This chat is moderated by Grapevine-Colleyville ISD educators where we discuss current education trends and deepen our learning. 1st and 3rd Thursdays at 8:30 PM CST September to May @msbearce @SBarkerEDU
A1: I’m currently reading Overcoming the Achievement Gap Trap by Anthony Muhammad. It’s unfortunately still as relevant as ever to education, but it’s a good read. #GCISDchat
A1: I'm currently reading "You Win The Locker Room First" and learning a lot of great tricks about developing resilient and mentally-strong teams. Thanks for letting me borrow it @MichaelCrow03#gcisdchat
A1: I’m currently reading Overcoming the Achievement Gap Trap by Anthony Muhammad. It’s unfortunately still as relevant as ever to education, but it’s a good read. #GCISDchat
A1 The SLP team has been tackling "Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity" by David Allen- It's Marie Condo for the workplace :)
#gcisdchat
A1: This might seem nerdy, but I made my own binder with TEKS, GCISD curriculum maps, student data, lead4ward & AVID instructional strategies, & all things documentation & planning in one so it’s not forgotten! #gcisdchat
A1: Twitter is usually the resource I use first when searching. I love how it lets me see into classrooms all across the world giving me ideas on how to support students. #gcisdchat
A2: I’ll have to say @gcouros book Innovator’s Mindset. I think in general the shift this made in my mindset. It was my affirmation that it’s okay to do what I felt was best for kids and relationships do matter even more than we think. #gcisdchat
A2: I’ve said this book a million times and I’ll keep saying it, Wall of Fame! The story of how @AVID4College began but more importantly, an eye-opening look at the American education system and the importance of teachers as advocates for ALL students. #gcisdchat
A3: @ScienceToolkit’s session on incorporating tradebooks into the 5E model- transformed how I teach science! I love being able to connect literature and science, my two favorite things! #gcisdchat
A3: kagan. Cooperative learning structures are a must! Kids need to be elaborating their thinking with others throughout the lesson, every day. No one hogging the convo and no one gets to be a log. Everyone participates. #GCISDchat
A2: Ooohhh yes!!! I can remember exactly where I was when I read this and thought...wow! Game changer. This changes things for my class! Teaching 2nd grade at Dove Elementary! #gcisdchat
A3: The Solution Tree training on RTI I attended this year was really enlightening. It reinforced the importance of challenging ALL of our students - even those who were not “born on third base.” #GCISDchat
@pbriggs728 is a game changer! Love his message! Also, @SchlechtyCenter completely changed the way I view myself and students. Gave me a framework for designing engaging work with purpose and intentionality! #gcisdchat
A3: Kagan Cooperative Learning and Jeff Anderson. Kagan changed the way I do “group work” to an actual functional tool and Jeff completely changed the way I view grammar instruction. #GCISDchat
A2: The Hate U Give... but I also think our high schoolers would benefit from reading this jarring look at a need for systematic change ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 #gcisdchat
A3: I attended an amazing session at my last school where all of the staff members shared emotional stories about their backgrounds and their personal lives. It really helped us connect as a team, and it energized me about working with so many awesome individuals #gcisdchat
A3: shout out to the edcamps out there! #EdCampDallas For sure the place that rejuvenates me - along with attending @TCEA! This is where I get fed! #gcisdchat
Andddd I can’t believe I forgot to mention it... AVID summer institute!!! A place where I met like minded people, gain a ton of strategies, and firmed up what my beliefs were as an educator #gcisdchat
A3: Working on the Work w/ @SchlechtyCenter completely transformed my beliefs about teaching and learning. HUGE impact on me as a teacher and now an admin. #gcisdchat
A3: Capturing Kids Hearts was life changing for me. Making the time to establish those relationships is crucial before we can ever think about establishing routines, procedures, or even teaching! #GCISDchat
I’m a pretty dynamic learner and enjoy a combination! Attending a PD...I’m also researching the content. Listening to a podcast...also making notes and searching hashtags. Love the amount of learning we have at our fingertips #gcisdchat
A4: I love the collaborative aspect of PD because I get to process with colleagues but I like the individual reflection while diving into a book for a book study! #gcisdchat
A3: AVID Summer Institute is my summer camp. It is seriously summer camp for people who are passionate about high opportunities and expectations for all students! Also, Results Coaching. So thankful for that opportunity! #gcisdchat
A4: I start prof books w/ the table of contents and only read the chapters I need. Keeps me focused. @LHopkinsGCISD has turned me on to Podcasts. They’re my jam. #gcisdchat
A5: a variety of ways. Pinterest. Twitter. Observations. Reading a book or article. A great training with immediate application. Great thought provoking convo. Through trial n error with reflection. #GCISDchat
A4: I like a variety of ways to learn. Sometimes I need just a hands-on demonstration while other times I want to highlight and mark up a text while sitting in my bed. #gcisdchat
A3&A4: I cannot speak highly enough about the @gcisd district wide day we have where ALL TEACHERS come together in August to teach each other & learn! My favorite day of the year! Plus, we learn best from teaching & from talking with those walking in our shoes! #gcisdchat
A4: Lately, I have been watching webinars, not my favorite, but I can sign up and watch the replays on my own time. I also do a lot of researching and looking things up that I need to learn about. #gcisdchat
Andddd I can’t believe I forgot to mention it... AVID summer institute!!! A place where I met like minded people, gain a ton of strategies, and firmed up what my beliefs were as an educator #gcisdchat
A4: I have a long commute so I love audiobooks. But my favorite is still in person professional learning! I need other people’s brains to collaborate, practice, reflect, and talk through my learning. Just like kids do! #gcisdchat
