Michael Matera, author of #XPLAP, 6th Grade teacher, and all around lover of playful learning.
Favorite game, I can't answer that, but I can say my most recently played... TRIANS the card game.
#xplap A1 YES!!! the easiest way to track, explore, create and learn! Just had my 1st graders making Thanksgiving pixel art on a spreadsheet THEY LOVED IT
a1) use them to make graphs and find lines of best fit. Great for data accumulation and investigations. Also @mrmatera spreadsheet is great for tracking my game #xplap
A1: I use spreadsheets everyday! They are so flexible and friendly to people like me who need to organize everything. Scripting them allows you to use them to do so many things you wouldn't think of. #XPLAP#ci149
Q2: Yes. Great way to efficiently sort and categorize info and data. Plus, as a science major, it'll do lots of the work for you. Saves you time on Math and conversions. #XPLAP
A1: Just started combining my Google Forms with the Sheets add-on FormMule for auto-reply emails. Trying to set up instant feedback with passcodes to the next assignment for the Ss. #XPLAP
Joining a little late! Stefanie from Illinois. 8th ELA and team lead. Too many to have fav game, but just played Codenames w board game club today. #XPLAP
A1: I've barely been getting into spreadsheets. I've used them when I was younger on excel but the spreadsheets in #ci149 are so much nicer and much more efficient! #XPLAP
A2: Yes. Great way to efficiently sort and categorize info and data. Plus, as a science major, it'll do lots of the work for you. Saves you time on Math and conversions. #XPLAP
Q1: I use spreadsheets at my current job, working with many parents and students makes for keeping track of everything hard. Having spreddsheets makes everything so much easier
#xplap
A1: I use spreadsheets all the time for personal homework, student progress, extracurricular activities, and more. You can use them in so many ways #XPLAP
A1: full gamification this year + would be lost wo spreadsheets to track points and act as leaderboards. So glad @mrmatera made his available for purchase! #XPLAP

A2: Using @alicekeeler's spreadsheet this time! woot. So XP and spending is kind of the first thing that comes to mind. BUT how about teams (shipmates) and group totals? #XPLAP
A2: I've grown up loving sports. Been trying to come up with ways to give Ss info about their own "stats." Like, beyond leaderboard XP and Gold. Still in the nascent stages #xplap
A2: Using @alicekeeler's spreadsheet this time! woot. So XP and spending is kind of the first thing that comes to mind. BUT how about teams (shipmates) and group totals? #XPLAP
A2: Well, if its for some form of assessment, data collected can tell you much on how a Ss is progressing: where they may be good in, or areas that may need clarification or time. Not to mention how the whole class is holding up #xplap
I tracked this for a poker league one season in order to design a new game structure for the league. Used those stats to simulate the results to see how reasonable it would be #XPLAP#ci149
A2: One of the the data's that I collect all the time is making sure students have the proper instruments assigned and checked out to them #xplap#ci149
A1: I totally love spreadsheets! I use them to get organized with budgeting and also keep track of simple things I own. I recently made one of all the things I wanted to buy and do at Disneyland #ci149#XPLAP
A2: You could also use data from G forms tied directly to a spreadsheet to show growth. Have students analyze their OWN growth over the corse to the school year or for Parent night! #xplap
Thanks for picking up my sheet and seeing its value… Worked hard to bring a unique product with helping teachers design their own #gamification with this flexible tool. #XPLAP@jellison23
A3 A long time ago I sat down to build a spreadsheet to track a game and let kids level up, but then after a few hours I found @mrmatera 's spreadsheet, so I bought it AND GOT MY LIFE BACK #nojoke
My Ss gain gold by completing quests and side quests. they also get paid for showing up on time and working hard each week. pay increases with level. Gold can buy items like "pick a song for worktime playlist" #XPLAP
Can't find Q2, but this seems appropriate. Want to streamline Boss Battles. Subtract HP damage in Spreadsheet and then have it show Battle Damage on separate projected sheet. A Bit over my ability now though... #xplap
Experience, thats totally something you can keep track of. Not just from a point-system, but also along the idea of how a character/Ss progresses or learns #xplap
It was EXACTLY what I wanted and no one had anything like it! I'm learning more and more how to utilize it to its fullest potential. Kids today hit Astronaut level -- a long sought goal involving actually 3D printed badges that my students designed! #xplap
They always seemed overwhelming to me until I started messing with them more and looking up what I can and can't do. Plus I worked in an office that forced me to learn #ci149#XPLAP
Q3: In many MMO's, Players have to collect resources to build more powerful items and armor. Spreadsheets can help you organize all your materials to show you what you already have, and what else you must go find. #xplap
A3: Spreadsheets can hold a multitude of tabs, rows, columns that can be calculated and equations made to make it simpler to organize than a typical document. #XPLAP#ci149
A3: Sheets allow the students a chance to glimpse at their points/badges/ items at a glance rather than continuously asking the teacher for updates. #XPLAP
A3: A spreadsheet can help you keep track of the things that you earn/collect that lead to a new item. Having it auto-fill to show what is ready to collect on would be nice! #XPLAP#ci149
A3: Spreadsheets can keep track of what points are earned and what those points come from. It can also show at what time they were earned. #ci149#XPLAP
A3: i think if it were coded correctly, it could add points together using a formula that automatically does it. what is that formula though? idk lol #ci149#XPLAP
A3: Spreadsheets can be fancy scoreboard. Use the cells to input points, but also cells to establish what the points were for, who they're for, and makes the score known to all players #xplap
A3: Besides the leaderboard spreadsheet, I'm using IF and AND statements and some add-ons to automatically send Ss their next task based on the results of their previous assignment. #XPLAP
Hi I'm Priscilla in NJ. Not enough time anymore to play things like Mario Kart, but when I have a minute I like Emoji Blitz & Set Daily Puzzle on my phone.
There's more to tracking points in a game than just how many points you earned. How many points does each task award? How many points will you need to level up? Which task(s) can get you there? #XPLAP#ci149
A3: Spreadsheets can help keep track points of a game by arranging the different portions of the game., like round 1,2,3,4 and so on. The use of leveling up and raising points. #xplap#ci149

