Damian Hinds called for new nationwide network of 'elite' grammar schools. Expect more in the year ahead - many more ... https://t.co/i65V4b6Stn#SLTchat#ukedchat
#ukedchat A1: Recruitment still seen as meaningful & impactful career - But retention is an issue. Psychological fatigue & mental health should not be a caveat to providing effective education & being positive influences. Can the latter even be fully achieved due to the former?
A1. I have heard a couple of stories recently from my colleagues in the UK who have left the profession. Workload, lack of trust and unrealistic pressure were cited as reasons. #UKEdChat
A1 Spending over a billion pounds in the next two years on recruitment and training of teachers is all well and good but there needs to be investment and support in retaining teachers especially those who are relatively new. #UKEdChat
A1. Need to look at wellbeing. Teacher wellbeing is vital BUT need to look at pupil wellbeing, links to attainment and how approaching Teacher, pupil AND family wellbeing NEED to be a joint strategy. Better hoksitic wellbeing. Bettet attainment. Better retention #ukedchat
#ukedchat A2: That committed teachers will keep on applying themselves despite heavy workloads, but hopefully Ed-Secs will acknowledge & act upon realisation that the 'conveyor belt' is not endless. Can facilitation of 'smarter', not 'harder' be established?
We had a careers talk at uni and the lady from ITT said to us “don’t believe the adverts. You won’t get paid that much. You won’t get a company car or fancy perks like some of these grad schemes offer but you will be making a difference & that’s something v special”
A2. That it is unsustainable. Teacher are so passiinate about giving the best they will literally burn themselves out. Too many teachers are pushed too hard and the sector is under more scrutiny than any other profession. #ukedchat

A1: I wrote this thread about my dreams of training to become a teacher, the bloody hard work & time it took to get to the point where I could & then the realisation that the workload/pressure was too much for me & my family to bear.
#ukedchat
A2 Workload can vary from school to school depending on demands from leadership and circumstances of a school. Strategies for tackling this would be helpful. #UKEdChat

#ukedchat A3: That, alone, they are not a thorough or accurate indication of pupil understanding. An exam focus 'one-size-fits-all' approach is antiquated, not relevant to today's learners or tomorrow's skill set. They have their place, but not at the head of the assessment house
A2. TAs are vital part of school and need to be seen as such. Better pay and more professional approach to workforce standard. They are invaluable and need to be seen as such #ukedchat
In reply to
@ukedchat, @MrJHodgkins, @teacherchalky1
A3. That they have a place but a place only. Not to be what defines a 10yr old. Not for secondary schools to wrote them off with and definattley not to stress them. Test knowledge not time management for starters! #ukedchat
We trust in teacher assessment. We have ongoing CPD in teacher assessment. We have a rigour cross-Island moderation process. We have a model that takes account of the entire journey of learning not a memory test on a certain day. #UKEdChat
A1: you can recruit as many teachers as you like...but if those like me are walking away (after 10+ years) the reasons need to be addressed. I would happily go back...but TO TEACH. ;-)
#UKedchat
A4. Far tr3nds don't have impact. Properly consult schools as to where funding is needed, used and going. Bring in external stakeholders. CAMHS. Ask them what impact funds ins chill would have. Joint funding? Joint working protocols? #UKEdChat

Research has shown teacher assessment is accurate and reliable. We work with federated schools and cluster schools to help moderate and regulate our assessing too. Ownership of assessment will improve accountability and knowledge #ukedchat
A3 Comparing schools in league tables based on SATs results in simplistic terms (how many chn are ARE in reading, writing and maths) will not show the progress made by chn especially those who start school with limited language. It's not helpful. #UKEdChat
#ukedchat A5: That the level of wellbeing is dangerously teetering on the edge of practitioners' long-term health. With mindfulness & pupil wellbeing becoming part of many school approaches, awareness of staff wellbeing is equally vital - yet still neglected.
But where and why. They need to find out so they can proper strategically do something about it. Too much anecdotal stuff. Time to do something....and publish it this time! #ukedchat

#UKEdChat A2 - CUT IT. NOW. STOP CUTTING OUR MONEY AND START CUTTING WORKLOAD. Too much meaningless paperwork, data and marking that doesn't impact at all.
In reply to
@ukedchat, @MrJHodgkins, @teacherchalky1
A5. It can be addressed. There are great services to engage in finding out the whys etc. Have external verification of wellbeing. Set up external supervision as well as supervision in line with all other CYP service providers #ukedchat

A4 Expecting standards to continue rising when budgets are (in real terms)being cut is optimistic. One of the greatest investments a society can make is to invest in education. Access to and funding for SEN services and mental health is vital #UKEdChat