A3: love the thinking that happens at #sxswedu There is something for everyone - innovative technologies, student voice, leadership, SEL and the list goes on...#GCISDchat
Love that statement! I would have to agree with you! I feel very all over, excuse me...dynamic as a learner!! I love any way and every way to learn!!! ❤️ #gcisdchat
A5: I think it starts with knowing your who. We don’t control IF our “students” learn, but we control the experiences we create that require them to learn (i.e. sense of urgency, WHY, data, interests, goals, etc...) #gcisdchat
A5: deep question @RRLiaison! I still remember when I was hired years ago, my Principal told me that in order to grow as teachers and leaders, we must continue to grow (personally and professionally) and “take a leap” into the uncomfortable. Advice I still live by! #gcisdchat
A4: PD that models how the instruction should be implemented! If adults don’t enjoy staying seated and taking in info. how would we be expected to take it back to our classrooms? Get me up out of my seat! #gcisdchat
A5: One of the best ways to share resources for professional growth is by discussion. Offering a suggestion when you overhear someone talking about something in their classroom and sharing ideas working in your own classroom is a great way to promote learning. #gcisdchat
A5: Lead by example! With my students I always share what I am currently reading and what I’m learning from it! Its my goal to challenge them to never stop learning! #gcisdchat
By the conditions we create. Do we have a culture that values risk taking, asking hard questions, and collaboration? As leaders, what questions are we asking the provoke thinking? How are we standing in the gaps and pulling on both ends to close them? #gcisdchat
A5: Passion and energy are contagious! My goal is to make middle schoolers excited about the benefits of AVID strategies and if they’re using them in other classes, then their excitement and energy will be seen by their other teachers! #gcisdchat
A6: As an English teacher, I sought to expose my students to diverse authors and viewpoints early and often. Literature can help them to see how much more alike we are than different. #GCISDchat
A6 I used to put up quotes all around my room from African American Educators- My favorite is Mary Mcleod Bethune-
"Invest in the human soul. Who knows, it might be a diamond in the rough." #gcisdchat
A5: Model. Live it daily. You can’t force people to try new things, but you can do your thing and the excitement from students that spreads might encourage the learning. When I hear my Ss talk about other Ts fun activities I ask them about it! #gcisdchat
A5 I don't feel like I have done a very good job at integrating Black History month this year because we are currently studying our Holocaust unit, and I didn't want to interrupt it. Next year I will be more intentional. #gcisdchat
A5: You have to believe in your mission. If you are a teacher, administrator, district leader, mom, doctor, WHATEVER. If you don’t whole-heartedly believe, care, and know your mission... learning on the receiving end will always be limited. #gcisdchat
A6: Great literature is always my go-to. Authors that tell the stories that need to be told can share experiences and perspectives that I cannot! #gcisdchat
A6: For my sped kids working on comprehension, we do a lot of articles with famous African Americans figures. Just the other day one of my students said we already read about him when the article was about Martin Luther King, Jr. #gcisdchat
A6 I don't feel like I have done a very good job at integrating Black History month this year because we are currently studying our Holocaust unit, and I didn't want to interrupt it. Next year I will be more intentional. Oops, put the wrong number. #gcisdchat
A6 Weave in powerful leaders and have conversations about what they stood for, what types of paths they paved, and the difference they made. #gcisdchat
I am about to read Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson as my class read aloud in fifth grade. It is an amazing book. Students are also going to study multicultural picture books and create a speech sharing common themes #gcisdchat
A6: @HeritageMSAVID is going to make this a SCHOOLWIDE celebration by having student created QR codes around the school and weekly announcements! #gcisdchat
A7: I focus on the students and also focus on things that I am doing well and choose not to dwell on those things that I’m not doing so well. #gcisdchat
Q7 You get a Top 100 workplace sticker from Gema. Put it in your classroom. Then remind yourself we work in the best district around. And take care of your mental health each day. #GCISDchat
A7: 1) take care of yourself 2) celebrate the progress made this year with a kid and remember the goal you want the kiddo to be at by the EOY then make it happen! #GCISDChat
A7: Set aside time for personal maintenance (exercise, time with friends/family, sleep, etc.), and be sure to interact with students. Don't fall into an uninspired routine #gcisdchat
A7 Fake it till you make it? Seriously though I have morning duty greeting the students as they walk in. I consider it my job to be the first positive person they see to set up their day. For myself, I still have a lot to learn. #gcisdchat
A7: Visiting campuses, talking to our principals/campus leaders about their ideas & visions, visiting with teachers & students, watching our students excel in their respective activities & elements - this fills my bucket. #gcisdchat
A7: I try to remember that every student deserves the time and effort I’d want my own children to receive. It’s not easy ... especially in February. But they deserve our best. #GCISDChat
Not only does this start Ss day off great... it inspires other Ts and spreads the positive vibes! 1 person...1 smile...1 high five can have a huge ripple effect #gcisdchat

A7: that’s another tough one. Taking deep breaths and running your list of “whys” in your head can help! Plus it never helps when you hear the little sparks of joy from colleagues when they know you are struggling! (Thanks @donnamorgan_SLE !) #gcisdchat
A8: Jed and Ted at Recess, A book inspired by two of my students last year. They are inseparable. It would be a humorous picture book of some of the crazy things they’ve done #gcisdchat