A3: so since my responses are just a big love fest for @mrmatera I might as well continue. His sheets connect so that as you update your master, the Ss leaderboards also update w only info they need #XPLAP
I introduced one this year where the Ss can buy items from each other, completely handled by a google form and sheet. updates without me looking at it at all! #XPLAP
A3 always had a dream of creating a comparative leaderboard. Only see the 5 ahead and 5 behind in standings. Never figured it out. My belt rank, seems,to,be working better anyways 😁 #xplap
I did build in a bonus -- when one student reaches Astronaut level (high level in my game) their entire homeroom gets an extra 500 XP -- we win together #XPLAP
A3: well spreadsheet could sum up the point for you and it quick so you dont have to get a fancy calculator which could be expensive and confusing to work with #ci149#xplap
A4 created a digital Bingo of summer pics with facukty where they submitted pics that met the board and they points for each picture. Forms & Sheets #xplap
A1: I LOVE using sheets! I use them for my to-do list, for my class assignments, for everything and anything I can use them for! I love embedding links too! #XPLAP#ci149
A3ish I really think the point with using #GoogleSheets is the fact that you can integrate with @GoogleForEdu and the spreadsheet becomes the tool not the means... #XPLAP
Tech doesn't excite me, it frightens me. I love our class because you intordoced us to so many things. https://t.co/vViMDOe8Bv was one huge resource I never thought to click on before. #XPLAP#CI149

I give my intro to business kids a taste of them with a step by step balance sheet activity, they actually love seeing the math cascade when you change a number
@pintobeanz11 inspired me to beg/demand the district set the @ part of our email to autofill -- now i've got 6 year olds logging into their chromebooks and hopping on spreadsheets #xplap

A4: Made this assignment recently. The code to the next assignment only shows up when all of the proper terms are in. Conditional formatting to turn cells green when correct too! #XPLAP
I love telling my littles that they can do more than any other firsties in the district because everyone else thinks they are too young! #xplap#theycandoit
Learning doesnt end, but it is the guidance. Just when I feel that I learned one new thing, there are 1,000's of other ways to do something similar. #XPLAP#CI149

Being in a chat w/ @alicekeeler is like being in one of those money wind tunnels, but better, because I can come back later and grab everything! #XPLAP
You know, I really dig your lessons on how you learn from failure than from success. Very true to life. Adding my Bitmoji took a while, but now I feel accomplished! #xplap

