A1 ... I unpack my embedded assessment, align my standards, then plan lessons to target the skills & concepts students need to master #springboardPL #HCPSTeach
  • themaurywood Nov 9 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1: I research the hot technology topics. I ask my Ss. I try to plan lessons that build on each other. Projects are great! I can see Ss grow in their knowledge. #hcpsteach
  • BrittanyAnair25 Nov 9 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 I love collaborating with teammates, like @ldumont82! Some of my best planning comes from combining our ideas! We've been using meaningful data to really plan what skills to teach. #hcpsteach
  • LlewellynEDU Nov 9 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 Currently I️’m using backwards planning, starting with the standards, assessments, and DOK levels. #HCPSTeach @tbk8hero
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:12 PM EST
Yea ... we’re going to talk standards later tonight 💜 #hcpsteach

    Data works! #hcpsteach
    In reply to @KMPawloski
  • ldumont82 Nov 9 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2 Looks like kids involved, interacting, and doing most of the work (learning) #whosdoingthework #HCPSTeach
  • BrittanyAnair25 Nov 9 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2 Engagement is involved learners... doesn't necessarily mean have they have a pencil in their hand or are busy, but Ss are actively learning and trying to discover more about the topic. Discussions, thinking outside the box, exploring the content #hcpsteach
  • KMPawloski Nov 9 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2: Students are able to connect content and lesson to their own life. Conversations are buzzing and students are guiding discussion with their own questions. #HCPSTeach
  • themaurywood Nov 9 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2: At the beginning, there are a lot of "cool" and "ooohhhh". You know you have the Ss then. Class should be busy with chatter, but good chatter. Engaged students are focused, having a good time, and learning. Ss should leave the room smarter. #HCPSTeach
    In reply to @SylviaEllison
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2 ... Students focused on the learning ... able to connect learning to the unpacked EA or standard ... "Wow, I get it!" "This is hard ... yea, I'm doing it." #HCPSTeach
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:20 PM EST
Had a S tell me today that class was boring .. I agreed when the S is absent 3/5 days each week ... he’s not bored > he’s lost #hcpsteach
    In reply to @themaurywood
  • ClaudioZavalaJr Nov 9 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2: Engagement can be noisy, quiet, fun, & frustrating all at once! #HCPSTeach
    In reply to @SylviaEllison

    In reply to @jessxbo
  • GuyCivics Nov 9 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2: kids taking charge of their learning which can be just about any noise level #HCPSTeach
    In reply to @SylviaEllison
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:24 PM EST
Q3 ... How do you PLAN for engaging lessons? @HarrisonPeters #HCPSTeach
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:24 PM EST
Welcome! True ... quiet or noisy #hcpsteach
    In reply to @GuyCivics
  • jessxbo Nov 9 @ 8:24 PM EST
A2: I think this looks different for all Ss/lessons. Sometimes my Ss are most engaged when silent, sometimes when making tons of noise #HCPSTeach
  • LlewellynEDU Nov 9 @ 8:24 PM EST
A2: High expectations & rigorous lessons; S are taking control of the convo, and taking risks are encouraged #hcpsteach
  • ldumont82 Nov 9 @ 8:26 PM EST
@HCPSHammond currently doing a TLAP book study, lots of great hooks to help in planning for engagement...kinesthetic, music, arts, etc. #HCPSTeach #daveburgess
  • themaurywood Nov 9 @ 8:27 PM EST
A3: This is going to make me sound like a nerd, but I always try to top myself. If I have a really good lesson, the Ss expect it every time. That's a lot of pressure, but I like it. We as Ts are on stage every day, we have to be ready to frankly perform. #hcpsteach
  • jessxbo Nov 9 @ 8:27 PM EST
A3: I don’t know that I always ‘plan for engagement’ to be honest... I am however always passionate about what I’m teaching, which in turn makes my Ss engaged #hcpsteach
