

A2: I’d give myself an 8. I’m able to assist others with determining what items are quality, uploading items into backpacks, navigating the app, etc. #JCPSchat
A3: I’m district office so not directly to parents but we had a session at our Deeper Learning COP for SLPs and brainstormed ways to contribute and collaborate. Exciting times! And an ongoing convo #JCPSChat

#jcpschat A3. Information has been added to our student agenda, the school website, and all students have a backpack learning log they are working on in advisory class. Lastly, information is sent out in team newsletters, handbook and remind app.
A2: Playing it safe, I'll go for a 5/6. Being a 5th grade teacher, my team and I have attended as many PDs as we can. Understand the concept and skills, now need to focus on uploading documentation. #JCPSChat
A3: We're excited to share these answers with other district leaders to help ALL schools be effective in crafting effective messaging to shareholders! #JCPSChat
Drew Courtney, ESL teacher @mooremustangs and I like fall but I’ll be honest, pumpkin spiced lattes are not my favorite... (also I’m a bit late) #JCPSchat
Communicating with parents of English learners in a language they understand is essential l. The JCPS language services department is always available to help. #JCPSChat
A3: We shared information about it at Open House. We also have many bulletin boards displaying the backpack skills and evidence of students demonstrating these so parents see them on a regular basis when visiting school. #jcpschat
A2. I'm somewhere in the middle. In a learning and acquisition mode. I learn from others and in solving problems. I figure as we get used to the new norm more will share and I'll swing upward on this pendulum. 😊🤗 #JCPSChat
A3: The initiative was introduced during open house, and we are trying to ensure the backpack and the specific skills are discussed during any interactions with families. #JCPSChat
A3: We communicated with parents at open house and on the weekly email. Individually I highlighted to parents what specific assignments (PBL projects) throughout the year students can use for their @JCPSBackpack.
#JCPSChat
A3: Communicating to parents is an area I realized I needed to address. Through conversations at orientation/open house, realized many still had unanswered questions about the initiative. #JCPSChat
A1: what excites me the most about the #JCPSBackpack is that my kids will be able to demonstrate their knowledge in different ways and I love the technology integration as well!! #JCPSChat

We cannot fall into the soft bigotry of low expectation especially with our #ELLs. They’re more than capable to be exposed to rigorous tasks with adequate teacher support.
A3: we have a “counselor’s orientation” the first week of school every year to disseminate vital info to the students. Backpack was a big part of that for 8th gr this yr, so I sent the info home via Messenger to 8th gr parents. Also highlighted at open house. #JCPSChat
#JCPSChat has been delivered over 250,000 times in just 30 minutes! That's some incredible sharing! Thanks as always to @hashtracking for our analytics! #WeAreJCPS
A2: I would say that I am at a 9.9 with the @JCPSBackpack initiative. (I didn't want to say 10 because there is always more to learn!) I have looked at the Backpack app and gotten familiar with it. I just now need to get my Ss familiar as well #JCPSchat
A4: Yes, all five of my classes are in. I showed 3/5 of them how to take pictures using the Chromebooks to upload an artifact from their SS class. It's a work in progress. #JCPSChat
A4: @Fairdale_Elem has 100% of students logged into their backpacks! 5th graders helped some in younger grades, they loved the opportunity to be tech teachers! Goal is to have an artifact by end of the month. #JCPSChat
A3: Communicating to parents is an area I realized I needed to address. Through conversations at orientation/open house, realized many still had unanswered questions about the initiative. #JCPSChat
And, several have loaded a document. @kmastronicola1 made a lovely backpack reflection doc that allows students to remember what they're putting in the backpack years later during a defense.
#JCPSChat
A3: We are using social media, videos and other medias to get the information about @JCPSBackpack to parents as well as students. Each academy has also set up advisory groups with students to help them upload and manage their backpacks! #JCPSChat
A4: Last week I had all of my classes log into their backpacks. We are creating a "Big Bang Waterfall" that I overheard some students say they would upload this week. Stay tuned!
#JCPSChat
A4: We are currently in the process of getting all students logged on. We haven't uploaded artifacts yet as our school wants to be on the same page about what constitutes something that is "backpack worthy." #jcpschat
A4: Sadly no because I see my students once a week. However, we have some awesome projects in the works that will be ready to be added in a few months if students choose for them to be. #studentchoice#JCPSchat

