My name is Jack Dingus, DC at Crooked Oak HS in Oklahoma City OK! Former OL Coach and Co Host and Co Founder of the Monday Night #hogfbchat Today is my birthday.
Pads under pads. 1 hand under armpit and other hand on the chest plate. Seen where kids are told to put their head across the body but just seems like a good way to get a stinger or concussion. #hogfbchat
A1: Head across, shoulder pads contacting rib cage, front hand on breast plate, back hand on hip, pull breat plate and push hip to eliminate spin off. #Hogfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachDingus: Q1: What are your helmet/shoulder coaching points on a solo down block? Where are you aiming and what are you making contact with?
#HogFBChat
Hat across body to BS #, PS hand to PS ribs and BS hand to gut. Considered moving to putting PS hand on hip but we never really got it rolling. #hogfbchat
A1 I’m not a ‘gap scheme guy’ but I teach helmet across the bow and a strong up field hand on the back of the DL. We did a lot more down blocking this year than I was used to and it was effective. #hogfbchat
A1 we want shoulder pads at hip level of defender with head across want outside arm locked out on defenders upfield shoulder so can’t spin back across #hogfbchat
A1: We try to get our nose to the near hip as our aiming point. Inside had goes to breast plate & outside hand to short ribs. Want to finish with ear on near number. This changes is we see spinners on film. #hogfbchat
A1: I tell them to try and get their head cross face but that’s only because I want them to aim there and actually hit face mask to “v” of the neck with heavy hand to aim for the hip. Down block to the left, right hand on hip. #Hogfbchat
A1) Really emphasize the 3 points of contact (both hands, and helmet screws). Strong playside hand, to prevent getting beat of the top of the block #Hogfbchat
A1: Cage to near number inside hand to sternum, outside hand to side. #1 Goal is to cut-off penetration. Work hips upfield vs. spin or arm-over. #hogfbchat
A1. I teach it like a zone block. Near shoulder to near shoulder of the defender. Head always stays out of the block. If it’s a reach situation I want to get far shoulder to far shoulder. I like the rip and run for that. #HogFBChat
A1: We put the screws of our helmet right on the play side number of the defender...head up of course. I want our face mask in our work. Our near hand goes to the far number and our backside hand goes on the hip to help against spin out. #hogfbchat
A1: Head across the bow, one hand one the chest plate/stomach area, other hand on the hip making the sandwich. Making contact w shoulder. Aiming at the path of your 45 degree step. #Hogfbchat
We did not run any true 1 on 1 pin blocks. All blocks were double team / scrape to second level blocks. Focused on a hard hip to hip overlap Snow plow approach. No focus on helmet or shoulder pad placement. Focus was overlapping and connecting with our snowplow partner #hogfbchat
A1: drive off outside foot, catch with inside splitting the DT’s crotch. Eyes looking at the nape of the neck. Continue to drive on that angle. Contact with DT’s outside shoulder/side. #hogfbchat
Aiming point:
A.) Eyes on v of the neck vs. read and react defender.
B.) Eyes on armpit vs. Attack the Gap defender. *Backside hand punch rib cage. Slide head across chest, get very movement with PS knee high. #hogfbchat
Well, relatively speaking.... I should say coaching points for the strike itself are the same. Ideally we get their momentum shifted onto one leg and run through #HogFBChat
Obviously first step is the most important initial move, followed by inside hand aiming for outside shoulder. Face mask if pounded into he numbers of the defender followed by rolling the hips and pounding the feet!! #hogfbchat
A1- Aiming point:
A.) Eyes on v of the neck vs. read and react defender.
B.) Eyes on armpit vs. Attack the Gap defender. *Backside hand punch rib cage. Slide head across chest, get very movement with PS knee high. #hogfbchat
A1: Trying to get the shoulder/head in front in hopes of not getting any penetration. I like the near hand in the chest plate and far hand coming in with a flipper. Use the flippers with our combos so kids get comfortable with it. #hogfbchat
A1. Hands and legs first and in position before the head to ensure they don't lead with helmet (greater chance of neck/head injury). Shoulders shouldn't create lane for dline #hogfbchat
A1 45° step where you strike right through the armpit, I’m a firm believer in striking with the hands first instead of the shoulder. Then run the feet. #Hogfbchat
A1: Eyes on the sternum one hand on the OS number and other hand on near shoulder/armpit. We tell our guys we want to cut the DL off and widen the hole on the down block. Being able to stay on the block and turn our man out of the hole is important. #hogfbchat
A1: simplicity is key for us. We always teach head placement to the play call. Read/react DL we coach "near shoulder to near shoulder" for penetrating DL, we teach "far shoulder to near shoulder" to get a bucket step #Hogfbchat
A1: Starts w/Feet - hard/fast Fire-Lead step to get on defender's hip (aiming pt) w/Shoulder on the hip 2nd step. I tell my guys they have .5 secs to get their to avoid penetration. Then maintain wide base driving DT down LoS #hogfbchat
A1 I teach it to vary based upon how far away the ball is and the defenders ability/responsibility. If the ball is wide and/or he’s not an upfield player; I’d want my inside shoulder on his hip/ribs; Inside hand clubbing his hip joint and outside hand grabbing cloth #hogfbchat