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:27 PM EST
💜 the Pirate series ... if you haven’t read them, check out @CTechEd for their webinars 💜 #hcpsteach
    In reply to @ldumont82, @HCPSHammond, @CTechEd
  • ClaudioZavalaJr Nov 9 @ 8:28 PM EST
A3: My goal is to have learners do more if he talking than myself #HCPSTeach
    In reply to @SylviaEllison, @HarrisonPeters
  • BrittanyAnair25 Nov 9 @ 8:29 PM EST
A3 Look for as many hooks and things that relate to my Ss' interests and can be connected to the skill being taught. Explore resources and take risks! . #HCPSTeach
  • themaurywood Nov 9 @ 8:29 PM EST
A3: I teach technology for the whole school, so I see every S in the span of ten days. I want to teach and train them and have fun doing it. #hcpsteach
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:29 PM EST
    Love it !! #hcpsteach
    In reply to @themaurywood
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:30 PM EST
A3 ... After standards and #springboardPL embedded assessment, I check the framework provided, and add in resources as needed - based on S learning style #HCPSTeach
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:31 PM EST
    Q4 in 1 minute #HCPSTeach
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:32 PM EST
Q4 ... Can teachers plan effective & engaging lessons without knowing their standards? #HCPSTeach
  • KMPawloski Nov 9 @ 8:32 PM EST
A3: Setting goals and visualizing what Ss will take away and continue to apply is key. Activities are meaningful, student-centered, and created for the 21st century learner. Connecting with your students creates empowered learning for all students. #connect #hcpsteach
  • themaurywood Nov 9 @ 8:32 PM EST
A3: With that being said, ask the Ss. What would get everyone involved? I have stopped in the middle of a lesson before bc I knew Ss were not into it. They could not believe I did it. I gained a lot of respect that day. #honesty #hcpsteach #ifthehouseisonfiregetout
  • LlewellynEDU Nov 9 @ 8:33 PM EST
A3: I plan w/ the end in mind and I️ try to WICORIZE my lessons and include diff. learning styles. Keep them wanting more! #HCPSTeach #AVID
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:33 PM EST
    Power packed ... sweet! #hcpsteach
    In reply to @KMPawloski
  • themaurywood Nov 9 @ 8:33 PM EST
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:33 PM EST
Reflection regardless of the time is critical to improved teaching & learning 💜 #hcpsteach
    In reply to @themaurywood
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:34 PM EST
Wow! Not quite the response I expected ... but perfect gif for the question! #hcpsteach
    In reply to @themaurywood
  • ldumont82 Nov 9 @ 8:34 PM EST
A4 You could be engaging but not necessarily effective #HCPSTeach
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:35 PM EST
A4 ... Maybe effective OR engaging, but I think it would be challenging to plan cohesive instruction without using my standards #HCPSTeach
  • GuyCivics Nov 9 @ 8:35 PM EST
Q4: No way. The standards are the compass. It's what makes the learning effective. Your knowledge of the kids is the freedom to be creative and make the engagement happen. #HCPSTeach
    In reply to @SylviaEllison
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:36 PM EST
    Love this analogy! #hcpsteach
    In reply to @GuyCivics
  • KMPawloski Nov 9 @ 8:38 PM EST
Q4: Beginning with the end in mind guides backwards design. Understanding the standards provides a necessary guide for student self-assessment and intentional teacher-led instruction. #hcpsteach
  • LlewellynEDU Nov 9 @ 8:39 PM EST
A4: It might be engaging but what are they truly learning if you don’t know the standards... I’m not taking a trip without a map #HCPSTeach
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:39 PM EST
    Yes! #hcpsteach
    In reply to @KMPawloski
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:40 PM EST
    Q5 in 1 minute #HCPSTeach
  • BrittanyAnair25 Nov 9 @ 8:40 PM EST
A4 It would be hard... standards help give us the end in the mind and allow us to know what areas Ss need to focus on. You might be able to plan a good lesson, but it might be hard to make it meaningful. #HCPSTeach
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:41 PM EST
Q5 ... How does effort support or clash with mastery? #HCPSTeach