A1 - I have used spreadsheets for work. I have made med sheets, mileage, and timesheets. I love making them because it is easier to keep track of everything. #ci149#XPLAP
A3: It can help keep track of points in a game by writing how many earned in each level and add up later, or constantly update any successes in the game #xplap
Q7: Choice is powerful and fun. Check out this Minecraft spreadsheet with progress bar. How will you use spreadsheets to give choices? https://t.co/juMcCLjB4C#XPLAP#CI149
A7: using spreadsheets can give students the opportunity to choose their own adventure without having to create multiple different activities #ci149#xplap
Q7: Choice is powerful and fun. Check out this Minecraft spreadsheet with progress bar. How will you use spreadsheets to give choices? https://t.co/juMcCLjB4C#XPLAP#CI149
You might make your own challenge spreadsheet by having students do different tasks, marking them as done and adding up the point totals. This could be like community service, spreadsheet basics, or digital citizenship. #ci149#XPLAP
A7: It is similar to our quest sheet, where you can choose which ones to do to apply points! Gives Ss a chance to be individual & what works for them #XPLAP#ci149
A7: Ss can be given different tasks they want to accomplish and do them as they choose as long as they reach a certain XP. Much like our quest sheet #ci149#XPLAP
Q7: Choice is powerful and fun. Check out this Minecraft spreadsheet with progress bar. How will you use spreadsheets to give choices? https://t.co/juMcCLjB4C#XPLAP#CI149
A7: Checked it out, thats cool! Ss get to choose what tasks and problems to do, and earn XP based on choices. Like our quest! I could make one like that, filled with hw problems. Do lots of easy, or fewer but harder #xplap
A7: Ss will be able to pick what they want to do/what peeks their interest. Setting different values of XP for different tasks gives them choices on what to do first. #ci149#XPLAP
A7: Choices to do what they would like to complete and hopefully they would be more motivated to do meaningful, productive work. Like we do in this class with the quest list. #ci149#XPLAP
A6: I can make my own challenge spreadsheet by making a reward system for students who are excelling in the classroom. I would like to make something that involves music. #xplap#ci149
A7: The students can choose which tasks to focus on, if this was in an elementary school, there could be different subject areas that students can choose from and complete tasks that fit into those categories. Choose which one sounds interesting. #ci149#XPLAP
A6: Give a number of problems to work on. Give them a total value that have to come to, then let them pick what difficulty they want to work at. #xplap
#xplap#ci149 A7: everything could be listed on a spreadsheet and then given to students. Students would then chose what tasks/assignments they would like to do
A7: I love that MineCraft spreadsheet! I would offer lots of choices so students can check off assignments they WANT to do and track their own progress #ci149#XPLAP
Good point. Allowing them to chose off a Spreadsheet could allow for different subjects to be focused on by them. You might have a number of different things Ss will work on #xplap
A3: #ci149#XPLAP
Spreadsheets make it easier because you can enter a formula that will simply add everything up for you. I love using a formula, so I don't have to do everything by hand.
Q8: =if(expression, if true, if false) is really helpful when making spreadsheets for games. Try typing Chupacabra into column A. #XPLAP#ci149https://t.co/zsrrhSorsm
A7: I will use spreadsheets by giving students different tasks that not only require activities that are engaging and fun. This can take them to different sites, programs and videos to accomplish their goal. #xplap#ci149
It is so true… Spreadsheets are both fun and powerful… Really worth learning some of the basics… Love to hear your enthusiasm… Hope to have you back on #XPLAP soon!
A6: Similar to #ci149 you can make a badge game that includes benefits in class. The higher your badge the more extra help, resources, or some other benefit for grades. #XPLAP
A4: I gave up trying to put a picture...my laptop isn't letting me. It would paste just fine, as soon as I click out of the square it disappears-_- #xplap
That could definitely be fun. They can earn badges based on new things they learn. Such as basics from what is a staff to idk playing a Bb scale. It's totally doable and encourages Ss to wanna learn more and practice! #ci149#XPLAP
Q8: =if(expression, if true, if false) is really helpful when making spreadsheets for games. Try typing Chupacabra into column A. #XPLAP#ci149https://t.co/zsrrhSorsm

A7: The mine craft spreadsheet is awesome! I can provide choices by allowing students to choose what quests or exercises they want to do. Much like the quest list. #XPLAP#ci149
A9: Conditional formatting can be used to give feedback to your students pretty instantly. This can be really valuable in terms of guiding where students are going. #ci149#XPLAP