A1 cont: I think the worst thing is to get too far across the block on your aiming point. Puts the blocker off balance and allows the DL to play back off the block. #hogfbchat
A1: Head in front to cutoff Penetration we go for an elbow grab to push thru to a flipper (not always successful) Noncontact Arm we use a punch to the sternum! (again to cut off penetration) #hogfbchat
Really, we try to not even use the word "head" a whole lot. Preach the ever loving piss out of hand placement and footwork. Obviously the head will get involved but if we can keep it out of the lexicon it might help. Just how things are these days. #hogfbchat
A1 For upfield players the opposite is true. Outside shoulder on hip; inside hand grabbing cloth and outside hand striking the hip joint as forcibly as possible #hogfbchat
AP for our screws is the V of the Neck. Violent i/s hand to the sternum, violent o/s hand to the outside arm. Must keep that o/s hand off the defender’s back to avoid holding. On the finish we expect the escape & work vertical fighting our screws thru the original AP #hogfbchat
A1: Aiming point nearside of the V of he neck. Focus is more on the countering of the DL’s spin back towards the ball. Easily a bi-weekly drill. #hogfbchat
A1 step with inside foot to near hip. Make contact with playside shoulder. Playside hand has to be on the shoulder to prevent DL escaping across the face. Other hand fits on the chest of the dlineman. #hogfbchat
A1: we always start by teaching flat 1st step to stop an aggressive DL. If necessary, change first step to block DL trying to fight over top a downblock. Body position and feet on contact make/break block. #hogfbchat
A1 Head across the body. Outside hand on arm pit/elbow/ribcage. Inside hand aiming point is opposite shoulder of dl. Use tons middle of dl chest but found out if we aim for the shoulder they are more likely to get the hand where it should be #Hogfbchat
If we see a lot of this, we teach a lateral T-step and then vertical through the near hip. I think it takes a different technique than hard chargers do #hogfbchat
A1: step with near foot near hand on chest, trail hand on hip. Drive into pile and get/keep DL off balance. Have to make sure they don’t feel pressure and spin back out of the block into the play. We’ve had some problems with that. #hogfbchat
My name is Jack Dingus, DC at Crooked Oak HS in Oklahoma City OK! Former OL Coach and Co Host and Co Founder of the Monday Night #hogfbchat Today is my birthday.
A1 Cont: I’ve never liked teaching head in front or head behind because it doesn’t give you much room for error. I like going right through defender so it gives room for error on both sides if needed. #Hogfbchat
A2: 6 inch 45 degree angle step. 2nd step follow. Whole foot in the ground, 6inch step. Not much different than a straight up block or a Backside cutoff. #hogfbchat
A2: We coach it as if they’re on a protractor and they’re stepping at a 45 degree angle. Obviously that can change on speed of defender. Wider at fast guys, sharper at slower guys #Hogfbchat
Simplest possible for me...stwp on his Lakeside foot. We had more trouble with guys crossing face when we used to step down to split the crotch #Hogfbchat
A1. I’m trying to figure out a better way to verbalize “nose across mid point.” Any teaching that involves head placement could be dangerous. Tread lightly. #hogfbchat
A2. First step to DL midline, second step “closes the gate” on the block. Low hips, contact, run feet and roll hips and finish, that equals.... #hogfbchat
A1: cont. Hands inside and punching up on the rise (after 3 to 4 steps). Gettem moving w/initial leverage then rise controlling them w/hands while feet are wide, chopping. I teach old-school WingT BUT mix in new Zone concepts to control D #hogfbchat
A2: drive off of outside foot splitting the DL with inside foot. Short choppy steps. Drive your man into the ground and lay spread eagle on top of him. Rinse and repeat #Hogfbchat
A2 1st step splits the DLs crotch. If its a real aggressive DL will step flat. Focusing on not allowing penetration. Hat and and hands will stop the DL from spinning out. #hogfbchat
Key the knee of target. Your Outside foot as your drive. Inside as your catch. Inside elbow in with thumb rotated out and striking center / inside number. Attempting to single hand strike to help Asst on staying square once pressure to pressure happens. #hogfbchat
A2: step must beat angle that Defender is likely to take...try to rep worst case scenario for our guys...they must be prepared for the most difficult look possible #hogfbchat
A2: first step: near foot to near foot(near to near) second step in ground ASAP to square hips to defender, run feet, and finish the block 🥞 #Hogfbchat
A2. Angle depends on dl technique but foot work is same. Almost like a pull step inside foot flat or 45 pick it up put it down. Outside foot drive big toe into the ground and piviot. Then it's stay square to the sideline and drive em down. #Hogfbchat
Hip explosion and working that upfield hip was big time for us this season. Good to see a major coaching point transition to field. Thankfully I had a center @Cellus0 that always did a jam up job. #hogfbchat
A1: head across near shoulder, FS hand on OS number, BS hand in near ribs. Use drop/width zone footwork, and zone principle to create lateral displacement movement #hogfbchat
#Hogfbchat A2: we teach a 45 degree 6 inch down step towards the defender. That then puts you on the track. Keep running the track through the defender.