That staff wellbeing and student wellbeing are fundamentally interrelated, that both significantly impact student outcomes and that both can be targeted by a whole school resilience building approach #ukedchat A5
#ukedchat A6: That they are yet to be decided - so please don't promote pigeon-holing restrictions on pupil creativity. Time to celebrate diversity of mind: Not another brick in the wall.
The new education secretary would benefit from hooking up with some of the fabulous minds behind Headstart campaign which (through co-production with YP) builds resilience, mental and emotional health of whole communities. Schools play vital part #ukedchat#Headstartlearning
A5 : That staff wellbeing is very low on SLT agenda - too much pressure to meet often imaginary Ofsted requirements - carrying out fake ofsted's etc - teachers are becoming burnt out! #UKEdchat
A6. The future that faces today’s children is more unpredictable than ever before. Learning isn’t all content. It’s process. Meta-cognition. Learning to be a good learner. Our schools need to reflect this. #UKEdChat#learningpower@beckycarlzon

If you have staff that are struggling under the pressure, they can’t perform their best and our young people don’t get the deal they deserve! #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A6 - young people care about Politics (59% turnout in 2017, up 10% on 2015) yet statutory requirements do not reflect this. They need to be informed!! @citizenship

We don't talk about 'Every Child Matters' now. But the truth is they do, more than ever. Let's treat kids as humans rather than commodities. #A6#ukedchat@DamianHinds
A6 The futures of young people require a good all round education including a broad and balanced curriculum. They need to be taught to think, to develop empathy and resilience. #UKEdChat

A6: That we don't need to follow the 'new' thing on the block (e.g singapore maths) in order for our chn to compete with the world - we need chn who have their own minds and ideas - not just following orders! #ukedchat
#ukedchat A6: That young people need creative subjects too. There’s so much emphasis on maths & English, kids need music,drama, art, philosophy, outdoor learning, cooking too

A6 -we can support their futures by including them in decisions about their future. As the young people at #HeadStartLearning conference said today “when you value our ideas, give us a chance 2make a difference, trust&respect us, we are passionate about making change” #ukedchat

A7: Leaders need to stop beating people with the OFSTED stick (AKA a way to make people do more for nothing). Accountability is very strange - why judge teachers on what 30 children decide to do in a couple of hours unsupervised? #ukedchat

A7 Last inspection was led by an inspector who had experience of schools similar to ours. It's important to understand the context of a school and to appreciate how children are being prepared for the future through spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. #UKEdChat

A7. Inspections should be supportive not data dependant. Data in junior schools is so skewed by infants that it becomes irrelevant as does other situations. Don''t need external judgement. Judge school privately and support. Aim is best education for all #ukedchat

#ukedchat that’s so true and as teachers we are sometimes told to concentrate on those who CAN get there. Those who are way out of reach of the pinnacle of expected, apparently matter less
In reply to
@Mr_RichTea, @UKEdSch, @ukedchat, @DamianHinds
Rather than concentrating solely on recruitment, ensuring that those in the profession are happy & looked after is important as a happy workforce should promote recruitment & retention rates. Happy teachers = happy students = motivated grads = happy trainees.

Q7 that inspections and accountability are scaring many teachers and leaders from having the conviction to stand in what they know to be best for the kids! #ukedchat
A2 part 2: Secondly, accountability is even stranger when you remember it’s based on data from when they were 4. Are you the same as you were 12 years ago? No. So why suggest progress is linear and can be predetermined?#ukedchat
In reply to
@ukedchat, @UKEdNow, @MrJHodgkins, @teacherchalky1, @keran77, @MissSims4, @Edu_Wellbeing, @MrPatelsAwesome
To be fair, I think Ofsted are listening to schools more. HTs are still obsessed with Ofsted grades though. Stress cascades down through staff to children. Is there too much accountability? #a7#ukedchat
The inspection system needs reform through meaningful consultation with young people and school staff. Currently it is a major source of stress for leadership and whilst sometimes being correlated with school improvement, has multiple unintended consequences A7 #ukedchat

#ukedchat A7: that good teaching takes many different forms. There’s not just one way to teach well. A teacher who doesn’t shine on inspection day can still be a great teacher!
A7 #UKedchat Inspections and accountability are not the same thing! Rethink the framework that refers to teaching and learning so schools stop using it as the basis for lesson observations. Encourage a review of T&L over time

#UKEdChat A8: It's a diverse & inquisitive animal. Cultural nuance means that long-standing structure of bias in background is unacceptable. Students are provided a disservice if (a) Curriculum is not broad enough (b) Not all students are able to access/empathise with content.
A8 Education for children needs to provide a broad curriculum beyond reading, writing and maths (I say that as a maths subject leader!) Chn can be engaged in learning and become resilient when given the opportunity to do so. #UKEdChat