#JCPSChat We are looking for great #JCPSBackpack artifacts to share across the district. Trying to decide what might work? Use the “Backpack-worthy artifacts” criteria and PLEASE send artifacts my way or tweet using #JCPSBackpack!
Need to do some vocab work with students around skills, so they truly understand what each one means and looks like, especially my ELLs. Thinking of having Ss collaborate to create google slides of each success skill. #JCPSChat
A4- all schools are logging them in and half have uploaded artifacts with their scholars. This has been a process that’s been a great learning experience or everyone involved at the schools. #JCPSChat

A5: We were told that all students needed to log in to their backpack and create a folder. We created a folder in Google Drive, but not in the actual backpack as we didn't see a way to do this. Was a folder in Drive the expectation? #jcpschat
A5: @JCPS_JackBosley already came out to a faculty meeting! Couldn't believe I didn't think of the copy option for Ss e-mail!
Shared with Ss next day and they were grateful for the tip!
#JCPSChat
2/2 most importantly we’ve put a team of teachers *cough* like @teach_the_past to try and make coherence of the work and get our staff to understanding and buy in. Work in progress but we’re making solid progress. It will be worth it. #jcpschat
A5: comment not ?; my students are trying to stress over the defense. Could be 8th gr drama (no!!!), but it’s a recurring theme. We’re addressing it as their moment to shine. Just curious if anyone else has seen/heard similar #JCPSChat
Invite students (far and wide across @JCPSKY) to a #JCPSChat to ask their questions and have them answered by us AND other students! Maybe we should start curating possible questions from 5th, 8th, and 12th graders.

A6: Ways that special area teachers can contribute to the Backpack. Ways to collaborate with classroom teachers on projects, project examples, etc I have ideas I’d like to share. #JCPSchat

A6: you all know this shortcut right - https://t.co/jJIUVQB18q If you have Chromebooks you can push that out to open in Chrome or add it as a favorite #jcpschat
A6: Listening to some other teachers, I think more videos on senior defenses would be ideal. I know @kids_inspire has already done a tremendous job with the videos. Maybe more support on how to facilitate them effectively?
#JCPSChat
Great idea! My high anxiety kids are pretty amped. I’m trying to connect w/them every couple of days to remind them it’s like shopping for your favorite shoes: you go in knowing exactly how much they cost, you’ve saved up to make it happen, and then you strut out! 👠👡👢#JCPSChat

@jcpsforward Q6: As a special area teacher, I think we need to share ideas on how we are supporting the backpack in our classrooms and how best to do this without easy access to devices. #JCPSChat
A5 Perhaps highlight teachers and students who are designing and creating quality work as well as a discussion of the joys and challenges involved. #JCPSChat
We started a YouTube Channel to showcase opportunities to respond for our most unique students. Videos no longer than a commercial to showcase ways to include all students & others could easily replicate. #JCPSchat
A7: Currently, my students are working on a Dot Day-themed project with a brainstorming/rough draft section, script, and 30-90 second @Flipgrid video. This will serve as evidence they are Effective Communicators. #jcpschat

It would be great to have kids "star" in these videos... but I bet you've already thought of that. Wait, if they write, produce, shoot, and edit these, I bet they could go in their backpacks. :-) #jcpschat

A7. My students communicated effectively when they introduced themselves to me in a choice of formats- letter, comic strip, artistic response, a Q and A interview, or other. We uploaded these into our @JCPSBackpack#backpack#JCPSChat
A7: I know some of our Adv Art kids are loving the format for pics of their artwork. Math kids are loading in “team tests”, and Soc St just loaded in Culture Maps. #JCPSChat