A2: Bird dog foot to near number, 2nd step same direction crotch to hip. Do not like lateral lead because so many teams vs. us(Spread Wing-T) teach a fast spin/arm-over. This technique allows me to be perpendicular vs. defender with butt to play. #hogfbchat
A2: the first step has to be right, first two steps are most important parts of the progression. First step depends on the alignment of the defender, but it’s typically a 45 angle step to a flat step, gotta teach both and know when to use them. #ToolBox#hogfbchat
A2. Again it’s basically a zone block step hard with the inside foot putting force through the ground with the outside foot. By the second step our belt buckle is cutting the defender in half and then we drive on our angle. #HogFbChat
A2: First to the midline of DL following your eyes. Second to cut off secondary move underneath from the DL. In addition bring a violent punch to get a good deal block on the DL. #hogfbchat
A2 continued: Seeing all the pancakes is awesome! I got helmet sticker for my guys to reward for each pancake. Then have the Boss Hawg sledgehammer to guy with most 🥞 #Hogfbchat
A2: Typically use a bucket step. Opens our hips and gets feet in a good position to apply leverage. Really focus on what will get us success in our hips. Best position to work through the defender. #hogfbchat
A1+ I come to the conclusion that different guys need some options in down blocking footwork actually teach a floater first step and a more agressive 1st. step to put in the layer tool box and let them in game decide vs opponent. #hogfbchat
Q2 solo down block we teach opening the hips while gaining ground depending on the tech. The further away the more he has to open up without changing OL assignments. #hogfbchat
Q2: drive off outside foot, catch with inside foot aimed at splitting the crotch. Continue to pound the ground on the insteps through that angle. @OLineWorld65 = drive/catch
#hogfbchat
Q2 first step always flat second step can adjust to make sure of contact along with third! Once there 1000 steps a second work your feet #hogfbchat 1st step important Part of cutting off penetration
A2: I have gone to more of a lateral step then second step coming at 45 degrees because I had a tackle this year who had trouble with the 45 step and opening to wide giving up space
Q2: 1st 2 steps MUST BE Fast and Perfect. IF Defender's a Gap Shooter, 1st step is flat (reach towards). If Big body - Fire-Lead rt @ him. The 1st step is KEY as it opens blocker's hips - gets him on his 45. 2nd step puts shoulder on hip. Fast Fast FAST #hogfbchat
A2: Most important thing I’ve ever learned is losing the opposite “cheek” to ensure a + 1st step. Most common way to lose a down block is a - step. Then, silverback position and stomping feet through defender. Learned from @CoachOBYOTES#hogfbchat
A2 drive off outside foot working at a 45 degree angle. We post to get our fist two steps in the ground and bring physical force to create movement. #hogfbchat
When it’s a true down block I feel like shoulder contact stops penetration which is the worst thing an OL can allow, someone crossing his face inside #hogfbchat
A2: Drive off of outside foot and step with inside foot. Our 1st step isn’t to the man, it’s to where the man is going to be at or post-snap. Second step transitions into drive phase. #HogFBChat
A2: 1st step splits crotch, 2nd step follows as needed as quick as possible. Weight on the instep and driving hard! The key is horizontal displacement...move on down the line! #Hogfbchat
A2. Keep it simple. Same as zone blocking. Placement step with near foot. Power step with far foot. Strain and stay on your track. Most importantly force him out the back door. #hogfbchat
A2: Bucket step with the near foot and then looking to get playside foot into the ground before contact. Looking somewhere near where the near hip would be in that plane that extends to the ground. #hogfbchat
A2: Versus a tight shade--step at a 45 degree angle. Versus a wide alignment--step at a 90 degree angle or greater, especially against speed rushers. #hogfbchat
This, to me, is what’s most important. Lateral step to the width necessary to cut off defender and eliminate the gap. Initial steps are quick. The rest depends: Good DL countermove, undisciplined one’s shoot gaps so scouting report dictates our following steps. #hogfbchat
I have just found when we get lower so does our head and eyes, no matter how much we drill it and when our eyes and head go down we are playing in the dirt, never a good combination... #HogFbChat
A2: Down block left, angle step left; down block right, angle step right. Biggest coaching point is running the 40 through the defender's hip. Don't overcoach.
#Hogfbchat
A2:first step always flat second step can adjust to make sure of contact along with third! Once there 1000 steps a second work your feet #hogfbchat 1st step important Part of cutting off penetration
A2: near foot into the line right at defender. Good hand placement and drive them into the wash. Accelerate and lift - we get alot of great blocks out of down blocks. #hogfbchat
A2: quick 6 inch first step, more hand placement without leaning, try to go to where you want to take him but then where ever he goes help him get there a little bit faster #Hogfbchat
A1: If OL loves hands, I love a great fit with hands in the rib cage with face mask on near pec. Lifts defender, gives OL more control as block progresses. Must have the strength to make it happen. #hogfbchat
A2 Ok a 3.... inside Step is a bit more lateral than if blocking a 4i. Face mask below theirs, very firm outside hand on outside shoulder. No “duck dimeanor” Run!!!! Run!!!! #hogfbchat
We want to drive off the o/s foot so that the i/s foot takes the hips on an angle to violently attack that near V of the Neck w/ a great base. Can’t have feet die on contact. Must be ready to turn the feet over, again expecting the spin out or cross face escape #Hogfbchat
A2: cont. For My Bigger Dudes, who have trouble covering ground (6-8") w/playside foot on the fire-lead, I have them focus on Driving-Pushing off their backside foot/instep. Again the key is SPEED. Gotta get there before D gets across LoS #hogfbchat
A2: using @OLineWorld65 drive catch method, I coach my hogs that their aiming point is near foot to near foot of the DL near foot. Subject to change if the DL is downhill based on film study. Then it goes near foot to far foot #Hogfbchat
A2 cont: no set angle on steps get it covered up and drive. I teach country kids so I say your far number is the bullet you have to hit the near defender shoulder pad with. #hogfbchat
No more holsters for this guy. I did that for 15 years & ive gone to hands from the ground up. I’ve had better success in the last 4 years than I ever did loading our hands to our holsters. #hogfbchat
