Oh look, it's 8PM! And it's Thursday! It must be time for - LET'S DO THIS!
Our chat is starting! Format: Q1/A1. Be sure to include - Feel free to share articles, images, examples, Bitmojis, & GIFs
Tonight's is all about Creating Authentic Learning Experiences for our students. The hows, the whys, the results... all of it.
Let's get started. Pls share your name, where you're from, and your favorite classroom catastrophe
teresa moore, lexington, ky. backing over a trash can in my room.
Jamie, Hardin County, putting buckets of water in the makerspace...
Hi Teresa! The cartoon version in my head is very funny...
Jeremy - Bardstown Middle School - Integer Football during student teaching
James - Goshen - I'm pretty sure I've blocked out that failed music lesson
I've seen the video. it wasn't a huge catastrophe...
I thought that was your Innovator project...
Brandy, Hardin Co. I accidentally told Kinders "pot smoke won't hurt you" but I wasn't referring to drugs!
Hi Brandy! I made a similar statement in a GHangout yesterday. won't let it go...
Leanna from Lexington- worked with ads to build scale model of a pyramid- wouldn't fit through the class door
Hi!. Brooke. Hardin Co! A lesson where all Ss could edit a doc, w/o giving expectations first...then turning back on the board.
Dee here- Frankfort, KY-. Pony beads bounce- especially 1000s of them spilled out of a big candy jar!
WoW!! That could have been really dangerous.
That is my biggest fear with boxes of sorted LEGOs
been there, done that. I couldn't turn the editing off fast enough...
I learned that the hard way too. I let them use nicknames for a polleverywhere and kaHoot...
I was referring to the steam coming off a pot of water we were boiling
Kids not ads (not sure where that came from)
even after explaining I still got a "your mama" as a Kahoot name last week...
Q1: How do you define "authentic learning"?
I jumped in today with Joe Momma. They all knew who it was!
let's be honest though, I'm 89% sure at appy hour Quizizz demo I think I typed the same.
A1: student initiated and student led
Authentic learning is when kids find relevancy in what they are learning. Real world application.
we tested a student retake form and our principal's name was IP Freely
A1: learning to understand. Real world situations. Showing students where to look, not what to look for. https://t.co/JiwkEgok68
Q1: How do you define "authentic learning"?
interesting... I think that's an upcoming question ;)
That was his second choice. The first was too crazy...however I cannot remember it.
OK, Q1 part b: what do we consider "real world" - lots of possible interpretations
A1: Learning that starts with student questions is one kind of .
Hello Zelia from Toronto, CDN 20yrs ago piloting computer/internet n class typed 'autumn', didn't consider filters:not PG
A1: Authentic learning is real world -
not learning for a test... Learning with beginning in the end...
A1: Teacher as guide, consider Ss interests & talents 2 lead & discover
# Q1 part b. "Real World" is typically related to functioning in everyday situations.
ah! so how do we get those student questions? how do we find out what "really" matters to them?
A1: The cool stuff that makes students go... "Oooohhhh, that's why we learned that!"
Hi Zeila! Thanks for joining us! I can't imagine the results from that search...
Q1b- Ex. Using classroom $ to buy stuff vs a page full of $ word problems
A1-B. Real world: meaningful to student; can apply-studying area/perimeter using space planning to redesign classroom
Oh, wow! Does Pokémon count? How about games that build infrastructure? Is storytelling real? https://t.co/RcfnMM6dhl
OK, Q1 part b: what do we consider "real world" - lots of possible interpretations
funny you should mention that... just what my 7th grades are doing next week ;)
Let me tell you I yanked the cords 2 unplug devices &straight 2 an improvised discussion on how 2 deal w/ the unexpected
We really could teach large swaths of material by just asking good questions to spark student questions!
Q1b: using video games, technology, incorporating their surroundings https://t.co/vSbLaMm7QA
OK, Q1 part b: what do we consider "real world" - lots of possible interpretations
I did this with my 6th grade students- my sister came in to speak (she is an interior designer)- you could use Sketchup
Since we keep mentioning students... Q2: What input do students have (or should have) in crafting authentic learning experiences?
we're going to start with Google Drawings for 2D but Sketchup is definitely a good idea!