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:41 PM EST
They definitely give us - Ss & Ts- our destination for college/career readiness #hcpsteach
    In reply to @BrittanyAnair25
  • themaurywood Nov 9 @ 8:42 PM EST
    Just realized...Did I crash a local chat? #hcpsteach
  • ClaudioZavalaJr Nov 9 @ 8:44 PM EST
A4: You have to know where you’re taking Ss; strive to making it an engaging journey #HCPSTeach
    In reply to @SylviaEllison
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:44 PM EST
    No ... we are Home/Charter/Public&Private/school teachers chat ... always welcome! ☺️ #hcpsteach
    In reply to @themaurywood
  • jessxbo Nov 9 @ 8:44 PM EST
A4: I suppose you could be engaging without knowledge of the standards, but I doubt very effective.. #hcpsteach
  • themaurywood Nov 9 @ 8:44 PM EST
A5: We can't really be a jack of all trades and a master of none. If you think about it, teaching is hard because we have to adjust on the fly. We have to notice trends. We have to constantly get better. Work smart, not hard. #hcpsteach
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:45 PM EST
I think I used to have engaging lessons without standards but it was very silo-ish tchg ... lessons did not really connect #hcpsteach 😌
    In reply to @jessxbo
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:48 PM EST
I’m very standards driven now though ... huge difference - in planning & instruction #hcpsteach
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:49 PM EST
A5 ... I think effort needs to lead to mastery ... but if not given with feedback, it can become mere compliance (esp if grading is involved) #HCPSTeach
  • LlewellynEDU Nov 9 @ 8:49 PM EST
A5: Some give a great effort, but you can’t master what you don’t fully understand. #HCPSTeach
  • ClaudioZavalaJr Nov 9 @ 8:49 PM EST
@SylviaEllison sorry gotta drop out. Time for rehearsal 😃 #HCPSTeach
  • themaurywood Nov 9 @ 8:50 PM EST
A5: I had meetings with my Ss every so often just to talk about where they were, set goals, get them to where they needed to be. We built a very family type atmosphere. Ss helped each other. Cheered for everyone. #hcpsteach
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:51 PM EST
    Q6 in 1 minute #HCPSTeach
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:51 PM EST
And how many tchrs think they know the standards but don’t 😞 ... how can we get them to realize that and/or the need? #hcpsteach
    In reply to @LlewellynEDU
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:51 PM EST
Thanks for joining ... always a pleasure learning from and with you 😊 #hcpsteach
    In reply to @ClaudioZavalaJr
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:52 PM EST
Q6 ... Time to GIVE A SHOUT OUT to those that support all we do! :) #HCPSTeach Time to show some love!
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:53 PM EST
Thanks for sharing ... I got mine from Justin Wilson-Gabor ... amazing tchr in Pinellas County #hcpsteach (tag his handle when I find it)
    In reply to @LlewellynEDU
  • themaurywood Nov 9 @ 8:53 PM EST
A5: I am an interventionist for math now. Each Ss knows where they are at and where they need to be. We also talk about how we are going to get there. You HAVE to get Ss to take ownership of their learning. #hcpsteach
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:55 PM EST
I teach bottom quartile sts in a high-needs Title 1 HS ... many are accustomed to failure ... we start w/ writing new narrative #HCPSTeach

  • themaurywood Nov 9 @ 8:55 PM EST
A6: The staff @westhillstigers & @MarshallCoSch are very encouraging. My wife is my biggest cheerleader. She encouraged me to start presenting. I've done one conference, doing another one in November, and another in June hopefully. #hcpsteach
  • jessxbo Nov 9 @ 8:55 PM EST
A6: I feel like I learn from sooo many people on the regular. My PLN is my edulifeline. #hcpsteach
  • KMPawloski Nov 9 @ 8:56 PM EST
A5: Supporting a productive struggle in the classroom creates a culture where effort is the norm. It’s okay to have a bad day. There is always an opportunity to grow and become better! Student effort matters. #hcpsteach
  • SylviaEllison Nov 9 @ 8:56 PM EST
Maybe we’ll meet F2F one day ... I presented in Seattle last year, train around country, Conf coming up #hcpsteach