I've put more emphasis on bringing the backside punch to control the defender. KEY to keeping DL from rolling over the top of the down block. #hogfbchat
A2: a coaching point that we’ve used that we stole from @CoachDeleone_BU was the “step over the towel” on the first step. Forces a kid to apply force through the ground to fix the pivot that many kids struggle with #hogfbchat
That’s how I approach almost all of our fundamentals now. I provide options and different techniques and allow them to use what is most comfortable. Every player is different and I give as many options I can, and then they use what they need from the tool box #hogfbchat
A1+ I come to the conclusion that different guys need some options in down blocking footwork actually teach a floater first step and a more agressive 1st. step to put in the layer tool box and let them in game decide vs opponent. #hogfbchat
A3: we want movement at first level. I teach take first level to second. It’s hard for LBs to tackle or see ball with a D lineman in his lap #Hogfbchat
A3 we do on the front side say we have a 3 Tech we will deuce block him to the BSLB or a 5 Tech with a T and TE or H helps open up a hole front side and 2 on 1 is always better than 1 on 1 #hogfbchat
A3- Yes, in 2A Oklahkma Football I may not have a guy that can get good movement by his self. Two can do more than one in some scenarios for us, giving that at the best chance for success. #hogfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT coachvint: A2 drive off outside foot working at a 45 degree angle. We post to get our fist two steps in the ground and bring physical force to create movement. #hogfbchat
Yes. Win the LOS battle first. Move the line. If we get hip to hip. Stay square. Keep eyes on second level and communicate to who’s scraping and climbing with a me/you call we will win the 2 for 2 scenario. #hogfbchat
Yeah man! Nothing better than a beautiful deuce block on the frontside of power! Need the playside movement so the RB can keep his aiming point tight #Hogfbchat
1st step is always critical in OL play but it’s especially significant on down blocks...if you don’t get it cut off you have no chance...on any given play if the first step is wrong, you’ll never be right #hogfbchat
Yes, to create max movement at point of attack. Unfortunately led to backside LB making a lot of plays cause combo turned into double. A focus for next year. #hogfbchat
A3: I have and may go back to it this year as we use IZ as the starting point of everything. For a number of years we down blocked the whole front at an angle. Allowed us to focus on technique bc front didn’t matter
Our thought is if we can get a double team, we will use a double team. Combos for days! Get movement to LB's lap and pop off. Team work makes the dream work. etc. #hogfbchat
A3: We want movement, especially if that 3Tech is a big butt dude. Get the PSG and PST working together to BSLB. The key is they have to work together and not against each other #HogFbChat
We combo when running to a 3 tech or an inside shade 4I. I emphasize moving the 1st level and trying to get the 3 tech in the way of the scraping LB make him bubble
A3: Yes, we do. We want great displacement with those combos thus hopefully forcing defenses to struggle with their fits and allow any pulling OL to not have to travel through too much trash. Also need to have eyes on LB scraping over top. #hogfbchat
A3: Absolutely. I actually coach gap combos different than zone combos. Gap combo the guy coming down puts the shoulder in the gut and uses the flipper. Run feet, eyes up, communicate to see who gets LB. #Hogfbchat
Always if possible! We want to Combo any opportunity we have whether it be IZ/OZ or power/counter or lead draw. Tons of teach carryover from EDD and Indy. The why is simply because 2 is better than 1! Also can help a possible mismatch. #HogFbChat
A3! Absolutely! We need to make sure level one is accounted for before our guys climb to level 2. Helping your teammate get in better position, or putting a DT in an LB’s lap is good for any run blocking scheme. #HogFbChat
A3. If combo = a double team to lb then yes that's our whole point of running a gap scheme run. Get a double at the p.o.a, not a gap scheme with out a double if you ask me ;) #hogfbchat
A1: I always tell my guys to aim for the hips/ribs on the down block. Obviously we don’t want penetration, so head across in front, shoulder on near hip/ribs. #hogfbchat
From a DL perspective, if the OL cocks his hands back as they are attacking, it just gives us a better chance to get our hands on & inside gaining the leverage we need to hold the OL. Yes we hold too! #hogfbchat
A3: We focus on severe angle block approach. Get interior of combo to punch with forearm at chest and then grab & pull under arm, gets opposite arm moving up for combo block to punch under arm pit & leverage DL into pancake. Stole/learned from local JC staff #Hogfbchat
Absolutely I do. My starting guards in 3A ball were 160 & 170. I have to use numbers and angles to get to the grass. You can not make a tackle if you’re running around traffic at LB depth. #hogfbchat
A3: Don’t want to, but sometimes have to due to necessity. If necessary, try to straight double team and make up for extra man with motion/ctr action. Hard to teach 2-way OL/DL solid gap blocks as well as combos. #hogfbchat
A3: No fair, @coachfraz1120 took my answer!!! 😉 1000% after though, instead of our guys worrying about when to peel off when focused on driving the 1 threat (DL) back into the LB’s and causing too much traffic for them to be effective #HogFbChat
A3: Always if possible! We want to Combo any opportunity we have whether it be IZ/OZ or power/counter or lead draw. Tons of teach carryover from EDD and Indy. The why is simply because 2 is better than 1! Also can help a possible mismatch. #HogFbChat
A3: Only in terms of the inside man in the double team keeping his eyes inside and coming off to pickup a potential run-through threat. We do not come off over the top; we try to push the double team into the LB's path to make him run the hump. #hogfbchat
A3: No fair, @coachfraz1120 took my answer!!! 😉 1000% agree though, instead of our guys worrying about when to peel off when focused on driving the 1 threat (DL) back into the LB’s and causing too much traffic for them to be effective #HogFbChat
A3: Yes we do: We never want to “waste” a OL by having him down block nobody on his way to a LB only to have the LB run over the top. I want a combo whenever a OL doesn’t have an immediate threat to his gap. Still respnsible for his gap. Move LB to lap of LB. #hogfbchat
Yes of course. Not all 1 v 1 battles are ones we’re guaranteed to win but we SHOULD always win 2 v 1. Also, if we guess wrong, LB flows opposite and we miss him.
