We conducted two large group brainstorming sessions with kids early in the semester to take their thoughts on what they wanted the day to look like.

Q1. Dr. Hall also worked with the instructional leadership team to brainstorm/problem solve plans for the anniversary. This team is comprised of lead teachers from each department as well as counselors #PrinLeaderChat
A2 One of the things I recall going over with students was to accept that everyone grieves and processes differently and we need to give people the space to do that. Big voices and small voices both matter! #PrinLeaderChat
A3 Our teachers were encouraged to teach thier passion, take a break from standards-driven instruction and plan engaging activities as kids made their way through the class schedule that highlighted our theme of Stand Up. Walk Up. Speak Up. #PrinLeaderChat
I can tell everyone that our staff and students handled the situation so well. They kept their cool and their actions saved many lives. Our entire community and the surrounding school districts have given support since day 1. #PrinLeaderChat
Q4. The students and staff had shirts that read walk up step up speak up. I hope future anniversaries will return to this and reinforce them #PrinLeaderChat
#PrinLeaderChat The school did an amazing job of involving the community, district admin, parents and first responders in the first anniversary event. Therapy dogs and counselors were on hand for students and staff through out the day.

As a teacher it was nice to be able to step away from my curriculum and involve the kids in one thing I’m excited about. It helps with the building relationships part of our job that is so important. It let our students see another side of us #PrinLeaderChat

Absolutely. We got a great deal of support from local and regional mental health support. Biggest guidance I recall: there is no right way to do it - just listen to everyone you can. #PrinLeaderChat
One thing I would like to mention is that an anniversary is an important step for healing but I also think it is important for reminding everyone that a tragedy happened and those close to the incident continue to struggle even 365 days later. #PrinLeaderChat