A1.Real world learning;Engaging problems that require thinking skills!
I worked with Ts to have students design games in Scratch based on content standards- kids loved it
That lightbulb moment! https://t.co/Hw9FJAhmwO
A1: The cool stuff that makes students go... "Oooohhhh, that's why we learned that!"
part of my social entrepreneurship project: research, cr8n a product, market, budget & celebrate successes
Authentic learning- Students have the desire to continue to learn beyond the classroom: no ceiling to the learning
A2: find out their interests... Through writing, conversations...
Students input into their learning is major. A technique QFT(question formulation technique) is a great way to help them
I keep forgetting about drawings- great plan!
If they are NOT insterested... Learning anything will be challenging.
such is the struggle of many classrooms
A2 Ideally the lesson is set up to offer many ways to learn; the student would choose the most meaningful path.
That's a great question that could get lots of students thinking. Gotta try it soon! https://t.co/iepyUKltzX
Thinking...provide materials (conductive/insulating 'stuff') and ask Ss 'How could u design and build something to make life btr?'
Students should have choice- to find their passion; to want to understand something deeply you need to love it
We used Google Sketchup awhile back to create virtual museums
Great chat everyone! Q3 is up in 1 minute!
Q3: What challenges do teachers face in implementing authentic learning?
A2: Ss input valuable & Ss value learning when involved. Back2school questionnaire what they want 2get out of the school yr
We need to engage them with questions so thought-provoking that they are still thinking about it weeks later
A3:push back from others, importance of test data, lack of funds
A3: Connecting the standards/assessment to engaging real world experiences in a timely fashion- the struggle of constraints
A3: Predetermined pacing/curriculum guides. 😕
test data is important but shouldn't we be able to design tasks that incorporate the standards?
Stakeholders don't understand it
A3: Implementation: time 2 reenvision lesson/unit. Making learning experiences unique each year based on Ss cohort strengths, needs
I am just going to put this out there... How authentic are tests?
Q3: funds (when necessary), side stares, no to little support. https://t.co/eiB7oA0AL9
Q3: What challenges do teachers face in implementing authentic learning?
Q3/A3 Challenges: District Guidelines,Student Ability Levels,Availability of Materials, Time Constraints,Ss backgrds
time... I think that's really the biggest issue. Our time is SO stretched... tough problem
I'm hearing lots of talk about guidelines, district constraints... how do we change or modify those blocks?
especially since we started using - "Boss battle? What's a Boss battle?"
great question! Are we assessing students in the context for which knowledge/skills are used in the real world?
It depends on the environment, the test, and the students; use the data in conjunction with other factors https://t.co/no3je8qGmh
I am just going to put this out there... How authentic are tests?
OMG CAN I JUST PASTE THIS TWEET ON THE DOOR OF EVERY SCHOOL?!?!?!?!!? https://t.co/ek8vt7C7AD
I am just going to put this out there... How authentic are tests?
sneaking is not allowed in my neighborhood...
A3: Time not enough time to prepare for implement with requirements that are in place.
A3: I mean, don't get me wrong, I can teach a kid how to take a test. Easy. But that's not what I want to do. I want to inspire
Stagnant and stifling ... but system has to change especially during a provincial testing year
Right?!? How can spelling tests, multiplication quizzes, and reading logs be mad authentic? https://t.co/ogJfZ74xGs
great question! Are we assessing students in the context for which knowledge/skills are used in the real world?
I feel you. Tired is not the right word..
When Ss demonstrated understanding of standards through making a digital game- they worked beyond an A
"They worked BEYOND an A" - why aren't people writing education books about THAT? https://t.co/p3TvPjynGv
When Ss demonstrated understanding of standards through making a digital game- they worked beyond an A
Q4: How have you integrated authentic learning experiences into your classroom?
A4: providing opportunities for Ss 2 b content creators not just consumers & let Ss showcase beyond the classroom
A4: Game design challenges are great- engaging; real audience and you can use them across content areas
Well, it's nearing that time again. Almost time to put a lid on this edition of