#hogfbchat
A3: 2 vs 1 is better than 1 vs 1. I think you’re doing it wrong if you’re not implementing combos in your gap schemes. Have to work the piss out of them every day that you can #hogfbchat
A3: we will use them if we don't have good angles on down blocks. We really like a good combo between guard and center on front side of trap if the nose is shaded on our center. Other than that we don't really use them because everything is based on angles #Hogfbchat
I’m very specific with my footwork on a down block. I tell my kids to take a 15° step. Flat step and gain ground. If you come upfield too much, you blow the block. If you’re too flat, you get penetration. I feel with 15° it’s the perfect ratio. #hogfbchat
A3. Yes we do. We double team the 3 with the G&T or the 5-7 with the T&TE. Tried to get vertical movement to LB. We also used a wing o/s the TE to help with combos. #hogfbchat
Q2: drive off outside foot, catch with inside foot aimed at splitting the crotch. Continue to pound the ground on the insteps through that angle. @OLineWorld65 = drive/catch
#hogfbchat
A3: Gotta do it. Next man covered? Down. Next man uncovered? Combo with my bro. C always has to pick for the puller if G is covered (even if he is covered by a 3)
#hogfbchat
A3: We're track oriented (WingT) vrs gap/area. Still - I want em to dbl up at LoS whenever possible - e.g. no backer in track. I want them hip-to-hip until they get push, THEN playside releases to backer (similar to Ace,Duece,Trey) #hogfbchat
A3. Yes. Combo blocking initially gives us a 4 legs on 2 legs advantage and later the RB’s path/ LB’s decision makes us right every time it’s done correctly. #Hogfbchat
Yes, if we can move Level 1, we’ve got a pretty good chance to run the football successfully. If you’re playing against a rock and roll defense, or if you have a beat on stunts/pressure not the worst idea to take the doubles off and let guys drive their i/s gaps. #hogfbchat
A3 cont. love it have our combo on gap scheme snap the dlineman out of his gap. ie a 3 tech into the a gap. Horizontal displacement really makes it go! #Hogfbchat
Glendale Community College. Coach Jim Rome. His son & another coach (I'm horrible w/ names) coach the OL. 2018 wasn't their best year, but he's been there 20+ years. #hogfbchat
A3 Combo whenever and however possible. I teach combo steps different than most but we work combos as much possible in drills and game like reps. The Inside guy has to have shoulder and eyes ready for run through, if they run over the top screw em #hogfbchat
A3: yes, we combo everything, we either combo up (zone) or combo back (bs LB). it allows us to simplify our rules vs multiple fronts and allows for us to utilize tempo. #hogfbchat
A3- Yes we force double teams to LB level if capable! Takes lots of work and practice on release to LB to easy for OL to screw up with sloppy Fundamentals! If you do it must be done a lot with much practice #ratherRunBuckSweep#HogFbChat
A3: Yes! We want vertical movement at the point of attack, who we double depends on the front, want to put a dent in the defensive front. We think it’s effective and brings an attitude to our offense. #HogFbChat
A3: Always when the front allows it. We get more horizontal displacement with our smaller O-linemen. Combo first level defenders to 2nd level and look for the run-through.#hogfbchat
Plus, I feel shorter arm movements are more violent & powerful because they can happen a lot faster than long sweeping movements when you cock your arms back. Think a boxers jab. #hogfbchat
A3: absolutely. I like Rick Trickett's philosophy of the covered player being the post player (stand him up) and the uncovered player is the drive player (take the combo to the LB.) combo blocks break a DLs will #Hogfbchat
Before that OL peels off to backer he is essentially pushed off by the overtaking OL... I have always felt is better to go by feel then verbal communication #HogFbChat
A3. We heavily emphasize getting on your track and naturally identifying combos. All the linemen should be aware of where the DL is and have eyes on the LBs. Communication is the difference between success and failure #hogfbchat
First off, that DC is begging to get beat BS. We would down block down the line and would run counter if we were just dying to run to their numbers. #hogfbchat
That's how we scheme it, too. Same for counter, for triple option, and for speed or for shovel option. Mostly shotgun runs, but also from tight bunch under center. #Hogfbchat
A3 love combo on a 3 or 4I especially if playing gap eating DT worry about combo 1st let LB make move and come off accordingly, can be demoralizing to a DT to get comboed 15 yds down the field #Hogfbchat
#Hogfbchat A4 G takes a lead step and drives forward, T takes an angle step to close the gap, shoulder-to-shoulder hip to hip low-to-high Leverage, combo to BS MLB
A4. G is post man, T is drive man. G stand him up, T crash and use outside hand to crush the hip. Both should have eyes on backer. Keep inside feet close to make a triangle. #HogFbChat
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachDingus: The Monday Night #hogfbchat is looking for corporate sponsors for our brand! If you want your business to be marketed on the highest trending chat on twitter, message me or CoachShiffman!
A4 PSG squares up to inside of outside number PST drives through hip to armpit of 3 technique creating the displacement have 4 eyes on LB if he comes underneath it’s the G over the top T #hogfbchat
We work hip to hip with eyes to the off backer. If LB comes inside Post man comes off. If LB over the top Lead man comes off. This condo is more horizontal than vertical. Communication helps also, ME=off YOU = staying #hogfbchat
Guard drive catch straight. Inside hand to center / inside number. Tackle key the knee of 3 to makesure it’s not slanting away If coming forward or to the tackle then 45degree drive catch. Fight to get hip to hip stay square and snow plow with guard to a second level #hogfbchat
A4 so the guard is treating the 3 like a normal drive block. While the tackle is running his path to the LB flat down the line which is through the 3s hips which is going to displace most DTs #hogfbchat
A4: work hip to hip, make sure p/s foot works through the crotch, keep butt down, and drive feet. Try to focus on keeping the elbow in tight by both players, that way one doesn’t give ground due to poor position. #hogfbchat
A4: Duce with PSG looking for run through underneath while “steering” the DBL. PST is focused on movement and cannot come off after 1st 3 steps. #Hogfbchat
A3: Yes! Hear defensive guys say all the time “the quickest way for the O to score is to let them run a straight line to the end zone” the easier we can it for our guy to run that straight line, the better #hogfbchat
A4: Well the short version is "See that guy there? Move him out of the way so we can run the ball where he used to be. When his buddy shows up, one of you get in his way." I'm a simple man fellas. #hogfbchat
I call those slam scoops, gives DTs a little trouble because they start out like a dbl team. DTs have to feel if an OL is trying to cross his face or are they both trying to pop his head like a zit. #hogfbchat
A4: PST: Normal down block technique.
PSG: Must step with inside foot first. Pick it up, put it down. Second step goes through the crotch of defender. Must keep inside hand free. Only coming off if inside gap is threatened. #hogfbchat
A4. Hip to hip. Inside hands on the chest plate. 4 eyes on level 2. Don’t get split and drive. Communicate and if one comes off help your teammate overtake the block and bump you off. #HogFbChat
A3 Im not a fan of a true combo at most HS’s Essentially a double team guard keeps eyes out of block he has A. Tackle is unconditionally down. Let LB run over top. #hogfbchat
A4: The biggest coaching point in our double teams is getting the kids to understand that the inside man is the post blocker and the outside man is the drive/lead blocker, or turn man. The inside man must press his hips to the outside man once he feels him come down. #Hogfbchat
A4: Don’t see much run through, but BSLB always seems to show up in the hole. Teach G to grab the neck of the shoulder pad and throw it across and slam the T down as hard as possible to get it across the face of the G...T comes off to LB. #hogfbchat
I like the analogy of closing the zipper... foot to foot, hip to hip, shoulder to shoulder, and finally hand to hand... again firm believer of being violent with striking the hands, one of the biggest underutilized assets on the OL at the HS level imo #Hogfbchat
A4) T- angle step, near hand to sternum, far hand under shoulder pad. Helmet thru hip G- covered side (PS) foot take vertical step, with PS hand driving up violently. Keep BS hand out, eyes on LB #Hogfbchat
A4. We're old school. 1st step hip to hip inside man has inside half/# out side man has outside half/# of dl. 4 hands on dl 4 eyes on lb bring those knees thrpigh his crotch with each step. Head on the shoulder #Hogfbchat
A4: Step to near number. Get foot to foot, hip to hip, and shoulder to shoulder. Inside hands on numbers outside hands on the shoulders so they can quickly snap off to LB. Staying low with four hands on and four eyes on the LB. #hogfbchat
A4: step to him, get close together and get your inside hands on him also your shoulders and drive, with your other hand as a flipper incase a lb appears so you can scrap and get him #Hogfbchat
A4: PSG uses near hand, near foot on the combo. PST is responsible for creating movement and getting hip to hip. As they combo to the 2nd level, PSG looks for the run-through LB. #hogfbchat
A4: Tackle takes a 45 degree step into midpoint of the 3, throws shoulder into gut and runs flipper. G takes a direct step, shoulder to gut, run flipper. Drive off insteps. Eyes up and talk to each other to see who gets LB. Must get movement #Hogfbchat
A4: PST bucket with PS foot. 2nd step into the crotch engaging with flipper on the off arm. PSG open step for more depth getting two quick steps in and contacting with PS flipper. Working hip to hip w/4 eyes on LB. Will look to bump off T unless a threat to A gap.#hogfbchat
Psg post lift half man. PST down to near hip contact drive psg squeezes hip of tackle has a gap run to 3 tech pst has 3tech to lb over the top. #hogfbchat
A4: PSG Base blocks - fire-stepping ps foot rt at DT, face in chest. Key is fast feet, sticking insteps to get positing. PST Fire-Lead steps at DT's near # and engages. PST is the "Driver". Once he's engaged, their hips must, MUST come together #hogfbchat
A4 PSG would step inside foot first, outside foot 2nd splitting the 3 techs crotch in half; outside hand uppercut, grab and lift the pads. His eyes on BS LB. PST steps outside foot, then inside foot through the crotch; Inside hand uppercut, grab and lift. #hogfbchat
A4: I like the analogy of closing the zipper... foot to foot, hip to hip, shoulder to shoulder, and finally hand to hand... again firm believer of being violent with striking the hands, one of the biggest underutilized assets on the OL at the HS level imo #Hogfbchat
A4: what do you guys teach for a fit as you combo? We went from burying our shoulder pads in hips on question 1 to watching for LBs in question 4. How do we successfully teach our OLs the fit to do this well? #hogfbchat
A4 gap scheme step with your inside foot. Guard clears grass with inside foot and works into D-lineman with shoulder. Tackle wide step to get hip to hip and work vertical with guard. Stay on the double team until the LB makes you come off #HogFbChat
A4: get hip to hip, explode into defender and drive him through linebackers face. Makes linebackers guess and guess wrong. If there is a spike or slant, near OL blocks him solo and other one climbs vrtical to block linebacker #hogfbchat
A3: Absolutely. Want the Power to hit as vertical as possible. Want the Playside A, B, and C Gaps moved to the backside of the center. Typically only happens if you get heavy combos playside. #hogfbchat
A4 guard steps inside foot first - gains no ground, 2nd step is vertical. Two hands on the dlineman working to displace them to the a gap. Tackle is going to step inside to the far hip then near hip. Makes contact with playside shoulder and hands. 4 eyes on Lb. #hogfbchat
A4PST taking a direct step and PSG taking a flat or open step based on our splits. Getting hip to hip. 4 eyes on second level, if LB is reading block 3 tech into LB. DRIVE! Depending on the run type will determine who gets off the 3-Tech. To the second level!! #HogFbChat
A4:PSG will "cheat-step" to set timing PST lateral first step to"break ankle" of G, both 2nd step vertical, then cement shoulders and hips together to drive, eyes on gap for LB and communicate #hogfbchat
Q4: PSG - drive off inside/catch outside splitting crotch. PST - drive off outside/catch inside splitting crotch. Work to hip to hip, pound ground on insteps, working on an angle. #hogfbchat
A4: depends on where the play is going. Is it GT counter where the PSG and PST are driving towards the backside backer? Or is it a Play where they need vertical movement? Generally PSG is post player and PST drives 3-tech down. #hogfbchat
A4: cont - If Hips to come together, to many times I see them working against each other - force applied from to sides bleeding away force. Once the get '2 steps push' I have PST release to backer (I'm blessed to have animals for guards!) #hogfbchat
A4: think that can change depending on whether he’s a reader or a penetrator but we like our PSG to be the post man while the PST is the drive man responsible for more horizontal movement- either by Gallop tech or not- depends on the kid #hogfbchat
A4: depends on the play but I’m teaching play through 1/2 a man and take the combo to LB depth. I make my young kids do this before we ever even come off on LBs. If you can create that movement consistently, you take the OL to the LBs and not vice versa. #hogfbchat
A4) depending on what the surface is and what backer we are working to. PSG-Tap step to react to slant-second step attack through crotch of DT. PST flat/gallop step-get hip to hip attacking through crotch. Violently move DT into the path of the LB. FINISH! #hogfbchat
A4 guard keep your eyes out of the block. Step together with tackle. Guard has A gap run thru. Tackle stays on. Let linebacker run free over the top. Seen to many Split “Combos” at HS level. #hogfbchat
Drive outside foot into the ground in place, catch foot between the crotch....shoulders together w/wing(not half bench, wing has bigger surface area) & drive them into the ground #HogFbChat
Word for word the way I teach it 😉 except I tell the climber when the LB winks to “throw the DL to the wolf”...extend the drive hand and push him off. Keeps DL grabbing/dragging to DT OL too #Hogfbchat
A4: HIPPO. Hip to hip, elbow to elbow. Same gap foot, same gap shoulder and get vertical as fast as possible. Outside eye up for scraping backer. #HogFBChat
A4 cont: I also teach my guys only 2 hands on. If they keep outside hand/arm free it’s easier to get off to backer that’s is filling or scraping. 4 hands on generally turns shoulders and the guys start working against each other. #hogfbchat
A4: depends on where the play is going. Is it GT counter where the PSG and PST are driving towards the backside backer? Or is it a Play where they need vertical movement? Generally PSG is post player and PST drives 3-tech down. #hogfbchat
A4: G- false steps to allow T to get caught up, then attacks vertically. T- drive catch to get near foot to crotch relationship of DL & get hip/hip relation W/guard. Take DBL team to LB #Hogfbchat
A1: Flat to 45 on first step with near hip as aiming point. Reverse shoulder vs penetration with opposite hand on the ground for bear crawl. Near shoulder vs reader with head behind. (We use shoulder/surface on primary defenders at the LOS)
#HogFBChat
For Any NC/SC/VA/GA guys; Make sure to check this Free Clinic on Jan. 20th; lots of great speakers and I’ll be talking about gap scheme Fundamentals myself. Id enjoy seeing some of you all there. #hogfbchat
As an always-not-formerly OL coach, I scheme whole offensive scheme around KISS for OL. Focus on multiplicity & mastery. Make other groups learn wrinkles & adjustments. Want OL to focus on explosion & nastiness based on mastery, not having to overthink fronts & rules. #hogfbchat
A4: two roll steps to keep both playersoutside leg back for release to LB when he declares we use a flipper old school but still see NFL teams using it especially on combo! Key to this block I believe is movement, next the take over of DL after one OL releases #hogfbchat
Big shoutout to @CoachDingus tonight for being a great cohost and wishing him a happy birthday. We’ve both had tough weekends so this was much needed! #hogfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT DraftOrtiz: A4: HIPPO. Hip to hip, elbow to elbow. Same gap foot, same gap shoulder and get vertical as fast as possible. Outside eye up for scraping backer. #HogFBChathttps://t.co/fL3YA2RUlz
A4: 2 hands on the 3 tech hip to hip, 4 eyes on the backer we are coming off to. Want to stay on Double team until we can smell the LB’s breath. #Hogfbchat
As always please remember to follow your fellow coaches for weekly chats and collaborations! This is the best profession in the world in my opinion. #hogfbchat
If any of you have questions or topics you would like discussed on the chat please dm myself or @CoachDingus so we can get them on the schedule #hogfbchat
Yes we did! I am forever grateful for this great profession! Much love to all our brothers in coaching. Life is short men! Don’t take it for granted! #hogfbchat
Big shoutout to @CoachDingus tonight for being a great cohost and wishing him a happy birthday. We’ve both had tough weekends so this was much needed! #hogfbchat
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the second annual #hogfbchat offensive line clinic to be held at @RhodesFootball on March 10th 2018! We truly hope to see you all there this year
A2: Step 1- short, quick with hands at the ready.
Step 2- Contact with feet wider than shoulder width.
Step 3-6 Short, choppy steps keeping width for balance.
#HogFBChat
Even when we can’t get a true combo on zone or gap runs due to alignment we do a “high-leg” technique which is kind of a hop step to gain a little momentum to open up a hole. #hogfbchat
PSG-Lifter: drive off o/s 👟, “catch” 👟 shouldn’t widen. Get 2nd drive in the ground on or b4 making contact w/ the shoulder bringing the forearm up in support. PST: Driver: drive off o/s 👟 stay square to LOS cover half the man & work vertical (4 ✋on DL 4 👀 on LB)#Hogfbchat
I missed the #hogfbchat tonight but we were honoring and celebrating our players tonight at our banquet. Love all my guys but particularly proud of these two guys who have been leaders for us & earned team and All-Region awards @JHerring190@hamm_98
Both take a 45 degree step towards each other. Get hip to hip and shoulder to shoulder. Inside hand to playside # and pump outside arm. Heads need to be lower than 3 tech shoulders #Hogfbchat
Lost my best friend since 8th grade yesterday. We were Teammates in MS and HS. He died yesterday at age 32. Left behind two young girls. He and I started coaching together in 2005 he left the profession! Miss you brother! #HogFbChat
A3/A4: Yes, we double team on all gap schemes when possible. Deuce Block: Hip to Hip, Knee to Knee, Shoulder to Shoulder; Cleats in Ground, Forklift, Eyes on LB; Keep your stagger, VERTICAL movement to force LB to run thru/run over. If we dent the front, we have a play.#hogfbchat
Everyone have a great week! Been a great time, as my good pal @coachlovell says “Be where your feet are!” All of us are making an impact & difference where we are at, keep it up fellas! #Hogfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachShiffman: Big shoutout to CoachDingus tonight for being a great cohost and wishing him a happy birthday. We’ve both had tough weekends so this was much needed! #hogfbchat
I’m talking power. And to be honest I’d probably just teach a solo down until I was guaranteed a team wouldn’t run a Bear front. What scheme are you talking? #Hogfbchat
And anyone looking to take their OL (and other positions) teaching/learning to the next level, check out @TAttackAcademy for the best in online teaching, learning, assessing, and player/coach continuity and accountability. #hogfbchat Get a demo set up...you won't regret it!
I was honestly just giving you crap. If it works for you that’s awesome! More than one way to skin a cat. My tackle and guard are lined up on the same plain. So it shouldn’t be too difficult to get them hip to hip on the first step. G and T step together on first step. #hogfbchat
A4: I want a hip to hip marriage between G and T. 4 hands on the 3 tech, 4 eyes on the LB. Read where he's going and break off accordingly. Ideally we deposit him into the LB #hogfbchat
A4 work hip to hip but guard cannot step towards the 3 it is tackles responsibility to get to the hip. Guard must be ready to come off. Depending on several factors we may punch and go to next level with PSG #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat
Canadian OL coach here...on a dbl I have BOTH OL jab-pop step (pick it up, put it down outside foot, then upfield with inside foot). Lots of space to work with, gets the OL in sync...#Hogfbchat
In reply to
@FISTFootball, @Coach_Adam_Mac, @Coach_Pfiester
I don’t teach power as an off tackle play. I teach power one gap wider than IZ. Essentially PSC to PSA. If the BSLB runs over the top. The RB will cut back in a hole that opens up wider than @CoachKennedyFB wallet at Waffle House. #Hogfbchat
A1: Flat first step, attack the V of the neck with the screws, reach for far number with inside hand, be heavy handed on the backside to close the door. Didn’t overcoach it. #Hogfbchat
Love #Hogfbchat and all chats during the week. Will help make the off season that much better and love seeing coaches love to help others out with their knowledge! Let's keep it up coaches! Best job ever!
